A warm welcome to our new members of the Faculty!
It is my pleasure to invite you to the Faculty of Computer Science and Information Technology (FoCuS-IT). The acronym FoCuS-IT refers to our target and Focus on Individual Transformation. We are thus committed towards the development of holistic individuals who are not only equipped with sound knowledge and skills but also having the drive and character to meet emerging global challenges. The faculty has thus adopted a four year programme of study in-line with the ACM/IEEE Computing Curricula and in compliance with the Code of Practice of the Malaysian Qualification Framework. The balanced curricular has received the Multimedia Super Corridor (MSC) status and is value-added by Industry-led professional training programme. It is thus not surprising that our students are well sought-after by employees. Our infrastructure and facilities have been constantly upgraded and well-equipped with advanced computing and network facilities on par with leading world class institutions. This combined with our dynamic and well-qualified academics together with a conducive teaching-learning environment, makes the faculty an ideal place to shape up your enterprising and illustrious career.

UNIMAS
UNIMAS
Introduction
The university was officially incorporated on 24th December 1992. With about 30 academic staff, the University opened its doors to the first batch of 118 students on 8th August 1993. The students were registered in the two pioneering faculties, the Faculty of Social Science and the Faculty of Resource Science and Technology. Two academic support centres were also established: the Centre for Applied Learning and Multimedia, and the Centre for Academic Information Services. The following year (1994) saw four more faculties opening their doors for degree courses: the Faculty of Cognitive Sciences and Human Development, the Faculty of Applied and Creative Arts, the Faculty of Engineering, and the Faculty of Information Technology.
The period between January 1995 and the end of December 1996 saw further consolidation in the academic and research structure of the university. Two more faculties began taking in their pioneer batches of students; the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences (1995) and the Faculty of Economics and Business (1996). These brought the total numbers of faculties to eight, as originally planned. The Centre for Language & Communication Studies began to offer the TESL programme, in addition to language generic courses. The Institute of Health and Community Medicine, and the Institute of Software Technology were added to the list of research institutes.

The historic year of 1997 witnessed the pioneering batch of graduates receiving their degrees at the inaugural convocation of the University. The year also saw the establishment of the Institute of East Asian Studies. The year 2000 witnessed the change in the Vice-Chancellor seat, Professor Dato’ Zawawi Ismail, the first Vice-Chancellor succeeded by Professor Datuk Yusuf Hadi as the second Vice-Chancellor of UNIMAS. Prof Datuk Dr Abdul Rashid Abdullah was appointed as the 3rd Vice-Chancellor on 1st February 2005 and from the year 2008 until present, the 4th Vice-Chancellor of UNIMAS is Professor Datuk Dr Khairuddin Ab Hamid.
As of January 2012 the total student population of UNIMAS is 11,160 and the total number of staff is 2,143.

FoCuS-IT: “Focus on Individual Transformation”
Background Computer Science is devoted to the applications of modern technologies that are based on computers and telecommunications. The main focus of computer science is the benefits of this technology to human life in the various fields such as industry, education, management, sciences, arts and business. FoCuS-IT has been chosen as the acronym for the Faculty of Computer Science and IT, as it highlights our emphasis and focus in bringing out human excellence through continuous efforts in blossoming and transforming individuals. It is thus our aspiration that every individual who comes into our orbit will evolve and discover their true potential through the blended assimilation of innovative humanistic technologies. The three corporate colors (blue, red, yellow) of UNIMAS and the Faculty colour, silver are used in producing this unique design, depicting us as the producer of individuals who will play a lead role in shaping our future world.IT is in gold indicating a transformation. The faculty was established in November 1993 and is situated at the UNIMAS campus in Kota Samarahan. During its early years, this faculty was known as the Faculty of Information Technology. The faculty was established to fulfill Malaysia needs for more education and research centers in producing scholars in the field “Computer Science” and “Information Technology”. It was necessary for the existence of a center of higher education that is able to develop this discipline parallel with the local industry. This is to achieve the country’s desire to be the hub for education and information technology trainings as well as to increase industrial export in information technology.

In 2003, the faculty name was changed to the Faculty of Computer Science and Information Technology. The change was done due to the rapid development in computers technologies and the importance of science and technology education. The title of its bachelor degree was changed from Bachelor of Information Technology to Bachelor of Computer Science. Later that year, the faculty was awarded the Multimedia Super Corridor (MSC) status on the 17th November 2003. This award showed that the faculty has been able to provide excellent education and training, not just to the students as well as to the general public through its innovative and up-to-date programmes.

Infosys
Infosys ‘Campus Connect’ Programme is an initiative by the Ministry of Higher Education Malaysia (MOHE) in collaboration with Multimedia Development Corporation (MdeC) and Infosys Technologies Limited, India, as a strategic partner, to develop and roll-out programmes for enhancing the quality and quantity of IT talent pool in Malaysian Institutions of Higher Learning (IHL). The core programme for Campus Connect is the Foundation Programme (FP). It is a training programme designed by the Education and Research department of Infosys for entry-level students who, on completion of their undergraduate studies, will be better prepared to work on real life customer projects.

The training included modules such as Programming Fundamentals, Analysis of Algorithm, Advanced Java Programming and others, together with a week of soft skills training. For further details about this program, please send your enquiry to Mr. Norfadzlan bin Yusup (FCSIT, UNIMAS) who has been appointed as a single point of contact (for UNIMAS zone). This year, a total of 164 High Learning Institutes (HLI) participants from all over Malaysia were selected to go through the programme, including five students from our faculty. They are Mah Yuen Tong, Mohammad Yuhalis Bin Mohd Khalid, Corbin Anak Atek, Nur Aimi Binti Abdullah Sani and Ng Boon Ding.
3P Program 3P known as 'Program Pentauliahan Profesional' is an industry-based certification initiative by the Ministry of Higher Education (MoHE) and Prestariang Systems Sdn Bhd (PSSB)to fulfill current industry needs. Prestariang Systems SdnBhd (PSSB) is responsible to provide ICT training and certification together with the supply of licences for the software used in trainings and certification programmes. Targeted for IT & IT-related final year students, 3P will complement the degree/diploma awarded by the Universities & Polytecnics/Community Colleges.

For 2012 Imagine Cup which was held in Australia, our faculty submitted one project called “Neo’s Life Tree”, and has been recognized as a World Semi Final Top 100 Teams. This project was supervised by Dr. Cheah Wai Shiang supervision. The faculty offers five undergraduate programmes: •Computational Science •Information Systems •Multimedia Computing •Network Computing •Software Engineering Further information on each of these programmes are described under Section Department, separately. UNIMAS has two semesters in a year and each semester will have a duration of 17 weeks which consists of 14 weeks of lecture, one week of revision and two weeks of examination.
Academic Term
The university also offers a short semester specifically for students to undergo industrial training, teaching training and practicum for a duration of 8 weeks.
Duration of Study For a Bachelor degree programmes, the duration of study is from 4 to 8 calendar years. However in certain cases, the minimum duration of study is 6 semesters.

Credit Requirements Students enrol for the 2012/2013 session will undergo a four-year program with the following credit requirements:
Prerequisite Course A prerequisite course is a course that must be completed, which a specified minimum grade must be achieved before undertaking another specified course. Prerequisites are listed in the course descriptions in the guidebook. It is very important for a student to pass the prerequisites because if a student fails to obtain at least the minimum grade, this may impede the progression of their degree programme.
Plagiarism and Collusion Plagiarism is the representation of work which has been copied in whole or in part from another person’s work, or from any other source such as the internet, published books or periodicals without due acknowledgement given in the text. Collusion is the presentation of work that is the result in whole or in part of unauthorized collaboration with another person or persons.

Assessment Information The aim of assessment is to guide students' learning to the stated learning outcomes of the courses. This is done by ensuring that expected learning takes place within the courses. Course level learning outcomes describe the level of learning expected in the course, and are assessed by strategies appropriate to that level of learning and the environment provided by the course. Thus, programme outcomes will be achieved by progressively meeting appropriate levels of knowledge, skills and understanding during the years of study. Lecturer of the course will determine the assessment methods to be used. Examples of assessment methods are assignment or project report, examination tests, practical tests, all of which may require varying combinations of individual and group contribution. Final grades given to the student at the end of the course will be determined by the Faculty Examination Board Committee and will be endorsed by Senate of UNIMAS. Credit Transfer Student is allowed to apply for credit transfer for certain courses. For more information on credit transfer, please refer to the Peraturan Akademik Pengajian Ijazah Sarjana Muda.
Academic Support System (ASSIST) ASSIST supports online teaching and learning initiative in UNIMAS. It has several systems to support the teaching-learning practices such as Morpheus and Learnfinity. These systems provide many facilities for online interaction between lecturer and student, for example, forum, wiki, blog and others. Besides that, student is able to download lecture notes and find extra information about the course that he registers. A new student is required to register their accounts first before using the systems. For more information, please refer to the Centre for Applied Learning and Multimedia (CALM) or view their website www.calm.unimas.my.

Course Enrolment Information It is the responsibility of the student to make sure he enrolls in the correct courses each semester. Registration is done online via Anjung UNIMAS. Registering or withdrawing from a course must be done prior to certain dates to prevent academic and financial penalties. It is also the responsibility of the student to know all of the registration deadlines. Certain courses require student to enroll tutorial or laboratory. The student is advised to select a tutorial or laboratory that best suits his timetable. Should there be clashes, student must consult course lecturer to resolve the matter.

Faculty Core Courses
These courses cover knowledge and skills towards specification in certain field or area that are demanded for certain programmes. Each programme not only focuses on its theory and specific practice, but also emphasizes technology and management aspects. Faculty core courses are divided into two categories, which are:

TMC1013 System Analysis and Design
This course provides students with knowledge and experience of conducting systems analysis and design of a system, and its placement within the software development lifecycle. The course emphasizes process, data and event modeling for representing key aspects of information systems. In particular, emphasis will be placed on the mechanisms required for modeling during the acquisition of requirements and the formulation of information system solutions. The course also provides different roles of stakeholders involved in an Information Systems (IS) development projects, and the responsibilities associated with these roles. The course instructs students with an awareness of the software development lifecycle, in particular requirements analysis and design phases. Prerequisite: None
TMC1213 Computer Architecture The course introduces 3 main themes: • internal structure of the digital computer • the classic Von Neumann architecture • relationship between high-level language constructs and their implementation on the computer – investigated through the use of an Assembly Language and C. Prerequisite: None
TMC1233 Operating System This course explores the fundamental concepts which are necessary for a computer operating system. The emphasis of the course is placed on the both hardware and software operation that are managed by computer operating system. Prerequisite: None

Common Core Courses
TMC1214 Communication and Computer Network
The course is an introductory course on Networks and Computer Communications. It takes a bottom-up overview of the OSI layered model. It will introduce Networking and Communications issue in relation to the 7 layers model throughout the course. It provides an introduction, appreciation and understanding to LAN and WAN design, implementation and application within organisations. Emergent network issues and services of telecoms will be covered from a technical viewpoint. Prerequisite: None
TMC1414 Introduction to Programming This course provides a general introduction to programming in C. It is designed to give students the ability to write simple computer programs in C and to be able to understand such programs written by others. The course covers problem solving skills, writing algorithms, basic C syntax, control structures (loops, if statements, switches), functions and input/output operations. The course forms part of a core courses for the undergraduate program within the faculty, and provide programming foundation for other courses. Prerequisite: None
TMC1434 Data Structures and Algorithms This course will focus on data structures and associated algorithms that are fundamental to the study of computer science. We will also discuss analysis of algorithms in terms of algorithmic efficiency. The innovative feature of this course is the use of the C++ language. C++ is widely used in the industry worldwide, and is rapidly becoming the language of choice for software development professionals. It is a very desirable asset when acquiring employment. TMC1814 Discrete Mathematics This course will prepare the student with mathematical foundations for other Computer Science and Information Technology course which including data structures, algorithms, database theory, computer security and operating system. Prerequisite: None
TMC2034 Database Concept and Design This module explores the fundamental concepts necessary for the design, use and implementation of database and document management systems. A particular emphasis is placed on the relational database model. Prerequisite: TMC1014 System Analysis and Design

TMC1874 Mathematics for Computing
This course provides an introduction to Statistics and Linear Algebra, fundamental to the development of statistical models, computation framework for posing and solving problems especially in computer science related fields. Inference, with coverage of data collection and analysis is emphasized to evaluate the reported results of statistical studies and to make informed decisions. Although formulas and formal procedures are discussed, it stresses thinking over the blind use of mechanical procedures, the assessment of credibility and value of the inferences made from data. Using a matrix theory and vector space approach, this course also provides an understanding of the major concepts that underlie linear algebra and matrix analysis. Later chapters introduce a key topic such as eigenvector and provide illustrative examples. Prerequisite : None
TMC2434 Software Engineering and Application Development This course consists of a brief introduction to the fundamental principles in Software engineering as well as detail coverage of processes and methodologies involved in Software Development. The subject will cover topics on software requirement, design, development, verification and validation. Students are required to implement the knowledge gain in lectures by conducting a small software development project. Reports on processes and methodologies used for the software development project needs to be produce accordingly to what have been lectured. Prerequisite: TMC1414 Introduction to Programming

Common Core Courses TMC3034 Productisation and Technopreneurship This course will provide a foundation to prepare students to become technopreneurs, who will start-up and run technology-based SMEs. The course comprises two parts: firstly, focusing on product development (be it a new product or innovation of existing products) and secondly, on commerciali-sing the product (the nature, process and running of creating a new venture). Successful technopreneurs and venture professionals from industry will be invited to share their experiences. Students will be required to form teams and develop business plans for technology-based ventures that they are interested in starting. Business plans will be scrutinised by practicing venture capitalisation and successful technopreneurs. This course also provides a study of the theory and nature of electronic commerce, particularly those based on Internet technologies. Students will be exposed to introduction to electronic principles commerce, the internet and the web infrastructure for e-commerce, web-base tools for e-commerce and e-commerce software, e-commerce application, security, electronic payment system, and current trends in use of e-commerce. Prerequisite: None
TMP2634 Multimedia Programming This course can be divided into two parts. The first part aims at introducing the students to the Java programming language, and the second part focuses more on designing and developing Java-based multimedia applications. Common Core Courses TMP2654 Web Based System Development This course will provide students an understanding of the web-based system development process, and how it can be applied in different types of information systems. It explores one of many web development frameworks and shows how that framework can help to build applications and solve common business problems. It also introduces fundamental PHP progrmming, MySQL and database concepts, and how to access data from MySQL using PHP. Prerequisite: None

Introduction Department of Computing and Software Engineering (CSE) is one of the four research-based departments in the faculty of Computer Science and Information Technology (FCSIT), UNIMAS. The CSE department is well-known in its three research priority areas such as Image Processing, Intelligent Systems, and Formal Methods. It offers a fruitful and stimulating research environment, advancing fundamental discoveries in various areas including multimedia technologies, image processing, geographic information system, intelligent systems, formal methods, object technologies and software engineering. The CSE department provides a home for the academic staffs as well as students in which their professional development can be enhanced through appropriate programme organization, and professional and collegial mentoring. For this, staffs in the CSE department actively participating in both national and international levels research projects, consultations, and industrial collaborations in their area of expertise. The CSE department offered two undergraduate programmes which are Software Engineering (SE) programme and Multimedia Computing (MC) programme.

TME2073 Intelligent Systems The course will provide students with the knowledge in Artificial Intelligence concentrating on intelligent systems. The course would include the me-thodologies in developing knowledge representation as well as the various searching techniques that is employed in the development of intelligent systems. The course would also delve into some central areas of artificial intelligence such as problem solving and the application of AI in real world applications such as neural network, expert systems, natural language processing, genetic algorithm, fuzzy logic and intelligent tutoring system. Throughout the course, the student will frequently be required to work with examples.
Prerequisite(s): TMC1434 Data Structures and Algorithms TME2113 Logic Programming The course is divided into two components, which is the theory and practical component. The theory component of the course covers on the environment and development of logic programming. The practical components emphasizes in developing real world applications in Artificial Intelligent using logic programming. Prerequisite(s): TME2073 Intelligent Systems TME3033 Expert Systems The course provides an overview of the structure of an expert systems as well covering on the various methodologies involve in the development an expert systems. In general the course will cover on the roles of the knowledge engineer, the various techniques involve in the knowledge acquisition process and the construction of the different types of knowledge representation and reasoning. TMP3413 Software engineering Lab
This course will provide students with the necessary skills in the development a software product in a team environment. Student will be introduced to the Team Software Process (TSP); an integrated framework that guides development teams in producing high-quality software-intensive systems. The course also consists of an introduction to the methods presented in the TSP which are; how to establish roles; how to conceive, design, and plan a project; and how to track and report on software project’s progress.
Prerequisite(s): TMC2413 Object Oriented Software Development
TMC2434 Software Engineering and Application Development
TME4013 Formal Methods This course introduces the elements of formal methods, its syntax and semantics and its supporting tools. The objectives are, to make student aware of the importance of formal methods in software specification and to enable students construct formal specification using its supporting tool. As more complex computational systems are used within critical applications, it is becoming essential that these systems are formally specified. Such specifications are used to give a precise and unambiguous description of the required system. While this is clearly important in critical systems such as life-support system, industrial process management and air/spacecraft control. In addition, as computational systems become more complex in general, formal specification can allow us to define the key characteristics of systems in a clear way and so provide the basis for verification of properties of systems.

TME4053 Software Testing The course will introduce the concept of software testing which emphasizes on software processes. The course provides the foundation knowledge needed in managing a software product. Software issues will be also discussed in order to in still students’ awareness of the current global software issues. Software testing as an important phase in software development will be discussed in detail. Students will be exposed to the some type of testing through practical studies by following the real process of testing including the preparation of all relevant documents. Prerequisite(s): TMC2434 Software Engineering and Application Development TME4093 Advanced Topics in Software Engineering The course will enable students to obtain a broad understanding on topics related to software engineering. Students will be exposed to a variety of techniques in theoretical, practical and research area in software engineering such as formal methods, web engineering, software re-engineering and others. The course aims to equip students with the knowledge and skill on how to visualise data in a variety of styles and effects. The course focuses on the basic principles of visualisation techniques and image processing. This course provides practical experience in handling and visualising imagery. This course covers theories on multimedia development process. This course will expose students to writing multimedia elements using object oriented language such as Virtual Reality Modeling Language (VRML). They have to program it from scratch. This will enable them to understand the modeling process of interactive 3D worlds. This knowledge will allow them to understand high level modeling tools in the market such as 3D Studio Max. The students will also be exposed to modeling, rendering and animating objects. Prerequisite(s): None TMT4053 Multimodal Interaction Technology This course gives an elementary introduction to concepts, methods and applications of Multimodal Interaction Technology. The course covers the fundamentals of speech processing, speech production models, frequency-domain analysis methods, and applications to speech coding, synthesis, recognition and audio processing. TMT4073 Digital Image Processing In order to process visual information in computer systems we need to know about processing digital images. This course covers the principles and fundamental concepts, theory and techniques of image processing. Academic staffs within the department are among the experts in the above mentioned areas where they share knowledge and collaborate in joined research projects both within and outside of the university. Staffs in the department have been actively participating in national and international levels research projects, consultations and industrial collaborations in their area of expertise. TMN2013 Microcomputer Interfacing This course describes in practical terms on how to program a PC to carry out time critical tasks, to sense real-world quantities such as temperature, sound, light and etc. Analysis of data acquired, display the results and performing control tasks are also part of the course. Prerequisite(s): TMC1214 Computer Architecture TMN2073 Computer Security This course aims to give students a thorough understanding of computer security. This includes high-level issues such as security policy (modelling what ought to be protected) and engineering (how we can obtain assurance that the protection provided is adequate). It also involves the protection mechanisms supported by modern processors and operating systems; cryptograph; and a wide variety of attacks ranging from network exploits through malicious code to protocol failure. Prerequisite(s): TMC1254 Communication and Computer Network TMN2093 Computer System Administration and Management This course begins with an introduction to systems administration with an emphasis on fundamental concepts and best practices. Topics include authentication and authorization, system backup, exploration of PC connectivity alternatives and the decision making process for designing cost-effective local area networking solutions for a given application. Emphasis is placed on the use of local area networking solutions in client/server architectures. TMN4013 Distributed System This course is concerned with loosely-coupled distributed systems in which computers communicate with one another over a network in order to carry out joint tasks. The main advantages to be gained from distributed systems are resource sharing across networks, tolerance of failures by replicating devices and data, and speed up in computational performance. In order to materialize these advantages, many systems, transperancy is one of the most important considerations. For user, it means that the files and other resources in a distributed system can be accessed without knowledge of their location. Introduction
The Department of Computational Science and Mathematics currently has 10 energetic academicians whose research field ranges from applied mathematics, bioinformatics, computing and operational research. The department is home to researchers and academicians who have wide interests in computer science, engineering and sciences. It is the aim of the department to enhance contacts between mathematicians, statisticians and computer scientists at the university and research scientists in industry. The department’s main mission is to conduct research in collaboration with industry on topics motivated by industrial applications, and to provide assistance to industry.
The department also offers one major in the undergraduate program, which is the computational science major. The students in the computational science program will gain an understanding of science principally through the use and analysis of mathematical models on high-performance computers. It is the department’s hope to raise the profile of the mathematical sciences in the student population.

TMS2153 Multivariable Calculus
This course serves as an extension of single variable calculus where the calculus of two or more variables are presented. The Maple is used as an enhancement tool to overcome the difficulty of visualizing the properties of these functions. Besides, we emphasis on helping the students to develop the insight into using the proper coordinate system and order of integration to simplify a given multiple integral. Students will also develop the skills and understanding in the calculus of vector-valued functions and parametric equations before go for vector calculus which is essential in many application especially in fluid mechanics, electricity and magnetism. Overall, this subject is very important as the students wish to do mathematical modelling in their final year project. Prerequisite(s): None TMS2033 Differential Equations
This course provides treatment of differential equations while introducing the computer-assisted methods that are now available with Maple software. Maple is chosen among other mathematical package because of its combination of easy access and computational power, as evidenced through symbolic, numerical, and graphical output. The student will be able to solve problems through modeling, solving and interpreting. The student will become familiar with ways to think mathematically, recognize the need for applying mathematical methods to problems, realize that mathematics is a systematic science built on relatively few basic concepts and involving powerful unifying principles, and get a grasp for the interrelation between theory, computing and experiment. TMP2813 Computational Science Laboratory This course will teach students to solve computational science problems, ranging from the natural sciences such as chemistry and biology as well as problems in the engineering and economics fields. Depending on the problems that need to be solved, mathematical and statistical packages such as MatLab and R Statistical Package will be used to assist the students. This will enable the students to understand not only the usage of mathematical tools but also the mathematical aspects of the problem in hand. Prerequisite(s): None
TMS3033 Operational Research This course is concerning with mathematical modeling and analysis to design, evaluate, or improve the operations of a real-world system. This course will introduce student with quantitative approaches to problem solving using methods of operations research. Quantitative approaches which will be introduced in this course are deterministic models, including linear, integer, network, and stochastic methods, including decision analysis, queuing systems, are applied to solve problems in constrained resource management, analysis system, and optimization system. Prerequisite(s): None TMS3133 Numerical Methods This course provides the study and application of numerical methods, which gives the transition from the mathematical model of a problem to an algorithm that we can program to obtain the solution of the problem in the form of numbers. TMS4033 Statistical Data Analysis This course will enable students to understand data and situations when regression analysis is the appropriate method to use. Emphasis is placed on a thorough understanding of the regression models, including the basic mathematical steps in fitting a linear statistical model, the use of residual analysis and other diagnostics for examining of the appropriateness of a regression model. Requisite(s): TMC1874 Mathematics for Computing TMS4053 Mathematical Modeling and Simulation The central theme of this course is the practical use of the computer packages MATLAB and Simulink for modeling and simulation. The knowledge of these packages will be developed by applying them to solve and investigate many different processes. Selected systems will be considered, including practical examples of the following types: mechanical, thermal, process, biological and biomedical (e.g. predator-prey, epidemics), traffic, economic, business and financial. The course provides an introduction to computer-based simulation and its applications to engineering, sciences and management. Information Systems Programme (IS)
Introduction Nowadays organizations are moving to higher levels of automation and are highly dependent on information provided by computer-based systems. These complex systems will become an exceedingly important strategic asset of the organization.
The Department’s research focus is to create, disseminate, and apply knowledge at the intersection of human systems and information technology. The Information Systems Department has two main groups: Knowledge Retrieval and Management (KREAM) and Human Centered Computing (HCC). KREAM group focuses on research areas that involved retrieval techniques from large-scale databases, while HCC group focuses on research areas that are concerned with understanding human beings and with the design of computational artifacts. The Information Systems programme will focus at organisations, people, processes and technical aspects in system development. This programme is suitable for students who are interested in designing and implementing effective solutions based on the organisation. Students will apply theories by involving themselves with various projects. All courses include extensive practical project work that includes the use of a wide variety of system development tools which provide the basic background for students to pursue their postgraduate studies as well. These courses not only will fulfil the current industry needs but will also have impact in the research field.

TMI2053 Information Systems in Organizations The general aim for this course is to increase awareness of how information and its delivery mechanism, the information system, affect an organization’s ability to meet its goals. Case studies and demonstration of technologies employed in organization will be used to sensitize the students awareness of IS in organizations. Prerequisite(s): TMC1014 System Analysis and Design
TMI2073 Advanced Database Management Systems This course is an exposure to advanced knowledge about database system development and also database administration and management. Students will be using several types of databases to develop and administer the database. Current tools will be used to make sure the students gain appropriate knowledge and experience is dealing with the database. This course will give the students opportunities to learn in theory and practice on advanced database concepts and also database administration. This course assumes that students have completed the prerequisite course where they have learned the concepts in data modeling, including Entity-Relationship modeling method and relational database concepts. Students would also need to have a background in Structured Query Language, and basic understanding of operating systems. Prerequisite(s): TMC2034 Database Concept and Design

TMI3053 Human Computer Interaction Human computer interaction (HCI) is a study of how people interact with computers. This course will introduce the fundamental aspects of HCI. Students will learn and put into practice approaches of design and implementation of usable human-computer interactions, taking into account the Malaysian context. Students will also evaluate interfaces, which incorporate design, administration, analysis and reporting of the usability evaluation. Prerequisite(s): None
TMI2073 Human Centered Technology In language technology, techniques and formalisms from natural language processing (NLP) are used in the development of systems with societal relevance or commercial importance. The aim of this course is to introduce students to the field of NLP, also called Computational Linguistics, or Natural Language Engineering. NLP studies the algorithms to enable the computer to interpret and produce natural languages, i.e. English, Mandarin Chinese, etc. Applications of NLP include information retrieval from the web, human computer interaction, and machine translation. Prerequisite(s): TMC1434 Data Structures and Algorithms
TMP3113 Project Management Particular emphasis is placed on the systems and procedures in the areas of planning, organising, scheduling and budgeting. The techniques learnt will be applied in a specific problem area. The human and organisation issues such as good communications, trust and teamwork are also highlighted. Project managers from industry will be invited to speak about experiences of projects they have managed. TMI4013 Data Mining Data Mining studies algorithms and computational paradigms that allow computers to find patterns and regularities in databases, perform prediction and forecasting, and generally improve their performance through interaction with data. It is currently regarded as the key element of a more general process called Knowledge Discovery that deals with extracting useful knowledge from raw data. The knowledge discovery process includes data selection, cleaning, coding, using different statistical, pattern recognition and machine learning techniques, and reporting and visualisation of the generated structures. This course will cover an introduction to the concepts, techniques, and systems of data warehousing and data mining, including the design and implementation of data warehouse and online analytical processing (OLAP) systems, and data mining concepts, methods, systems, implementations, and applications. TMI4033 Collective Intelligence With the development and acceptance of the Internet and social networks, there is an increase in the need to galvanise the efforts and capabilities of individuals. The aim of this course is to understand how collective intelligence of communities (all over the world) can be harnessed to achieve specific goals, facilitates creativity, collaboration, and sharing. In order to achieve this, we need to address issues of “collective intelligence” in terms of coordination, cognition, and cooperation from two perspectives, i.e. the human and technology perspective. From the human perspective, we need to understand cognition and cooperation and from the technology aspect, the issues of providing a platform and processes which would allow the communities to work together, and to extract and use information from the enormous amount of data on the Internet. INDUSTRIAL TRAINING
Industrial Training (TMY3912)
Industrial Training forms an integral part of a degree program at Faculty of Computer Science and Information Technology. Industrial Training program provides an essential prep-professional work experience on a specific field. At Faculty of Computer Science and Information Technology, students are required to undergo Industrial Training for 24 weeks and it carries a total of 12 credit hours out of 136 credits. This is an opportunity for the students to gain insight knowledge of their chosen carrier and prepares them to the expectation of the industries. Students from all programmes at Faculty of Computer Science and Information Technology will go for their Industrial Training during their 3rd year 2nd semester of their studies. It is imperative that all students complete the following courses before they can enroll for their Industrial Training; TMC1434 Data Structures and Algorithm TMC1014 System Analysis and Design TMC3012 Ethics and Professionalism

During Industrial Training, student’s performance will be assessed based on the following criteria;
Visiting supervisors report Company Supervisors report Students Industrial Training Final Report and Log Book All the above three components will total up to 100% of the evaluation for the Industrial Training. Although students are attached to companies, they are still bound by all UNIMAS academic rules and regulations. COMPUTER LABORATORIES
Persons allowed to use the laboratories in the faculty are:
• Current faculty students.
• Students from other faculties who are taking faculty courses.
• Students from other faculties who have obtained permission from the
Assistant Registrar or Information Systems Officer of the faculty.
Laboratory Rules
Students must read, understand and obey all of the rules and regulations
before using laboratory facilities or services of the Faculty of Computer
Science and Information Technology, UNIMAS.
1. Student must display his student card while in the laboratory.
2. Student must wear proper attire according to the university’s dress
code. Student caught wearing short pant, sleeveless shirt or blouse,
miniskirt or torn jeans will not be allowed to enter the laboratory.

3. Student is allowed to bring in bags, but, must be placed on the rack
provided in the laboratory.
4. Use of mobile phone is prohibited in the laboratory at all times. Food
and drinks are also prohibited in the laboratory.
5. Faulty computer equipment must be reported to the staff in charge
immediately, prior or after usage.
6. Student is responsible to replace any damaged or lost equipment if
found damaging or losing it on purpose.
7. Student is prohibited to change computer settings (i.e., wallpaper,
folder, system file, mouse pointer, and desktop settings including
operating system).
8. Student is not allowed to remove or relocate any computer equipment
from its location without obtaining permission from the Technical Unit.
9. Student must switch off the computer after each use to avoid energy
waste and equipment damage.
Using other computer equipment in the laboratory
1. Student must obtain permission from technical staff in charge of the
laboratory for each computer equipment (i.e, mouse, laptop, etc.) that
is needed to be brought into the laboratory.
2. Student must register his laptop at the Technical Unit before he can use
it in the laboratory.
3. Only laptops that are certified by the Technical Unit allowed in the
laboratory.

Laboratory user account access
1. Account/password that is given to a user must be kept secret. Student
is not allowed to give the password to other users. Each student is
responsible to his own account.
2. Student is prohibited from using the computer to blackmail, send or
view pornographic material, distributing advertisement or computer
virus, using other user’ s identity and other activities which do not
involve teaching and learning.
Computer files and directories
1. Student is prohibited from bringing personal software into the
laboratory. Any student found doing this will be:
i. suspended from using any computer facility for at least a month
and
ii. the software will be confiscated.
2. File that has been stored in the computer in the laboratory by any
student must be deleted after laboratory work has been completed.
3. Each student is allocated 25MB storage space in the server to store
work. Action will be taken if there is any misuse of this facility.
4. Student must ensure computer or personal storage devices used are
free from any computer virus. Student is urged to backup important
documents or files to avoid virus attacks.

Disciplinary actions
For any misuse of computer laboratory and its equipment, disciplinary
actions will be taken according to the level of the misconduct. Actions may
include:
1. A minimum of one month account suspension starting from the date of
notice issued by the Assistant Registrar or the Information Systems
Officer of the faculty.
2. Student caught misusing computer facilities will be given disciplinary
actions depending on the level of offence. Any disciplinary actions taken
will be recorded and kept on the student’s personal file. If student
receives a disciplinary notice from the faculty for the 3rd time during his
duration of study, similar notice will be sent to the student’s guardian or
parents.

EXAMINATION RULES 1. It is compulsory for student to display his student identification card in
the examination hall.
2. Student is forbidden to bring the following items into the examination
hall: • Handphone • Pencil case • Notes or books • Bag
If a student is caught bringing any of the items above into the hall, the
invigilator has the right to confiscate the items from the student.
3. Student is only allowed to bring the following items into the examination
hall:
• Pencils and Pens • Eraser and Liquid Paper • Ruler
4. Attendance is compulsory and will be recorded.
5. Student is forbidden to leave the examination hall during the first and
last 30 minutes of the examination.
6. Student who has to go to the toilet will be accompanied by an invigilator.
7. If a student is caught cheating during examination, invigilator will collect
evidence and the faculty reports the matter to the Disciplinary
Committee of UNIMAS.
8. Student must submit examination paper and answer sheets to the
invigilator at the end of examination; any appeal hereafter will not be
entertained if failed to do so.

Research at the Institute of Social Informatics and
Technological Innovations – Centre of Excellence for
Rural Informatics (ISITI-CoERI) Director: Assoc. Prof. Dr. Alvin Yeo Wee
The Institute of Social Informatics and Technological Innovations - Centre of Excellence for Rural Informatics (ISITI-CoERI) was established in 2010 as part of UNIMAS’ strategy to build upon its strength in Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs), particularly rural ICTs which encompasses the eBario Project. In 1999 UNIMAS launched eBario project in remote community of Bario, Sarawak. By applying a people-centered/ participatory approach, the project aimed to empower and train the Bario community through the application of ICTs in improving their livelihood. After the successful pilot of eBario, the UNIMAS has developed expertise in many focus areas, not only in Rural Informatics, but also Green Technologies, Rural Tourism, Education, ICT Development (ICTD) and ICT for Development (ICT4D). (There is an important distinction between ICTD and ICT4D); ICTD encompasses the development of ICTs accommodating the cultural context and the people using them, and ICT4D involves the application of technologies for social and economic development.

Given the success of eBario, the Ministry of Science Technology and Innovation (MOSTI) provided funding to research and replicate another four telecentres at Ba’Kelalan and Long Lamai in Sarawak, and Kpg Buayan and Pulau Larapan in Sabah. These locations involves different indigenous communities; Kelabits in Bario, Lun Bawang in Ba’Kelalan, Penans in Long Lamai, Dusun in Kpg Buayan, and Bajaus in Pulau Larapan. In each of the replications, the ISITI-CoERI employed the approach that entails a means and me-thodology to effectively engage with the rural indigenous population not only from a research perspective, but from a practical standpoint, where ICTs is leveraged and employed to help the communities realise wider social economic and development goals. For example, in Bario, ICTs have been instrumental in helping the tourism industry in particular the lodge owners who employ ICTs to promote and communicate with their clients. This bottom-up approach involving the community at the all stages of the deployment and application of ICTs is a key success factor in empowering the community. ISITI-CoERI has received both international and local recognitions such as Gold Medal from CAPAM in 2006, eAsia Award 2004, IT Premier Award 2003 (presented by Prime Minister of Malaysia) and Industry Innovators Award for Systems Development & Applications by SSPI Washington DC in 2002. Further to the recognition, the institute also obtained funding under Demonstrator’s Application Grant Scheme (DAGS) to replicate the eBario Model to four other sites in Malaysia (as detailed above). In addition, ISITI-CoERI is currently working on diverse and innovative projects i.e. PANGAEA for bridging digital and cultural gaps among children, projects for green technology and alternative energy sources, impact studies to evaluate the service providers’ effectiveness and the efficacy of the technologies deployed, long range WiFi Internet, research into the use of technologies in preserving indigenous languages, and research project on Technology enhanced solutions for remote rural communities in Malaysia to facilitate development of learning and preservation of Local Knowledge and to create health awareness and practices for healthy living (Asia-Pacific Telecommunity J3 funding). Another project funded by the Economic Planning Unit, Prime Minister’s Department, is the feasibility study of telecentre as means to bridge the digital divide in Malaysia, specifically for the Orang Asli in West Malaysia. Under this project, ISITI-CoERI conducted preliminary assessment of actual ICT needs and uses in the communities to be served by these facilities. “The ISITI-CoERI’s research fellows come from the different faculties in UNIMAS and work together in ISITI-CoERI for the betterment of rural communities in Malaysia.”

PERTEKMA
Persatuan Teknologi Maklumat
Founding of PERTEKMA PERTEKMA is the abbreviation for Persatuan Teknologi Maklumat. The association was established and registered under the Centre of Students Development UNIMAS on the 1st November 1997. Students of the faculty are automatically members of PERTEKMA, which is also under the management of the faculty. The foundation of PERTEKMA is mainly to build an intermediate platform for proactive and effective interaction and communication between the faculty and its students. The objectives of PERTEKMA are: • To serve as an official channel for the faculty and the students to
distribute current academic or non-academic information. • To be of assistance to students who face academic or personal
problems and also to be a centre for the students to raise disagreements, enquiries or opinions on any issues on the current system specifically those closely affect students’ rights.
• To serve as a secretariat for any events or programmes that are organized by the faculty or students involving the faculty members.
• To be a platform for the students to be actively involved in activities that are organized by the faculty; and a place for the students to nurture their talents
• To act as an ambassador for the faculty to the general public regarding the development of computer science and information techno-logy. This helps the faculty to introduce academic programmes through social and community service programmes such as Khidmat Sosial and Program Bakti Siswa.

Organization The PERTEKMA committee members are elected annually among the students from the faculty. For this year session 2012/2013, PERTEKMA has elected 16 committee members. The portfolios were increased from its predecessor years to assist in managing and supervising the increased number of students and activities organised. The PERTEKMA election takes place in the annual students meet and the newly appointed committee members are officially appointed by the Dean of the faculty. The association has three appointed advisors who are also members of the faculty to assist the association in organising the events. Moreover, an ex-officio from the Student Representative Council, who is also a representative for the students from the faculty, will play a role for future communications bet-ween the faculty and the university.
Activities PERTEKMA has been actively organising activities for its members and the faculty in the past years. These activities are both on academic and non-academic. Previously, one of the main activities was to help raise fund for Sarawak Children’s Cancer Society, in conjunction with Faculty Annual Dinner event. MENTOR-MENTEE SYSTEM
Mission The Faculty of Computer Science and Information Technology is committed to the recruitment and retention of excellent faculty. The purpose of Mentor Mentee System is basically to attainment of that goal and aims to assist student in maximally developing their learning environment. The Faculty strongly supports and encourages the mentoring mission which includes: • The Academic Deputy Dean serve as an administrative mentor • Faculty lecturers serve as programmatic mentors • Procedures to identify and address problems in the developing stages of the learning of students • A system for documentation established and maintained on a timely basis

Objectives The main objectives of this Mentor Mentee System include: • Retain new students by helping them to become more familiar with the university culture, and how to accomplish their studies. • Help current students grow and develop professionally as UNIMAS
students. • Foster a cooperative network among the students by helping those meet and network with all lecturers. • Increase the flow of accurate and timely information through the university. • Contribute to student morale, motivation, and a sense of community. • Create a culture that fosters creativity and innovative thinking.
Definition of Mentoring Mentoring is when a role model, or mentor, offers support to another person. A mentor has knowledge and experience in an area and shares it with the person being mentored. For example, in FCSIT, each lecturer has been assigned as a mentor for students to guide them in their studies and help them to become more familiar with university culture.
Activities
• Mentor Mentee Day
Mentor Mentee Day is a half-day celebration organized by FCSIT. It celebrates the positive, long-lasting effects of mentoring and is the beginning of the mentoring session for each new batch in September.

The goals of Mentor Mentee Day are:
• To develop new relationship between new students and lecturers. • To provide an opportunity for new students to know and get familiar with their mentor. • To host an exciting, fun-filled day for new students and their mentor to share and meet other pairs from across the program.
Mentor Mentee Day is an event associated with PERTEKMA (FCSIT) and normally taking place in or outside campus from 9.00 am – 1:00 p.m on Saturday in September. All first year students and lecturers from FCSIT were involved on that day. They are grouped according to their chosen program of study and have to participate in organized events, sharing experiences, learning, being entertained, and most importantly, having fun.
• Meet Mentor at Least Twice in a Semester
All new and current students are required to meet and discuss their academic plan and performance with their mentor at least twice in a Semester. The mentor will act as an academic advisor in guiding their mentees when they have a problem and motivate them to strive harder. However, other types of problems/questions related to career, emotion, medical, program details, finance, etc., which their mentor cannot handle should be directed to the appropriate channels such as UNIMAS counselor, program coordinator, deputy dean, or dean. The mentees must record all the details of discussion and other related issues in their meeting log book, and the mentor needs to proofread them and sign.
• Motivation Talks The Faculty usually gives the Motivation Talks to all or selected students every semester, in order to encourage and guide them to study smartly in UNIMAS.
