1 Angola Medical Equipment Country-Sector Fact Sheet 1. Product Description Medical equipment is designed to aid in the diagnosis, monitoring or treatment of medical conditions. There are several basic types of medical equipment: Diagnostic equipment includes medical imaging machines used to aid in diagnosis, examples of which are ultrasound and MRI machines, PET and CT scanners, and X-ray machines; Therapeutic equipment is another type of medical equipment and includes infusion pumps, medical lasers and LASIK surgical machines; Life support equipment is used to maintain a patient's bodily function. This includes medical ventilators, anaesthetic machines, heart-lung machines, ECMO and dialysis machines; Medical monitors allow medical staff to measure a patient's medical state. Monitors may measure patient vital signs and other parameters, including ECG, EEG, and blood pressure and dissolved gases in the blood; Medical laboratory equipment automates or helps analyze blood, urine and genes; and diagnostic medical equipment may also be used in the home for certain purposes, e.g. for the control of diabetes mellitus. 2. Overview According to Business Monitor International (2012), the global medical device sales will increase from USD347bn in 2011 to USD561bn in 2021, equating to a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 4.9%. types of medical equipment:

USD561bn in 2021, equating to a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 4.9%. The fastest increase in sales through to

2021 will be experienced in the Middle East and Africa, growing at 163%, Latin America at151% and Asia at113%.

According to Business Monitor International (2012), Angola’s pharmaceutical market was valued at USD286m in 2011.

2. Trade

2.1 Angola’s Global Trade in Medical Equipment

The figure below shows Angola’s trade of medical equipment related goods for the period 2002 to 2011. Angola’s exports of

medical equipment goods were valued at ZAR0.7m in 2011 compared to ZAR10.4m in 2010, decreasing by 93.3%. Imports

were valued at ZAR829m in 2011 compared to ZAR480m in 2010, increasing by 72.7%. Angola’s medical equipment sector

experienced a negative trade balance between 2002 and 2011.

The table below shows Angola’s global trade of medical equipment products for the 2011 period. The leading export product

was parts and accessories for application based on the use of X-rays, valued at ZAR0.4m, followed by instruments and

appliances used in medical or veterinary sciences (ZAR0.1m) and electro-diagnostic apparatus (ZAR0.1m). Other top export

products were composite diagnostic or laboratory reagents (ZAR0.1m); medical, surgical or laboratory sterilizers (ZAR0.1m)

and breathing appliances and gas masks (ZAR0.03m).

The leading medical equipment import product into Angola was instruments and appliances used in medical or veterinary

sciences, valued at ZAR185m. Composite diagnostic or laboratory reagents and -rays apparatus, medical/surgical/veterinary use

were ranked second and third valued at ZAR114m and ZAR45m. Other top import products were medical, surgical, dental or

veterinary furniture and parts (ZAR42m); syringes, with or without needles (ZAR41m) and needles, catheters, cannulae and the

like (ZAR40.6m).

The table below shows Angola’s destination markets for the medical equipment sector for the period 2011. South Africa was

the leading export market for the sector medical equipment sector from Angola in 2011, valued at ZAR0.4m. Portugal and

Ireland were ranked second and third, valued at ZAR0.07m and ZAR0.05m respectively. Other top export markets were the

United Kingdom (ZAR0.04m), Norway (ZAR0.03m) and Spain (ZAR0.03m).

source market for medical equipment to Angola valued at ZAR154m, followed by Germany and China valued at ZAR68m and

2.2 South African Trade of Medical Equipment Products with Angola

As depicted in the graph below, South Africa has maintained a positive trade balance with Angola, in terms of trade in medical

equipment related goods for the period 2002 to 2011. In 2011, South Africa exported medical equipment related goods

valued at ZAR49m in 2011 compared to ZAR33m in 2010, representing an increase of 48%. South Africa received imports of

in medical equipment related goods from Angola valued at ZAR0.4m in 2011 compared to ZAR2m in 2010, representing a

decrease of 80%.

The figures below show the growth performance of the top 10 medical equipment products traded between South Africa and

Angola. Oral and dental hygiene preparations were the fastest growing export product between 2010 and 2011, growing at

678%. X-rays apparatus and composite diagnostic or laboratory reagents were ranked the second and third fastest growing

export products between 2010 and 2011 growing at 638% and 77% respectively. Between 2007 and 2011, X-rays apparatus

was the fastest growing export product, growing at 483%,

Made up articles (textile) were the fastest growing export product between 2010 and 2011, growing at 157%, while parts and

accessories for radiation apparatus was the fastest growing import product between 2007 and 2011, growing at 53%.

2.3 Western Cape Trade in Medical Equipment Products with Angola

As depicted in the graph below, the Western Cape has maintained a positive trade balance with Angola, with the highest value

experienced in 2011. In 2011, the Western Cape exported medical equipment related goods valued at ZAR31m compared to

ZAR20m in 2010, representing an increase of 55%.

was Plastic household, toilet articles, valued at ZAR23bn, followed by plastic articles (ZAR3m) and made up articles (textile)

(ZAR1.2m). Other top export products were orthopaedic appliances, including crutches, surgical belts (ZAR1.2m); breathing

appliances and gas masks (ZAR0.5m) and spectacles, goggles except sunglasses (ZAR0.3m).
