Today’s presentation • Acknowledgements

• Objectives

• Background for the policy on research for health in Latin America

• The Regional Policy on Research for Health – Objectives with emphasis on governance and impact

• Tools for better research management

• Building successful bridges between users and producers of research

www.paho.org/portalinvestigacion It is precisely because we have very limited resources that we need more and better

research; we need to choose wisely. It is precisely because we have such limited

resources that we need to be organized with our research; we need to make the

most of what is available

Page 4: 20120727_LGCuervo_OPS-NeTropica Web

Objectives / opportunities

• Advocate for the regional Policy on Research for Health

and invite participants to get actively engaged in its

implementation

• Inspire champions for good research management

• Provide helpful resources for research sponsors and

advocates to organize research and use it to its potential

in improving people’s health

• Open the forum for ideas that can keep NeTropica a

lively and helpful network of skilled champions for

research for health

• Identify partnership opportunities / networking

Governance: clinical trials

What is a clinical trial?

• For the purposes of registration, a clinical trial is any

research study that prospectively assigns human

participants or groups of humans to one or more health-

related interventions to evaluate the effects on health

outcomes.

What is trial registration?

• WHO regards trial registration as the publication of an

internationally-agreed set of information about the design,

conduct and administration of clinical trials. These details

are published on a publicly-accessible website managed by

a registry conforming to WHO standards.
