DESCRIPTION
Year in Review for 2012TRANSCRIPT
APRIL 14, 2012 An intense thunderstorm brought heavy rain — close to 5 inches in parts of Norfolk — and prolonged hail. It turned some Norfolk streets into raging rivers, with water rising up to the headlights of vehicles trying to pass through. Here, Jason Newman and Jordan Davis, students at Norfolk High School, paddle around in flood water on an inflatable mattress near the intersection of Eighth Street and Michigan Avenue after the storm in Norfolk.
JUNE 12, 2012 Norfolk’s new Memorial AquaVenture Park opened for the summer. More than 63,000 people used the park, averaging 1,200 visitors per day.
JUNE 17, 2012 The inaugural events at the Nebraska Airfest attracted thousands of people to Norfolk to see, among other events, the U.S. Army Golden Knights parachute team and such aerobatics pilots as Jessy Panzer, who thrilled the weekend crowds at the Nebraska Airfest in Norfolk with her dynamic maneuvers.
AUGUST 4, 2012 This past summer, the heat arrived and the rain went away. All of Nebraska and about two-thirds of the United States were left in a crippling drought. The drought caused corn, Nebraska’s biggest cash crop, to take a serious hit and gave Nebraskans a serious reminder of what life was like back during the Dust Bowl of the 1930s.
JULY 24, 2012 The drought also contributed to a spate of wildfires across North Central Nebraska. Here, firefighters plan an attack at the Fairfield Creek fire near Springview. The sprawling fire, sparked by lightning, charred at least 50,000 acres over several counties.

the new Johnny carson billboard welcomes motorists driving north on Highway
81 into Norfolk and is located on the west side of the highway near Wis-Pak. The bill-
board south of Norfolk once was one of several that welcomed visitors to the city with
Johnny Carson’s likeness. Now, only one remains and it had been numerous years
since it first was erected. Weather and time had taken their toll on the appearance of
the billboard.
