    We are abuzz with

    Valentines gift ideasM

    y grandmother seemed

to set the tone for much

    of our holiday celebra-

    tions. Her giving na-

    ture, her ability to find

    quirky humor in the everyday,

and her welcoming heart set the

example for the rest of us. Honey,

as everyone called her, had a par-

    ticular approach to Valentines

Day that made an impact.Over the years on Valentines

Day, I have always appreciated the

hugs from my mom or the simple

candy my dad would bring home from his

school fundraiser. In college, my mom would

send cookies, or popcorn, or flowers to cheer

my day, they always did. And my family al-

ways does their best to keep up the magic of

Valentines Day with plenty of love notes.

We try and follow Honeys example every

year by treating co-workers and friends to

heart candies and cupcakes or humorous

trinkets. My children and I prepare for the

day with homemade valentines made gener-

ously with red glitter and doilies. We look for

    weeks before Valentines Day for

perfect gifts for those we love and

    care about.

    With the approval of beekeep-

ing in Oak Park, it seemed appro-

priate to choose the bee and honey

as a theme for our Valentines

    section this year. Valentines Day

which sits on the cusp of spring

    seems perfectly positioned as a

reminder that gardens are soon tobe in bloom. I have to say a special

thanks to our own Debbie Becker

for helping to connect the dots a

bit for us. Shes written a wonderful piece

about bees, beekeeping and St. Valentine.

In the spirit of the day, I hope we can all

carry an extra bee like flutter in our hearts.

My grandmother, Honey, would tell us to be

extra sweet and caring to our friends and

neighbors. She would urge us to spare some

extra space in our hearts to embrace everyone

and their uniqueness. Me personally, I think

she had it right. And the bees, well they work

pretty hard to do some beautiful things in the

world, their labor of love so to speak.

    For the

    love of bees GiftsB

    eekeepers, like gardeners,

    spend winters dreaming of

    spring and all its possibili-

ties. Now that beekeepingis allowed in Oak Park for

the first time in over 70 years, Ive

bought hives, which have to be

built and painted, and Ive ordered

ordered bees to be delivered in

April or May. Until then, my fancy

turns to honey and b eeswax, just

    in time for Valentines Day.

    Bees and Valentines Day have

    a long history together, going

    all the way back to

    young Cupid. Cupid

lay down in a bed of

    roses, only to be stung

    by a bee hiding among

    the petals. Cupid

    later picked up his

    quiver, and dipped his

    arrowheads in honey

    to lessen their sting

    while delivering his

    dose of romance.

    Valentine, another

    Roman and a 3rd-

    century physician,used honey to sweeten

    his bitter medicines.

    Now, that physician

is known to us as St. Valentine,

the patron saint of both love and

    beekeepers.

    After harvesting pollen and

    nectar, honeybees pack pollen in

pockets on their back legs. Their

    second stomach stores nectar for

the flight home, where the plunder

is stored in cells, called honey-

combs. The bees add enzymes to

the nectar, which is then fanned

by their wings to bring the water

content down to 18%, the consis-

tency of honey. The honey cell is

then capped with wax, and saved

    for later consumption.

A healthy hive may consist of

50,000 bees: one queen, a handful

of drones, the rest female worker

bees. The queen leaves the hive

    only onceto mate. She spends

most of her time laying up to 2,000

eggs a day. A drones only job is to

mate with the queen from another

hive. (Odd fact: drones come from

    unfertilized eggs and have no

father.) The industrious femaleworker bees hold down a variety

    of jobs; nursemaid, housecleaner,

    lady-in-waiting, and comb-builder,

    before moving on to foragingcol-

    lecting pollen and nectar. Those

female worker bees may fly more

than five miles away from the

hive, at 15 miles per hour, to find

the type of flowers they are look-

    ing for.

    With all of that being

    said, urban bees these

    days are having a field

    day! Having beehives

on a small city lot may

    seem counterintuitive,

    but flowers in cities

    are now more plenti-

    ful and varied than

    in the country due to

    the miles and miles of

    monoculturethe ge-

    netically-modified corn

    and soybeans fields of

    corporate farmsTrue, relationships

    with bees can be

    painful. I am not just

    talking about the stings here.

    Its also about unrequited love.

They dont need us or even really

know we exist, but boy do we need

    them. Bees pollinate all across

    our country from almond trees

    in Northern California, apple

    blossoms in Washington State,

cranberry bogs in Cape Cod and

    blueberries in Maine. We enjoy

    our most brightly-colored fruits

    and vegetables, roses and many

other flowers because of the hard

work of bees. And while we could

    celebrate Valentines Day without

bees, it would be a lot less colorful

    and tasty.

    I think Ill spend Valentines

Day painting hearts on my hives

and raise a glass of mead (honey

wine), honey beer, or tea sweet-

ened by honey, in honor of these

    wonderful, fuzzy little creatures.
