E njoy spectacular blue skies and crisp mountain air, surrounded by three breathtaking mountain ranges

while you skate on the frozen waters of Cranberry Marsh. Depending on ice conditions and snow levels, there are several channels to skate through. An oval and a pond hockey rink will be groomed for use each season if the condition of the ice allows. Always proceed with caution. How to get there: From Highway 5, follow 17th Avenue to McKirdy Road, turn right on McKirdy Road, and look for a parking area on the right side. Access the skating area from the parking lot. Maps are available at your place of accommodation. Please bring your own skates as there is nowhere in town to rent them.

Valemount offers the real winter experience. Valemount is the base for supreme alpine snowmobiling. Open areas,

deep powder, and great views will energize you and bring out the best of every snowmobiler. Groomed trails provide access to the most spectacular alpine areas in Clemina, Allan Creek and Chappell Creek.

Outdoor enthusiasts will find here good cross-country skiing, and some of the finest snowcat-skiing and backcountry skiing. Of course, the Valemount area also offers world-renowned heli-skiing options in the Rockies and Cariboo Mountains.

One can even venture deep into the heart of the Rockies behind a team of friendly sled dogs. You will experience snow capped forests, frozen waterfalls, and icy rivers in a magnificent mountain setting. You can even go ice fishing and afterwards “chill” with your friends for a drink and dinner in a cozy restaurant. Valemount is known throughout North America as one of the world’s best

environments for mountain snowmobiling and wilderness backcountry adventure. Valemount boasts world-class alpine snowmobiling and offers challenges for the biggest and best snowmobiles and the most experienced riders. The area’s groomed trails also offer novice riders the same spectacular scenery and alpine riding experience. Winter in Valemount typically begins in mid-November and ends in April. Spring riding, however, may continue into May and early June. December through March offers the best mountain conditions and usually provides fresh deep-powder snow for everyone to enjoy.

Valemount has four managed snowmobile areas, where trail passes are required, with groomed trails that access the incredible alpine

snowmobiling terrain. It also boasts many other riding area

This area is great for socked in days or for a relaxed, casual and enjoyable ride. The area is accessed by

turning right at the first intersection just south of town and following the road until you reach an open parking area at the beginning of the Westridge Forest Service Road. There is a main family loop that will bring you back to the parking lot and will pass a little warming cabin roughly half way though the loops. Follow the FSR for approximately 13 km until you reach the hydro dam. From here, cross the bridge at the station and proceed right to pick up the trail again that will take you through the trees and back to the Valley bottom. There are many trails to explore in this area although it is rarely groomed. Westridge is ideal for beginner riding. There is intermittent cell phone service available on the trail. Westridge also holds some amazing alpine riding as well, but access is more for the intermediate rider. Please see our website at www.valemountrecdevelopment.com for more information.

To access this area, drive to the large parking area accessed 35 km south of Valemount on the west side of Hwy 5. There is an 8-km long, regularly

groomed trail with fast elevation gain. This is a VARDA managed trail, with an alpine cabin and outhouse facility. Some riding experience is required. The area has something for everyone, from mellow lake and meadow riding near the cabin to far off mountain exploration as well as climbs to challenge the most versatile athlete. A smaller area with skate park-like terrain, Keyhole is accessed from the Clemina parking area 30 km south of Valemount on the east side of Hwy 5. Please ask at the booth for directions from the parking area if you are unsure of where to go. There is a 9-km long groomed trail leading up to the alpine from the Clemina parking area, although no cabin or outhouse facilities exist in the alpine area. Cell phone service is possible on the trail.

CLEMINA CREEK


A favourite of many visitors to the area, Clemina has something for

everyone and is highly recommended to the first timer to Valemount. There is a large parking lot 30 km south of Valemount on the east side of Hwy 5. There is a beautiful 17 km trail to a sub-alpine cabin. Travelling another 4 km down the groomed trail will take you to the Goat Ridge Bowl alpine areas.

This is a VARDA managed area with a regularly groomed trail, maintained cabin and outhouse facilities. Clemina is an excellent family area where beginners can travel to alpine terrain. Riders of all skill levels can find suitable play areas. This area does have a CRA Closure in the Dixon Glacier. Please respect and obey all posted signs and refrain from riding in the plantations.

“Pack It In - Pack It Out”Garbage can mar the quality of a recreation experience - particularly when viewed against a mantle of white snow. Any garbage left along trails or at any of our cabins is unnatural and annoying to riders and winter recreationists. The

backcountry motto remains the same as in the summer.

Remember to ride preparedCarry all necessary avalanche equipment (beacon, shovel, probe), flares, water proof matches, wind proof lighter, hot packs, salt, sugar, high energy bars, rope, wire, tape, extra gloves and socks, space blanket, flint strikers, water, good first aid kit, communication (cell or sat phone, SPOT), GPS, Leatherman tool, saw, headlamp, spare batteries, signal mirror, bag of toilet paper, whistle, tea, pencil and paper, tool kit; these are just a few items you may need.

Remember, you are a LONG ways from help if something goes wrong.


CHAPPELL CREEK

Valemount’s prize jewel, this area can boast some of the best snow

levels in the Valley. There is a large parking area and trailhead 58 km south of Valemount on the west side of Hwy 5. This is also a VARDA managed area although there is no alpine cabin or outhouse. There is a scenic 26 km trail to the alpine with a fast elevation gain in the last 3 km. This is a long trail and we do our best to keep it maintained to standard, although due to high grooming costs the area is only groomed once a week and can be a bit rough. Chappell Creek is a Caribou sensitive area, please follow area boundaries, encourage other riders to do the same, and report any witnessed infractions to the drop box in the parking area.

Is the hard packed snow and crowded lineups of your regular ski resort starting to lose its lustre?

If so, a trip to the Valemount area may be just what you need!

There are a variety of ways to get your powder snow fix.

For those willing to put a little muscle power in to get a few turns in the fluffy white stuff there are a couple of options available. The most popular option with the locals is to use a snowmobile to gain some elevation and then it’s all leg power to get you to the snow covered slopes in the Rocky, Cariboo and Monashee mountain ranges. The McKirdy and Clemina YORA cabins (page 19) also offer some opportunities for those looking to get off the beaten path and into an area where you may most likely be the only two footed creatures for miles around.

If you would like a warmer and more comfortable trip into the powder world, snowcat-skiing may be right up your alley. Our local Cat-skiing operation is based on Mica Mountain and owner Terry Cinnamon can be reached at 250 566 9809.

Then of course for those with the budget Valemount does have some great Heli-Skiing. Yellowhead Helicopter’s base is only minutes north of Valemount and has a variety of options which vary from day skiing to multi day packages. Snowshoe or ski into the backcountry and experience rustic mountain living in one of the cozy cabins built and maintained by YORA.

The two cabins are available for year round use. Each cabin is equipped with bunks and foam mattresses to sleep 4–6 people. The cabins are also equipped with a wood heating stove, pots, pans, cutlery, axe, saw and a limited supply of wood. Nearby creeks provide fresh water.

Camp Creek: Camp Creek has a good variety of skiing options and is generally the first area to have sufficient snow due to its location at the northerly base of Canoe Mountain. Camp Creek is located 11 km south of Valemount on the east side of Highway 5. The access road is 2.5 km and is ploughed on a low priority basis. This area has a picnic shelter, warming cabin and pit toilets.

Jackman Flats: Jackman Flats has a large sign in the parking area showing the various ski loops, which vary in length from 1.4 km to 6.2 km Jackman Flats is located 13 km north of Valemount on the west side of the Highway 5 and the parking lot is regularly ploughed.

Bell Mountain Approximately 13 km west of McBride and has 15 km of groomed and track-set trails, which are colour-coded and maintained by the Yellowhead Ski Club. There is a warming hut

along the way and breathtaking scenery, including some lakes.

Dore Valley Trails: These lower elevation trails can be reached from either Dore River Road or Lamming Pit Road at 5km and 7km along Highway 16, west of McBride. A warming hut, toilets and parking area are provided.

Telemark Skiing & Touring For the more experienced skiers, two backcountry cabins can be found well off the Dore River Forest access roads. One cabin sits at the foot of the Eagle Glacier in the South Dore Valley. The Ozalenka Cabin rests on the alpine in the West Dore Valley

Sled Assisted SkiingP owerboarding or “Sled Assisted Skiing” has been growing

rapidly over the last few years and is becoming a very popular activity for the backcountry boarder or skier. The idea for the sled assisted ski/board area project came along years ago by a local group of volunteers known as the Powerboarders. The Valemount Area Recreation Development Association (VARDA) is now working with this group to see this dream come to reality.

VARDA is working within the Sustainable Resource Management Plan (SRMP) to create this unique recreation facility for the public. The final product would be a publicly used, sled assisted ski/board area on Crystal Ridge as described in the Valemount to Blue River SRMP.

The idea is to have a wide track up the ridge and users will travel up with snowmobiles and be dropped off to ride spaced runs off the either aspect of the mountain leading to designated pickup points, similar to mountain bike shuttling.

The project is well underway and has many hours of time invested into it by the initial Powerboarding Group, VARDA Volunteers and Staff. Funding for the ridge creation, and run/trail clearing have come from the Columbia Basin Trusts (CBT) Community Initiatives Program and began two years ago with initial access

clearing and bridge site plan preparations. Currently we have one full length run completed with a total of four runs scheduled for the grand opening in December 2012. Our up track is in place and the final hurdle is the installation of a ninety-five foot bridge over the Canoe River to finalize our access to the facility from the Westridge staging area. While completing this project VARDA tried to be as sustainable as possible, by utilizing old forestry roads and

existing staging areas to minimize our impact on the land base as much as possible.

The CBT’s Community Initiatives Program has been a huge part in our ability to construct this facility for the public. VARDA has received two grants under the CIP funding, one for initial construction and another for the bridge installation over the Canoe River.

a one of a kind recreation area right out our door stop, which will not only provide additional opportunities for the locals already here, but will attract another user group to the area, adding to our winter tourism industry. We are very excited to see this project come to life”

Snowmobiling

Alpine powder riding around McBride is great for beginners, intermediate or experienced riders. Three designated sledding areas are available with groomed trails from parking lots to riding areas. Trail passes are sold at the trailheads and vouchers are available at the Visitor Information Centre on 1st Avenue, at the heritage train station from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Stop by for your free copy of our Outdoor Recreation Guide.

Bell Mountain is a multi-use area shared with the Yellowhead Ski Club and is located 13 km west of McBride. It has a 15 km groomed access trail to the alpine that offers amazing scenery and family oriented riding and sightseeing. Snowmobilers please respect other recreationists and stay to the right on your ride to the alpine. A cabin is located at the end of the groomed trail courtesy of the McBride Community Forest. Lucille Mountain is accessed through the village via 1st Avenue to Samson Road to Lucille Mountain Road and is just 3 km from town. A loading ramp and toilet facilities are located at the parking area just half a kilometer along the road. Enjoy trail riding or extreme hill climbing. A heated cabin is located 12.5 km at the end of a groomed trail. (GPS: 53-15-19 N, 120-15-11 W)

The Renshaw is only 15 minutes from McBride and 30 km up a groomed access trail. It is accessed on Mountainview Road (east of McBride) 21 km to McKale Forest Road. You must have have a four-wheel drive vehicle to access this area. This is a remote area so do not attempt to go here without the proper equipment (beacons, shovels, probes and extra gas). Be sure to inform someone where you are going and do not travel alone. A cabin can be found at (GPS 53-28-18 N, 119-58-14 W).

Know the Snow and Ride to the Conditions If you are riding in the backcountry:

• Take an Avalanche Course; • visit www.avalanche.ca for a list of providers.• Come prepared with the proper equipment (transceiver, shovel and

probe) and practice with it at least once a month.• Choose to ride with people with avalanche training and respect for

mountain hazards.• Be open to adjusting your plan based on the daily avalanche advisory.• Recognize avalanche terrain.• Do not gather your group in terrain that is threatened from above, allow

yourself a wide margin of safety.• SPEAK UP when you see others using unsafe practices; you may just save

Rider Safety has been a very important topic in the snowmobile

world lately and the Valemount Area Recreation Development Association is working hard to promote that message. Upon approaching the ticket booth in each of Valemount’s Managed areas (Clemina, Allan, and Chappell Creek) you will likely first notice either a green circle or red X of brightly coloured LED lights. These eye catching units are Beacon Checkers and will alert the sales staff or approaching riders, if they are wearing an avalanche beacon and if it is turned on and functioning properly. This unit has had great success already as an education tool and a reminder as some riders either forget to turn the unit on properly or are simply so excited to get out for a ride that on occasion, they can forget to put on their beacon all together.

A BCA Beacon Training Station has also been installed in the Clemina Creek Snowmobiling Area, just across from the Cabin with support from The Falls Family, Alpine Country Rentals and VARDA. This is a fenced off section where riders can turn on up to four strike plates buried within the

compound and practice searching for single or multiple burials. This is an awesome tool for honing your self-rescue techniques and should be used at least once by every visitor to the area.

The Warming Cabins have also received an extremely unique safety item thanks to Whisper Creek Log Homes and Spaz Logging. The Allan and Clemina Creek Warming Cabins now have SPOT LOCATOR Beacons installed in “break away” boxes similar to fire extinguishers. The idea is that if there is a serious medical emergency, someone could break the barrier and activate the beacon via the 911 feature. The feature can drastically increase response times and will give exact coordinates of the incident location and alert rescuers. Instructions for use are posted beside the box as well as inside the box itself.
