• Severe Weather and Lightning: seek shelter indoors

• Tornado Watch: conditions are favorable for a tornado.

• Tornado Warning: a tornado has been sighted; time to seek shelter.

• Self Test: While working on the grounds crew, how will you be notified of severe weather conditions at UWM?

• Please seek shelter during severe weather. Most buildings have tornado shelters in well protected areas located away from exterior glass or free-span roofs.

• The Grounds Maintenance building (top photo) may not be the best location during a tornado.

• The adjacent Klotsche-Pavilion parking garage (bottom photo) might be a better option if you can get there safely.

• Eye protection (“Mandatory for string trimmers and edgers! Recommended for everything else!” We supply most PPE, but you are expected to wear the appropriate PPE based on the hazard.)

• Gloves• Hearing protection (I-pods don’t

qualify!) • Shoes: good sturdy work shoes at

a minimum for using powered machinery, no open toed or sandals if you’re working on the grounds crew.

Footwear and clothing is your responsibility; other PPE (safety eyewear, hearing protection, gloves, hardhats, safety vests, etc.) is provided by UWM.

• The supervisory staff will provide you with guidance on safely operating:• riding and push mowers• weed whackers (string trimmers)• bush trimmers• sprayers• chippers• tillers• tower Take Offs (PTOs), point of

operation, nip points, machine guarding, etc.

• Please present any questions/concerns to your supervisor.

Eye protection is mandatory when using or working near a string trimmer and for edging!

• Know and follow the concept of ”zero energy state”.

• Follow the guidance of senior personnel and the manufacturer’s instructions for all maintenance and adjustment.

• As a grounds employee, why protect yourself from noise?

• Hearing protection requirements for what equipment?

• Inserts vs. Muffs?• “I-pods and personal

listening devices are not PPE!”

• Community noise ordinance.

“Excessive volume may be enjoyable today…but will result in permanent hearing loss.”

• The Noise Indicator badge will flash “green” at less than 85 decibels (dB), and flash “red” when over 85 dB.

• QUESTION: Your noise “dose”, or your potential for noise induced hearing loss, is based on what factors?
