The 2012 track and field season promises to be a roller coaster of emotion for Southeastern Louisiana . Head coach Sean Brady will carry 37 newcomers into

the indoor season, with more expected to join the ros-ter in time for the outdoor season .

“This is the first year we’ve had this many freshmen,” Brady said . “It’s certainly been trying on our patience, but patience is something we have to have . Who they are now is certainly not who they’ll be in May . Who they are as freshmen is certainly not who they’ll be as a junior or senior.”

Just before May, Southeastern will host its first home meet in more than a decade . The Lions and Lady Lions will chris-ten the new facility April 20 with the Southeastern Invita-tional . Coach Brady expects to have the keys to his new facility by early January .

The new Southeastern Track Complex has a Beynon sur-face with encapsulated granules and a dedicated facility should provide the program with an important recruiting tool .

“Our team is built surrounding a full squad,” Brady said. “We don’t specialize in any event area . Our recruiting philosophy is that we take the best athletes available and coach them up . We should have athletes in just about every event.”

The underclassmen-lad-en roster of athletes will rely heavily on a handful of experienced athletes early in the year .

All-American Kovey

Simmons leads the way in the men’s pole vault . T .J . Herbert re-turns after posting the Lions’ top three times in the 60-meter dash last season .

On the women’s side, Southeastern returns its two best pole vaulters in Brittany Pfantz and Colleen Butler .

“We know we have some quality pole vaulters and an-other horizontal jumper on the men and women’s sides – Phillippe Moore and Mi-chelle Ogashi, respectively,” Brady said . “We have good core group of sprinters . Shannon Grover is coming back for his final campaign.”

The indoor season kicks off in early December at the ASU Kickoff Klassic .

“The meet at Arkansas State is certainly an early meet, but it’s still an opportunity for us to compete,” head coach Sean Brady said . “It’s a culmination of all the hard work and effort in the fall . I’m excited and anxious to

see who will step up and compete.”

It will be the first collegiate competition for the ma-jority of the roster .

“We hope that they’re more anxious than nervous,” Brady said. “We’re going to find out about some of these young athletes . The good ones are going to step in and maybe not perform as well as they could, but they’re going to step in and fight.”

ry Rop to lead the distance runners .

LeGrange finished every 2011 cross country meet as Southeast-ern’s top male athlete . Rop returns after exhausting his cross country eligibility . They will be joined on the men’s side by ex-perienced runners M .J . Ahmad, Paul Arthur, Jesse McDavitt and Matt Mouton .

The Lady Lions will be led by Bethany Burst, the Southeastern record-holder in the women’s 3,000-meter stee-plechase . She will be joined by returnees Brittany Blackmon, Heather Fitzhenry, Naomi Jeruto, Emily McAfee and Lindsey Toups .

Sprints/HurdlesGrover and Herbert give the Lions unquestion-ably the best one-two sprinting package in the Southland Conference . Sophomores Shaq Brown, Tarvoris Mack and Jordan Rosemond lend sup-port while the freshmen get up to speed .

Tess Mullings, Alicia Noel, Ogashi and Nia Stewart give the Lady Lions a strong combination hurdlers and sprinters .

JumpsOgashi and Stewart also will see time on jumps for the Lady Lions . Ogashi holds both Southeastern’s indoor and outdoor re-cord in the triple jump .

Butler and Pfantz will be joined by Pfantz’s young-er sister Ashley in the pole vault .

Moore leads the way for the men . His efforts will be supplemented by Brandon Daniels and Joh-nel Reams .

The Lions strongest area outside of sprints is in the pole vault . Simmons has support from Kevin Dorhauer and freshman Vance Law .

ThrowsShalicia Rochon, Renada Living and Jessica Fekete give the Lady

Lions a strong, experienced throwing contingent while the men will look to fresh-men to mature quickly . Ro-chon turned in two of the best shot put performances in Southeastern history in back-to-back meets during the 2011 outdoor season .

Multi EventsThe big indoor meet for the multi events athletes is the

ASU Invitational, Southeastern’s second trip of the season to Ar-kansas State .

“We’re going up to this meet at Arkansas State primarily to take our multi-event athletes,” head coach Sean Brady said. “We have a heptathlon and a pentathlon . It’s the only meet we have an op-

portunity to run these.”

In his 12th season as Southeastern Louisiana’s track and field coach, Sean Brady eagerly awaits the challenges of coaching a young squad this season . The former South-

eastern pole vaulter has built the Lions and Lady Lions into a force in the highly competitive league and expects contin-ued success as his squad learns to compete . Shortly after winning the men’s conference title in 2009, Brady made program history once again as the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association named him the 2009 South Central Region Co-Men’s Head Coach of the Year, sharing the award with Chris Bucknam, head coach of the 2009 SEC champion and traditional na-tional powerhouse program at the University of Arkansas . The national honor came on the heels of being named the Southland Conference Coach of the Year . “I’m very honored to receive this award,” Brady said. “It’s nice to see our program mentioned with some of the best in the nation . However, this award is not about a head guy . This is a credit to the effort our kids put in all year long and a credit to the support our administration and university has given us . Without that, something like this wouldn’t be possible . So I’m happy that our program has put itself in a position to get itself mentioned with one of the best pro-grams in the nation.” Brady’s main duties include overseeing the Southeastern sprinters, hurdlers and relay teams; a group that broke three school records and saw five NCAA Mideast Regional quali-fiers during the course of the 2009 season. In total, the Alexandria native oversaw a team that pro-duced ten student-athletes that qualified for NCAA post-season competition in 15 different events . Brady’s 2009 Lions also produced the SLC Athlete of the Year (sopho-more distance runner Henry Rop) and Outstanding Field Performer of the Year (junior thrower Adonson Shallow) . Southeastern Louisiana University’s storied athletic history dates back over three-quarters of a century .

Now, 15 intercollegiate sports strong, with nearly 330 student-athletes, the Lions are set to enter their 12th year of Southland Conference membership poised for aca-demic and competitive growth into the next century . Southeastern Louisiana University Athletics competes at the Division I level as a member of the NCAA and the Southland Conference (SLC) and spon-sors 15 varsity teams - eight women’s and seven men’s . For women, Southeastern sponsors soccer, volleyball, cross country, indoor and outdoor track and field, bas-ketball, softball and tennis . Men’s athletics sponsored are football, basketball, base-ball, golf, cross country and indoor and outdoor track and field . Since joining the Southland Conference in the 1997-98 year, Southeastern has won 21 conference championships, includ-ing women’s soccer, women’s tennis and men’s outdoor track and field in just the

past two years . Southeastern’s athletic history has many notable chapters including winning national championships in men’s outdoor track in 1975 and women’s basketball in 1976-77 . Southeastern’s 1954 undefeated foot-ball team is well remembered as one of the finest in the school’s 60-year gridiron annals, and many former football players have gone on to distinguished careers in the NFL . The 1975 baseball team had a glorious year when they advanced to the Division II College World Series, finishing third in the nation . Today, Southeastern strives to be the best among its peers in the SLC and sister institutions in the proud state of Louisiana . It has posted its best marks in the Men’s All Sports Standings, winning the trophy for the first time after the 2008-09 year, and has led all Louisiana institutions in the Commissioners’ Cup standings the past three years . Southland Conference championships

offer Southeastern automatic bids to NCAA post-season play in men’s and women’s basketball, baseball, volleyball, softball, women’s soccer and men’s golf . The school has earned five berths since joining the league, with the latest coming in 2009 with the women's soccer team claiming its first-ever berth in the NCAA Championships . Southeastern also made its mark in post-season NCAA Championship com-petition, with the golf team placing 23rd in the nation in 1998’s championship tournament, along with qualifying four golfers for the NCAA championship tour-nament four times and advancing to the NCAA regionals in 2000 and 2007; with the baseball team playing in two NCAA championship regionals in the 1990s; qual-ifying numerous individuals for the NCAA Championship indoor and outdoor track meets and advancing student-athletes in cross country . Southeastern student-athletes have been named All-Americans in golf and men’s and women’s track and field, and

Bart Bellairs, former director of inter-collegiate athletics at Savannah State University in Savannah, Ga ., and a

senior athletics administrator at Virginia Military Institute was named the 15th Director of Athletics at Southeastern on Nov . 24, 2009 . Bellairs succeeds Joel Erdmann, who accepted a similar position at the University of South Alabama in August . Southeastern men’s golf coach Tim Baldwin has served as interim director since Erdmann’s depar-ture . “We are excited to welcome Bart Bellairs to our staff,” said President John L . Crain . “He has a broad range of accom-plishments in athletic administration and shares Southeastern’s focus on the ‘stu-dent’ part of the student-athlete equation . He has a proven track record in inspir-ing his athletes and staff to achieve their full potential, whether in the classroom or in athletic competition . And he has experience in handling marketing, pro-motion, fundraising and budgetary issues, important skills in these days of tightened

finances.” “I liked what I saw at Southeastern from the start but when my wife Jacki and I met the people, we knew we had found a home,” Bellairs said. “My whole life I have spent time in college towns; growing up, as a coach, and as an administrator, and I have been blessed by living in some great places . When I started preparing for the interview I was very impressed with the campus and the attention Southeastern paid to supporting the students; but when I met the people -- the faculty, coaches, and members of the community – I wanted to be a part of it.” At Southeastern, Bellairs will oversee 15 NCAA Division I affiliated programs that compete in the Southland Conference . Since joining the Southland in 1997, the Lions have captured 21 regular-season or

tournament championships, including four regular-season titles in women’s soccer, three in women’s tennis, two in men’s bas-ketball and two in men’s golf . Southeastern also claimed the Southland Men’s All-Sports Trophy in 2008-09, highlighted by the 2009 Men’s Outdoor Track and Field championship with the women’s soccer team earning its first-ever berth to the NCAA Championships . Prior to his move to Hammond, Bellairs was at Savannah State, an NCAA Division I program, with 15 teams, since July 2008 . There he implemented an academics suc-cess plan that included an academic “road map” for each student-athlete from regis-tration to graduation . He developed a Title IX/Gender Equity program that involved reworking the athletic budget to resolve long-time problems with staffing, facilities and scholarships . During his tenure at Savannah State, football, men’s basketball, softball and women’s volleyball teams all saw significant improvement in seasonal wins . Prior to joining Savannah State, Bellairs

served as senior associate director of inter-collegiate athletics from 2005 to 2008 and head basketball coach from 1993 to 2005 at VMI in Lexington, Va . Responsibilities included marketing and promotions, ticket operations, management of the licensing program and serving as director for all key athletic facilities . There he created new pricing strategies, athletic department promotions and new revenue streams . As head basketball coach, he was named the Southern Conference Coach of the Year, the Virginia Coach of the Year and the “Sports Illustrated” Unknown Coach of the Year . Bellairs also served as assistant basket-ball coach at James Madison University in Harrisonburg, Va ., from 1988 to 1993, where his teams saw one NCAA tourna-ment appearance and five NIT appear-

ances; as assistant basketball coach at the University of Massachusetts (1986-1988); assistant basketball coach at the University of Maryland (1984-1986); and head basket-ball coach, head cross country coach and assistant baseball coach at Wilkes College in Wilkes Barre, Pa . (1983-1985) . He holds a master of science degree in physical education and athletics adminis-tration from Western Illinois University and a bachelor of arts degree in sociology/social work from Warren Wilson College in Asheville, N .C . NCAA DIVISION I ATHLETICS

In an era of considerable change in intercollegiate athletics, the Southland Conference continues to be a model of stability and consistent achievement as it celebrates the academic and athletic accomplishments of its member

institutions . What began as a small gathering of college administrators over 43 years ago, the Southland Conference has transformed itself into a dynamic and re-spected consortium of 12 member universities in three states . Beginning with a historic meeting of five institutions in Dallas on March 15, 1963, that included current members Lamar University (then Lamar State College of Technology) and the University of Texas at Arlington (then Arlington State College), the Southland Conference set on an extraordinary course that has proven suc-cessful well into its fifth decade of existence. On July 1, 2006, the Southland Conference commemorated another mile-stone as the league membership reached 12, marking the largest configuration ever for the organization . The addition of the University of Central Arkansas and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi expands the Southland into the Little Rock metro area and into the eighth largest city in Texas . UCA and A&M-Corpus Christi immediately enhanced the Southland Conference in innumerable ways, including athletic and academic successes, strong and principled leadership, and strong fan support and media coverage . All told, the revised membership of the Southland encompasses over 160,000 current students and an alumni base of approximately 700,000 . Famous alums from Southland Confer-ence schools include former President Lyndon B . Johnson (Texas State), CBS news anchor Dan Rather (Sam Houston State), U .S . Central Com-mand general Tommy Franks (UT Arlington), NBA executive Joe Dumars (McNeese State), ABC Good Morning America host Robin Rob-erts (Southeastern Louisiana), country music star George Strait (Texas State), Major League Baseball stars Kevin Millar (Lamar) and Ben Broussard (McNeese State), NBA legend Scottie Pippen (Central Arkansas), and actor Lou Dia-mond Phillips (UT Arlington) . The cities of the Southland are diverse and progressive, ranging from international business and cultural centers such as the Dallas/Fort Worth metroplex, San Antonio and the New Orleans area, to the historical cities of Nacogdo-

ches, Texas, and Natchitoches, La ., to the home of the modern oil boom, Beau-mont, Texas, to the unique Cajun French cultures found in the Louisiana cities of Thibodaux and Lake Charles . Southland Conference institutions also draw large numbers of students from the metropolitan areas of Houston, Little Rock, Baton Rouge, Austin and Shreveport . The Southland sponsors 17 championship sports, all at the NCAA Divi-sion I level . The eight men’s sports include football, basketball, baseball, golf, tennis, cross country, and indoor and outdoor track and field. The women compete for nine championships in basketball, volleyball, softball, soccer, golf, tennis, cross country, and indoor and outdoor track and field. The Conference earns automatic qualification to NCAA championships in football, men’s and women’s basketball, baseball, softball, volleyball, men’s golf, men’s and women’s tennis, women’s soccer, men’s and women’s outdoor track and field, and men’s and women’s cross country . The Southland Conference has repeatedly demonstrated its commit-ment to the academic and athletic success of its student-athletes . With the F .L . McDonald Postgraduate Scholarship Award, the league an-nually honors one male and one female scholar-athlete with a stipend for postgraduate study . The Scholar-Athlete Award is given to each institution’s

male and female student-athlete with the highest grade point average . Also, student-athletes with grade point averages above 3 .0 are honored on the SLC’s annual All-Academic teams and Com-missioner’s Honor Roll . In addition to providing expanding opportuni-ties for student-athletes, the Southland Confer-ence and its member institutions are very in-volved in various community outreach programs . Many of these programs provide positive life skills training such as academics, citizenship and leader-ship to school-aged students in Southland com-munities . The Steve McCarty Citizenship Award, initiated in 2005-06 and named after the former Stephen F . Austin athletic director, properly rec-ognizes accomplishments off the court for a male and female student-athlete .
