Welcome...

At Tiffin University, our students endeavour to excel in both the classroom and the athletic arena. Our athletic programs have enjoyed tremendous success in recent years with conference championships, teams being nationally ranked and challenging at national

tournaments. There have been numerous individual accolades including All-Americans, and it is no small accomplishment that in the past few years we have set new standards of excellence with our individual and team academic achievements. We expect our student-athletes to be just as successful in the classroom. A recent self study conducted by the university indicated that, of all the athletes who completed their eligibility at Tiffin University in the last five years, 95% of those athletes graduated. While many colleges would be ecstatic with these results, we will never be content until it is 100%. We are proud of our rich history and look forward to setting new milestones as we enter the NCAA Division II playing field and the highly competitive Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. We are proud of our athletes and what they have accomplished. They have been the force behind the winning tradition that has been established, and I am confident the future will also be highly successful for Tiffin University athletics.

Welcome to this athletic season at Tiffin University. I invite you to watch and cheer for all of our women’s and men’s teams. Intercollegiate athletics play an important role at Tiffin University. Our athletic program also provides visibility and name recognition for TU, helps develop a sense of excitement, morale and school spirit on campus, and provides opportunities for students, employees, alumni, and supporters to unite behind a common goal. Tiffin University Head Coach Gary GoffGary Goff enters his second year as Head Football Coach at Tiffin University. He looks to continue to build the program after a debut season that saw a number of passing records fall.

In 2011 Goff started to implement the Air Raid offense, working with quarterback James Capello as he set a new single season completion percentage record (.692). The team also set new single game records for completions and touchdown passes along with receptions. With a strong recruiting season, Goff and his staff plan on continuing setting new standards heading into the 2012 season. Goff came to the Dragons after a highly successful season at West Virginia Wesleyan. Goff, who served as offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at Wesleyan, led the team from a 2-8 season in 2009 to a 9-2 mark in 2010, tying the most wins in school history in the process. The team was ranked nationally for the first time in school history while breaking 12 offensive school records.

Prior to West Virginia Wesleyan, Goff coached at Princeton University where he was the Pass Game Coordinator and Receivers Coach. He was also Co-Offensive Coordinator and Receivers Coach at New

Mexico State University for four seasons where he helped lead the team to a ranking of 2nd nationally in passing offense and 3rd nationally in total offense. That team also broke 21 offensive school records while ranking 15th in the nation in scoring offense. Goff also coached the nation’s top receiver, two-time All-American Chris Williams, who later signed with the Cleveland Browns.

Goff, who has been offensive coordinator for three different teams, also served in that capacity at Iowa Wesleyan University. He also coached for two seasons at Southeastern Louisiana University, helping that squad to lead the nation in total offense.

Goff played for powerful NCAA Division II Valdosta State under Hal Mumme. Goff was a receiver/kick returner and was also team captain his senior year, leading the team to the Gulf South Conference Championship in 1996. That squad also earned an NCAA play-off berth and the nation’s top

ranking during the regular season.

Goff, who earned a degree in Business Administration from Valdosta State, is a native of Picayune, Mississippi. He and his wife Tiffanie have two children, Tyler and Audrey.

Dragons Coaching StaffDefensive Coordinator Seth DuerrSeth Duerr enters his first year with the Dragons. He will serve as the defensive coordinator. Duerr comes to Tiffin after serving as the defensive coordinator at The College of Wooster for the past seven years. During his time at Wooster, Duerr coached both linebackers and defensive line, as well as being the special teams co-coordinator.

Duerr’s defenses have developed a reputation for a strong pass rush and excelling in red-zone situations among a number of other areas. All together, Wooster ranked among the top half of the league in scor-ing defense the past seven seasons, highlighted by the 2006 unit which was first in both scoring (14.8 ppg) and total defense (272.4 ypg) - the first such “double” in school history. Also that year, Wooster topped the conference in rushing defense (69.3 ypg), pass defense efficiency (108.5 rating), and sacks (37), and they posted back-to-back shutouts for the first time since 1980.

Prior to his time at Wooster, Duerr coached at Ohio Northern University (2004), where he was the defensive line coach of an 8-2 Polar Bear squad (four-win improvement from previous season), and a two-year graduate assistantship at Averett University (2002-03), where he coached the running backs. Duerr was a student assistant at Wooster during 2001.

Duerr played linebacker at Wooster from 1997-2000. Among the many highlights in his playing career were being the finalist for the Gagliardi Trophy, annually given to NCAA Div. III’s Outstanding Football Player of the Year, twice earning first-team All-American honors (1999-00), twice receiving the Hank Critchfield Award as the conference Defensive Player of the Year (1999-00), and becoming the fourth player in conference history to earn first-team honors all four years (1997-00). One of three three-time All-Americans at Wooster, Duerr ranks as the school’s all-time leading tackler (432) as well as fourth in sacks (17.5), and he was inducted into the school’s athletic Hall of Fame in 2011.

A native of Bolivar, Ohio, Duerr graduated from Tuscarawas Valley High School in 1996 and holds a bachelor’s degree in biochemistry from Wooster as well as a master’s degree in teaching from Averett. Following graduation from Wooster, Duerr played professionally one summer in Germany with the Schwabisch Hall Unicorns.

2012 Tiffin University Season Preview“Experience is the teacher of all things” - Julius Caesar

After enduring a hard-fought but difficult 0-11 season in 2011, Tiffin University plans to build on the prime commodity they gained last season - experience. The Dragons have 20 starters among the 40 letterwinners returning, and, with a year of experience and growth behind them, the team looks forward to an exciting 2012 season.

OFFENSE

Behind the direction of Head Coach Gary Goff, the Dragons began to implement the Air Raid offense in 2011. The Dragons completed 306 of 484 passes for 2706 yards. All three numbers were second best in school history and they ranked third in the GLIAC and 44th in the country with 246 yards per game. James Capello and Dan Pitts return after throwing for over 1100 yards each. Capello, an All-GLIAC Honorable Mention selection, completed a school record 69.2% of his passes (184-266) for 1520 yards (190 yards per game) and 12 touchdowns, despite missing nearly four games with an injury. Pitts was thrown into the fire and responding by completing 56.9% of his passes (115-202) for 1115 yards (223 YPG).

The Dragons will have a huge range of targets to throw to as five of six players who caught at least 22 passes return. The top two tar-gets are a pair of All-GLIAC Honorable Mention selections in Obadiah Dykes and Marcus Beaurem. Dykes caught 64 passes for 547 yards and five touchdowns. 2011 in ReviewDragons fall to Malone 40-34 in 2 OTA hard fought battle went against the Dragons in their season opener against Malone University, as the Pioneers avenged last year’s loss with a narrow 40-34 double overtime victory at Fawcett Stadium in Canton, Ohio.

The Dragons (0-1) held the lead at the half 17-13 and at times looked dangerous as they implemented the Air Raid offense for the first time this season, utilizing many receivers and different looks behind sophomore quarterback James Capello.

Tiffin got on the board first as Capello hit Marcus Beaurem on a 2 yard pass followed by Seth Pekoe’s PAT as TU jumped out to a 7-0 lead.

Malone answered immediately, however, returning the ensuing kickoff 90 yards for the game-tying score.

The Dragons bounced back near the end of the first quarter as Darrion Brown took a shovel pass and ran it 20 yards for an exciting score. Pekoe’s PAT made it 14-7 as the first quarter ended.

Malone kept the game tight, scoring on a one-yard run but missing the PAT as TU clung to a 14-13 lead. The Dragons made the halftime score 17-13 on Pekoe’s 30 yard field goal.

Malone took the lead for the first time early in the third quarter, banging in a five-yard run to lead 20-17, but two consecutive turnovers on special teams by the Pioneers led to 10 straight Dragons points. Pekoe drilled a 25 yard field goal to tie the score 20-20, while Capello hit Nate Scully on a 15 yard pass to put the Dragons on top 27-20 to close out the third quarter.

Sloppy play hurt both teams but proved especially costly for the Dragons. As the two teams combined for 129 penalty yards and 7 fumbles, the Dragons added on 4 interceptions, giving Malone numerous second half opportunities.

Malone tied the score midway through the fourth quarter on a three-yard run, and both teams traded possessions over the final 4:00 but could make little headway. The Dragons put together a drive with time winding down and appeared to be near field goal range when another fumble gave Malone the ball with just seconds remaining, sending the game to overtime.

Malone drew first blood in overtime, hauling in an 8-yard catch to jump ahead 34-27, but Capello led a strong charge in their turn on the field, capping the 25 yard drive with a 9 yard scamper that, coupled with Pekoe’s key PAT, send the game to a second overtime tied 34-34.

The Dragons had the ball first in the second overtime but could not move downfield, going for it on a long fourth down play that resulted in an interception. Malone then took over and put the game away on a 14 yard TD run.

Overall the Dragons outgained Malone 469-418, with 300 of those yards coming through the air. However, the Dragons defense gave up 272 yards rushing to the Pioneers and converted only 2 of 15 third down opportunities.

Capello finished 37 for 55 for 300 yards with 4 interceptions, 3 touchdowns, and 4 sacks. James Hall led the ground game with 58 yards on 13 rushes, while David McKnight also had 52 yards on 6 carries. Darrion Brown led the receivers with 70 yards on 8 catches, while Beaurem had 61 yards on 6 receptions.

Kody David had a solid game defensively, totaling 15 tackles with 10 solo stops, while Mike Virgin had 11 tackles and a forced fumble. Phil Morris and Hausaan Burton added 7 tackles apiece, while Logan Kaminski had 2 sacks in the game.

Warriors sail past Dragons 55-0 It was a rough day at the office for the Dragons, as they traveled to Detroit to take on 16th-ranked Wayne State and were hit hard in a 55-0 shutout in their 2011 GLIAC opener.

Wayne State used a stifling defense to corral the Dragons, allowing a total of just 181 yards of offense in the game. Utilizing a balanced offensive attack and following strong senior leadership, the Warriors racked up 465 offensive yards, including 285 yards on the ground. Josh Renel led the Warriors attack with 107 yards on 20 carries.

The Dragons tried to get their passing game going and started the game with their finest drive of the day, moving around 60 yards before the drive stalled deep in Wayne State territory.

Tiffin held excellent field position throughout the first quarter, which ended with Wayne State up only 7-0 after a long 53 yard touchdown pass with 1:17 left in the quarter.

Despite TU’s good field position, the Warriors’ defense did not allow a score. The two teams continued to play relatively close to each other, with Wayne State tacking on another score on a 28 yard TD pass but the game took a turn for the worse for TU late in the second quarter.

The Warriors started to wear down TU, adding two touchdowns in the final 5:00 to jump out to a 28-0 halftime lead.

Looking to turn the tide in the second half, the Dragons got off on the wrong foot as Wayne State returned the opening kickoff 87 yards to make it 35-0. The Warriors added two more scores before the end of the third quarter and another in the fourth to win the game going away.

James Capello had a solid day but could not connect on any big plays, completing 22 of 37 passes for 148 yards and only one interception. The Warriors also got to Capello for 5 sacks.

The Warriors exerted constant pressure, battering through the offensive line and holding TU to just 33 yards on the ground. TU was also held to just 4 of 14 third-down conversions. Overall Wayne State had 27 first downs to Tiffin’s 12.

Kody David once again led the Dragons with 7 tackles, while Mike Virgin and Logan Kaminski added 6 tackles apiece.

Oilers dispatch Dragons 50-27 Tiffin University got off to a great start over the first eight minutes, but the final three quarters spelled doom for TU, as Findlay (1-2, 1-1 GLIAC) wore down the Dragons (0-3, 0-2) at Donnell Stadium in Findlay.

Tiffin struck early, putting six on the board when David McKnight ran it in from 9 yards out at the 12:50 mark of the first quarter. The highlight of the fast drive was a long 54-yard pass play from James Capello to Nathan Scully that got the Dragons into the UF red zone. After holding Findlay to three-and-out, the Dragons moved downfield again, reaching as far as the Oilers 20 yard line. But Seth Pekoe’s 39 yard field goal attempt just missed wide right as the score remained 7-0.

The tide began to turn on Tiffin’s third possession as the Oilers started to get pressure on Capello, forcing him to scramble or attempt short passes for most of the game. The defense held its ground for most of the first quarter, only breaking down at the end of the quarter when Monterrae Williams blasted through for a 26 yard touchdown run, capping a three-play, 59 yard drive at 1:02 of the first.

Findlay scored twice more in the second quarer, seizing the momentum with strong play up front on both sides of the ball. Findlay hit a 47 yard touchdown pass at the 11:03 mark, then finished the half with another 74 yard drive that ended with 26 seconds left with a 4-yard pass from Clay Belton to Jaryd Brown. Score at the half was 21-7. At the half, Findlay’s Williams already had 117 yards rushing on 16 carries (7.3 per carry). Capello had 115 yards passing on 12 of 18 completions, but 54 of those came on the Dragons opening drive.

Findlay effectively put the game away with two more scores in the third quarter that put them ahead 35-7 with under 4:00 to play in the third quarter. Capello hit Obadiah Dykes on a 20 yard pass in the end zone to make the score 35-13, but a fumbled conversion attempt was returned by the Oilers’ Brian Swartz for two more points.

Tiffin had two scores in the fourth quarter. James Hall ran it in from two yards out after a 70 yard drive at 7:10 and with 10 seconds to play, Dykes caught a nice 2-yard pass in the corner of the end zone to finish the scoring.

Capello finished with 247 yards and 2 touchdowns, hitting on 28 of 40 passes with only one interception. He was sacked twice but under constant pressure all day. He also rushed for 41 yards, while David McKnight finished with 69 yards rushing on 13 carries.

Nine different Dragons caught passes, with Nate Scully getting 71 yards on 4 catches. James Hall had 51 yards, Darrion Brown 47 yards and Dykes 43 yards with 2 scores.

Mike Virgin was the leading tackler with 12, while Vincent Noble also had 11 stops. Logan Kaminski had 9 tackles up front while Phillip Morris had 8 tackles with 2 sacks. Kody David also had 7 tackles and Michael Gomez had 6 tackles with a sack.

Poor second quarter costs Dragons 48-13 As has been the case for most of the Dragons’ games this season, things started out nicely as TU took on Ferris State University in their first home game of the 2011 season.

The Dragons scored first, capping a 6-play, 86-yard drive with a nice James Capello pass to Brendton Williams in the corner of the end zone at 8:01 of the first quarter to take a 7-0 lead.

But things went downhill from there, as the Bulldogs scored 48 unanswered points, including 38 points from the second quarter on, as they streaked to a 48-13 victory. TU falls to 0-4, 0-3 in the GLIAC while the Bulldogs improve to 3-1, 2-1.

Things took an ominous turn after Ferris State’s Victor Bodrie drilled a 37 yard field goal to make it 10-7, TU at the 3:11 mark.

After holding TU and forcing a punt from the Dragons’ end zone, Ferris State’s Cody Groulx blocked punter Seth Pekoe’s kick in the end zone and fell on it to give FSU a 10-7 lead with 1:35 to play in the first. It was the first of two punt blocks in the game as the Bulldogs exerted constant pressure on special teams.

Ferris State added 21 points in the second quarter, with Tom Schneider passing for two scores and Skyler Stoker running for a 20 yard score in another. Stoker rushed for 98 yards in the game as the Bulldogs amassed 446 total yards.

The Bulldogs started the third quarter where they left off in the second, intercepting Capello and turning it into another touchdown before taking a 22 yard punt by the Dragons and driving 45 yards in 10 plays for another score. The Bulldogs exploited good field position throughout the second half to keep TU at bay.

TU finished scoring with 1:26 to play when Williams hauled in a long 45 yard pass from Capello for the score.

Overall TU was outgained 446-207, with TU totaling getting outrushed 256-32. Three turnovers also cost the Dragons, with two of those being interceptions.

Capello finished 16 for 25 for 175 yards with 2 touchdowns and 2 interceptions. He was also sacked twice.

Williams had 63 yards on 5 catches with 2 touchdowns, while Colin Boone also had 70 yards on 2 catches. Wil-liams also had 104 all-purpose yards, adding 41 yards in kick returns. James Hall had 85 all-purpose yards.

Defensively Michael Gomez had 12 tackles with 4 tackles for loss and a sack while Michael Debesay also had 10 tackles with 3 for loss. Mike Virgin had 9 tackles with a 16-yard interception return.

Also playing well on defense was Joseph Collard (9 tackles, half sack), Cortez Fleming (8 tackles), Phillip Morris (8 tackles) and Robert Merriweather (7 tackles).

It was all Grand Valley State on the road, as Tiffin University allowed 21 first quarter points en route to a 70-7 defeat at Lubbers Stadium. TU falls to 0-5, 0-4 in the GLIAC.

Tiffin’s lone score came midway through the final quarter, when Obadiah Dykes caught a 19 yard touch-down reception from backup quarterback Dan Pitts. Dykes ended up with 7 catches on the night for 61 yards, while Pitts finished completing 12 of 23 passes for 86 yards with no interceptions.

James Hall also rushed for 75 yards on 11 carries, but overall the Dragons were outrushed 229-92. The Lak-ers had little trouble moving the ball, outgaining TU 629-218 in total offense, including 400 yards through the air. They also had more than twice as many first downs as the Dragons (32-15).

Defensively Michael Gomez led the Dragons with 9 tackles while Hausaan Burton had 7 tackles. Rafael Cuellar had 6 tackles along with a 35 yard intercep-tion return. Phillip Morris added 4 tackles with a sack, while Cortez Fleming also had 4 tackles.

Dragons fal l in Home-c o m i n g g a m e 7 0 - 1 3

Tiffin University (0-6, 0-5 GLIAC) were unable to cage the Eagles of Ashland University (4-2, 4-1) at the 2011 Homecoming football game, as the Eagles scored in every quarter en route to a 70-13 victory.

Ashland wasted little time getting on the scoreboard, intercepting a pass from James Capello and returning it 25 yards for a score at the 13:51 mark of the opening quarter. Ashland added 14 points points in the first 15 minutes to lead 21-0 after one quarter.

Capello left the game after the interception due to injury, allowing Dan Pitts to lead the Dragons for the remainder of the game. Pitts led TU on its second drive 53 yards downfield, getting as far as the Ashland 37 before the drive stalled.

Ashland kept up the attack, tacking on 21 more second quarter points to put the game out of reach at halftime 42-0.

Tiffin got on the scoreboard at the 7:02 mark of the third quarter when, trailing 49-0, Pitts hit Brendton Williams on a 17 yard play in the end zone. The Dragons also closed scoring in the game, adding a touchdown at the 6:40 mark of the fourth quarter when Pitts hit Obadiah Dykes on a 40 yard scoring play.

Ashland put together a strong rushing and passing attack totaling 590 yards while TU finished with 341 yards of offense. The Eagles had 293 on the ground and 313 in the air. They also forced three TU turnovers, including 2 interceptions.

solid game with 71 yards on 4 receptions.

Williams accounted for 155 all-purpose yards, including 117 return yards. Ten different Dragons caught passes in the game.

Defensively Michael Gomez led TU with 12 tackles while Michael Debesay also had another solid game up front with 10 tackles. Ravelle Sadler had an interception along with 9 tackles, while Rafael Cuellar had a sack.

Dragons drop defensive battle 20-10

Both Tiffin University and Northwood University entered Saturday’s contest winless in the GLIAC. With the Timberwolves emphasizing almost exclusively their rushing attack and the Dragons resting their hopes on their passing game under the direction of backup Dan PItts, something had to give.

Northwood picked up the narrow 20-10 victory, negating the best defensive showing of the season by the Dragons. With the win, Northwood improves to 2-5 overall, 1-5 GLIAC while Tiffin continues the search for their first victory (0-7, 0-6).

Tiffin opened scoring at 9:45 of the first quarter when Seth Pekoe capped a 11 play, 57 yard drive with a 31 yard field goal.

Northwood answered on their next possession when Alex Faust drilled a 38 yard field goal to make it 3-3.

Northwood continued their rushing attack, with Cameron Jackson banging through the line and leading the Timberwolves on a 10 play, 80 yard drive ending in a 1-yard run at 11:50 of the second quarter to make it 10-3, NU.

Jackson racked up 213 yards rushing in the game on 34 carries, helping to move the ball for Northwood after a Pitts interception. NU moved into field goal range and Faust booted a 26 yard field goal with 8:05 left in the half to give Northwood a 13-3 halftime advantage.

Throughout the second half, Northwood continued to rush the ball, gaining yardage and eating up the clock but failing to score as the TU defense would make strong stands on their end of the field or force turnovers. TU forced 3 Northwood fumbles along with an intercep-tion to keep their hopes alive.

With 12:01 left in the game, TU struck gold, as Marcus Beaurem hauled in a 37 yard TD pass from Pitts to make it 13-10.

The defense continued to make big stands, as Carlton Watkins intercepted a Aaron Shavers pass to kill one Northwood drive, and Michael Gomez stuffed a fourth-down attempt by NU to end another threat.

Offensively, however, the Dragons could not capitalize, as Pitts was sacked 5 times in the game to go along with 3 interceptions. He did connect on 22 of 34 passes for 223 yards, but it wasn’t enough.

Tiffin tried to make one more stand with 2:34 left, but on fourth-and-one from the TU 30 yard line, Jackson broke free and put the game out of reach with a 30 yard TD run.

Northwood had 23 first downs to TU’s 14, while outgaining TU on the ground 335-18. Overall offense had NU ahead 367-241, while NU also had a strong time of possession edge of nearly 12 minutes (35:57 - 24:03).

Beaurem was the prime recipient of Pitts’ passing, hauling in 10 catches for 84 yards. Brend-ton Williams had 4 catches for 71 yards, while Obadiah Dykes had 25 yards and Bertram Marks added 24 more receiving yards.

Defensively the Dragons put up their best numbers of the season, with Collard totaling 14 tackles with a tackle for loss, a forced fumble and a recovery. Kody David had 13 tackles with 3 for loss of 16 yards, a forced fumble and recovery. Rafael Cuellar was also in double figures with 11 tackles, with a tackle for loss, a forced fumble and a recovery.

Other defensive standouts included Gomez with 8 tackles, Dewon Tufts with 8 tackles and a tackle for loss, Theron Carter with 8 tackles, and Logan Snell with 6 tackles and a tackle for loss. Jonathan Hunt also had 2 tackles for loss.

Panthers claw Dragons 62-7Tiffin University (0-8, 0-7 GLIAC) made the trip to Columbus to take on Ohio Dominican and had a rough day, falling 62-7. The Panthers improve to 4-4 overall, 3-4 GLIAC.

ODU jumped out to a 14-0 lead in the first quarter and expanded that to a 34-0 score by halftime. They used a strong rushing defense to stifle TU, holding the Dragons to -17 yards of rushing in the game. Overall TU was outgained 480-232 on offense.

The Dragons also had 5 turnovers (3 fumbles, 2 interceptions) along with allowing 7 sacks.

Dan Pitts completed 33 of 49 passes for 249 yards, while Obadiah Dykes had 13 receptions for 117 yards. His 13 catches fell one shy of tying the single game record of 14 catches accomplished twice by Dyshaun Edwards.

Brendton Williams had 3 catches for 46 yards, while James Hall had 7 catches for 37 yards and Marcus Beaurem had 6 catches for 31 yards. Beaurem also accounted for 118 all-purpose yards as he also had 87 yards in kick returns.

Defensively Theron Carter had a busy day with 18 tackles, while Michael Gomez had 8 tackles, Phillip Morris had 6 tackles, and Joseph Collard had 6 tackles.

Turnovers sink Dragons at Northern Michigan 59-3Winning on the road is always a difficult task in the GLIAC. Committing seven turnovers make it even harder.

Tiffin University (0-9, 0-8 GLIAC) found this out the hard way at Northern Michigan (4-5, 3-5), as 7 miscues led to a 59-3 defeat at the Superior Dome, ending a five-game losing streak for the Wildcats.

Tiffin had 5 interceptions and 2 fumbles leading to 17 Wildcats points. NMU turned two of the miscues into big scoring plays in the first half leading to a 35-3 halftime edge.

In the first quarter, Junior Michel picked off a Dan Pitts pass and returned it 49 yards for a touchdown. With 1:00 left in the half, Morgan Stenz halted a TU drive by scooping up a fumble on the NMU 3 yard line and returning it 97 yards for another touchdown.

Tiffin’s only points of the day came on a 33 yard Seth Pekoe field goal as time expired in the first half.

Tiffin was outgained 467-311 in total offense, including a 280-21 edge for the Wildcats on the ground.

Pitts finished completing 18 of 43 passes with 4 interceptions for 255 yards. Brendton Williams was the prime beneficiary in receiving yards, totaling 121 yards on 5 catches. Obadiah Dykes had 35 yards receiving with 3 catches, while Marcus Beaurem had 33 receiving yards and 140 all purpose yards.

Rennick Dutton led the Dragons with 10 tackles while Logan Snell and Theron Carter had 9 tackles for apiece. Dewon Tufts had 8 tackles on the line while Michael Gomez also had 6 tackles.

Dragons fall in shootout to Storm 52-42 Tiffin University’s football team broke two single game records and tied another in their GLIAC game with Lake Erie, but 34 first half points were too much to overcome, as the Dragons (0-10, 0-9) fell to the Storm (2-8, 1-8) 52-42 at Frost Kalnow Stadium.

Quarterback James Capello returned after missing nearly a month with a rib injury, and he came back in a big way, connecting on a school record 46 completions on 55 attempts for 383 yards, the fifth-highest total in school history. He also tied a school record with 5 touchdown throws, and had just one interception.

The main recipient of Capello’s passing was Obadiah Dykes, who broke another school record with 18 receptions totaling 118 yards, including a 1-yard score. Bertram Marks also had a big day with 110 yards receiving on 6 catches, while James Hall had 63 yards receiving and Marcus Beaurem had 53 yards.

With all the offensive fireworks, Dragons fans had the chance to put up some numbers and possibly grab a victory. But Lake Erie had other plans, as they scored touchdowns on five of their first six possessions to build a 34-21 halftime edge.

After Lake Erie marched downfield and scored on their opening possession, TU answered immediately as Capello, who also rushed for 49 yards in the game despite taking 4 sacks, scampered for a 22 yard touchdown to tie the score at 7-7.

Lake Erie answered with two straight touchdowns to make it 20-7 but TU answered again with 8:00 left in the half as Bertram Marks hauled in a 35 yard TD from Capello to make it 20-14.

The Dragons defense, however, could not make a stand, as the Storm put another TD on the board with 3:48 left. The Dragons climbed back to within 6 points again when Marks scored for the second time, this time on a 11 yard toss from Capello. The Storm tallied one final score with :57 seconds left to make it 34-21 at the half.

TU did outscore Lake Erie in the second half 21-18 but consistently failed to make big defensive stops to give the offense more chances to play catchup. Dykes, Brendton Williams (6 yard TD catch), and Marcus Beaurem (7 yard TD reception) all scored second-half touchdowns but TU never got closer than 10 points at any point after halftime.

Overall TU outgained the Storm 490-431, as Lake Erie had a balance of 270 yards rushing and 161 yards passing. Each team also had just one interception, while Lake Erie posted 4 sacks to Tiffin’s 1.

Marcus Beaurem had 124 all-purpose yards with 71 yards in kick returns on top of his 53 receiving yards, while Nate Scully also had 87 yards in kick returns. Overall Capello accounted for 432 yards rushing and passing.

Mike Virgin was the leading tackler with 11 including 7 solo stops, 2 deflections, and a tackle for loss. Carlton Watkins had 7 tackles while Michael Gomez and Rafael Cuellar combined on a sack. Ravelle Sadler also had an interception.

Chargers jolt Dragons 42-0 on Senior Day Tiffin University’s 2011 season came to a close on Senior Day, as the Dragons fell 42-0 to Hillsdale. The Dragons finish 0-11, 0-10 in the GLIAC, while Hillsdale improves to 8-3, 8-2 in the South Division.

Turnovers and sacks sank TU, as the Dragons committed 4 turnovers and allowed 5 sacks on quarterback James Capello. Three of the turnovers came in the first half as the Chargers jumped out to a 14-0 first quarter edge and took a 21-0 lead into halftime.

Hillsdale’s Joe Glendening rushed for 188 yards on 32 carries, as TU was outgained on the ground 335 to -14. Capello completed 27 of 38 passes for 213 yards and 2 interceptions, as he was pressured all day in the pocket.

Football FacilitiesFrost-Kalnow Stadium

Tiffin University enjoys playing its home football games at Frost-Kalnow Stadium, a recently renovated facility that seats 4,500 and is recognized as one of the premier football stadi-ums in Northwest Ohio.

The stadium is shared by Tiffin University, Columbian High School and Calvert High School, and was originally built by Franklin Roosevelt’s WPA during the 1930s. Recently millions of dollars were spent in the renovation of the existing structure and the installation of state-of-the-art artificial turf.

Paradiso FieldsThe Dragons also have a large practice facility at the Tiffin University Athletic Fields, a recently developed property close to the TU campus. The location is just 1.5 miles from the Tiffin University campus and resides on 78 acres of land that also house all of the outdoor athletics teams at TU. The Athletic Fields, which debuted in the Fall of 1997, feature a baseball field, two softball fields, two soccer fields, an outdoor track facility, and two football practice fields.

Page 40: 2012 Tiffin University Football Media Guide

Football FacilitiesHeminger Center

The latest addition to the campus, the Heminger Center, features an indoor track and field complex and a 60x50 yard turf indoor practice facility.

One major portion of the building includes an indoor track and four multi-purpose courts that will be used for basketball, volleyball, and tennis. The other large portion has artificial turf and will be used for practices by the TU football, soccer, lacrosse, baseball, and softball teams, in addition to intramurals, club sports and other recreational activities. The middle section of the

facility has coaches’ offices, locker rooms, an athletic training room, two classrooms, and a food court.

Physical Fitness CenterTU also enjoys using the Tiffin University Physical Fitness Center, yet another recently expanded facility benefiting the student-athlete on TU’s ever-growing campus. The facility, which recently doubled in size, features a cutting-edge weight center that is continually upgraded with new equipment.

Page 41: 2012 Tiffin University Football Media Guide

Share the Pride, Build on Traditionis a $12 million comprehensive campaign designed to create endowed student scholarships, construct the new recreation center, and make other campus improvements. These enhancements, coupled with recent investments in new student apartments, the Tiffi n University Nature Preserve, Paradiso Athletic Complex, and the Miami Street Improvement Project, will result in a total investmentby Tiffi n University of more than $30 million in the Tiffi n community.

Campaign ObjectivesRecreation Center$9,400,000The Recreation Center will consist of two connected buildings: a fi eld house and an indoor practice facility. The connector will include a lobby and locker room facilities.

Other Campus Development$1,600,000Over the past several decades, TU has created a campus that not only refl ects the University’s own growth and success, but also en-hances the appearance and economic well being of the City of Tiffi n. To continue pursuing the campus master plan, TU seeks $1.6 million for land acquisition, landscaping, parking and others amenities.

Endowed Student Scholarships$1,000,000Without fi nancial aid, many Tiffi n University students could not afford higher education. Since over 80 percent of TU students receive some level of aid, TU leaders seek $1 million to bolster the endowment resources of the University to create additionalstudent scholarships.
