    Spring 2012 Newsletter

Letter of Purpose for Kitchener Centres New DemocratsCameron Dearlove, President

Much of the outcome of an election cannot be controlled by us here in Kitchener Centre.

The mood of the electorate, the timing of the election, the performance of our leader, the

tactics taken by the other parties, our party platform - all of these factors are out of our

    control.

Its easy to point to Quebec as the example of change sweeping through. Its possible that

will happen in Kitchener Centre in the next election. It happened here in 1990. But thats

the exception, not the rule. In all likelihood, thats not how we will elect a New Democrat.

Instead, we need to look at the examples that surround us. While much of the election isout of our control, if we fully commit to controlling what is within our reach, we can win.

Most NDP MPs and MPPs do not randomly get swept into office or win on their first try.

Instead, they benefit from years of hard work on the ground. The goal of this

organization is to elect a New Democrat MP and MPP in Kitchener Centre. Our task then is to control the controllable.

We need to refocus what we mean when we talk about winning elections. Historical precedent tells us that we dont win in

this region. People tell us we wont win. For us to win then, we have to change their minds and build their trust and

support. We need to stop thinking about an election as an eight week period and instead see an election as years of work

building support in the community, and building the community around us. Our election is ongoing. It starts now.

Im inviting Kitchener Centres New Democrats to come together around one central plan, developed, revised and

implemented together. This will be our roadmap to victory here in Kitchener Centre. I believe that if we follow this planwe will elect a New Democrat in the coming elections.

This plan will be about winning our way. Learn from the Liberals and Conservatives, sure. Learn from them but be

ourselves. Lets build relationships and see them not as means to an end, but as the end itself. Lets recognize that this

organization isnt about an election. Its about changing our community for the better. Lets start doing that through

respect, through advocating for social justice, and by empowering people to implement change. If we do that, winning

    elections will follow.

I expect that we will come together as a riding association, bound by our commitment to our community and social justice,

void of complacency and full of determination. I feel blessed to be a part of this organization. Its not a chore, not just

another responsibility; its something I commit to through a sense of duty and service. I hope you all feel the same way.

Passion and complacency are equally able to inspire; we must choose carefully.I also expect many challenges as well as disagreements. At its core a disagreement is good it shows people care enough

to disagree. Lets recognize that our disagreements come out of our passion and treat the other with the respect that

    passion deserves.

Lets get to work not building our riding association up, but digging down deeper into the community and inviting others

to join us. Our election period starts now. Lets roll up our sleeves and get to work.

We need your help!Even with our historic 2011 elections behind us, Kitchener Centres New Democrats arent taking a break. Weve got an

exciting summer ahead with numerous community events to attend, organizing riding events, and building a plan for

success in the 2015 federal election.

Our ability to attend and organize local events relies on donations from local supporters like you. Event fees, supplies,

and promotional materials become costly when added up. We believe that to build support in Kitchener Centre, we need

to be active and visible in our community. In order to do this, we need your help! Your monthly tax-benefiting donation

of $20, $10, or even $5 will ensure that we able to reach out in our community. Start your sustaining donation now at

kitchenercentrendp.ca/donate/sustaining-federal-donation. Remember, you get back up to 75% of your donation through

    a generous tax credit.

Beyond this summer, we are looking towards the 2015 election. Despite our breakthroughs, we know that defeating

Stephen Harper and our own Conservative MP, Stephen Woodworth, will require a great amount of hard work and strong

financial resources. Facing these challenges, we are undeterred. We know that with your support, we can elect a truly

progressive NDP government. It doesnt take much, but it takes you getting involved right now.

We know that with you and the others like you who have supported us in the past, we are ready to match and beatthe

Conservatives financial resources. With your monthly donation, whether $20 or even just $5, we can do it. We are askingyou to step up and be a part of it now by starting your sustaining donation at kitchenercentrendp.ca/donate/sustaining-

    federal-donation.

With a donation of $20 a month, you will get a tax credit up to $180 after a year; for $5 a month, your tax credit is up to

$45. You want to defeat the Conservatives. We want to defeat the Conservatives. Lets make it happen.

Did you know?Due to differing rules, much of the fundraising we do is for our local federal association. This is because we are able to

accept donations directly and 100% of your donation stays right here, helping to elect a NDP MP in Kitchener Centre.

If you want to help us provinciallygreat! When you make out a cheque or do an online donation for the Ontario NDP,

make sure that you write Kitchener Centre in the memo line or comment field, so that a portion of the donation will

come back to us in Kitchener Centre in the next provincial election!

Thanks and Congratulations!A hearty Kitchener Centre NDP congratulations to our new federal leader,

and soon-to-be Canadas first NDP Prime Minister, Thomas Mulcair!

We also want to send our

    sincerest thanks to Nycole

    Turmel who did an

    admirable job as interim

leader. We even had a call

    from a local Liberal

    supporter who wanted to

send their best wishes to Nycole and let her know that they appreciated

how well she stood up to Harper. Thanks Nycole!

Parliament Hill UpdatePeter Thurley, Vice-President & 2011 Federal Candidate

Its been a very busy few months on the federal scene, particularly as we welcomed

leadership candidates to our community in the run-up to the March 24th vote. In

November 2011, Kitchener Centre received a visit from Paul Dewar, while Peggy Nash,

Brian Topp and Martin Singh visited Cambridge. In the New Year, Kitchener Centre

received further visits from Romeo Saganash, Nathan Cullen and the eventual winner

Thomas Mulcair. It was a joy to welcome each candidate to the riding, and I fully expect

that we will see Mr. Mulcair come through our area many times over the next few years.

I accompanied our Womens Rep Diane Pinkerton to an event hosted by KW Right to

Life at the University of Waterloo, on Monday, March 19th, where Stephen Woodworth

gave a talk on his anti-abortion motion. This was a particularly interesting experience, as

I had the opportunity to ask Mr. Woodworth the same question asked by a voter during

the televised debate in last Mays election. Given that Mr. Woodworth was, himself,

raising the issue, I had hoped for a clear response, but I was disappointed. After being

asked If facing a free vote on a Private Members bill in the House of Commons, would you vote to take away a womans

right to choose, yes or no?, Mr. Woodworth stammered and refused to answer, much like he did during the election. I am

disappointed to see our Member of Parliament expend so much energy on such a divisive issue when he should instead be

working hard on behalf of the people of Kitchener Centre.

With the release of the 2012 Budget, we have a real opportunity to help others see how out of touch the Harper

government is with the Canadian people. I was pleased to have written an editorial for the Waterloo Region Record,

published on April 3rd, that outlines the dangers of the cuts to OAS and to the Environmental Review Process, while

highlighting the hypocrisy of supposed austerity in the face of a rigged, sole-sourced contract for fighter jets that will cost

over $30 billion, and a crime bill that was so far out that even the most conservative state in the United States, Texas, has

rejected its tenets. If you havent already read it, please do so, and feel free to share it across your social networks, wit h

your friends and with your family. Letters to the Editor are also welcome. The link is here: therecord.com/opinion/

be sure to get back to you.

    Queens Park Update

Cameron Dearlove, President & 2011 Provincial Candidate

It has been a rocky start to this minority Liberal government. Revelations have surfacedalmost daily about the incredible lack of oversight and mismanagement at ORNGE, thenot-for-profit organization Ontario has been contracting its air ambulance services outto. We will certainly be watching for more information about who knew what and when

(for example, did Deb Matthews, the Minister of Health, know about ORNGE andchoose to ignore the catastrophe until after the election?) but one thing is certain:ORNGE has been a drain on tax money that could have been spent on providing realservices for Ontarians.

The Sunshine List has recently been released and we see with more clarity that while

most Ontarians are falling behind, a growing number of people are earning a growingportion of the pie. The top-ten list is quite extraordinary, with the head of Ontario PowerGeneration making over $1.8 million dollars. Meanwhile, use of food banks and shelterscontinues to rise. More and more we are seeing the emergence of two realities in Ontario.

The Drummond report was released which provided the province with a bankers recommendations on how to save

money. Analyzing spending is certainly a worthy exercise; however, the balance of the report is questionable when Mr.Drummond was instructed that he must not suggest raising taxes, even on the wealthiest Ontarians or on large, profitablecorporations. Instead, the vast majority of the report is an exercise in telling Ontarians that we should expect less from ourgovernment. (On one positive note, Mr. Drummond did advocate for investing in Aboriginal education. I wrote aneditorial on the topic, which you can read here: t.co/INMdwvjW).

The minority Liberal government released their first budget last weeka budget which looked very much like a majoritygovernments budget in that there was little attempt to compromise. Mr. Hudak and

the PCs immediately dismissed the budget and chose not to try to work with theLiberals. Our leader, Andrea Horwath, on the other hand, took a far moreenlightened approach. She has vowed to try to cooperate to make a budget thatactually works for Ontarians. She has invited Ontarians to get in touch atondpcaucus.com/yoursay and let her know what they think of the budget. Its agreat exercise in democracy and Andrea is again showing why it is that Ontarians

consistently rank her the most trusted leader in Ontario politics. There are many points to be concerned about with this budget, but Ive chosen to

focus on the freeze in social assistance rates. Ive written an editorial on the topic, and I invite you to take a look at th athere: kitchenerpost.ca/opinion/stop-legislating-hunger.

I think we can all agree that we need to avoid an election so soon after the last, which is why Andrea Horwath has beenpraised strongly in the media for her willingness to get work done in Queens Park. Im proud of the fight that the Ontario

NDP caucus is bringing to the Ontario legislature, and look forward to the day when a progressive voice from KitchenerCentre joins them.

In the meantime, please do get in touch! You can email us at [email protected] call us at 519-896-3575 and Iwill get back to you.

Congratulations to the newest NDP MP!Kitchener Centres New Democrats congratulate Craig Scott, the new MP for

Toronto-Danforth and the newest member of the NDP caucus! Craig is a law

professor at Osgoode Hall, Rhodes Scholar, and human rights expert, now with

some big footsteps to follow in his Toronto-Danforth riding, the former riding of

Jack Layton. He won the riding with nearly 60% of the vote. Way to go, Craig!

LGBTQ UpdateMark Andrew Alward, LGBTQ Representative

There are many reasons why I was happy to see Thomas Mulcair elected as our new

Leader, including his strong connection with Quebec and his vision of broadening

our party's base. But as the LGBTQ Representative for Kitchener Centre's New

    Democrats, I offer the following:

NDP Leader Thomas Mulcair is someone committed to equality and inclusion for

the LGBTQ community. In 2008, he stood up with gay refugee Kulenthiran

Amirthalingam of Malaysia, who feared returning to his homeland. Tom spoke out.

"I chose to believe that there are fundamental values which unite us rather than

divide us. Those values include not deporting a man to a country where he faces jail time just because of who he is."

Tom is also in full support of Bill C-279, which proposes to add gender identity and gender expression to the Canada

Human Rights Act and the Criminal Code of Canada hate crimes provisions:

"We must take advantage of the bridges we built with moderate Conservatives to ensure that this new version of the bill

will get through both houses of Parliament, even though the Conservatives have a majority. To do this, we must mobilizepublic opinion, in particular in newly-won Conservative ridings, and maintain a palpable pressure on Conservative MPs.

Canadians strongly support equal rights as stipulated in the Charter, for all demographic groups. We will base ourselves on

this social consensus to get C-279 passed again."

Tom has also spoken out against the bullying of gay teens, as well as improving funding for scientific research aiming for

the eventual elimination of HIV. He also believes that "medically necessary sex reassignment therapies should be included

in the list of medically necessary treatments under the Canada Health Act."

On the local level, I was pleased to attend the first meeting held by the Waterloo Region Rainbow Coalition regarding the

creation of a new "Rainbow Community Centre" in Waterloo Region. This will necessitate the co-ordination of several

local LGBTQ groups including tri-Pride and GLOW, and as LGBTQ Rep on the NDP Executive, it was great to hear

how the process is taking place. In the coming weeks I will continue to attend events in the LGBTQ community,

    representing our party.

    Disability UpdateAlison Rogers, Disability Representative

Implementation of accessibility training for all businesses came into effect Jan 1st, 2012. Please

feel free to email me if you would like to see government produced training documents. You can

visit mcss.gov.on.ca/en/mcss/programs/accessibility for more information on recently

    implemented accessibility legislation.

I have been selected to join a study by York University in co-operation with Rainbow Health

network. I will join an advisory committee of individuals who both identified as LGBTQ and

were in receipt of home care or have been/are providers. I have joined on a one year

commitment. They cover all transportation and accommodation costs to get to meetings twice

annually in Toronto. They also provide a $150.00 honorarium per year and cover travel costs. It is

a three year study, but you go on a year to year commitment basis. Visit yorku.ca/lgbthomefor more information.

    Womens UpdateDiane Pinkerton, Womens Representative

Wow! Its been a busy few weeks since I took on the role of Womens Representative for

Kitchener Centres New Democrats. Lots of people to meet and events to attend, and even

    more to learn!

Over the past month Ive had the opportunity to meet with Sara Casselman of the Sexual AssaultSupport Centre of Waterloo Region (SASCWR), Emily Baetz of the YWCA Kitchener Waterloo,

and Mary Zilney of Womens Crisis Services of Waterloo Region (WCSWR). Theres not enough

space here to go into detail about each organization, but suffice it to say, they are all doing very important work in our

community. A few themes ran through all the meetings:

All of the women I spoke to would like to put themselves out of their current job.

Its vital that the public be aware of and educated about the issues facing the various organizations. Major campaigns are

    planned to address these goals.

Increased public awareness and a growing community equals increased demand for services, yet our provincial andfederal governments are cutting or freezing funding.

The number of male allies who are getting directly involved in so-called womens issues is increasing all the time.YAY!!! I cant say how important I believe this to be. Theres no way societys perception of women and how were

treated can or will change without the men in our lives supporting and advocating for the changes. In my opinion, theseare not womens issues, theyre community issues. (Guys, keep June 13, 2012 open for the Walk A Mile In Her Shoes

    event.)

Theres still lots of work to be done. You can get more information about each organization and a calendar of events by

    visiting their websites: sascwr.org ywcakw.on.cawcswr.org

On March 19th Peter Thurley, Syed Ali and I attended Stephen Woodworths presentation at the University of Waterloo.

Mr. Woodworth was speaking about his Motion 312 which he is to formally present to Parliament in April. I believe the

process is that once presented there will be a debate and a decision made as to whether he gets an opportunity to presentagain on another day or to defeat the motion and therefore end further discussion. (You can see the actual motion at:

    stephenwoodworth.ca/canadas-400-year-old-definition-of-human-being/motion-312)

Is this simply a case of Mr. Woodworth having gone rogue? Or is Mr. Woodworth a sacrificial (or willing) lamb who has

taken on the task of floating a trial balloon to see how Canadians react to the question of abortion? Right now, Im taking

the wait and see approach, but will most certainly be watching to see what develops. At the risk of repeating myself, I

was happy to see a large male contingent at this event that was supporting a womans right to choose.

As I write this (March 26th) news is breaking that all six members of the Ontarios Court of Appeal ruled that two

provisions of the Criminal Code pertaining to prostitution be struck down. Specifically, the provisions relating to

operating a common bawdy house and living off the avails of prostitution were found to be unconstitutional.

As it stands, it will be legal to operate a brothel in Ontario (implementation has been delayed for 12 months) and to hire

people to support the business such as bodyguards, drivers or accountants. The court was very clear that exploitive

relationships are still illegal so pimps and traffickers still cannot legally make a living from prostitution.

While I believe this is a huge step forward for improved working conditions and safety for the women in this profession,

there are far more women in the field who are not there by choice than women who are. Until this issue is addressed and

the people who exploit it (pimps and johns) are held accountable, the women will never truly be safe.

    Labour UpdateOrville Thacker, Labour Representative

The McGuinty government delivered two budgets to the province: a lucrative one for

corporations and the financial sector, and another full of deep cuts to core services for everyone

else in the province. McGuintys stubborn refusal to increase provincial revenue through fair

taxation of banks and corporations will cost many their jobs and many more their livelihoods.

The Premier of Ontario predicts that there will be many full lawn demonstrations at Queens

Park going forward. So, lets not disappoint him. Join the Day of Action, Saturday afternoon,

April 21, 2012, 3:00-5:00 P.M., at Queens Park in Toronto. Arrange your bus transportation to
