VISIONS OF AMERICA SYMPHONY WITH PATTI AUSTIN*Keith Lockhart conductorTuesday, May 22 Friday, June 15 Friday, May 25 Saturday, June 16 Thursday, June 14 Many of the Boston Pops concerts this spring feature the “Visions of America Photo-Symphony,” a stirring, multimedia work showcasing award-winning photo-historian Joseph Sohm’s images with music by the very talented Roger Kellaway and lyrics by the legendary team of Alan and Marilyn Bergman. Sohm’s book “Visions of America,” asks “How do you photograph democracy?” and offers a sweeping portrait of American life. The Photo-Symphony combines these diverse images with a compelling musical score in a multi-media presentation featuring the voice of Clint Eastwood to create an unforgettable experience that we are proud to introduce to our audience.

*Acclaimed vocalist Patti Austin joins “America’s Orchestra” for performances on June 14, 15, and 16.

This spring, “America’s Orchestra” celebrates what unites us, the United States—the heart, imagination, and spirit of American musical traditions. Inspired by photo-historian Joseph Sohm’s striking images, this special season includes selections from his epic Visions of America book featuring all fifty states.

Broadway superstar Bernadette Peters joins Keith Lockhart and the Boston Pops to open the 2012 season. Throughout her illustrious career, Peters has dazzled audiences with her performances on stage and screen, and returns to Symphony Hall with her signature style singing selections such as Let Me Entertain You, Fever, and Some Enchanted Evening. This grand opening night also includes a complimentary pre-concert reception and post-concert CD and book signing with Ms. Peters.

The Boston Red Sox, New England Patriots, Boston Celtics, and Boston Bruins are the heart and soul of Boston’s “City of Champions.” The Boston Pops celebrate the glorious victories of these teams in concert, with a special tribute to the 100th Anniversary of Fenway Park and a salute to the region’s many Olympic winners. Each night features celebrity athletes (names to be announced soon) and great music like Take Me Out to the Ballgame, Suite from The Natural, and the Boston Baseball Cantata featuring baritone James Delmer.

George Gershwin fans will love this Boston Pops celebration! Honoring a composer whose masterpieces are vibrant, lush, jazzy and uniquely American, the Pops will perform many of Gershwin’s classic pieces, including his iconic Rhapsody in Blue, as well his songs Fred Astaire, Ginger Rogers, and Gene Kelly made famous, such as I got Rhythm, S’Wonderful, and Embraceable You. The May 12 concert at 3pm will feature a performance by the winner of the BSO Youth Concerto Competition.

One of the greatest comedic actors of our generation, Steve Martin is also a renowned author, art collector, playwright, highly-trained banjo player and songwriter! He joins the Boston Pops for his orchestral debut, and brings with him the Steep Canyon Rangers, winners of the IBMA’s Emerging Talent Award. Selections include songs from his Grammy Award-winning album The Crow, his most recent release Rare Bird Alert, and a few surprises along the way. The first half of the concert will include Copland’s Outdoor Adventure and Prairie Night and Celebration from Billy the Kid.

Platinum Award-winning vocalist and songwriter Ann Hampton Callaway joins the Boston Pops to pay tribute to one of America’s most celebrated singers, Barbra Streisand. This special evening will feature songs from Funny Girl, A Star is Born, People, The Way We Were and Higher Ground. The concert will also feature music inspired by the Big Apple with works by George Gershwin, Leonard Bernstein, and Duke Ellington, as well as a special appearance by lyricist and Streisand collaborator Alan Bergman.

Join Boston Pops Laureate Conductor John Williams as he celebrates decades of unforgettable music-making. His contributions to orchestral cinematic music are unsurpassed, and these concerts will showcase many of his favorite blockbuster film scores over the years including Star Wars, Harry Potter, Indiana Jones, and many more.
