COMMUNITY. It was a word we choose with care 10 years ago while creating our mission statement. So much of our work focuses on community; creating community, strengthening community, being a positive force in the community.

In the following pages you will learn more about the community we help to create at The Cornerstone and about the people who have benefited from our work. You will see the many ways Safe Harbors helps to strengthen and shape the community. You will meet members of our community who are our partners and advocates.

You will see how we expanded our arts reach to include an outdoor art installation and a magnificent mural which now serves as a beacon to lower Broadway.

You will learn more about how permanent, supportive housing is a real solution, creating multiple opportunities for stability and growth for our tenants.

In 2012 we challenged ourselves to move in new directions, to be bolder in the work we do, to ask ourselves tough questions about how to have a stronger impact and broader reach in the communities we have created and serve. We looked to create new opportunities for expansion and growth while focusing on working harder and smarter in all our initiatives.

The journey we started ten years ago has only just begun. While our 2012 annual report gives us an opportunity to highlight a remarkable year for our organization, it also allows us to set new benchmarks and goals for the next ten years, striving as always, to do our best work.

Thank you, for joining us in celebrating 2012, and most importantly thank you for being such an important part of our community.

Sincerely,Tricia Haggerty Wenz, Founder & Executive Director and Lisa Silverstone, Associate Director

transforming lives and building communities through housing and the arts

In the fall of 2012, the Safe Harbors Cornerstone family unexpectedly lost a very special friend, colleague and neighbor, Jake Coleman. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family, friends and everyone who knew and loved him. He will be missed and remembered always.

Our annual Neighbor of the Year award presented at the Cornerstone Tenant Gala has been dedicated to Mr. Coleman and proudly renamed the Jacob T. Coleman Cornerstone Neighbor of the Year.

The Ritz Theater family was saddened by the sudden loss of good friend and founding Board member Salvo Guttilla in March 2012. Mr. Guttilla was an incredibly talented musician who brought his zest for life, energy, enthusiasm and passion to our mission. He will be sorely missed.

My home at Safe Harbors, The Cornerstone, has been a safe and nurturing environment for me. I finally have a peaceful place where I can enjoy the camaraderie of friends and be a part of the various activities that are provided for those who live here and for others in the community. My life here is an enjoyable experience,

and I am grateful to Safe Harbors for providing an environment of stability for the residents here, and also for being a pillar of the community. My thanks to everyone at Safe Harbors for all the hard work that goes into making it an exceptional place to be. Thank You.

We love Newburgh and one of our favorite physical assets in the city is Broadway with its majestic view that leads straight to the river that flows both ways. Right on our favorite strip sits Safe Harbors of the Hudson – an anchor institution known for transforming lives and building communities through housing and the arts. It’s that emphasis on housing and the arts that makes Safe Harbors unique to our area and special in our hearts. Safe Harbors recognizes that individuals need more to feed their bodies and souls to be able to transform and take back their lives. By providing residents a safe, clean and affordable home, Safe Harbors of the Hudson creates the foundation necessary for individuals to be successful and become, once again, members of a community that is larger than the self and not alienating – a community where one focuses on each other’s strengths. Thank you, Safe Harbors, for bringing together groups and networks that would normally not be in touch with one another under one roof with the goal of building a better more colorful tomorrow.

During the six decades of our lives, we knew the era ofNewburgh’stightly-builtcommercialdistrictwherefinance and culture were the anchors. We enjoyed time spent in the various theaters and luncheonettes and met our friends over ice cream sodas or Texas Hot Wieners. We wore depressions into the busy sidewalks of Broadway and Liberty Street wandering and watching and learning about our community. Yet, when we experiencedpeopleoutsideNewburgh’ssolidmiddle-class mainstream, it was as furtive strangers when we eyed each other shyly. SafeHarborsoftheHudsonendedthat.Ahomewascreated for people we might never have known – those for whom life presented some hurdles not of their own making. They were welcomed right into our “main street”andweallwereshownawaytolearneachother’s talents. We have made friends with some Safe Harbors residents and worked with them on community projects. In the process, we have become prouder of this city’s strengths than ever.
