Elizabeth B.-N. Sanders and P.J. Stappers say “The analysis of qualitative data is always an adventure of exploration, and the analysis of qualitative data that comes from generative design research especially so” (2012). Sanders and Stappers describe the aim of analysis as ‘picking apart’ and that “searching for patterns, generalizing findings, and finding evidence to support your conclusions” are important aspects of analysis (2012). In accordance with Sanders and Stappers writing, Richard Ackoff’s DIKW scheme for describe levels of understanding is utilized regularly to understand the captured phenomenon from design research protocols.
Often, I work on analysis with all my data points displayed on a wall, properly organized and displayed in a logical order. In conjunction with ‘on the wall analysis’, as Sanders and Stappers call it, I use databases to input the quantitative information. Quantitative data points, unlike qualitative data, more often needs the rigor associated with computer analysis and graphing.

At The Ohio State University, I am primarily studying Interaction Design and Service Design. My thesis research is on the Ohio State Council of Graduate Students. I am applying a service design framework, The Experience Cycle by Shelley Evenson and Hugh Dubberly, to the organization. My research is comprised of two co-creative, generative workshops, several quantitative demographic and psychographic surveys, and a literature review. My research is triangulated through several validations including presentations to thesis committees, research participants, comparing quantitative to qualitative data, and presenting to the case study organization.

Shift is a game being produced for students of all levels at the Ohio State University. The web and mobile based application will allow students to socially engage in challenges to incrementally enhance their personal wellness. The app measures wellness across 9 different areas such as Physical Wellness, Emotional Wellness, Financial Wellness, Environmental Wellness, Aesthetic Wellness, etc.
Shift is challenge based. Not only will the system challenge users, but users can also challenge themselves and their peers. Challenges range from simple tasks like “Increase Your Physical Wellness: Visit the campus gym three times this week” to networked challenges made up of smaller challenges such as “Increase Your Physical Wellness: Loose 25 Pounds This Quarter”.
Simply put, Shift enhances student lives by asking them to compete against one another in small manageable tasks that have a large impact over time.

ID u Name Notes Technical Notes/Assumptions Estimate2 Home Page -‐ Sign-‐up As a Shift administrator, I want users to
be able to create an account in Shift so they can begin to use its features.
(Refer to v0503-‐FINAL) There would be one or more links available on the home page.
1
3 Home Page -‐ Licensed Statistics As a Shift administrator, I want the home page to include a visualization of some licensed detailed OSU statistics from within Shift.
(Refer to v0503-‐FINAL) Assume this is five quantities that are shown in a graph visualization like number of user, number of events, etc.
5
4 Home Page -‐ Login As a Shift administrator, I want the home page to provide a way for users to login to Shift provided that they already have an account.
(Refer to v0503-‐FINAL) 1
5 Home Page -‐ OSU Statistics As a Shift adminstrator, I want the home page to include a large, prominent visualization of OSU Shift statistics.
(Refer to v0503-‐FINAL) This may have to be delayed until there is enough meaningful data in Shift to display. This is included in the estimate above.
0
6 Events -‐ Search As a visitor to the Shift site, I want to be able to search Shift for events related to my search terms so I can plan my schedule.
(Refer to v0503-‐FINAL) The user should be able to enter search criteria into a search box, press enter and then be shown search results. Assumes this shows day, week, month and all (list) views. The list view would show today and future only. There would also be a way to view the user's calendar of events that have been subscribed to or RSVP'd for.
30
7 Search -‐ Display Search Terms As a user, I want the original search terms to remain in the search box and be editable on the results page after my results are returned so I can review what it is that I searched for.
(Refer to v0503-‐FINAL) 1
8 Search -‐ Paging Results As a visitor to Shift, I want to be able to page through results so that I am not overwhelmed with a very large number of results all appearing on one page.
(Refer to v0503-‐FINAL) In the calendar view, this would be accomplished by providing paging arrows so the user can navigate to the next or previous month (or week or day).
1
9 Events -‐ Search Results As a visitor to Shift, I want to be shown event information for each event matching my search including the name, day, date, time, location, associated pillars, description and number of guests attending (if applicable) on the search results page so I can decide what events I want to attend.
(Refer to v0503-‐FINAL) Events will appear in the search results even after they are full with participants. Included in "Events -‐ Search" story estimate.
0
10 Events -‐ Filter Results As a visitor to Shift, I want to be able to filter the results of my event search by pillar or student classification (undergraduate, graduate, professional, grad/prof) or organizations.
(Refer to v0503-‐FINAL) Included in "Events -‐ Search" story estimate.
0
11 Events -‐ Details As a visitor to Shift, when I click on an event in any view, I want to be shown the details of that event so I can see all the information related to events I'm interested in.
(Refer to v0503-‐FINAL -‐ Page 8 for detail fields) Estimated for modal box functionality. (Accessibility needs to be addressed.)
5
12 Events -‐ Details Views As a Shift administrator, I want the system to keep track of the number of times an event is viewed so that users can see how many other people have viewed an event that they click on.
(Refer to v0503-‐FINAL -‐ Page 8 for detail fields)
3
13 Events -‐ Toggle Views As a visitor to Shift, I want to be able to toggle the view of my search results between list view and calendar view (month, week and day) so I can easily scan the results.
(Refer to v0503-‐FINAL) The Student Life calendar would be a good template for this. List view would be the default. Results should be shown in alphabetical order by event name. Included in "Events -‐ Search" story estimate.
0
14 Events -‐ Organization Profile Picture As a representative for an organization, I want all the events created for my organization that appear in the event search results to show an organization profile picture so visitors to Shift can more easily associate the events with my organization.

During the summer of 2010, I participated on a design team’s who was asked to evaluate the Nationwide Internet Usability Team. We were asked to evaluate the group as if we had no prior knowledge of the organization, its structure, or the nature of their work.
Over the course of two months, our team had a primary research goal of identifying and visualizing the structure of the team, the organization of Nationwide and the associated partners of the Usability Team. To achieve this goal we interviewed over 50 people from various parts of the company, observed daily practices and sat in on agile production meetings. We also used secondary research to better understand their process from an agile point of view and an academic view of usability.
In the end, we produced an interactive PDF that could be emailed, used on the web, and printed if necessary. This document described, visually, the Team’s process and all members of the team by position. The document was completely circular - any one link on a page could lead you to a complimentary point in the document.
• Establish discuss guides• Schedule interviews• Moderate interviews• Observe team proceedings• Visualize findings
To the right are example pages from the final deliverable document. Due to confidentiality agreements we were asked not to provide these documents in a legible way; however, we can discuss the project and what happened.
