JUNE, 2012 PLACER COUNTY FAIR 11

When you are channel surf-ing the sports networks, have you wondered why

anyone would want to spendtheir time watching cars go incircles for hours on end?

Well NASCAR auto racing isnot a TV armchair sport for theuninitiated, so the Placer CountyFair gives you the opportunity todiscover the real excitement ofoval track racing at the All Amer-ican Speedway Saturday nightduring the fair.

See why fans are passionateabout this highly competitive

sport; why drivers trap them-selves into form-fitting seats

wearing helmets and firesuits toendure temperatures inside thecars of over 100 degrees in thesummer; why pit crews race tobe the fastest to change a tire, straighten out bent parts after acollision, and design the bestdriving machine allowed under

    strict specifications.Saturdays Open Wheel Spec-

tacular will feature Modifieds,Sprint Cars and Midgets. Specta-tors are invited to use their out-door voices, yell at the bad driv-ers on the road, and cheer forthose passing on the curves.

Starting with the anticipationfor the green flag to drop as thecars circle two-wide around theoval, through the hair-raising

near misses and paint-rubbingaction, you will discover why

fans love this sport.Racing is a family activity in

the pits and in the stands. Sobring the whole family and enjoya great evening of racing underthe lights with the sights andsounds of the track.

The $13 cost includes fairadmission, or pay $8 after enter-ing the fair.

If youve never seen anEnduro race, make sure tocatch this one, as they are

some of most entertainingraces you will see. Driversbring out beat up, banged upcars, put them on a track thathas been slathered in soapy

water and take off driving untiltheir car wont go anymore.

The only time a cautioncomes out is if theres an emer-gency situation such as a fire or

overturned car. Drivers mustmaneuver around broken carsand tires, through the muckand soapy water to be the firstto cross the finish line.

Sundays Enduro race will be200-laps with the cars going inthe wrong direction for halfof it. Drivers take a break for pitcrew adjustments after 100

laps, then back on the track

with fresh soapy water. There is always something

going on in this race, drivershitting each other, spinningout or hitting the wall. Its any-ones guess how many will fin-ish the race. For great fun on aSunday evening, take in theEnduro Race. Tickets are $13

    which includes fair admission.

Whether showing abreeding animal ora market animal,

local 4-H, FFA, and inde-pendent youngsters havespent months raising, feeding, grooming andlearning about their ani-mals and how to showthem to their best advan-tage.

The Placer County Fairoffers the opportunity toexhibit that hard work

with show competitionfor beef, swine, lambs, goats, poultry, rabbits and

cavies. In entering a proj-ect animal at the fair, jun-ior exhibitors learn valuesthat will carry themthrough life and at thesame time becomeambassadors for ourareas agriculture.

Raising a project animalrequires four main steps:

the knowledge to choosea good animal; purchas-ing the right feed and car-ing for that animal; learn-ing to show the animalcorrectly; and obtainingbuyers through a simplemarketing program.

The program alsoallows exhibitors to learnto handle finances withthe money earned fromthe sale of their projects.

Exhibits SupervisorToby Riolos family hasalways been involved as ranchers they raise

cattle. Her two older chil-dren raised hogs andsteers and used that mon-ey to purchase their ownvehicles.

Daughter Paige isstudying Ag Business andEconomics and AnimalScience at OklahomaState University with the

help of scholarships fromthe Placer Cattlewomen.

I would say that mykids involvement in 4-Hand FFA has had a monu-

mental effect on theirlives, Riolo said. Theyall have been responsiblefor the care and feeding ofall their animals; and havealso learned valuablebusiness skills keepingrecords and being incharge of all their expens-es. All four of our kidsespecially enjoyed goingto the bank and deposit-ing their checks after theycovered their expenses. Ithas been a source of prideand achievement forthem.

Daniel Campos, on theother hand, is a city boy.He discovered his love foranimals and agriculture

when he transferred toDel Oro High School andstarted hanging out withnew friends.

Last year he raised hischickens and turkeys after

taking an Ag educationclass. This year he decid-ed to go all the way toraising a steer for auction.

Daniel enjoys being acaretaker and part of the

Ag community. He says itis like a family and every-one is willing to offer help

with his endeavors. Hesays the most surprisingthing he has learned isthat although it seemedpretty daunting, raising asteer is not as hard as hethought it would be.

    Holly Hockett has spent

most of her life movingamong Navy bases withher family. She now livesin Auburn with her moth-er and discovered a pas-sion for animals and foodproduction.

She raised chickens aspets, but last year raised aturkey for the Fair. This

year she is raising twoturkeys and is planning toget a lamb. She plans toattend college and majorin Ag Communicationsand is working towards anFFA Golden State degree.

She wants to let othersknow it is worthwhile toknow where your foodcomes from and recom-mends that other kids canstart out small if they areinterested in raising ananimal.
