From early beginnings to its current standing on the map of college athletics, the Missouri Valley Conference continues to be proactive as The Valley enters its 106th season of athletic competition in 2012-13. The nation’s second-oldest NCAA Division I conference is a leader in college athletics and is one of the

nation’s most progressive conferences. In what has become a wild, unpredictable climate in collegiate athletics, the Missouri Valley Conference has remained strong and stable. Notably, 19 of the nation’s 31 Division I conferences have new membership for this season, and all but five of those conferences have undergone a transformation in membership since 2000. Notably, the Missouri Valley Conference’s current 10-member composition has remained the same since 1996 – and only two leagues (Ivy, Patriot) can match that continuity. The Valley brand remains very strong, both regionally and nationally, and the great athletic tradition of The Valley remains a compelling force in recruiting student-athletes and in marketing all the MVC programs. In track & field, the league picked up three more national championships. Southern Illinois standout Jeneva McCall earned the national championship title in the weight throw at the NCAA indoor meet, and she also took the outdoor title in the hammer throw. Illinois State’s Tim Glover was the national champion in the javelin at the outdoor meet for a second-straight year. It marks the seventh NCAA meet in a row that the MVC has earned an individual national title in track & field. The MVC has now produced 13 national champions in the sport in the past six years. During the tenure of Doug Elgin, The Valley’s ninth and longest-tenured commissioner, The Valley has been aggressive in hosting NCAA events in St. Louis. Since 1998, the MVC served as host for a staggering nine NCAA tournament events in the 13-year period, which has made St. Louis one of the most frequent stops on the NCAA Tournament trail. The Valley hosted Women’s Final Fours in 2001 and 2009, and the Men’s Final Four in 2005. The league will host an NCAA second- and third-round men’s basketball event in Kansas City in 2013 and assisted Creighton with preliminary round men’s events in both 2008 and 2012. The seeds for the creation of the conference were planted by eight administrators representing five institutions, who met at the Midland Hotel in Kansas City, Mo., on Jan. 12, 1907. The five schools which formed the Missouri Valley Intercollegiate Athletic Association were Washington University of St. Louis, and the state universities of Iowa, Kansas, Missouri and Nebraska. Two months after the initial meeting, two more schools -- Drake University and Iowa State College -- were admitted. In the fall of 1907, basketball became the first competitive sport. Today, the Missouri Valley Conference sponsors the following sports: baseball, men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s cross country and track & field (indoor and outdoor), men’s and women’s golf, men’s and women’s soccer, softball, women’s swimming and diving, men’s and women’s tennis, and women’s volleyball. This season, the league will conduct its 102nd outdoor track and field championship, its 95th tennis championship, its 59th baseball tournament, and its 75th men’s golf championship. Those programs, plus other current sponsored sports have helped solidify The Valley as one of the nation’s most respected conferences. Indeed, the inclusion of women’s programs under The Valley banner has provided a boost. The Gateway Collegiate Athletic Conference -- which began in 1982 -- merged with the Missouri Valley Conference and was unveiled as part of the new conference on July 1, 1992. And while the inclusion of women’s sports under a comprehensive athletic umbrella is a recent development in the league’s storied history, over the years, Valley student-athletes and coaches have become household names during the league’s illustrious history, both during their collegiate careers and, for some, professional careers. In fact, The Valley began honoring that tradition in the summer of 1997, when the conference began its athletics Hall of Fame. Hersey Hawkins of Bradley, Larry Bird of Indiana State, Wes Unseld of Louisville, Coach Henry Iba of Oklahoma State, Dave Stallworth of Wichita State, Ed Macauley of Saint Louis, and Oscar Robertson of Cincinnati were members of the initial induction class. Currently, nearly 80 former players, coaches and alums dot the league’s Hall of Fame. Men’s basketball, perhaps, has the league’s most storied tradition with the likes of Hall of Famers Bird and Robertson, but The Valley has also produced national-caliber student-athletes in its other sponsored sports. In 2001, Missouri State’s Jackie Stiles became the first Valley woman to earn the Honda-Broderick Cup, given to the nation’s top-female collegiate student-athlete. In the sport of track and field, Indiana State’s Holli Hyche captured seven national sprint titles in the early 1990s, Southern Illinois’ Darrin Plab won back-to-back NCAA outdoor high jump titles in 1991 and 1992, SIU’s Brittany Riley became the World record holder in the weight throw in 2007, Kylie Hutson of Indiana State swept both the indoor and outdoor pole vault titles in 2009 and in 2010. Southern Illinois’ Jeneva McCall (three NCAA individual championships) and Illinois State’s Tim Glover (back-to-back javelin championships in 2011 and 2012 are the most recent multi-year NCAA champions in the league’s highly decorated history in track & field. League members include Bradley, Creighton, Drake, Evansville, Illinois State, Indiana State, Missouri State, Northern Iowa, Southern Illinois, and Wichita State.

The Illinois State Cross Country Course at the Weibring Golf Club has been utilized as the home cross country course for the Redbirds since 2007, when head coach Jeff Bovee revived the Illinois Intercollegiate Cross Country Championships. The newly redesigned course offers a great venue for spectators and participants, as it generally runs fast.

The first 5,000-meters are exactly the same for both the men and women, with the men doing an extra 2,000-meter loop before heading down the home-stretch the last 1,000-meters.

The first 1,000-meters features a flat to slightly downhill portion of the course, allowing participants to establish a good rhythm right from the start. There is about 800-meters from the start before the first turn. After the turn, the next 1,000-meters features the steepest hill on the course, then quickly turns to a downhill through the first mile and 2,000-meter mark.

The next 2,000-meters features rolling hills that runs fast, since it is mostly run on the fairways of the golf course. This allows the participants to have good solid footing throughout. The finish provides excitement, as it is all downhill and spectators can gather along the finish chute to cheer on the participants.

Outside of the Missouri Valley Conference Championships, the Illinois State cross country teams use the course to host the Illinois Intercollegiate Championships, which serves as the team’s only home meet during the regular season.

The meet invites teams of all divisions (I, II, III, NAIA, NJCAA) across Illinois to participate. Hosting it at the golf course allows this event to be spectator friendly, something that doesn’t happen much within the sport.

The 2012 Missouri Valley Conference Cross Country Championship will be held Saturday at the Weibring Golf Course in Normal, Ill., hosted by Illinois State University. The Illinois State women and Indiana State men were voted as the pre-championship favorites in the coaches’ pre-championship poll. The Redbird women are seeking to continue their winning streak by winning back-to-back titles, which would be the seventh conference title in school history. The Sycamore men hope to make this their fourth-consecutive team win and the school's ninth overall. The women's 5k race will start at 10:30 a.m., followed by the men’s 8k race at 11:30 a.m.

After winning last year's championship and being this year's preseason favorite, the Illinois State women's cross country team is picked to win the 2012 MVC Women's Cross

Country Championship with 96 points and six first-place votes. The Redbird trio of Rachael Brewer, Elise Sigg and Kelly McShea will pace the team, as they hold three of the top-ten 5k times in the Valley. Brewer holds the second spot and Sigg has the sixth, with McShea owning the ninth slot. Finishing in second-place a year ago, Wichita State took three first-place votes, earning 86 points, and the second spot in the poll. Senior Aliphine Tuliamuk has had a dominating season, earning the top 4k, 5k and 6k times in the Valley. Tuliamuk has won all four races she has competed in this season and has been named MVC Women's Cross Country Athlete of the Week three times. Bradley and Southern Illinois tied for the No. 3 spot in the coaches poll with 75 points. The Braves had one first-place vote, as they have three athletes in the 5k top-ten. Sarah McMahon, a 2011 all-conference runner, holds Bradley's top-5k time, followed closely by Cassie Lohmeier and Emily Delvo. Their top returning conference championship finisher from a year ago, Lacey Gibson, has the fastest mark for the Salukis in the 5k distance. Teammate Sadie Darnell will be a top competitor, as she has taken the top honor in two of her races. Indiana State came in fifth with 53 points. Jessica Zangmeister will lead the Sycamores after finishing every race in the top-20 during the 2012 season. Zangmeister is coming off of a 6k performance that tied for the sixth-best performance in school history. Nicole Lucas and Hanna Mercer will also look to make an impact in this year's Championship.

UNI swiped the sixth spot in the pre-championship poll with 45 points. The senior duo of Allison Fick and Hayley Thomas will lead the Panthers on the trail. Fick owns the

tenth-best 5k time in the Valley, while Thomas earned All-Conference status last season. Drake checks in at a close No. 7, with 40 points. The Bulldogs are coming off of their last regular-season race in which almost every runner com¬peting ran a personal-best. Fifth-year senior, Kirsten Lake, has been Drake's top finisher in each race she has competed in. Missouri State earned seventh in the coaches' poll with 30 points, while Evansville and Creighton round out the final positions with 28 and 17 points, respectively. 2011 All-Conference award winner, Emily Beaver, will bring her championship experience, as well as teammate Erin Edwards. Beaver and Edwards have been the top-two finishers for the Bears in every race this season.

Kelby Jenkins of Evansville has four first-place finishes in the 2012 season, running the fifth-fastest time in the MVC during an October race. Courtney Sawle, Meghan

Barry and Emily Mauser will pace the Jays. Indiana State was picked first in the men's pre-championship poll with seven first-place votes and a total of 78 points. The Sycamores have a lot of depth in their lineup, as John Mascari, Albaro Escalera and Dustin Betz all have top-five 8k performances in the Valley (first, second and fourth, respectively). Indiana State goes into the 2012 Championship, ranked eighth in the USTFCCCA Great Lakes Region. Southern Illinois took the second spot and the remaining two first-place votes (73 points). The Salukis will look to de-throne the Sycamores with the help of Zach Dahleen, Brian Dixon and Nick Schrader, who hold times in the conference's top-ten. Dahleen and Dixon both look to earn all-conference honors for the second year in a row. In four scored meets, Southern Illinois has taken team honors in three.

Wichita State checks in at the No. 3 position with 60 points. The Shockers' took home top-team honors at the J.K. Gold Classic and Missouri State Invite, after strong

performances by Sterling Spencer, Jake Wike and Marcos Bailon. Drake sits at the fourth position, getting 67 points. The Bulldogs return 2011 Valley Athlete of the Year, Brogan Austin. Austin has the ninth-best 8k time in the Valley. Mike Rodriguez and Conor Wells will look to make an impact. UNI notched the fifth spot with a total of 47 points with Bradley behind them in sixth-place (36 points). Brett Egan holds the fastest 6k and 8k times for the Panthers and finished 12th at the 2011 MVC Championship. For the Braves, Chase Coffey sits in the top-20 of the 2012 Valley Best List and will compete with teammates Eric Delvo and Cole Dill. Illinois State earned seventh-place in the pre-championship poll with a total of 27 points. Ryan Rutherford, the top-Redbird finisher a year ago, will lead the team, as he currently holds the fifth-fastest 8k time in the Missouri Valley Conference.

Evansville was picked to take eighth with 19 points, while Creighton tallied 12 points and the ninth slot. The

Purple Aces will be under the leadership of Josh Genet and Cody Stein, who have been their top-two finishers in every race this season. Mike Hitt, Garrett Kenyon and Drew Prescott currently hold the top-times for the Jays.

PAST FIVE YEARS

MARCBURNSHEAD CROSS COUNTRY COACH3RD SEASON • LOYOLA, 1991 Marc Burns was named head coach of the Bradley University men’s and women’s cross country and women’s track and field teams July 1, 2010 and is in his third season with the Braves. Burns, who boasts a total of 16 years of experience as a Division I head coach, came to The Hilltop after spending the previous four years at Valley rival Wichita State as men’s

and women’s cross country head coach, while also serving as assistant coach for the Shockers men’s and women’s track and field teams. In his first season at Bradley (2010-11), senior Mary Goldkamp capped off her stellar career by setting five school records on the track in addition to earning all-conference honors in cross country, indoor track & field (mile) and outdoor track & field (800 & 1,500 meters). Bradley’s 2011-12 Most Outstanding Female Athlete, Goldkamp competed in the 1,500 meters in the NCAA West Regionals in Eugene, Ore., advancing to the regional finals. The 2011-12 school year, saw the reinstatement of the men’s outdoor track and field team after Bradley disbanded the team following the 1991-92 season.
