ABOUT BLOOMSBURG

Bloomsburg University, a member of Pennsylvania’s State System of Higher Education, is a four-year coeducational public university founded in 1839. Through the stages of its development from a normal school to a teachers college to a multipurpose state college and finally to a university in 1983, the institution has retained its emphasis on liberal arts and career education.

Bloomsburg is recognized as one of the best 100 public universities in the United States, and excellence, ranging from its 18 national championships to its international reputation in a number of its academic programs, is an attitude found throughout the faculty and staff.

About 90 percent of Bloomsburg’s students come from throughout Pennsylvania, creating a diverse mix of cultures and ideas. It’s a place where friendships that last a lifetime begin. And it’s a busy place — with more than 200 student organizations and activities, NCAA Division II athletic programs and a popular recreation center.

The university’s Division of Continuing and Distance Education serves students through nondegree credit courses, noncredit minicourses, off-campus classes, credit for life experience and distance learning courses on public television.

The Town of Bloomsburg, located in the Susquehanna River Valley, has a population of about 12,000 people. The central business district is just three blocks southwest of campus, and includes more than 80 retail stores, restaurants, and the Bloomsburg Fair in September. More stores, restaurants and theaters can be found along nearby Route 11 and at the Columbia Mall, northwest of town.

The university is within a one-hour drive from such cities as Hazleton, Williamsport, Wilkes-Barre and Scranton; 1.5 hours from Harrisburg; 2.5 hours from Philadelphia; 3 hours from New York City and Baltimore; and four hours from Pittsburgh and Washington, DC.

2012 Season Preview

2012 SEASON PREVIEW

The Bloomsburg University men’s soccer team put together a terrific postseason run in 2011, advancing through to the conference championship game. Returning nearly the en-tirety of its team, BU is set to use that experience to help push the Huskies over the top in its 2012 campaign.

Bloomsburg went 7-9-2 last season and entered the Penn-sylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) playoffs as the fourth seed. It upset top-seeded Lock Haven to move onto the championship game where it ran into eventual-champi-on, Millersville.

The playoff run was Bloomsburg’s second in the last three years, and the PSAC Championship game appearance was the third in school history and first since 1996.

Head coach Paul Payne returns for his 14th season in charge of the Huskies. In his 13 years at BU, Payne is the programs leader in career victories with 94. Payne also welcomes for-mer player Frank Dineen as a graduate assistant coach this season.

The Huskies are picked fifth in the 2012 PSAC Preseason poll. They welcome 24 players to the team this year, includ-ing three seniors and 17 returners. Look for a very com-petitive league in 2012, with several teams vying for one of four playoff spots.

“We need to come out from the opening whistle this year and not let the game come to us,” Payne commented on what his team needs to do to return to the PSAC title game.

“With three seniors we are not an old team, but we cer-tainly have the experience from our juniors who have been through success.”

FORWARDSSenior Bryce Shaffer has led the team in goals the past two seasons as he goes into his final year in the maroon and gold. The all-region performer scored eight goals last year, bringing his career total to 22. Shaffer is currently eighth on the all-time scoring list at BU and is one away from tying for seventh.

Shaffer’s work in the classroom also gained the Husky soc-cer program great exposure during the offseason. A first team CoSIDA Academic All-American, Shaffer was also a recipient of the PSAC Fall Top 10 award and the PSAC Men’s Soccer Champion Scholar award.

Shaffer is joined on the front line by fellow upperclassmen Fran Miller and Theo Guillory. Miller was BU’s second leading scorer last year, finding the back of the net four times. He also handed out three assists. Guillory started in 16 of his 17 games played in 2011 and will be looked to for additional leadership in the Husky attack.

Sophomore Nate Conrad should see significant playing time in 2012. Conrad started in all 17 games played last year and had a team-high four assists.

Bloomsburg welcomes a pair of newcomers who look to make an impact on the offensive side of the ball. Chris Ro-

2012 SEASON PREVIEW

ell, a sophomore transfer from Santa Barbara, and freshman Miguel Diaz each bring a special skillset to the front line and hope not to waste much time to score their first goal as Huskies.

“Our new guys came in and made our camp incredibly com-petitive, Payne said of his seven newcomers. “Looking at all 24 players, I don’t think I’ve ever had a deeper team. No one will be looked at as a reserve, which should bring out some great play from our entire team.”

MIDFIELDBloomsburg brings back a trio of junior midfielders who all saw a great deal of playing time last season. Matt Can-non, Wes Kammerer, and Bradley Pratzner each played in at least 14 games and helped solidify the transition game for the Huskies. Look for significant growth in the Husky midfield this season.

Sophomore Nick Izzo returns for his second season in ma-roon and gold. Starting in each of the Huskies 18 games in 2011, Izzo finished the year with five points including a pair of goals.

Four newcomers enter the midfield for the Huskies. Chris Pawlowski and Matt Zima have helped frame a solid re-cruiting class this season and will see time at mid. Stephen Pieri and Spencer Conrad add an offensively-minded game to the mix and will swing between midfield and forward.

DEFENSEThe back line for the Huskies is possibly their strongest as-set heading into the 2012 campaign. With five upperclass-men returning, including a pair of experienced seniors, the Huskies have the look of one of the best defensive units in the league.

This year marks the final year for senior co-captains Matt Kaupp and John Owens. Kaupp, a five-year member of the program, started in all 15 games played last season includ-ing 39 of the 44 in his career. Owens is a four-year member of the Huskies and has played in 50 career games as a de-fender.

“As great as last season played out, this is a new season and our seniors know they have to work that much harder,” Payne commented on the work ethic of his senior class. “Our seniors have been captains multiple years and have been with us through the good and bad times. Bryce, Matt, and John have been role models for everyone in the pro-

gram by working hard every day, both on and off the field.”

Accompanying the senior duo on defense will be a junior class of Michael Del Sordi, Roman Loboda, and Anthony Manero. Del Sordi played in all 18 games last season as Loboda and Manero each scored. Manero was also one of three BU players to collect two or more assists.

Freshman Mike Bamford and Tyler Smith join the Husky back line after a remarkable preseason camp. With great size and talent, Bamford and Smith bring great depth to an already impressive backfield.

GOALKEEPERAs a team, Bloomsburg led the PSAC in saves at 6.78 per game. It put together four shutouts while allowing an aver-age of 1.21 goals per game.

The Huskies return three talented junior goalkeepers. Each keeper has seen time in net over the past two seasons which will make for a challenging battle in preseason camp.

“All three keepers have been good for us and it’s a nice po-sition to be in as a coach,” Payne said. “It’s a great luxury to have a good core of college goalkeepers and it will be exciting to see when one of them separates themselves to become a true number-one.”

Bernie Roell was the main starter in 2011. An All-PSAC second team selection in 2011, Roell started 14 matches and made 104 saves, a career-best. He allowed less than a goal per game (0.88) and was responsible for all four BU shut-outs.

Ramon Lobo Jr. and Kyle Pepper also saw action last season. The duo combined to see time in four games, as all three keepers bring assets to provide BU with a solid trio in net.

OVERALLBloomsburg has put together all the pieces to make another run towards a PSAC Championship in 2012. With added postseason experience from a season ago, and the addition of some talented newcomers, BU brings a strong motiva-tion to take the final step in the 2012 campaign.

The 2012 season gets underway on Aug. 30 against Mercy College at the NYACK tournament. The home opener is set for Sept. 7 against Pitt-Johnstown which opens a stretch of five straight home games for the Huskies.

Frank Dineen begins his first season as a graduate assistant coach of the men’s soccer program at Bloomsburg University in the spring of 2012. A native of St. Simons Island, Georgia, Dineen brings a wealth of knowledge from his playing and coaching experiences.

He began his collegiate playing career at Division III Trinity University in San Antonio, Texas.
