It’s a common interaction that makes Addison County a special place to live and work. We greet each other in many differ- ent settings: as customer and retailer, client and professional, neighbor and friend. And we come to know each other. For a quarter century now we have published a Meet Your Business and Professional Community special sec- tion every spring to help our readers get to know a little bit more about the people who play such a vital role in our communities. In this 26th edi- tion of the section, we visit more than 100 businesses, solicit their stories and put names with photos. Some businesses retell their history, others highlight their current products and services. Some feature employ- ees who have hit special milestones and still others have cutting-edge of- ferings they want you to know about. In each case, the focus serves as a tribute to the hard-working employ- ees and employers who make each business the success that it is. We hope you enjoy these pages and that you take the time to reac- quaint yourself with the businesses — and the names of the employees — throughout Meet Your Business and Professional Community. Sitting on both sides of the Lemon Fair River, WhistlePig Farm was once known as the hamlet Shaksboro in Shoreham. The farm was renamed in 2006 and is being lovingly restored.  WhistlePig farm currently raises pigs, cattle, goats, sheep, and ducks. Perhaps most famously, WhistlePig Farm grows rye, barley and oats, and produces the highly-regarded WhistlePig Straight Rye Whiskey.

We Save Old Wood BoatsWood inboard and outboard boats emerged in growing numbers soon after World War I, were rapidly being replaced by fiberglass by 1960, and had lifespans of 5-10 years before major work would be required.

Snake Mountain Boatworks reverses the ravages of time and neglect. We know our way around, in, under and through old wood boats. We are known for our commitment to the highest standards of craftsmanship, for our joinery, structural and mechanical repairs, watertight hulls, and varnish that is to die for. We communicate with and involve you in the process. Your boat is returned to you when promised and without excuses.

From left to right: Brian Sheppard, Roger “RJ” Towle, Michael Claudon, John LaFountain.

New for 2012: Store your boat at our ADT-protected facility. While she is with us for the winter, we can address her issues small and large so she is ready to go in the spring.

Saving Little Chief

This 18’, 1948 Chris Craft Utility Deluxe appeared to be in fair condition when she arrived, but a closer inspection revealed major rot in most of her planking and framework. A complete mechanical, structural and cosmetic restoration ensued.

In 1930 Harry and Mildred Goodro purchased a sawmill in East Middlebury, Vt. The mill produced custom sawed Lumber primarily used for furniture; Harry began sawing 2”x2” hardwood square used for making butter tubs. In 1950 the retail building material

business was started. Harry retired in 1969 leaving the business to his son Rodney and sons-in-law Richard Perry and Wyman Thomas. In 1983 another generation of Goodro offspring, brother and sister Mark and Cindy Thomas and long time employee Dennis Charron purchased the family business. Richard Miller came on as a partner in 1985 and was so until 2009. He continues now on a part-time basis. With the semi-retiring of Rick and the untimely passing of Dennis in 2009 another chapter has been started. Long time employees Ron Warner and Tim Comes are partnering with Mark and Cindy to manage the business, ensuring that Goodro Lumber Company will continue to successfully offer great customer service, quality materials and lasting value.

Gaines Insurance Agency is a second generation family owned insurance agency. The agency is co-owned by Gary & Scott Gaines. In addition to Gary & Scott the office staff consists of customer service representative Marsha Correia of Vergennes, commercial lines assistant Gail Rathbun of Shoreham, personal lines agents Susan Ferland and Jeff Scott, both of Vergennes. Our agency is a strong supporter of our community, proven by our involvement in numerous civic groups, non-profits, and our local schools.

We offer home & auto insurance packages, a comprehensive dairy and mini farm program, small commercial insurance programs for family restaurants, apartment houses, contractors, and Bed & Breakfast risks. We’ll gladly take the time to review your current insurance needs, NOT JUST SELL YOU THE SAME COVERAGE AT A LOWER PRICE! We have over 85 years of insurance experience and we focus our efforts on reviewing your coverage needs and recommending optional coverages. Our “DO IT RIGHT THE FIRST TIME” attitude and our many years of insurance experience can really make a difference for you. Please give us a call and let us work for you.

Bruce’s Advice

Many of our customers know that we recommend the California line of paints since they’re consistently rated #1. You can’t beat

the quality and durability, and the price is reasonable. What you should also keep in mind is the importance of the right kind of exterior primer. For the very best finish you should start with one of California’s TROUBLE-SHOOTER® Primers, whether the Latex Acrylic, or Alkyd with Linseed Oil. Stop in and see me about what will work best for your project.
