Archbishop McCarthy clinched the #1 ranking and the high school baseball national championship in the final USA Today High School Baseball Super 25 published on June 30th, 2011 on the strength of back-to-back Florida Class 4A state championship wins and a 29-3 overall record.
Baseball America, Perfect Game and the National High School Baseball Coaches Association also declared the Mavericks as National Champions with #1 final rankings in their polls. Archbishop McCarthy compiled its historic season per-formance against one of the toughest regular and post season schedules in the country.
Head Coach Richard Bielski was named 2011 USA Today National Coach of the Year for leading the Mavericks to their historic triumph. Bielski’s resume now includes a rare second back-to-back championship with the same high school: Bielski led Hialeah High to Florida 6A state titles in 2001 and 2002 and now McCarthy in 2010 and 2011. In his last 5 years as a Head Coach, Bielski has lead his teams to state 5 times and brought home 4 State Championships. With the
2011 State Championship win, Bielski won his 300th game as Head Coach driving his career record to 300-99. Bielski won Florida Dairy Farmers and Diamond Baseball Coach of the Year in 2010, and Sun Sentinel Coach of the Year in successive years in 2010 and 2011.
In the state championship game featuring two starting pitchers that are sons of former major leaguers, game-winning pitcher and Senior Alexander Fernandez belted a 95-mph fastball off of Tampa Jesuit ace pitcher Junior Lance McCullers for the game-winning three-run home run and got relief help from Junior Nick Travieso and Senior Jose Brizuela, as Archbishop McCarthy defeated Tampa Jesuit 4-1 to win the state title and repeat.
The Mavericks won their last 10 straight games, and 19 of their last 20. The win marked the second straight year that McCarthy topped Jesuit (27-7) in the Florida Class 4A final at Digital Domain Park, spring training home of the New York Mets, in Port St. Lucie, Florida.
Archbishop McCarthy is now only the fourth school from Broward County to ever claim back-to-back state titles, joining storied programs Nova, Westminster Academy, and Flanagan on the exclusive list of championships in suc-cessive years.
University of Miami-bound Fernandez (.470, 4HR, 49RBI) put an exclamation point on his senior season with the momentous home run in the final. Fernandez also finished 10-0 as a starting pitcher. Florida State University-bound Brizuela (.477, 53H, 7HR, 49R, 24SB) powered the Mavericks to the state final game with a dramatic three-run, sixth inning home run in the state semi-final game against Wakulla. Brizuela, the Maverick closer (1-0, 1.58ERA, 5 saves, 37K in 17.2IP), used his 92-mph fastball and sharp curveball to record saves in the regional final, the state semifinal, and the state final games.
Seniors Garrett Kennedy (University of Miami) and Chris Thompson (Florida Gulf Coast University) are also signees at division 1 college baseball programs. Senior Ivan Santos (.441, 8-3B, 3HR, 33RBI) was a clutch per-former throughout the Mavericks run. Travieso (1-1, 1.94 ERA, 30K in 18IP) was clocked at 95-mph in the cham-pionship game. He and fellow junior Nick Basto (a Team USA 16U finalist) have been selected to play in the Under Armour All-American Game at Wrigley Field in Chicago in August 2011.
Archbishop McCarthy’s pitching dominance this season carried the team throughout its championship run. Junior ace lefty Andre Martinez (12-2, 1.50ERA, 96K in 54IP) was the leader of the staff. In the Florida Regionals and State playoffs, the Mavericks surrendered only 3 earned runs as a staff in the final 5 games. Overall, Maverick pitchers posted a team ERA of 2.08, striking out 271 batters in 197 innings.
The trend of top-level talent and performances is now an annual trend at McCarthy: in 2010, Nick Castellanos was selected by the Detroit Tigers in the first round with the 44th selection of the Major League Amateur Draft.
Bielski’s impressive assistant coaching staff includes former major leaguers Alex Fernandez and Nelson Santovenia, pitching coach expert Ric Butner and bench coach Eugenio “Cookie” Abay. Fernandez, who also serves as Director of Baseball Operations at Archbishop McCarthy, prepared the Mavericks for their repeat title run by creating arguably the toughest game schedule of any team in Florida. The 29 wins shattered last year’s record for most wins in a season in school history.

Baseball influences: “My father and Cal Ripken. I grew up in Baltimore, and my senior year at Calvert Hall, I made the state all-star team and got to meet Cal Ripken. It was a great time to be an Orioles fan.”
Favorite teacher: “Dr. James Cantrell at the University of Georgia for Calculus 3 or 4. He was very patient. I don’t know if I would have made it through college if it wasn’t for him.”
Was it tougher to win the first or second title?“Definitely the second, because everybody is gunning for you. You’re seeing everybody’s ace, and if they do beat you, they’re beating the state champion.”
On his coaching staff, which includes former major leaguers Alex Fernandez and Nelson Santovenia: “It’s just a great camaraderie. We were able to specialize in different positions

You played in two state championship victories, earned a coveted national championship and competed to very high expectations each and every night. We are very proud of our 10 seniors, 8 of whom will advance to play college baseball and have professional baseball opportunities in their futures. Your best is yet to come.

Maverick Magazine 2012 is our annual tradition of uniting Maverick Baseball and our Student-Athletes with the local business community. We thank you sincerely for your volunteer and financial support especially this year as we continue to build our program. This year your generosity has been unbelievable and all of our Coaches, Parents and Players really appreciate it.
I wish to say thank you to Fr. Dalton, Mr. Jean, Mr. Massaro, Mr. Ho and the entire Archbishop McCarthy administration, faculty and staff for all of your support for our Players and Coaches this year and for celebrating the back-to-back state and national championships with us. We are proud to be part of the best Catholic high school in America.
The Mavericks are led by the best team of coaching professionals in high school baseball in America. I want to thank Rich Bielski, our head varsity coach and USA Today Coach of the Year, Nelson Santovenia, our assistant head coach, and our assistant coaches Ric Butner, and Cookie Abay for all of your leadership with our team. We also want to thank and salute our JV Coaches Ozzie Borrell and Chris Vasquez, and our Freshman Team Coaches Steve Alfonso and his assistants Harry Stampler, Jere Nolan and Bryan Valencia…. their commitment of time and focus on our JV and Freshman players is outstanding. I also want to thank Carlos Guzman, who is our very own “Voice of the Mavericks”, for making things happen every day for our Varsity, JV and Freshmen teams. Mr. Guzman’s volunteerism to Maverick Baseball is sensational and genuinely appreciated.
Our Parents and Volunteers are a huge part of our success and we thank you for your continued investment of time and energy to the Mavericks.
