Longwood Universitybecame the 12th mem-ber of the Big SouthConference on July 1,2012. Since its foundingin 1983, the Big SouthConference hasmatured into a competi-tive leader in collegeathletics, actively pursu-ing excellence on the

field of play and in theclassroom. The League’s growing presence as an NCAA Division Iathletic conference is evident by athletic accomplishments on thenational stage, innovative marketing and media partnerships, increased television packages, and quality athletic competitionwhile intentionally fostering the academic, personal, social, athleticand leadership development of each student-athlete. This hasevolved into the Conference’s mission of “Developing LeadersThrough Athletics.” The 2012-13 academic year features the BigSouth’s largest membership (12) and sponsored sports (19) in its 29years of existence.

The Big South Conference was formed on August 21, 1983, whenCharleston Southern (then Baptist College) Athletic DirectorHoward Bagwell and Augusta President George Christenberrybegan recruiting members into the Big South, receiving initial com-mitments from Augusta, Charleston Southern, Campbell, CoastalCarolina and Winthrop. One month later, Dr. Edward M. Singletonwas selected as the League’s first Commissioner and continued tosolicit new members. His efforts led to the additions of ArmstrongState, Radford and UNC Asheville, giving the Big South more thanthe required six members to constitute an official conference. TheBig South’s first year of competition was in the Fall of 1984, and inSeptember 1986, the Big South Conference was granted full-fledgedNCAA Division I status.

In the last 15 years alone, the Big South Conference has experiencedmonumental growth and success in nearly every sport. During thistime, the Conference has had an individual National Champion sixtimes, has had more than 280 All-Americans, has reached the“Sweet 16” in men’s soccer, women’s basketball and baseball, hasreceived national Top 25 rankings in football, men’s soccer, men’sbasketball, women’s basketball, baseball, men’s outdoor track &field, and men’s golf, had an individual selected to play in the NCAASingles Championship seven times in addition to the first men’s ten-nis doubles at-large selection, had the first women’s golf programadvance to the national finals, had the No. 1 ranked men’s golfer inthe country, had the nation’s top scoring men’s basketball team fiveconsecutive years as well as the national men’s basketball scoringleader twice, received an at-large playoff berth in the FootballChampionship Subdivision in 2006, has had six NFL Draft picks, andhas had two institutions finish in the top 10 in the NCAA Men’s GolfChampionships -- including the Conference’s highest-ever team fin-ish in an NCAA event (fifth in 2007).

The Conference’s tagline, “Developing Leaders Through Athletics”was unveiled in 2008-09 in conjunction with the Conference’s 25thAnniversary. The League also honored its heritage with the Top 25“Best of the Best” moments in League history from 1983-2008, withLiberty University’s 10-year women’s basketball championship runfrom 1996-2007 being crowned the No. 1 moment in the Big South’sfirst 25 years. The Conference’s on-field accomplishments havebeen duplicated in the classroom. Annually, more than 40 percentof Conference student-athletes are named to the Big South’sPresidential Honor Roll for maintaining a cumulative 3.0 grade-pointaverage, and the League has had more than 100 Academic All-Americans in its 28 years of existence. Furthermore, the Big Southhas recorded double figure totals in NCAA Public RecognitionAwards for APR progress the last three years.

The soccer facilityfeatures a Bermuda natural grass turffield for soccer that also includes perma-nent lighting, scoreboard, and spectatorbleacher seating for approximately 350with additional seating on a grassincline as well. There is additional seat-ing on a grass incline, and a unique newpress box made from modified and recy-cled freight containers was installed inNovember 2008. The pressbox featuresall steel welded construction and win-dows with double pane insulated tem-pered glass; created from shipping con-tainers and designed with energy effi-cient and environmentally friendly con-struction in support of Longwood’s sus-tainability program. The box has arooftop platform for professional sportsvideographers.

The $5.5 million project opened duringthe spring of 2006 and includes an adja-cent synthetic turf field with permanentlighting, scoreboard, and spectatorbleacher seating for approximately 350.An identical press box was installed atthe same time.

The supporting structures for the twofields include an entrance pavilion withticket booths, restrooms, and a conces-sion area that were put in place duringthe summer of 2007, along with sepa-rate support buildings that provideteam changing/dressing rooms, a main-tenance room, and a utility room.Parking and access pathways are alsoprovided. After winning the 2011 Atlantic Soccer Conference (ASC)Tournament Championship, the Longwood University men’ssoccer team returns to action in 2012 as a new member of theBig South Conference.

“We’re looking forward to further developing Big South rival-ries,” said head coach Jon Atkinson. “We’ve always playedBig South teams, but now to actually play under a conferenceaffiliation gives the games more meaning, which will resonatethroughout the program and we’re excited about that.”

Atkinson, now in his eighth season at the helm of the Lancers, returns a small group of veteran players charged with layingthe foundation for a talented class of newcomers. The 2012lineup will include four starters and eight total upperclassmenfrom the 2011 squad that finished 11-6-3, in addition to 10incoming freshmen.

“This team will have to blend quickly in order to develop achemistry with so many new faces,” explained Atkinson.“While it’s a challenge, it’s an exciting challenge. The new-comers we have in the fold are very capable and can helptake the program forward. The success of this year will beimpingent on how humble, enthusiastic and willing everyoneis. We need to have everyone respectfully buy into our styleand I’m confident the performances and results will be posi-tive.”

Game planIn order to be successful in 2012, the young squad will need toembrace a different approach than last year, one that ensureseveryone plays his part on the field, from box to box.

“We hope to surprise some teams this year,” commentedAtkinson. “At LU we aim to do that with a good brand of soc-cer that’s both entertaining and effective. This year, we’ll con-centrate on playing a very simple, assured, connect-the-dotstype soccer, with a lot of emphasis on movement and ballretention. We’re going to be more team-oriented this year, and I think overall that will begood for us. I’m eager for thenew season to start so wecan see just how well thisteam takes shape.”

VeTeran leaDershipCoach Atkinson is countingon seniors Evan Jones, PatMcDaniel, Devin Pierce,Vinnie Llana, Mike Tegler andAdel Sarras to provide a goodexample of what Longwoodsoccer is all about for theiryounger teammates.

“The seniors provide stabilityand backbone for the pro-gram, and I think they’regoing to be ever so impor-tant to the direction of theprogram because the youngplayers can learn from theirexperience in terms of howto perform at this level,” saidAtkinson.

Despite having his share ofinjuries, Jones has always been a strong leader in the Lancers’

backfield. An extremely committed player, he is expected toplay a big part this season in how the team operates. A regu-lar in the starting lineup since his freshman year, McDanielwill also help lead the charge for Longwood once again thisseason. A talented and willing player, his stability and athleti-cism in the back will be essential in 2012. Pierce, a player thatfinds a way to work well with anyone on the field, will berelied on up top to foster the squad’s offensive attack, whileteammates Llana and Sarras will have a good chance to helpshape the team’s midfield. Finally, Tegler will add a sense ofcalm, but also speed, to the defense.

forWarDsDespite losing some of lastseason’s firepower on thefront line, veterans Pierceand Anthony Ugorji will lookto lead the Lancers’ attackin 2012. Pierce, who scoredthe game winner in 2011against Virginia Tech, fin-ished last season with fourpoints.

“Devin has a great overallability as a forward to holdplay up,” said Atkinson.“He’s good in the air, he’sgot a good finish on him,and if given half a yard, he’svery capable of scoringgoals at this level. On theother hand, Anthony is oneof the quickest college play-ers out there. He’s gotexplosion, strength and theability to get on the end ofballs, causing defenders all

sorts of problems.”

In addition to Pierce and Ugorji, incoming freshmanIkechukwu Etonyeaku is an explosive player with good talentthat is expected to provide a lot of attack prowess, especiallyin the final third.

Besides these strikers, wide flank players who can providegood width and crosses are essential to the Lancers’ gameplan. Jones, a back who could play up this season, and fresh-man Sam Yardley, a natural left-footed player, will both seetime on the left side. Sophomore Taylor Evans is also expect-ed to see minutes.

miDfielDWith an abundance of talent in the midfield, the Lancers’ ros-ter will boast several options for coach Atkinson. Returningfrom last season will be Llana and junior Brian Henry.

“Vinnie has seen a lot of minutes during his career, so weknow he has the ability to perform at this level. On the otherhand, Brian epitomizes what I mean by humility because hehas no hidden agenda and just wants to get on the field andplay. He’s a hardworking, tenacious player, and is willing to doanything for the team.”

Rookies Philip van Berkom, Rhys Cairns, Will Lambert andZach Corcoran will also be added to the mix. van Berkom hasinternational playing experience, as he represented theNetherlands at the U16 level.

Cairns, a decorated player in England, can play both sides ofthe field with tenacity and ball movement. In addition,Lambert is a hardworking athlete who can not only breakplays up on defense, but also create plays on offense. Lastly,Corcoran is a high energy, competitive player who couldmake a tremendous impact once adjusted to the collegegame.

Looking to add depth will be junior Jared Windt, who is con-tinuing to recover from an injury. Once healthy, he will see

minutes thanks to his creativi-ty, vision and ability to con-trol the flow of the game.

DefenseMcDaniel will look to lockdown the Lancers’ backfieldin 2012 with his size, speedand talent. Tegler, who’sseen a lot of time at rightback, is a great one-on-onedefender with a composedplaying style. In addition, sophomore Daena Bodie isexpected to be an importantpiece of the defense aftershowing the staff last seasonwhat he’s capable of whenhe’s healthy.

Adding depth to the defensewill be sophomores PeterSullivan and Kevin Zhu.

“Kevin did well for us lastyear,” explained Atkinson.“He’s a very humble, hard

working player, and if he continues the growth he showed inhis first year, he has the ability to see minutes on the field in avariety of positions.”

Newcomers Christian Keilty, Aidan McGovern and MichaelDurr are all important recruits for the Longwood defense.

“Christian will add a lot of speed to the defense or in a wideposition, while Aiden is a decorated player from Ireland thatwill give us some natural balance on the left side,” said

Atkinson. “Michael, whois an exciting and versa-tile prospect, has natu-ral ability and athleti-cism, and is capable ofpushing forward ifneeded.”

GoalkeeperWith Joel Helmick’sgraduation, the startinggoalkeeper position isup for grabs.Sophomore PaulHegedus is the Lancers’returning keeper, anddespite only seeingaction in three gameslast season, he turned ina very solid perform-ance this spring.Hegedus will be joinedby two newcomers in2012, Seth Erdman andCarl Carpenter, who areboth very capable of fill-ing the position. Erdmanand Carpenter bothhave a good on-fieldpresence, standing oversix feet tall.

“All three athletes bring a great skillset to the position. Paulhas a head start with a year under his belt as part of theteam, but he doesn’t have that much more on-field experi-ence than the others, so it’s anyone’s game right now,” com-mented Atkinson. “I’m looking forward to the healthy compe-tition and I’m excited to see who will justify the nod thereafter completing the preseason.”

sCheDuleThe Lancers kick off the 2012 season with three-straight BigSouth Conference matchups, beginning with a two-gameroad swing at Coastal Carolina (Aug. 24) and Presbyterian(Aug. 28) before hosting Liberty in the squad’s home openeron Saturday, Sept. 1 at the Athletics Complex in Farmville.

“The schedule has always been tough,” said Atkinson. “Thereis no easy game in Division I in general, and especially in themen’s soccer program, so we’re definitely going to be tested, but I think that’s the only way we can improve as a program.”

posTseasonWith the success of the 2011 season and the ASC title in theback of their minds, the Lancers hope to build on thoseresults as part of the Big South Conference in 2012.

“Our goal is first and foremost to get in the conference tour-nament, and from then on in, we will take every game as itcomes. Because we start with five Big South games out of ourfirst seven, we hope to set the pace for the other teams bygetting some points in the bag to solidify a conference tour-nament berth.”

Longwood Men’s Soccer

Two 2012 graduates recently became the first Lancers in men’s soccer head coach Jon Atkinson’stenure to take their careers to the professional level. In March 2012, Shane Johnson signed with theRichmond kickers of the United Soccer League (USL) Pro Division, while teammate Joel Helmick was

selected by the Colorado Rapids in the Major League Soccer (MLS) Supplemental Draft in January.

“Playing for Longwood was a great experi-ence. I was able to start nearly every game in myfour year career for the Lancers, and I have comeaccross several players at the professional level thatI saw during my time in goal for LU. The Longwoodcoaching staff not only helped make me the player Iam today, but also the person who I have become. The biggest lesson that I learned during my time atLongwood was a sense of humility. Working hardand putting in the hours both on and off the field tokeep in proper shape and form to compete withsome of the best college athletes in the nationbecame a routine we were all familiar with. I alwayshave been and always will be proud to call myself aLancer, and I hope that Longwood continues todevelop into a renowned soccer program.”

--JOEL HELMICk ’12

“I'm very grateful for what the Longwoodmen's soccer program has done for me in mydevelopment as a player and as a person. I saw theprogram grow and take great strides in the fouryears that I attended Longwood. I aspired to playat the professional level and relayed that messageto the coaching staff as I entered my freshmenyear. Coach Atkinson and Coach de Souza havebeen around professional soccer environmentsand demanded that I pushed myself everyday if Iwanted to play and succeed at the next level. Theirpassion for the game and faith in my abilities gaveme the confidence to play professionally. Myteammates played at a high level day in and dayout to help bring the best out of me, on and off thefield. I'm proud to be a Lancer and will show thatpride as I continue my professional career.”

LONGWOOD UNIVERSITY

Longwood Men’s Soccer

With a legacy of learning dating back more than 170 years,Longwood University has developed a meaningful learning envi-ronment that extends far beyond the classroom. Founded in 1839as the Farmville Female Seminary Association, the school was apioneer first in private and later in public education. The state ofVirginia acquired the school in 1884 and renamed it as the NormalSchool, the first state institution of higher learning for women inVirginia. Over the years, the school expanded its curricula and hada succession of names, becoming Longwood College in 1949 andfully coeducational in 1976. On April 24, 2002, history was againmade at Longwood when Gov. Mark Warner signed legislationthat designated Longwood as a university, effective July 1, 2002.

The legacy that began in 1839 continues today as LongwoodUniversity offers more than 100 majors, minors and concentra-

tions to more than4,800 students.Given its historicalroots, LongwoodUniversity enjoys anenviable reputationfor teacher prepara-tion. But the excel-lence has expandedthroughout the uni-versity with strongprograms in the liber-al arts and sciences, business, and profes-sional and pre-pro-fessional programs.Today the coeduca-tional, comprehen-sive state universitycomprises four sepa-rate colleges: the

Cook-Cole College ofArts and Sciences, the College of Business and Economics, theCollege of Education and Human Services and the College ofGraduate and Professional Studies. The graduate college offersprograms in education, communication sciences and disorders,English and sociology, as well as an MBA degree.

Under the leadership of Interim President Marge Connelly,Longwood is committed to developing citizen leaders and pro-vides a meaningful learning environment. Students get an excel-lent grounding in theory then translate their newly acquiredknowledge into action by doing research, internships, fieldworkand community service. Recognizing the value of experientiallearning, Longwood is one of the few universities in the countryto require all students to complete an internship or similar learn-ing experience before graduation. Additionally, Longwood wasthe first institution in Virginia to require that every freshman havea laptop computer. Technology is integrated throughout thelearning process—an essential element for preparing the leadersof tomorrow.

The Greenwood Library supports Longwood’s mission of devel-oping citizen leaders through a comprehensive array of servicesand resources. It is a learning-centered environment that fostersintellectual exchange, scholarly communication, cultural enrich-ment, lifelong information literacy and creative expression. Inaddition, the library provides more than 343,000 titles, 8,000DVDs, 5,100 CDs, 900 print journal subscriptions, and 160 elec-tronic databases with access to more than 51,000 full-text elec-tronic journals. The library also provides integrated technologyfor information retrieval from libraries throughout the world. This state-of-the-art facility is named in honor of Longwood’s22nd president, Dr. Janet Daly Greenwood who served from 1981to 1987.

Longwood provides a range of business services to the regionand state through the Longwood Small Business DevelopmentCenter, while the Longwood Center for the Visual Arts serves asan important and innovative study center and cultural resourcefor the Commonwealth of Virginia.

Longwood University also has a tremendous economic and cul-tural impact on Farmville and the surrounding communities. Astudy conducted by the Longwood Small Business DevelopmentCenter estimates that university employees, students and visitorsspent more than $90 million in 2007—with 66 percent of thatamount being spent in Farmville and the eight surrounding coun-ties.

The Longwood campus, located in the heart of historic Farmville,Va., provides excellent facilities while reflecting the charm, beau-ty and character associated with its long heritage. The campuscommunity was enhanced with the opening of Brock Commons,a beautiful pedestrian promenade that provides a central focalpoint for the Longwood campus while eliminating traffic conges-tion and safety hazards. Fountains, walkways, outdoor sculptureand beautiful landscaping contribute to Brock Commons, creat-ing a parklike atmosphere for students, faculty, staff and the pub-lic.

Longwood’s signature building, Ruffner Hall, was rededicated onApril 23, 2005, and replicates the university’s most beloved build-ing and its beautiful rotunda, dating to the 1880s, which burnedon April 24, 2001, while undergoing a $12 million renovation. Theoriginal eight paintings on the interior of the rotunda dome, cre-ated in 1905 by the Italian-born artist Eugene D. Monfalcone ofRichmond, have been returned to the dome following an exten-sive restoration that was under way prior to the fire. The historicJoan of Arc statue, known affectionately as “Joanie on theStony,” was also restored recently and returned to its place ofhonor on the main floor beneath the rotunda. The larger-than-lifesculpture is a reproduction of the famous 1870 original created byFrench sculptor Henri-Michel-Antoine Chapu. The statue was agift of the Class of 1914 and symbolizes Joan of Arc as the patronsaint of Longwood.

Ruffner Hall was reconstructed in the classic style based on theoriginal blueprints and drawings from the state archives inRichmond.

The 83,143-square-foot building houses 22 classrooms, four aca-demic departments, the offices of the Vice President forAcademic Affairs and the deans of the College of Graduate andProfessional Studies and the Cook-Cole College of Arts andSciences, named for benefactors Dr. John R. Cook (Class of 1952)and Dr. Waverly M. Cole.

Between Ruffner Hall and Blackwell Hall, a sunlit hallway formsthe Cole Gallery, which features a collection of more than 500pieces of 19th-century Bohemian glass, Meissen porcelain andEnglish pottery donated to the Longwood Center for the VisualArts by Dr. Cole. Standing guard over this rare collection of deco-rative arts, with her sword held high, is the recently renovatedequestrian statue of Joan of Arc, or “Joanie on the Pony,” byAnna Vaughn Hyatt Huntington.

Adjoining the Cole Gallery is Blackwell Hall, opened in 1920 as thecampus dining hall. This historic facility, which survived the GreatFire of 2001, was named in the mid-1970s in memory of Dr.Herbert R. Blackwell, professor of English and dean of the col-lege. Today, following a recent renovation and conversion,Blackwell Hall has a new role providing space for social, culturaland educational events for the campus and community. Alongwith Blackwell Hall, the extensive renovation included the adja-cent Virginia and Prince Edward meeting rooms.

One of the more popular buildings on campus is the two-story,60,000-square-foot Dorrill Dining Hall located on BrockCommons across from the Lankford Student Union. COMMONWEALTH OF VIRGINIA

The Commonwealth of Virginia is one of the original 13colonies. Named for the Virgin Queen, Elizabeth I ofEngland, Virginia was England’s first successful overseascolony and the site of the first permanent English settle-ment in America. West Virginia was part of Virginia until1863.

Virginia’s rich political heritage helped shape the demo-cratic principles on which the United States was founded.Virginia played an important role in the AmericanRevolution (1775-1783), and it entered the Union as the10th of the original 13 states on June 25, 1788. Duringthe American Civil War (1861-1865) the state’s capital,Richmond, was also capital of the Confederacy. The statehas long been nicknamed Old Dominion.

George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, James Madison, and James Monroe, all Virginians, were founding fathersof the United States and were among the first five U.S.presidents. Virginia is also the birthplace of U.S. presi-dents William Henry Harrison, John Tyler, Zachary Taylor, and Woodrow Wilson.

Virginia is the 35th largest state in the United States, bounded on the east by the Atlantic Ocean, on the northand east by Maryland and the District of Columbia, on thewest by West Virginia and Kentucky, and on the south byTennessee and North Carolina.

According to the 2010 national census, Virginia’s popula-tion was 8,001,024, ranking it 12th among the states.Virginia Beach (435,619) is one of the most popularresort destinations on the East Coast, as well as Virginia’slargest city. Richmond (192,913) is the state capital anda center of banking and insurance, and of both retail andwholesale trade. The Naval Base at Norfolk (229,112)and the Naval Shipyard at Portsmouth (101,377) employthousands of civilians and military personnel. Hampton(145,017) is important for its aviation activities such asLangley Air Force Base and a National Aeronautics andSpace Administration (NASA) facility. In Newport News

(178,281) is a shipyard that builds naval ships, includingaircraft carriers. Alexandria (136,974) is part of theWashington, D.C., metropolitan area. Lynchburg(67,720) is the site of light industries. Roanoke (91,552)is the largest city in western Virginia.

Civilian and military employment, mostly with the feder-al government, is an essential part of the Virginia econo-my. The Pentagon, which houses the Department ofDefense, is located in Virginia and is the leading federalemployer in the northern part of the state. There are alsoimportant military bases in Virginia, particularly the mas-sive complex of army, navy, and air force bases in thevicinity of Norfolk.

Average January temperatures range from less than 32°Fin the west to more than 42°F in southeastern Virginia.Average July temperatures range from more than 78°F inthe southeast to less than 68°F in the western moun-tains. Total precipitation ranges from about 35 to morethan 50 inches. Snowfalls are moderate, except in themountain regions.

Besides Virginia, three other states - Kentucky,Massachusetts and Pennsylvania - use the term common-wealth as part of their official names. The delegates tothe convention in Williamsburg, when the firstConstitution of Virginia was adopted on June 29, 1776,used commonwealth as the name for the new form ofgovernment. It is very likely they had in mind thePuritans’ rebellion against the Crown in England morethan 100 years earlier.

Pennsylvania and Massachusetts also chose to be calledcommonwealths after independence from Great Britain. The other 10 former colonies took the name “state,” theterm used in the Declaration of Independence. Kentuckywas once part of Virginia. When Kentuckians joined theUnion as the 15th state in 1792, it also kept the namecommonwealth.
