The University of Iowa men’s golf program is poised to make its fourth-consecutive NCAA postseason run under the direction of fi fth year head coach Mark Hankins. After a tie for 10th at the 2011 NCAA Championships, its best fi nish since 1960, the Hawk-eyes return all but three letterwinners for its 2011-12 campaign. Finishing the 2010-2011 season ranked ninth among 300 Division I programs by Golfstat.com, Iowa will rely on its wealth of experience to tackle this season’s highly-ranked schedule.“We have a top-ranked schedule with many familiar tournaments this season,” said Hankins. “We have added a couple of new events that we are excited about and look forward to preparing each and every week.”Hankins and company will call on the experience of returning seniors Chris Brant, Bar-rett Kelpin, Jed Dirksen and Brad George, all of whom contributed to last year’s record-setting season.Brant ended the 2010-11 season with the second-lowest season scoring average in Iowa history (72.42) and fi nished inside the top-20 in every stroke-play event. He also led the Hawkeyes at the Big Ten Championships with a runner-up fi nish. The Edwards-ville, Ill., native, is a 2011 honorable mention GCAA Academic All-American and three-time academic all-Big Ten honoree. “Chris had a great season last year highlighted by his steady play down the stretch in the Big Tens, NCAA Regionals and 20th place fi nish at the NCAA Championships,” Hankins said. “He continues to improve and will be a leader on this year’s squad.”Kelpin spent a majority of last season in Iowa’s number four. Not only did the three-year letterwinner compile six top-20 fi nishes, he led the Hawkeyes in match-play competition with a season individual record of 5-2.“Barrett is coming off an inconsistent junior season but showed signs of greatness in the spring when he led the team in scoring average and fi nished runner-up at the 2010 Big Ten Championships,” said Hankins. “He played well over the summer and continues to grow in his confi dence and experience”George and Dirksen split time as the fi ve man. George is a three-year letterwinner, while Dirksen earned his fi rst Hawkeye letter after transferring to Iowa in the fall of 2010. George helped the Hawkeyes to a third place fi nish at the 2011 Big Ten Championships before Dirksen took over the position during Iowa’s NCAA run. With two starters depart-ing from last season, both players will be counted on to provide experienced leadership and competitiveness from week-to-week.“I don’t care what position any of our returners played last year,” said Hankins. “All of these guys want to be the No. 1 man and if they don’t, then they are on the wrong team. We have plenty of capable players that just need a spot to shine.”Rounding out Iowa’s senior class is Jared Walahoski. The Urbandale, Iowa, native has competed in several events as an individual in his career, but will be a viable contender for Iowa’s top-fi ve this season. Additionally, sophomore Ryan Marks and freshman Ian Vandersee will be ready for action after taking redshirts last year.Hankins also welcomes three new faces to the program in freshmen Brian Bullington (Frankfort, Ill.) and Joseph Winslow (Overland Park, Kan.) and sophomore Steven Ihm (Dubuque, Iowa). Bullington and Winslow are both prep standouts with successful junior amateur resumes, while Ihm transferred to Iowa after leading Indian Hills Com-munity College to the 2011 NJCAA National Championship as a freshman.“All three of our new guys have substantial national junior tournament experience and success,” said Hankins. “They have work ethic, discipline and the determination to be the best. All three expect to be in the lineup when we travel to Minnesota in September. We are proud to add these young men to our Hawkeye golf team and look forward to their impact.”The Hawkeyes open the fall schedule Sept. 11-12 with a trip to Wayzata, Minn., for the Golden Gopher Invitational. Marking their fourth-consecutive trip to the tournament, Iowa is looking for its fi rst top-three team fi nish after holding down fourth, fi fth and sixth places in the last three years.“Spring Hill is a great golf course that is extremely well manicured,” said Hankins. “The Gopher Invite features many top teams, and we enjoy driving to our fi rst tournament of the year.”The Hawkeyes return home to host the third-annual Golfweek Conference Challenge on Sept. 25-27. Hosted at Spirit Hollow in Burlington, Iowa, for the second-straight year, the Conference Challenge pits 15 different Division I programs representing 15 different

athletic conferences. The Hawkeyes took home second place in 2009, but will look to defend their dominating 15-stroke win from 2010.“The Golfweek will be one of the top ranked fi elds in collegiate golf this year,” said Hankins. “Spirit Hollow, Golfweek and the University of Iowa are proud to have created such a great event, which allows us to showcase our talented Hawkeye golfers in front of a home crowd.”The month of October begins with a trip to Durham, N.C., for the Duke-hosted Rod My-ers Invitational on Oct. 1-2. The Hawkeyes won the 2010 Rod Myers Invitational during a spree of four-consecutive tournament titles in four outings last season.New to the schedule will be the U.S. Collegiate Championship on Oct. 23-25. In what should be another tough test on their fall schedule, the Hawkeyes will spend three days in Atlanta, Ga., competing against some of the nation’s top programs.“This is our fi rst year at the U.S. Collegiate, which is hosted at the Golf Club of Georgia,” Hankins said. “This is a great venue with some of the stronger ACC and SEC teams involved. Our experience last year, spending a week on spring break in the Atlanta area, will help us adapt quickly to this familiar terrain.”The Hawkeyes will close the fall season with their third-consecutive trip to the Baylor In-tercollegiate in Dallas, Texas. After a third place fi nish in 2009 and a fi rst place fi nish in 2010, Iowa will look to continue its success at the two-day event running Oct. 31-Nov. 1.“With four out of fi ve fall tournament being return visits by our team, I am sure that we can prepare properly and hope to capitalize on a challenging but familiar schedule,” said Hankins. After the Big Four Match-Play Challenge (exhibition) in Phoenix, Ariz., on Feb. 4, Iowa will return to its competitive spring schedule Feb. 10-11 at the Big Ten Match-Play. In its fourth year, the conference match-play will be played in Sarasota, Fla. and once again televised on the Big Ten Network throughout the spring. The Hawkeyes return to Sarasota again on March 18-20 for the Callaway Collegiate Match-Play at The Concession Golf Club. Marking their third trip to this elite event, the Hawkeyes have compiled a match-play record of 6-2 and look to make another run at some of the nation’s top-tier programs.“Our match-play experience and success has paid off over the past few years with wins over many top 25 teams,” said Hankins. “We compete well head-to-head with anyone and continue to learn and grow in this format. We always look forward to the Callaway Match-Play, and this year is no exception.” Iowa then travels to the LSU National Invitational on March 31-April 1, before returning to Iowa City for its second of two home stands this season. The Hawkeye - TaylorMade Invitational is in its 19th year at Finkbine Golf Course and has been dominated by the Black and Gold. Including its victories in 2010 and 2011, Iowa has won 12 Hawkeye Invitational team titles and crowned as many individual medalists. The 2012 Hawkeye - TaylorMade Invitational will be held April 14-15.Iowa’s fi nal tune-up before postseason play will be at the Boilermaker Invitational in West Lafayette, Ind., on April 21-22. After a year-long hiatus from the event, the Hawk-eyes return to the Pete Dye designed Kampen Course, looking to close their regular season with a strong performance. The 2012 Big Ten Championships will be held at French Lick Resort in French Lick, Ind. The 2012 season marks the fi rst time that the Big Ten Championships will host both men and women’s tournaments at the same time and on a neutral site. “The Big Ten coaches have discussed a neutral site for years to try and secure a top notch facility, create an equitable playing fi eld for all 12 teams and make sure that we are creating a special experience for all of our Big Ten golfers at this important event,” said Hankins. “The Pete Dye Course at French Lick is highly regarded, and we are looking forward to the experience.”With talent up and down the roster and plenty of experience to go along, Hankins and the Iowa men’s golf program have put themselves atop the national stage. A demand-ing schedule waits, insuring that success in these tournaments would bolster rankings, accolades and another trip to postseason play.“We are relatively inexperienced and have an entirely new look on this year’s team,” Hankins said. “If we are going to be successful, each of my guys has to forget about team and especially last year’s team and work to be his individual best. That is what has carried us over the past few years and nothing has changed this season.”

The Hawkeyes’ climb in national rankings began in 2009 under Hankins. Furthermore, Hankins coached the Black and Gold to a fi fth place fi nish at the 2009 Southeast Regionals and a 17th place fi nish at the NCAA Championships in Toledo, OH; marking the fi rst time the Hawkeyes have qualifi ed for the championships since 1995.

He earned a bachelor’s degree in psychology in 1993 and an MBA in 1997 from Iowa State.

In addition to collegiate competition, Hankins has played on the Nike Tour, Golden State Tour, Tommy Armour Tour and participated in PGA Tour Qualifying.

Hankins said his expectations for the student-athletes who will compete for the UI under his direction will be to attain success both on the golf course and in the classroom.

“It’s my responsibility to provide the platform for every member of our men’s golf program to succeed athletically and academically. I want them to have a fi rst-class experience and to graduate with a sense of pride about themselves and our university,” he said.

Hankins is a native of Mt. Pleasant, Iowa.

“I am extremely excited by the support and enthusiasm the administra-tion, alumni, and friends of the golf program have shown throughout my fi rst four years at Iowa. The E.J. Liechty Scholarship, for men’s intercollegiate athletics, was established in 1995 by Ailene Liechty in memory of her husband, E.J. “Jack” Liechty. Since 1997, the annual scholarship has been awarded to a deserving student-athlete who is a member of the Iowa golf team. Jack Liechty was a devoted supporter of the University of Iowa, especially in the areas of athletics and arts. He was known for his humor and his willingness to lend a helping hand. Jack was a newspaperman all his life, entering the business in 1930 as the Iowa City circulation manager for the Des Moines Register. He joined the Iowa City Press-Citizen in 1934 as circulation manager, and went on to become president

and publisher from 1962-1966. He was named president of Speidel Newspapers, Inc., the parent company of the Press-Citizen, in 1966. Jack retired in 1972, although he continued to serve on the executive committee until 1977, when Speidel merged with Gannett Co., Inc., the nation’s largest newspaper company. Over the years, Jack contributed to many projects across the University of Iowa campus, and in 1983 he received the Distinguished Friend Award from the UI Alumni Association. Jack died in 1994 at the age of 85. His son, John Liechty, was a second team All-American in 1958 and three-time golf letter winner for head coaches Bucky O’Connor and Chuck Zwiener. Chuck Zwiener Endowed Scholarship

Chuck Zwiener served as men’s golf coach at the University of Iowa from 1958 through 1989, coaching the Hawkeyes for 32 years. In his honor, family and friends established the Chuck Zwiener Scholarship in 1992, to be awarded each year to an outstanding member of the Iowa golf team. Upon taking over the Iowa program in 1958, Zwiener immediately led his fi rst three Hawkeye teams into NCAA postseason action. During his tenure, Zwiener placed six players on the PGA tour, one of which went on to become a two-time PGA club winner of the year. Sixteen of Zwiener’s former players are now head PGA professionals at some of the fi nest golf courses in

the state of Iowa. He also led the Hawkeyes to 10 fi rst division fi nishes in the Big Ten and eight Hawkeyes earned All-Big Ten honors. For further information, or to make a gift to the Zwiener Scholarship Fund, contact the UI Foundation, 500 Alumni Center, Iowa City, IA 52242.

Bucky O’Connor Endowed Scholarship

The Bucky O’Connor Endowed Scholarship fund now endows both a basketball and golf scholarship at the University of Iowa. Since 1994, the scholarship provides a full ride, tuition, room, board and books for a member of the Iowa golf team. O’Connor coached the Iowa golf team from 1949-56, and had a dual meet record of 39-30-4. His 1954 team placed second in the Big Ten tournament, and 11th in the NCAA meet. Also serving as Iowa’s basketball coach from 1951-58, O’Connor directed his teams to a 108-54 record, including two Big Ten championships and two NCAA Final Four appearances. O’Connor joined the Hawkeye staff in 1948 and coached the Hawkeyes until he was killed in an automobile accident in April, 1958.

James Hoak Men’s Golf Scholarship Fund

The James M. Hoak Scholarship is designated for deserving student-athletes on the UI men’s golf team. Hoak is a 1940 graduate from the University of Iowa, former Des Moines businessman and currently resides in North Palm Beach, FL. Long-time friend, Clark A. Johnson and Hoak’s three sons, David A. Hoak (a 1968 UI business graduate), Jon S. Hoak and James M. Hoak Jr. made gift commitments to the UI Foundation to establish an endowed athletics scholarship fund in Hoak’s name. While at Iowa, James M. Hoak lettered in golf and roomed with UI football legend Nile Kinnick. Hoak attended the M.B.A. program at Harvard University in the early 1940’s and after service in the Navy during World War II, joined the family

business, the Wheeler Lumber Company, headquartered in Des Moines. He served as the fi rm’s president for more than 20 years before retiring in 1985. Hoak and his wife, Jane, a 1941 UI graduate, have been UI supporters and volunteers for many years, and are members of the Presidents Club, which recognizes the UI’s most generous contributors. “Jim graduated from the university nearly 68 years ago, and I left campus in 1953, but neither of us has ever lost his enthusiasm for the university, and for its mission of equipping students with the tools to succeed in life after college,” said Johnson. “Jim’s been so important to the university over the years, and I wanted to do something to honor his love for the U of I while he and his family could enjoy and participate in that recognition.” “The James Hoak Scholarship represents a real win-win for the UI athletics program,” UI Athletics Director Gary Barta said. “The student-athletes who earn the Hoak Scholarship will have the distinction of knowing that their awards carry the name of one of our most loyal and generous graduates -- someone who knew Nile personally, and who represents the proud history and integrity of the UI athletics program.”

WHY IOWA?

IOWA MEN’S GOLF

“We have a great home golf course in Finkbine that can chal-lenge us every day. Iowa is also a top school academically

which will help us after college. The people at Iowa and con-nections that you can make while here will last a lifetime.”

Dan Holterhaus - 2008 Iowa Alum

Professional Golfer - Cedar Rapids, IA

“I am very encouraged to hear about the work Mark Hankins is doing at the University of Iowa. He is very excited and interest-ed in making the Iowa golf program the best it can be. He was able to bring Big Ten titles to Michigan State and I am confi dent

he can do the same for Iowa.”

Lonnie Nielson - 1978 Iowa Alum

PGA and Champions Tour

“The best thing I ever did was choose to attend the University of Iowa. We had a great golf program and traveled all over

the country. The University of Iowa is a great school and Iowa City is a great college town. Overall, it is a great place to go to

school.”

Sean McCarty - 1995 Iowa Alum and 1995 all-American

Director of Golf - Brown Deer Golf Club

“I think Coach Hankins has a core group of kids who are really trying to accomplish something with their golf games. He won’t accept any mediocrity and he’s really after a national champion-ship. It would be incredible to do that in the Midwest and I think

that’s really his ultimate goal; he wants to be the best in the country.”

Gary Updedgraff -- 1978 Iowa Alum

“It’s a great time to be a Hawkeye golfer. The recruiting has really picked up and these guys can play. We’re starting to get

guys from all over the place and Mark (Hankins) has done a phenomenal job. There are great facilities for a great program

and these guys are ready to go.”

Jason Price -- 1995-2000

“The years I was here were great. You get to travel all over the country and I still have life-long friends I still keep in touch with

today, not only from Iowa but from other schools. It really paves the way, not only for golf but for business opportunities. It

teaches you how to deal with other people and all sorts of differ-ent lifestyles. It really carries over to all different walks of life.”

Bo Anderson --1999-2003

“I’ve been in the golf business for almost 30 years now, as a head professional and director of golf in the Des Moines metro area and I’d have to say that the recognition of being an Iowa

alum and on the golf team was such a positive infl uence in all of that. You meet people and make connections which are always

positive as well.”

Ross E. deBuhr -- 1977 Iowa Alum

“Being a member of the Iowa golf team, competing in the Big Ten and graduating from the University of Iowa has been abso-lutely critical to my success at all levels. It has been absolutely key in my development of a successful law practice. Friends

and acquaintances that I developed at the U of I have followed me throughout my entire professional career.”

the Greater Vancouver Open Championship. Boros has recorded two top-25 fi nishes since 2009, bringing his career PGA earnings above $1.6 million. Jack continued his strong play into the next two years as he won titles at the Iowa Masters in 1960 and the Northwest Ama-teur in 1961. In his career, Jack won a total of fi ve Iowa Major Titles. A highlight of Jack Rule’s career was at the 1956 U.S. Junior Amateur Championship, where Rule ran into a a guy named Jack Nicklaus in the semifi nals. Rule was able to pull out the victory 1 up. He eventually lost in the fi nals but very few individuals can say that they toppled the “Bear”. Besides a successful run at the Amateur level Jack tried his luck as a professional. Jack is one of four Iowans to have won on the PGA Tour including Jack Fleck, Zack Johnson, and Steve Spray. His victories include the 1963 St. Paul Open and the 1965 Oklahoma City Open. His best fi nish in a Major Championship was at the 1964 PGA Championship where he fi nished T-39. Jack also went back to Water-loo to win the Waterloo Open as a Professional in 1969 & 1974. He is now a very successful fi nancial consultant in Denver, CO.

- Brad Klapprott - Klapprott won the Big Ten title in 1992, becoming the second Hawkeye to ever do so. He played in a com-bined 51 Nationwide Tour Tournaments from 2000 to 2006, placing in the top 25 seven times including two top ten fi nishes. He tied for fi fth at the 2006 Rex Hospital Open after carding all four rounds in the 60’s. Klapprott played at the US Open Champion-ship in 2001, the same year that he posted his high-

est Nationwide fi nish (T3 at the Buy.com Hershey Open). In May 2009, Klapprott fi red a 13-under-par 59 in a mini-tour golf tournament at Black Bear Golf Club in Eustis, Fla., matching a feat that had only been ac-complished three times on the PGA Tour. Klapprott currently lives with his wife and kids in Lakeland, Fla., and competes in mini- tour events.

- John Jacobs - In 1939, John Jacobs began his illustrious amateur career by winning the Iowa Amateur just out of high school at only the age of 18. This would be the fi rst of an amazing six titles at the Iowa Amateur. Jacobs won the next two Iowa Amateurs in 1940 and 1941 before the war in-terrupted his run. After his return Jacobs enrolled at Iowa and picked up right where he left off, winning the Big Ten Championship in 1946, the fi rst Hawkeye to ever do so. That same summer Jacobs added his fourth State Amateur title. John added his last two State Amateur titles in 1948 and 1950. Besides his success in the State Amateur, Ja-cobs won four Northwest Amateur titles, and three Waterloo Open titles. Overall, Jacobs won 13 Iowa Major Titles.

- Gene Elliott - Elliott was a four-year letterman at Iowa from 1981 to 1984 and was team captain his senior year. He turned pro after graduating from Iowa and began to work with David Leadbetter. He went on to play profes-sional golf for fi ve years. His highest fi nish on the PGA Tour was sev-enth at the FedEx St. Jude Classic in 1986. Elliott now owns his own business in West Des Moines, Iowa, and continues to play in amateur events.

- John Liechty - John Liechty of Marshalltown compiled an impressive list of accom-plishments as an amateur player in Iowa. After a 1955 Iowa Junior Amateur victory, Liechty played his collegiate golf at the University of Iowa and was a three-time letter winner from 1957-59. In 1958, John was a second team All-American. After his college career, Liechty con-tinued his strong play becoming the Iowa Amateur of the Year in 1960.

Over the next several years, Liechty won a total of 10 of Iowa’s desig-nated major championships. His victories included the Iowa Amateur (1964 & 1971), the Northwest Amateur (1960), the Central States Ama-teur (1960 & 1961), the Herman Sani Invitational (1964 & 1968), the Iowa Masters (1972 & 1973) and the Fort Dodge Amateur in 1966.

Liechty experienced success on the national level as well, winning the prestigious Broadmoor Invitational in 1963 and qualifi ed for the 1960 & 1963 U.S. Amateurs. Liechty currently resides in Leawood, KS.

Sept. 2, 2011

“It’s a great experience for us. Mark Hankins has this program going in the

right direction. Being able to be among friends and play some golf is invalu-

able to the guys who have graduated and are trying to remember what it was

like when we played.”

Jason Price – 2000 Iowa Alum

“It’s great for any program that can get something like this going. I think

there’s a lot of guys that wouldn’t think twice about coming back next year.

They’ll want to come back to see all their old teammates, play a great golf

course and see a good football game. It’s a pretty good draw for former alums

to get back here.”

Adam Kaufman - Finkbine Assistant Golf Pro

“This event is awesome because it gets harder and harder to get together the

older you get. This event makes it easy to come back as a group. You really

are a family, so hats off to Mark and everything he’s done.”

Bo Anderson – 2003 Iowa Alum

“It’s a pretty neat deal they’re putting together for us. Something like this is

a great way to get together with all the other guys we used to play with and

HAWKEYE ADMINISTRATION

IOWA MEN’S GOLFGary BartaDirector of AthleticsGary Barta is in his sixth year as director of athlet-ics at the University of Iowa – and his 25th year in athletics administration – riding a wave of momen-tum. Cause for that energy is the fact the Hawkeyes enjoyed record-setting performances in the class-room and on the playing fi eld, the completion of the second-largest construction project in the history of intercollegiate athletics at the UI, and the breaking of ground on a new indoor practice facility for the Hawkeye football program. With respect to the UI academic momentum, Barta expects the graduation rates for student-athletes

made public this fall to be among the highest ever achieved at the UI. Those numbers are also expected to compare favorably with the UI’s Big Ten Conference and national peers in the high profi le sports of football, and men’s and women’s basketball. In May, the NCAA confi rmed that all 24 of Iowa’s teams exceeded the Academic Prog-ress Rate (APR) benchmark for the third straight year and honored a school-record four UI teams – men’s cross country, softball, men’s tennis and women’s tennis – that ranked in the top 10 percent of their sport, based on their most-recent multi-year APR. Competitively, the UI set a school record with 510 points scored in the 2011 Learfi eld Directors’ Cup. This success was driven in great measure by another successful season for the UI football team – which won a record third straight bowl game, 27-24, over Missouri in the Insight Bowl; a third-place fi nish at the NCAA championships by Iowa’s wrestling program; a fourth straight appearance in the NCAA postseason by the women’s basketball program; strong performances by the UI’s men’s and women’s track and fi eld teams; and a school-record 10th place fi nish by the UI men’s golf team. The highlight of the UI’s year in Big Ten Conference competition was the fi rst league title in men’s track and fi eld in 44 years. Larry Wieczorek’s squad climbed to the top of the podium by dominating the fi nal day of competition on the UI’s Cretzmeyer Track. An All-American distance runner as a student-athlete at the UI, Wieczorek was named the Big Ten Track and Field Coach of the Year in recognition of his team’s performance and for qualifying no fewer than 33 male and female student-athletes for postseason competition. In addition to the competitive success the Hawkeyes recorded in 2010-11, the UI also ex-perienced tremendous success at the turnstiles. Iowa entered the 2010 home football season with all seven home games sold out. The UI will do the same in 2011 and boasts waiting lists for not only season tickets to the home games of Kirk Ferentz’s squad, but also the premium seating options available inside the Paul W. Brechler Press Box at Kinnick Stadium. Attendance at home games of fi rst-year men’s basketball coach Fran McCaffery soared 23 percent – the fi fth-highest increase by percentage in the country and the largest by a team that did not advance to postseason play. Attendance at women’s basketball games increased by almost 60 percent. Iowa ended the year ranked 13th – the program’s highest fi nish in more than a decade. As always, success at the gate provides Barta the fi nancial resources to meet the man-date of Iowa’s institutional leadership: Operate the intercollegiate athletics program with integrity, with a commitment to academic excellence, and without any support from tax dollars, i.e. be “self-sustaining.” Inherent in Barta’s charge is to provide the more than 650 student-athletes who com-pete in the 24 intercollegiate athletics programs at the UI the best opportunity for success, including training and competition facilities that compare favorably or exceed those offered by comparable institutions. The 2010-11 season marked the fi rst for the men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams in the UI’s $69 million Campus Recreation and Wellness Center. In late summer 2011, the UI completed a $47 million revitalization of Carver-Hawkeye Arena. That project includes the construction of a practice facility for men’s and women’s basketball and volleyball, a 10,000-square-foot strength training and cardiovascular cen-ter, and an expansion to the Dan Gable Wrestling Complex, in addition to new locker room and support facilities for men’s and women’s basketball, wrestling and volleyball programs, and offi ce space for the majority of Iowa administrative and coaching staffs. The Carver project includes the installation of a statue of Gable at the facility’s main en-trance. That project will be completed in time for thousands of fans of the sport of wrestling

to enjoy when the UI stages the 2012 USA Wrestling Olympic Team Trials in April 2012 – an event that represents not only the UI’s commitment to its nationally-respected wrestling pro-gram, but Barta’s desire to strike partnerships when success would be mutually benefi cial. The UI Department of Athletics will break ground on Phase I of a two-phase project for the UI football program in late summer 2011. Phase I includes the construction of a new indoor practice facility; Phase II includes construction of all football operations areas including locker rooms, team meeting rooms, athletic medical training space, video opera-tions, and coaches offi ces and meeting rooms. Funded entirely through private support, the project is an important next phase of the master facilities plan for Hawkeye football. It will be constructed adjacent to the Ron and Margaret Kenyon Outdoor Practice Facility and immediately west of Kinnick Stadium. Barta has also received permission form the State of Iowa Board of Regents to con-struct a new practice facility for the men’s and women’s golf programs. The facility will be located on the southern edge of the UI’s award-winning Finkbine Golf Course and will begin construction as soon as the funding required is secured from friends and fans of the Iowa Hawkeyes and the UI’s golf programs. Barta’s involvement in the UI campus community extends beyond intercollegiate athlet-ics. He is a member of the President’s Cabinet comprised of vice presidents and other campus leaders that provide counsel to UI President Sally Mason. That group was instru-mental in the UI’s response to record-setting fl ooding that besieged the campus and the Iowa City and Coralville community in June 2008. Barta also represents the UI and the Hawkeyes at the conference and national level. During his fi rst fi ve years at the UI, he has participated in the creation and implementation of the Big Ten Network, the expansion of the Big Ten Conference and realignment of athlet-ics conferences nationally, and the Big Ten’s postseason bowl game agreements that were successfully implemented in 2010. Nationally, Barta remains active in the Division IA Athletics Directors Association, the National Association of College Directors of Athletics, and currently serves on the NCAA Football Committee Board of Directors. Barta often suggests to his staff that “Hope is not a strategy,” which is why he is cur-rently overseeing a comprehensive review of the strategic plan for the UI Athletics Depart-ment and has worked with the UI’s leadership on a long-term fi nancial plan. Another favorite saying of his is, “Vision without resources is irrelevant.” Over the course of his career he has been directly involved in raising hundreds of millions of dollars in support of intercollegiate athletics. This has remained a primary focus during his tenure at Iowa, where private support for the Hawkeyes continues to fl ourish despite a challenging economy. In recent years, the department has received a long list of commitments to assist in capital projects and scholarship support, including gifts of $5 million each from long-time friends of the UI – Dale and Marilyn Howard, Bruce Rastetter and Richard O. Jacobson. Under Barta’s leadership – and thanks to a talented athletics development staff – the UI has seen year-over-year improvement in annual giving in spite of the diffi cult economic environment and has generated more than $20 million of philanthropic and corporate sponsorship support for the Carver-Hawkeye Arena project. As the director of athletics at the University of Wyoming for three years, seven different UW coaches were named Mountain West Conference Coach of the Year. He also spear-headed a fund-raising effort that netted the Cowboy athletics program $11 million in private support and $11 million in matching state fund. As the senior associate athletics director at the University of Washington, he directed the “Campaign for the Student-Athlete,” was a participant in the design, construction and/or renovation of several UW athletics facilities, including Bank of America Arena and the Dempsey Indoor Practice Facility. In addition to almost doubling the amount of annual private support received by UW, Barta also managed the department’s external relations division, a task that included corporate sponsorship and radio contracts. His responsibilities at Washington expanded over time to include hiring of coaching and administrative staff and coordinating the schedule for the Huskies men’s basketball program. The roots of his development experience extend to his fi rst two positions: director of athlet-ics development and external relations at the University of Northern Iowa and director of development at his alma mater, North Dakota State University. Barta earned a bachelor of science degree in mass communication and broadcast jour-nalism from NDSU in 1987. He was an option quarterback for Bison football squads that won the Division II NCAA National Championship in 1983, 1985 and 1986. Barta, and his wife, Connie, have a son, Luke (13) and a daughter, Madison (11). He was born Sept. 4, 1963, in Minneapolis.

HAWKEYE ATHLETICS - A TOTAL PROGRAM

IOWA MEN’S GOLFThe UI Department of Athletics is under the direction of Gary Barta and is regarded as one of the top intercollegiate programs in the nation. Once again, the Hawkeyes enjoyed success both athletically and academically in 2010-11. Sixty-four Hawkeyes earned all-conference accolades, while 44 were recognized as All-Americans. Hawkeye student-athletes excelled in the classroom as well with 172 earning Academic All-Big Ten laurels. Thirty-four Hawkeyes were honored by the Big Ten Conference with the Distinguished Scholar Award. The graduation rate of Iowa’s student-athletes has improved in each of the past 10 years and has consistently ranked above the graduation rate of all UI students. Iowa’s men’s cross country, men’s and women’s tennis, and softball teams were recognized by the NCAA for their high academic marks. The four teams earned Public Recognition Awards, based on their most recent multi-year Academic Progress Rates. The UI closed the 2010-11 athletics year with a bang, establishing a school record in total points scored in the annual Learfi eld Sports Directors’ Cup. The Hawkeyes accumulated 510 points in the competition that awards points based on each institution’s fi nish in national championship competition in up to 20 total sports (10 women’s and 10 men’s). The support of their efforts and attendance by Hawkeye fans ranks among the best across the country. While the Hawkeyes compete with the best in the nation in a variety of sports, Iowa boasts some of the most impressive athletic facilities in the nation, operated by one of the most respected departments. Several new projects have come to completion on the Iowa campus. Some of the latest additions to the UI campus include the completion of the new Campus Recreation and Wellness Center, which houses the swimming and diving teams, and the state-of-the-art $7 million rowing boathouse. In addition to the brand new swimming and rowing facilities, the Roy G. Karro Athletics Hall of Fame and Visitors Center, the Russell and Ann Gerdin Athletic Learning Center and the Hawkeye Tennis and Recreation Center completed construction in recent years. Furthermore, the UI completed a $47 million Carver-Hawkeye Arena renovation project in the summer of 2011.

Vince India helped lead the men’s golf team to the NCAA Championships. He was recognized as the Big Ten Player of the Year and earned the Les Bolstad Trophy.

The 2010 Iowa Hawkeye football team won its school-record third consecutive bowl game with a thrilling 27-24 come-from-behind victory over Missouri in the 2010 Insight Bowl.

HAWKEYE ATHLETICS - A TOTAL PROGRAM

IOWA MEN’S GOLF Kinnick Stadium received a major upgrade and renovation that was completed just prior to the 2006 season. The $89 million project included the replacing of the south end zone stands and building of a four-level press box that houses 47 guest suites. New scoreboards, video walls, concession stands and rest rooms were also part of the project. Iowa student-athletes have been recognized as All-Americans in their sport on 312 occasions during the past 19 years, including 44 this past season. During the 2010-11 athletic year, the Hawkeyes continued their trend of success on the playing fi elds and in academic pursuits. Below are some examples of recent Hawkeye success. The Hawkeye wrestling team continued its dominance on the mat, fi nishing third at the NCAA Championships. Iowa has claimed 23 national championships, including three in the last four years, and 34 Big Ten titles. Five Hawkeyes earned All-American accolades en route to the team’s third place fi nish. Iowa football continued its stellar play, fi nishing in the upper division of the Big Ten for the ninth time in the last 10 years. The Hawkeyes capped their season with a thrilling 27-24 come-from-behind victory over Missouri in the Insight Bowl. The win was Iowa’s third straight bowl victory, a school record. Iowa’s fi eld hockey team has won the Big Ten Tournament championship three of the last fi ve years and fi nished third nationally, advancing all the way to the Final Four in 2008. A total of 41 Hawkeyes have garnered All-Big Ten accolades under head coach Tracey Griesbaum. The women’s basketball team had another outstanding season, fi nishing third in the league and advancing to the NCAA Tournament. Lisa Bluder, who is a three-time Big Ten Coach of the Year and two-time Regional Coach of the Year, coached Kachine Alexander and Jaime Printy to honorable mention All-America status. Alexander was also tabbed the Premier Player of the Year. Bluder has guided Iowa to eight fi rst division fi nishes in her 11 years and has taken her program to eight NCAA Tournaments, including four straight. The men’s track and fi eld team fi nished eighth in the nation at the indoor national championships and won the outdoor Big Ten title in 2011. Coach Larry Wieczorek was named Big Ten Coach of the Year, while numerous Hawkeyes earned all-league and All-America honors. Head coach Mark Hankins continued to have his men’s golfers play at a high level. The Hawkeyes advanced to the NCAA Championships for the second time in three years and tied for 10th nationally – a school-record fi nish. Vince India was named the Big Ten Player of the Year and earned the prestigious Les Bolstad Trophy, which goes to the male golfer with the lowest stroke average in the Big Ten. The men’s basketball team had its fi rst season under head coach Fran McCaffery. Hawkeye fans fl ocked to Carver-Hawkeye Arena to watch the Black and Gold. Attendance increased 20 percent, which ranked fi fth-best in the country. The aforementioned list of team and individual accomplishments are just a sampling of the recent excellence achieved in Iowa City. Whether it’s the top-notch athletic or academic performances, the outstanding community and fan support, or the impressive facilities, it’s easy to understand why Iowa fans everywhere truly believe, “It’s great to be a Hawkeye.”

The men’s track and fi eld team won the Big Ten Outdoor Championship and also fi nished eighth at the indoor NCAA championships.

ATHLETIC STUDENT SERVICES

IOWA MEN’S GOLFSince its inception in 1979, Athletics Student Ser-vices has evolved from a two-person, academic support service to a broad-based, nationally prominent student support operation. Its purpose is to offer academic and personal support ser-vices that will assist student-athletes in making timely progress toward their degrees while pre-paring to become tomorrow’s leaders. Athletics Student Services focuses on four important ar-eas – academic counseling and monitoring, edu-cational and support programs, retention pro-grams and compliance education and services – when working with student-athletes. Following are descriptions of some of the programs, ser-vices and opportunities available in those areas.

Gerdin Athletics Learning CenterThe $4.6 million Russell A. and Ann Gerdin Athletics Learning Center opened in August of 2003 and gives all Iowa student-athletes a state of the art facility to support their educational goals. The Athletics Learning Center is a 20,000 square foot facility which provides a computer lab, study lounges, seminar and meeting places for all Hawkeye student-athletes. The Learn-ing Center features an auditorium that converts into two classrooms, separate study rooms for under and upper-class student-athletes with 28 study carrels, a computer lab, tutorial rooms, the book loan repository, offi ces for Iowa’s Student Services staff and a display area to recognize the academic and athletic accomplishments of Iowa’s student-athletes.

Academic Counseling & MonitoringAthletics coordinators work closely with student-athletes and their university-assigned advisors from the time they arrive on campus until the time they leave the university. Along with fo-cusing on academic planning matters such as goal-setting, plans of study, choosing majors and degree requirements, athletics coordinators also help student-athletes understand NCAA, Big Ten and university academic policies. They also so-licit feedback from instructors on academic prog-ress made by student-athletes.

Compliance Education and Services

Athletics Student Services administers a comprehensive compliance program to ensure that all staff and student-athletes act in accordance with NCAA, Big Ten Conference and University of Iowa regu-lations. Staff members oversee and assist with the recruiting of prospective student-athletes. They monitor the continuing eligibility of student-athletes. They oversee and administer student-athlete fi nancial aid. They conduct rules education programs for coaches, staff, student-athletes and boost-ers. They monitor staff and student-athlete behavior to ensure conformity with the NCAA, Big Ten Conference, University of Iowa and Athletic Department policies and rules.

Career Guidance & DevelopmentPlanning a meaningful career and a fulfi lling life is an ongoing process of expanding and narrowing choices, beginning when student-athletes arrive on campus and continuing throughout their college ca-reer and lifetime. The professional staff works with other career development professionals on campus to offer individual consultation, career development seminars, workshops, referrals to other campus offi ces and special events like the Senior Recognition Banquet for graduating student-athletes.

TutoringTutoring is available free of charge to all student-athletes. Tutors, who are graduate and professional students, current and former teachers, help with course content as well as study strategies and are available in virtually all general education program subjects.

The $4.6 million Russell A. and Ann Gerdin Athletics Learning Center opened in August of 2003 and gives all Iowa student-athletes a state of the art facility to sup-port their educational goals.

Located near the Hillcrest, Slater, Quadrangle and Rienow residence halls, the Russell A. and Ann Gerdin Athletics Learning Center is easily accessible to Hawkeye student-athletes. Some of the facility’s features include a large com-puter lab, areas for group and independent study, and meet-ing rooms.

RetentionThrough the retention program student-athletes, who may need tailored ac-ademic assistance and structure, are identifi ed and receive individualized learning plans to help them succeed. Such plans may include daily and weekly planning sessions with athletics coordinators and retention staff, tutoring, study groups, mainstreaming into on-campus services like the writing center, math labs and services for students with learning disabilities.

Minority Enrichment ProgramThis program offers a culturally supportive environment in which minority student-athletes develop friendships and a support network in the univer-sity. A core focus group of students and staff coordinate programs such as guest speakers, holiday celebrations, community service activities with the local neighborhood centers, events with Cultural Centers and networking with minority faculty, staff, professional and business leaders.

Educational ProgramsA full menu of educational programs are offered to student-athletes to en-sure their academic success and personal development as they grow from Today’s Hawkeyes to Tomorrow’s Leaders. Through collaboration with oth-er University of Iowa student services offi ces, and in partnership with the NCAA CHAMPS/Life Skills Program, programs address such quality of life issues as alcohol safety, healthy lifestyles, tolerance and respect, career development, professional conduct and leadership development.

Transition SeminarAll new student-athletes attend an eight-week transition seminar during the fall semester that is geared toward helping them make the transition from high school to college successfully. Seminar topics include time manage-ment skills, learning and study strategies, the culture and rules of the uni-versity and Division I Big Ten intercollegiate athletics, and personal lead-ership and life skills concerning alcohol safety, healthy relationships and intimacy, diversity and inclusion, tolerance, values and character.

Leadership Development through Iowa SAACThrough the Iowa SAAC (Student-Athlete Advisory Committee), student-athlete representatives selected by their coaches and teammates repre-sent the interests and concerns of their teams to athletics administrators. They meet regularly to plan community service, personal development, career education and social programs advised and supported by Athlet-ics Student Services staff. They are consulted about emerging department policies and NCAA proposed legislation. SAAC representatives learn about and participate in the athletics governance structure by serving on depart-ment advisory committees.

SPORTS MEDICINE

IOWA MEN’S GOLFContinuing to set the standard in athletic training and Sports Medicine Ser-vice, The University of Iowa provides the student-athlete with exemplary medical care. UI Sports Medicine is a multidisciplinary healthcare team housed within the UI Sports Medicine Center, as part of University Hos-pitals & Clinics (UIHC), striving to provide exemplary everyday care for all student-athletes. The team consists of Athletic Training, Orthopedics, Pri-mary Care, Physician Assistants, Radiology, Physical Therapy, and Nurs-ing. In addition, Athletic Training Services connect student-athletes to UIHC resources and specialty areas. Iowa’s staff of 12 full-time licensed athletic trainers and six graduate assistant licensed athletic trainers provide health care services within four athletic training rooms and other ancillary facilities, involving injury rehabilitation and prevention programs among other health care services. When injuries and illness occur Iowa’s athletic trainers pro-vide treatment and rehabilitation programs to facilitate appropriate return to participation. Services from the UIHC, among the world’s largest university-owned teaching hospitals, support the efforts of the athletic trainers and other spe-cialty sports medicine staff. Located next to Kinnick Stadium, the hospital offers a cutting-edge environment where staff physicians, sports medicine fellows, sports physical therapists, and athletic trainers care for student-ath-letes and produce successful outcomes. Dedicated research and education result in outstanding care. In October 2009, the Institute for Orthopedics, Sports Medicine and Rehabilitation (IOSMR) opened to further enhance the care for student athletes. This new facility houses the UI Sports Medicine Center. Athletic trainers form a team with orthopaedic and primary care physi-cians for every Hawkeye sport. Many of the physicians are fellowship trained in their specialty area and lecture locally, nationally, and around the world. In addition, each athlete has access to orthodontists, nutrition-ists, psychologists, and specialty physicians at the UIHC. Priority access to see physicians and other health care professionals provides expertise for comprehensive health care that returns the student-athlete to practice and competition promptly and safely.

UI Sports Medicine CenterThe UI Sports Medicine Center, part of the Institute for Orthopedics, Sports Medicine and Rehabilitation, is home to state-of-the-art clinical and rehabil-itation facilities. The 26,000-square-foot building includes 16 examination rooms and four treatment rooms. Almost 7,500 square feet is devoted to comprehensive rehabilitation ser-vices, including a hydrotherapy pool, custom orthotics, athletic shoe wear modifi cation and bracing, training aids and rehabilitation accessories. The proximity of surgical and medical clinics with rehabilitation facilities and comprehensive orthopaedic and prosthetic services underscores the center’s multidisciplinary approach to sports medicine and allows patients to have all their needs met under one roof.

SPORTS MEDICINE & STRENGTH TRAINING

IOWA MEN’S GOLFThe Hawkeye Strength Training ProgramThe University of Iowa Strength and Conditioning Department is committed to providing the ultimate training experience for each Hawkeye student-athlete. Our focus is the development of the complete student-athlete through the use of proven scientifi c methods for reducing the risk of injury, as well as maximizing each student-athletes’ athletic potential. Equally as important, our staff will foster a culture of relationship building in which we will seek to enhance the intangible character traits required for each Hawkeye to reach his or her championship potential on and off the playing stage.

The Recreation Building Athletic Training Room has excellent facili-ties to conduct evaluations, treatments, and rehabilitation for the

student-athlete.

Carver-Hawkeye Arena Athletic Training RoomThe Carver-Hawkeye Arena athletic training room is a modern athletic train-ing facility used by men’s and women’s basketball, volleyball, wrestling, and men’s and women’s golf. Physician examination, treatment and rehabilita-tive therapy areas function as a clinic site for specialized care. Traditional therapies include whirlpools, hot and cold units, rehabilitation space with weights, therapy balls, plyometrics platforms, balance devices, and assort-ed Pre-Cor bikes and elliptical. Other therapeutic equipment available for the treatment of student-athletes include ultrasound, electrical stimulation, traction and external compression units.

Recreation Building Athletic Training RoomThe Recreation Building athletic training room is used by the Hawkeye baseball, men’s and women’s cross country, men’s and women’s track and fi eld, and softball teams. It supports health care with modalities (moist hot packs, ultrasound, electrical stimulation, Hivamat, and TENS), Hydroworx polar and thermal plunge pools with therapy jets and massage hoses to aid in self administration of deep tissue massage, cardiovascular equipment (LeMond independent pedal bike with Power Cranks, the Keiser Functional Trainer, Pre-Cor Ellipticals and Adaptive Motion Trainer), and a private phy-sicians offi ce.

Beckwith Boathouse Athletic Training RoomThe Beckwith Boathouse athletic training room serves the Hawkeye wom-en’s rowing team. This space has moist heat, electrical stimulation, and ultrasound modalities. Modest rehabilitation and reconditioning equipment are also present for limited onsite rehabilitation.

Campus Recreation and Wellness Center Athletic Training RoomThe Campus Recreation and Wellness Center athletic training room serves the Hawkeye men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams. This space has moist heat, electrical stimulation, and ultrasound modalities. Modest rehabilitation and reconditioning equipment are also present for limited on-site rehabilitation.

Strength & Conditioning PhilosophyThe philosophy of this program consists of two components. The fi rst is to continually develop a scientifi cally sound program that will maximize strength, power and explosiveness in order to allow the athlete to get the utmost out of their genetic potential, and to reduce the chance of injury. This will primarily be accomplished through the use of ground based free weight exercises and the progressive incorporation of functional movements and plyometrics. The second is to establish a culture which will develop the discipline, character and mental toughness within each student-athlete and team as a whole so that they are able to make sacrifi ces in their training, leave their comfort zone and develop a Championship ATTITUDE. This will encourage them to make the most out of every situation and opportunity given to them in athletics and academics, so that they might know what it is to be fully committed to something. When these two converge, they are not only able to reach their full potential; they become champions on and off the playing fi eld.

A Fun Place to Call HomeIowa City is a classic university town where learning and creating truly matter. The city blends the vibrant university campus and the natural beauty of the Iowa River with nearby shopping, entertainment, and residential areas.

Commanding ResourcesThe university operates one of the largest research library systems in the country. Iowa equips its classrooms and laboratories with the latest in computer technology. Students benefi t from this technology-rich environment coupled with the high personal attention of university faculty and staff. Visit the university’s web site at www.uiowa.edu to learn about its multifaceted education, research and service programs.

More Than a Taste of the ArtsAlthough temporarily displaced from their buildings by a summer 2008 fl ood, Hancher Auditorium and the UI Museum of Art continue to offer performances, exhibits and special events in alternate venues. Premiere works of art are displayed in most university buildings and plazas throughout campus. Students may participate in theater, music, and dance groups.

Time and Space to PlayEvery year about 90 percent of Iowa’s students make use of the university’s recreational facilities. Each season offers a full schedule of intramural and club sports, ranging from rugby, tennis, and golf to volleyball, soccer, and swimming. Individual workouts are a part of many students’ daily routines. Students also make use of campus walking and running trails, bikeways, ski trails, golf courses, and canoe and sailboat rentals to relax and enjoy leisure time.

What Distinguishes an Iowa Education?Success. Iowa’s philosophy is that if students meet the entrance requirements, the university is going to do everything it can to help students to graduate. An Iowa degree spells success in the job market, giving students the skills to continue learning and growing throughout their careers.Excellence. The faculty is stellar. Students are amazed not only at how much they know but at how enthused they are about sharing that knowledge and getting students excited about their subject.

Comfortable class sizesAttending a large university does not necessarily mean having large class sizes. More than 30,000 students are enrolled at Iowa, but the UI has a student-to-faculty ratio of 15:1. Large lecture halls host a few of the most popular undergraduate courses, with several hundred students in attendance. However, most lectures are complemented by classroom discussions among smaller groups. Altogether, 92 percent of undergraduate classes have fewer than 50 students in them; 80 percent have fewer than 30 students. Less than 4 percent of undergraduate classes have more than 100 students in them.

Iowa City is a diverse, highly cosmopolitan community of 60,000 set in the natural scenic beauty of Iowa’s rolling hills and woods along the tree-lined banks of the Iowa River. Iowa City has all the art galleries, ethnic foods, historic architecture and vibrant atmosphere of a much larger city, but with the compactness and friendly feeling of a small town. As a place to live, Iowa City keeps winning awards and accolades. Named one of the 50 “Best Places to Live and Play” by National Geographic Adventure, Iowa City is ranked second among small metro areas for business and careers, and eighth among up and coming tech cities by Forbes. Money ranks Iowa City as the third-best place in the nation to retire, while Fortune lists it as the 21st-best “Place to Live and Launch”. Largely as a result of the UI’s pioneering leadership in creative writing, Iowa City has been designated America’s fi rst UNESCO “City of Literature.” Economically, businesses such as Rockwell Collins, American College Testing and Procter & Gamble help keep the city booming. In Coralville, a branch offi ce of Geico Auto Insurance has provided many residents with employment opportunities. Culturally, Iowa City is alive with concerts, art exhibits, readings, plays and art events of all kinds. Located on the University of Iowa campus, Hancher Auditorium is a nationally-known performance center that brings in the best of Broadway, classical and jazz music, dance and other performances. The University of Iowa Theatre Arts department also produces a full schedule of plays each year, featuring the work of student performers and directors. So whether you enjoy the arts as a spectator or as an outlet for your own creativity, Iowa City has the opportunities. For more than 70 years emerging writers have come to the Iowa Writers’ Workshop, fostering and celebrating American literature. Residents of Iowa City are not only economically and culturally enriched, they also take advantage of the numerous recreational facilities offered around town. The area’s more than 30 parks provide opportunities for year-round activities including boating, hiking, swimming, fi shing and skiing. The city’s greatest charm, however, remains the sincere friendliness of its citizens, the cosmopolitan atmosphere and the successful partnership built between the community and the university.

Old CapitolOne of the most recognizable sites in Iowa City is the gold dome of the Old Capitol which is situated in the heart of downtown. Built in 1840, it is Iowa City’s most historic building. The Old Capitol was the site of the fi rst governor inauguration as well as the fi rst six Iowa General Assemblies. It is also where the state’s Constitution was drafted. When the capital was moved to Des Moines in 1857, the Old Capitol was dedicated to The University of Iowa, becoming the fi rst building owned by the University.

Coralville LakeJust north of Iowa City is Coralville Lake, an outdoor recreational area that offers a variety of opportunities for the public. Coralville Lake offers picnic shelters, biking, hiking, fi shing, boating, swimming, hunting, camp-ing, snowmobiling, cross country skiing, golf and disc golf.

City PlazaLocated downtown and in walking distance of many of the University’s dormitories is the City Plaza. It is a perfect place to sit outside and study or hang out with friends. During the fall, spring and summer months there are concerts and art festivals in the “Ped Mall”.

Coral Ridge MallThe Coral Ridge Mall is a 1.2-million-square-foot shopping center located just minutes from campus. HAWKEYE TRADITIONS

IOWA MEN’S GOLF

School Fight SongThe Iowa Fight Song was written in 1950 by Mason City, Iowa, native Meredith Willson. Best known as the creator of Broadway’s “The Music Man,” Willson was awarded a 1963 University of Iowa Alumni Association Distinguished Service Award for “setting the spirit of Iowa to music.” The lively cheer is sung hundreds of times during Iowa athletics events the year around.

The word is Fight, Fight, Fight for IOWALet every loyal Iowan sing;

The word is Fight, Fight, Fight for IOWAUntil the walls and rafters ring (Go Hawks!)

Come on and cheer, cheer, cheer for IOWA

Come on and cheer until you hear the fi nal gun.

The word is Fight, Fight, Fight for IOWA

Until the game is won.

The Hawkeye NicknameThe University of Iowa borrowed its athletic nickname from the state of Iowa many years

ago. The name Hawkeye was originally the name of the hero in the fi ctional novel, The

Last of the Mohicans, written by James Fenimore Cooper. Cooper had the Delaware

Indians bestow the name on a white scout who lived with them.

In 1838, 12 years after the book was published, people in the territory of Iowa acquired

the nickname, chiefl y through the efforts of Judge David Rorer of Burlington and James

Edwards of Fort Madison.

Edwards, editor of the Fort Madison Patriot, moved his paper to Burlington in 1843

and renamed it the Burlington Hawkeye. The two men continued their campaign to

popularize the name, and territorial offi cials eventually gave it their formal approval.

Herky The HawkeyeThe Hawkeye nickname gained a tangible symbol in 1948 when a cartoon character,

later to be named Herky the Hawkeye was hatched. The creator was Richard Spencer

III, instructor of journalism at Iowa.

The impish Hawk was an immediate hit and acquired a name through a statewide

contest staged by the athletic department. John Franklin, a Belle Plaine alumnus, was

the man who suggested Herky.

Since his birth more than 45 years ago, Herky has symbolized Iowa athletics and

epitomized university life. He even donned a military uniform during the Korean War

and became the insignia of the 124th Fighter Squadron.

During the mid-1950s, Herky came to life at a football game as the Iowa mascot.

Since that time, Herky has been a familiar fi gure at Iowa athletics events.

School ColorsFor 40 years Iowa was without school colors, but in 1887 a group of 50 seniors met on

the steps of the Old Capitol to decide what are now the school offi cial colors. They chose

gold, the color of Iowa’s vast corn fi elds and black, the color of the rich soil.
