SUEWOODSTRAHead Coach10th Season

Sue Woodstra began her tenure as the Lumberjacks head coach in 2002, and has since compiled a 60-173 record with the Lumberjacks and a

202-359 career coaching record.Woodstra took a year and a half leave of absence

from the Lumberjack program for the 2007 and begin-ning of the 2008 seasons. In June 2007, at the helm of the USA National Team, she coached the indoor women’s volleyball team to a bronze medal at the Pan American Games. She continued serving Team USA as first assistant coach during its run to the silver medal at the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

In 2005, Woodstra guided the Lumberjacks to a 13-13 overall record and a 9-9 Great Northwest Athletic

Conference mark. The season’s .500 winning percent-age was achieved for the first time since 1999.

The former University of California head volleyball coach and 1984 Olympic silver medalist is the 10th head coach in the history of the volleyball program at Humboldt State.

Woodstra, who last served as an assistant coach at Florida State University, officially took over the volley-ball duties in May of 2002. She replaced current HSU Athletic Director Dan Collen, who also served as interim volleyball coach for the 2002 season.

After an outstanding playing career that included serving as team captain of the 1984 silver medal U.S. Olympic team, Woodstra began coaching as an assistant at Arizona State University in 1985. After four seasons at ASU, she was hired as head coach at the University of Pittsburgh (1989-1992) where she led the Lady Panthers to four consecutive Big East conference titles and NCAA tournament appearances.

Page 7: 2012 Humboldt State Volleyball Guide

www.hsujacks.com 7

Woodstra earned Big East Coach of the Year honors in 1990, then spent a year coaching internationally at the professional level in Germany, guiding the USC Munster team to a 28-4 record and the C.E.V. European Cup Championship in 1993.

The following year, Woodstra served as a volunteer coach at the University of Notre Dame before becoming the head coach at Cal in 1995.

As a standout player at the University of Southern California, Woodstra helped the Lady Trojans to the 1977 AIAW National Championship while earning All-America honors. She went on to an impressive eight-year career on the U.S. National Team and served as team captain for four seasons.

While playing for the national team, Woodstra helped the United States to the 1983 Zone Championship and three other top five finishes in Zone and World Championship play. She served as captain as a member of the 1984 U.S. Olympic Team that earned a silver medal at the Olympic Games in Los Angeles.

Woodstra played four seasons (1984-88) on the professional level for the NEC Volleyball Team of the Japan League. She also played three seasons with the Merrill Lynch/Reebok USVBA team where she earned Most Valuable Player honors after leading the squad to its second straight national championship in 1986. In 1993, Woodstra was selected as a USVBA All-Time Great

Volleyball Player for her career achievements and was recently named to the USVBA All-Era Team.

In May of 2005, Woodstra was honored along with her 1980 USA women’s Olympic volleyball teammates at USA Volleyball’s 60th Annual Dorothy C. Boyce Awards and Recognition Banquet. Woodstra was a member of the 1980 team that was expected to challenge for a medal at the 1980 Summer Olympic games in Moscow, but did not compete when the USOC’s House of Del-egates voted to boycott the Games to protest the Soviet Union’s invasion of Afganistan in 1979.

Chad Nelson joined the Lumberjack staff as Assistant Volleyball Coach in 2012, bringing coaching experience at the National Collegiate Athletic Association Division I and Division III levels, as well as National Christian College Athletic Association playing and coaching experience.

Nelson earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in Business Administration with an emphasis in Sports Marketing from Lincoln Christian University, where he is set to be inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2012. During his undergrad, Nelson competed on the basketball, golf and baseball teams.

Once his playing career had finished, Nelson moved to the other side of collegiate competition, helping coach the volleyball achieve a record of 110 wins with only 37 losses from 2002-06. In 2003, the squad claimed its second NCCAA National Championship, after previously winning the title in 1998.

Nelson also helped coach the men’s basketball team and took the men’s golf head coach while at LCU.Upon graduation, Nelson took his coaching talents to Normal, Ill., where he was a volunteer assistant coach at

Illinois State University in 2007. The Redbirds finished the season with a 21-12 record and qualified for the NCAA Tournament.

Following his year at Illinois State, Nelson took over the head volleyball, softball and tennis coaching positions at Illinois College before serving as an assistant coach at the University of Iowa, where the Hawkeyes finished with an 11-22 overall record.

In his spare time, the Newaygo, Mich., native enjoys golfing and playing sand volleyball.

ROLLINRICHMONDPresident of Humboldt State Universtiy

DANCOLLENAthletic Director

Following a distinguished career as a faculty member, researcher in evolutionary biology, and academic administrator, Rollin C. Richmond was appointed the sixth president of Humboldt State University in 2002. Since his appointment, Humboldt State has gained recognition as a student-centered, diverse, and sustainable university which serves as an important community and economic hub.

Richmond’s research focus is in the areas of the genetic mechanisms of evolution and the genetic bases for the effects of psychoactive drugs. He has won numerous grants from the National Institutes of Health and National Science Foundation, published over 80 articles in his field, and has presented his research findings internationally.

Richmond’s campus and community involvements include service on the boards of the Long Island Technology Incubator while at SUNY Stony Brook, the H. Lee Moffitt Cancer Center at the University of South Florida, and local United Way efforts in Florida, New York, Iowa and California. His honors include fellowship in the American Association for the Advancement of Science and Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization (Australia), the University of South Florida President’s Award for Outstanding Performance and Enhancement of Affirmative Action in Higher Education, and an honorary doctorate from Georgia Agrarian State University.

During Collen’s tenure as Athletic Director, the Lumberjack scholarship fund has quadrupled, providing educational opportunities to a diverse population of student-athletes. Those same students have brought success to the court, fields and track, entertaining a supportive community that has generously contributed to fundraising efforts and corporate sponsorships. Collen’s success is rooted in vast administrative experience that includes 21 years as director of Humboldt State’s Center Activities. He has also served a variety of non-profit organizations, including the management of the Arcata Community Pool and as past president of the Arcata Chamber of Commerce. The Chamber honored Collen for his achievements, naming him Business Leader of the Year. Collen’s understanding of the coaching realm stems from his previous roles at the high school, college and United States Volleyball Association levels since 1977. He served as the Lumberjacks head volleyball coach for four seasons from 1989 to 1992 and compiled a career record of 83-44, including a 31-7 single season record in 1990. He was an assistant coach for the HSU women’s volleyball team and the head coach of the men’s club team from 1977-79. Previously, Collen was the head coach of College of the Redwoods in 1981 and also coached high school and numerous nationally-ranked USVBA teams. Collen, who was born in Corpus Christi, Texas, resides in Arcata with his wife, Sarah. Collen has three children, Arian, Corey and Marissa.

2012OUTLOOKHead coach Sue Woodstra isn’t new to the game of volleyball—

she even has a silver Olympic medal to prove it—but this season she has quite a few new additions. Seven newcomers and two new coaches will need to learn Woodstra’s ways in hopes of a successful season, something Woodstra has no doubt can happen.

After a successful camping trip, complete with heat and meteor showers, an even mix of returning and new players started their first day of intense practice on the volleyball court in Lumberjack Arena on Monday afternoon. After taking the time while camping to start getting to know all the new faces on the team, the Jacks came to practice eager for the fresh season to start.

“We have as many new players as returners, so it will be important for us to get to know each other very quickly,” said Woodstra. “We’ll have to try to define everyone’s role that will make us the best team possible. We’ll be learning a lot about each other throughout the season, but so far, I like the chemistry of the group to be able to fulfill those expectations.”

One of the concerns Woodstra has heading into camp is her small number of players. Unlike some seasons, Woodstra doesn’t have the numbers in many of the positions this year.

“We have a small group this year,” said Woodstra. “Some positions don’t have great depth to them so it’ll be key for us to stay healthy and injury-free in every position.”

Coaching StaffWoodstra enters

her 10th season at the helm of the volleyball team, hoping to build on last year’s 8-18 finish. The Jacks proved they could compete with some of the top teams in the California Collegiate Athletic Association, beating Chico State on the road and sweeping both Cal State Monterey Bay and Cal State Dominguez Hills, but want to move higher in the conference rankings.

“I want this group to play as a team, to be competitive in every match and to learn something every time we step out on the court,” said Woodstra. “In the past, we’ve competed really well until right at the end of sets, winning some, but letting too many slip to our opponents. That’s a specific area we’ll work to improve on.”

Two new coaches join Woodstra on the bench and at practice to help make the Jacks a bigger threat in the CCAA. Chad Nelson takes on the assistant coach position after long-time assistant James Kealilio stepped down. Nelson brings coaching experience at the National Collegiate Athletic Association Division I and Division III levels, as well as National Christian College Athletic Association playing and coaching experience. Prior to Humboldt State, Nelson coached at the University of Iowa, Illinois State, Illinois College and his alma mater Lincoln Christian University.

Jason Crowley makes his NCAA coaching debut as a volunteer assistant coach. Previously, Crowley coached the HSU men’s club volleyball program for two years. Originally from Chula Vista, Crowley played volleyball at Grossmont College in San Diego and was an All-California Interscholastic Federation first team selection in high school.Position Breakdown

LiberosThree Lumberjacks will compete for the starting libero spot, with

Tiffany McCray being the only veteran in the mix. McCray saw limited action in 2011, but enters her third season playing for the Jacks. Two transfers, Megan Bowen (junior transfer from Shasta College) and Sarah Johnson (sophomore transfer from College of the Redwoods), will also vie for game action.

Middle BlockersOne of the positions the Jacks lack depth in is the middle blocker

spot. Just two veterans return to work together at the net,

senior Allison Drobish and sophomore Merry Ellen Ackema. Last year,

Drobish led HSU in blocks, tallying 110 total blocks,

24 of which were block solos. Ackema rounded out second with

70 blocks as a true freshman.

Outside HittersThe outside hitters make up the majority of the team,

led by key returners Ashley Neale and Alexa Rosendale. In 2011, Neale made 122 kills, 204 digs and 49 blocks, while Rosendale picked up 210 kills, 241 digs and 24 service aces. The duo will likely resume their starting positions, but have several other teammates looking to get playing action. Veteran Channel Washington knows what is expected when it comes to Lumberjack volleyball as she enters her third season playing for the Jacks. Three freshman, led by Danielle Carlson (from Gaviota, Calif.), will look to add some much needed depth to the roster. Annie Allen (Seattle, Wash.) and Symone Hayden (Fresno, Calif.) hope to contribute in their debut collegiate seasons. Ashley Owen, a junior transfer from Indiana State, brings Div. I experience to the mix, but will have to sit out this season due to transfer rules.

SettersTwo young players make up the setters pool for the Jacks. Sarah

Wilber returns for her second season with the Jacks after seeing limited action off the bench as a freshman. Kelci Renshaw, a four-year letterwinner at Kamehameha Schools from Nanakuli, Hawaii, was helped her team claim three State Championships and hopes to bring that championship edge for the Jacks.

The mission of the Humboldt State University Student Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) is to enhance the total student-athlete experience by promoting opportunity, protecting student-athlete welfare, maintaining athletic integrity, acting as a liaison between student-athletes and the administrations, and fostering a positive student-athlete image. HSU SAAC also offers input on the rules, regulations and polices that affect student-athletes’ lives on NCAA member institution campuses.

Each year the HSU SAAC’s primary fundraising activity has revolved around the Make-A-Wish Foundation. The Make-A-Wish Foundation grants the wishes of children with life-threatening medical conditions to enrich the human experience with hope, strength, and joy. It is the largest wish-granting charity in the world, with 76 chapters in the United States and its territories and 27 international affiliates on 5 continents. With the help of generous donors and more than 25,000 volunteers, the Make-A-Wish Foundation has granted more than 110,000 wishes to children around the world since 1980.

HSU SAAC members also participate in local community and campus outreach efforts such as Read Across America, Betty Chinn’s Blue Angels, Food For People and Socks for Soldiers.
