Support for Sustainable Communities “This Green House- Funding for Municipal Retrofits”Saturday February 11, 12:45 pm - 2:00 pm

Saving energy, saving money, saving the planet - all at the same time. The cleanest alternative energy is the energy not used: that’s why making sure existing homes are retrofitted to save energy makes so much sense. And it saves money for homeowners too. Sometimes not having the funds stops homeowners from taking this key step. In this workshop you’ll hear about case studies of towns taking the lead to get beyond this barrier in the United States and explore what needs to happen here in Saskatchewan to follow the same model.

BRIAN BRUNSKILL South Central Enterprise Region

Brian has been working as a consulting geologist in the petroleum industry in Canada since 1985. Work has included the evaluation of deep aquifers with respect to their geological character and fluid movement. This includes the assessment of their hydrocarbon bearing potential and exploitation, particularly through the application of horizontal drilling methods. Since 2003, this work has included the geological assessment for the injection and disposal of carbon dioxide in deep saline aquifers in

Saskatchewan. Brian is also a promoter of the use of deep geothermal energy that can be mined from deep aquifers and utilized as a heating source. Using deep geothermal energy can reduce our dependence on non-renewable, carbon-based fuels and provide an associated reduction in CO2 emissions. Green Energy in Community Design. Presentation of 2011 feasibility study on the development of Geothermal Neighborhoods in Moose Jaw. Friday, February 10, 2:45 pm - 4:00 pm

The earth’s crust becomes progressively warmer with increased depth due to heat generated from deep inside the earth. The rocks underlying southern Saskatchewan consist of sedimentary layers, and some of these layers host prolific aquifers that contain hot, geothermally-heated water. This water can be pumped to the surface where the energy can be utilized in direct heating applications.

Geothermal energy is a sustainable resource that can provide a long term, reliable, nearly emissions-free form of energy and a stable, long-term revenue stream. As well as making a significant contribution to Saskatchewan’s energy supply mix, geothermal energy is clean, quiet and is practically inexhaustible. It can meet some of southern Saskatchewan’s heating needs form any generations with very little impact on the environment. This form of energy is used in many parts of the world. In parts of Europe, this grade of geothermal heat has been used extensively for space heating, aquiculture, greenhouses and industrial processes. In France, for example, about 61 geothermal plants currently use geothermal water from sedimentary rocks to heat approximately 200,000 residential units, and at the same time avoid the emission of up to 650,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide per year.

There is utilization potential throughout much of southern Saskatchewan and the technology required to develop this enormous energy endowment is well understood and simple. A geothermal utility can be built and operated by an individual, a developer, a third-party joint venture partnership or by an existing utility operator. Communities could finance, develop and distribute the heat supply to community centers, homes, hospitals, schools, swimming pools and multiplex facilities. The geothermal supply could provide a dependable heat supply and predictable return on investment for 25-50 years, or more. This session will describe the technology, its application and feasibility, and will present the results of an implementation case study on the feasibility of a geo-thermally-heated residential development in Moose Jaw, funded by the South Central Enterprise.

ANGIE BUGGBE, PEng., Saskatchewan Enviromental Society

Angie manages energy conservation projects for the Saskatchewan Environmental Society. As well as working with teachers and students through the highly successful Destination Conservation Saskatchewan program, she works with building operators, and people in all types of office, school and health care facilities reduce their energy consumption at work, and help their buildings run more efficiently. She also works with non-profit organizations to identify energy conservation potential in their facilities. Angie has been working with SES for the past 8 years to help people live sustainable lives and build a sustainable future.

Support for Sustainable Workplaces and Homes. Builder Operator Training (BOT) and Energy Awareness (EA) Training overviews. Friday, February 10, 4:00 pm - 5:15 pm (Concurrent Session)Saturday, February 11, 10:30 am - 11:45 am (Concurrent Session)

Designed to introduce building operators to energy conservation principles, new technologies and facility retrofits that will save energy and money. Occupant awareness can reduce utility costs in a building 5 to 10%. BOT is designed for those individuals who provide a generalized service to their organizations, such as individuals who operate an entire facility. EA training is a program that builds teamwork among co-workers in conserving energy, water and reducing waste all the while reducing costs at work and at home. The session provides valuable information; both technical and behavioural that will help individuals save; both energy and money.

EQuilibrium Communities and Regent Park RevitalizationFriday, February 10, 1:00 pm – 2:30 pmSaturday, February 11, 10:30 am – 11:45 am (Concurrent Session)

Regent Park is a 50 years old housing community situated in east downtown Toronto that currently houses over 2,500 low-income families. Due to its aging infrastructure and related social problems, it was decided to redevelop the whole neighbourhood (69 acres) through active engagement and consultation with local residents, community partners, selection of a developer partner and adoption of a sustainable energy design approach to turn it into a sustainable housing community that demonstrates the triple-bottom line business model holding social, economic and environmental aspects in a holistic equilibrium.

ERIC PENNER de WAALSprossil Industries Inc., Waalnut Construction & VerEco Homes

At the age of 29, Eric Penner de Waal finds himself splitting his time between managing his two companies and educating others about the benefits of Earth Conscious Building.

Eric completed an Alberta apprenticeship in 2005 receiving a scholarship and, Interprovincial Certification as a Certified Journeyman Carpenter. After completing his institutionalized training he began his informal training in alternative building technologies, sciences, and processes. Whether attending workshops, reading the seemingly endless flow of books, or discovering new building methods from around the world online, his passion for buildings all but consumes his life.

Waalnut Construction Corporation, founded in 2008, is a Regina based construction company devoted entirely to a philosophy they define as Earth Conscious Building, which holds efficiency, non-toxicity, and environmental stewardship as its main pillars. The company has since won awards and become an example of what the future holds for the building industry. Eric is continually innovating in search for solutions to the challenges that currently plague the construction industry. Drawing on the experiences gained through his work with Waalnut Construction he invented the Smart Stud®, a hybrid stud that limits thermal bridging, and subsequently founded Sprossil Industries Inc.

Eric spends the rest of his time as a board member for the Saskatchewan chapter of the Canada Green Building Council.
