A LETTER FROM THEPRESIDENT
Welcome to the fall 2012 sportsseason at TJHSST, a Fairfax County publicschool, a Virginia Governor’s School and America’s Best High School! We extenda special welcome to the Class of 2016,and a big thanks to all our visitors and loyal fans!
As a comprehensive high school, TJoffers a quality sports program along with its acclaimed academic programs. And, like all other FCPS high schools, most of the sports funding must beraised independently of the County. The Colonial Athletic Boosters (CAB) providesthe additional funds needed to fi eld the multitude of teams each year. And theseteams succeed! Last year, TJ athleteswon numerous individual all-district, all-region and all-state honors. And TJcontinues to bask in the glow of our 2007Boys Soccer and Cross-Country State Championships.
Our major source of funds is the annualCAB Membership drive. Joining is easy on the website www.colonicalathletics.org with a click on Booster Membership, or by mailing the membership form, which can
be printed from the website. The websitealso includes valuable information aboutsports at TJ and an online catalogue of our spirit clothing and merchandiseavailable for purchase.
Spirit merchandise is also displayed in the school’s AudLob (Auditorium Lobby)showcase, and is sold at all home footballgames. All proceeds from merchandise and food concessions go directly to TJAthletics, so please buy and wear your TJcolors proudly and enjoy a snack at ourconcession stands!
The CAB also needs volunteers! Getting involved is a great way to meet othersports parents and to see how the school works, and is key to the success of our athletes and programs!! Open positions are listed on the website under Volunteer Opportunities. We meet on the second Wednesday of the month at 7:00pm inthe library. Please join us – we’d love tohave you!

Words from Tj’s atc’sThe Thomas Jefferson Athletic Training
Program provides valuable athletic health care services to the student-athletes participating in all sports. Each FairfaxCounty Public High School employs twoCertifi ed Athletic Trainers. Athletic Training is an athletic healthcare profession recognized by the American MedicalAssociation. Athletic Trainers (ATs) providecomprehensive athletic healthcare toathletes in many different settings. Responsibilities include injury prevention, immediate injury care, clinical evaluationand diagnosis, treatment, rehabilitationand reconditioning, organization and administration and professional responsibility. AT have an understanding of specifi c sports requirements, which enablesthem to develop specifi c rehabilitationexercises to better prepare athletes for their activity. The AT also serves as a liaison between athletes, coaches, parents, treating physicians, and other health careprofessionals.
The practice of athletic training is regulated within the Commonwealth of Virginia, and all ATs must be licensed by Virginia’s Board of Medicine. ATs work under the supervision of a physician. ATs provide information on preventing injuries, immediate care when injuries occur and follow-up care and treatment within theirscope of practice. Together, the AT andphysician work to provide the highest quality of health care possible within FCPSathletics. The AT also keeps records of all treatments administered, injuries evaluated, rehabilitation programs implemented, as
well as pertinent medical information on each athlete. Essential to providing quality healthcare to all athletes is consistent communication among athletes, parents, treating physicians, coaches, athleticadministrators and the athletic training staff.
Heather Murphy is the full-time Head Athletic Trainer at TJ. She grew up an AirForce brat and traveled in her childhood. She graduated from O’Fallon Township HighSchool in O’Fallon, IL in 1994. She went on to study Exercise Science and Athletic Training at Truman State University inKirksville, MO. After receiving her BS and becoming a Certifi ed Athletic Trainer, she attended Michigan State University and received a MS in Kinesiology. This will beher twelfth year as an ATC at TJ and in FCPS. She enjoys training for and participating intriathlons, cross-stitching and playing the violin and hand bells for her Church in her spare time.
Tim “Mr. C” Cocrane is returning for hissecond year as Associate Athletic Trainer atTJ. Tim graduated from Longwood University in 2011 with a bachelor’s degree in AthleticTraining and is currently attending graduateschool to receive his master’s degree in Rehabilitation Science from CaliforniaUniversity of Pennsylvania.
