Recycle! When?It’s coming soon!

Recycle! How?It’s easy! Use your blue recycling roll-out cart to collect your recyclables all week long (see list of items you can recycle on the fold-in fl ap). Just pitch it all in – NO NEED TO SEPARATE ITEMS – We do that for you! Roll your cart out curbside by 7 a.m. on your weekly pickup day. Curbside recycling service is being provided to Fayetteville City residents who live in single-family dwellings.

Recycle! Why?It makes sense in so many ways!

Recycling saves resources used to make new materials. It takes about 24 trees to produce one ton of non-recycled offi ce paper. Producing a ton of steel from recycled materials saves 2,500 lbs. of iron ore, 1,400 lbs. of coal and 120 lbs. of limestone.

Recycling saves energy. Consider the approximate energy savings when producing various products from recycled materials, rather than “virgin” materials:

• 30% less energy for recycled glass • 60% less energy for recycled paper • 66% less energy for recycled plastic • 95% less energy for recycled aluminum cans

Curbside Recycling Program

Recycling signifi cantly reduces both air and water pollution. Producing paper from trees requires more water than any other industrial process in the U.S and dumps billions of gallons of wastewater into our waterways each year. Producing one ton of recycled steel creates 86% less air pollution. Recycling also reduces the need for landfi lls and incinerators, which create pollutants that contaminate the air and groundwater.

Recycling is good for the economy. It enables valuable raw materials, resources and energy to be used more wisely.

Recycling creates jobs. Projections show that a 20% increase in recycling would create up to 500 new jobs in North Carolina.

Now that convenient, comprehensive curbside pickup is at your disposal, we’re hoping it will become second nature for everyone to recycle. We also want to assure you that your recyclables are truly being recycled.

Recycle! What?It runs the gamut! Items you can put in your cart for curbside recycling include:

• Glass: bottles and containers only - brown, clear and green• Aluminum cans• Steel cans• Plastic bottles – such as soda and water bottles, milk jugs and detergent containers (look for the recyclable “stamp” on the bottom)• Newspapers, including inserts and magazines• Corrugated cardboard and food/cereal boxes• Mixed paper – offi ce paper, “junk mail” and catalogs

Items That Cannot Be Recycled

• Glass (other than bottles and containers) including sheet glass and mirrors• China, porcelain or ceramic dishes• Plastic bags• Cellophane wrap• Styrofoam• Paper or cardboard with a wax coating• Soggy paper or wet cardboard• Empty oil quarts or other petroleum product containers• Bulky plastic items like toys and outdoor furniture

Do’s & Don’t-Have-To’s

• You do NOT have to remove labels or caps from recycled items• You do NOT have to crush plastic containers, but you can if choose to save space• Please DO empty containers (remove food, drink, etc.) and give them a quick rinse• Please DO remove plastic bags from food boxes – they are not recyclable• Please DO break down larger boxes so they fi t in the cart
