Showdown in Fallon: Looking For the "Fastest Gun Alive" Oct 05, 2012 There's a crowd at the Churchill County

Fairgrounds in Fallon. All in Western dress, each

with a gun on their hip and every minute or so, the

sound of gunfire.

Around here they go by names like "Buzzard"

"Masked Rider, the "Tombstone Kid."

You should smile, stranger, when you call them

that though truth be told. there's little consequence

if you don't.

Some grew up watching Gunsmoke or Have Gun

Will Travel, The younger were denied that

experience, but they're drawn by the same fantasy.

Like those who take up Civil War re-enactment and medieval jousting, they spend long weekends losing

themselves in another identity and another age, in this case the most iconic American age of all.

"It's the American Old West, says Cal Eilrich, who goes by the name "Quick Cal" in this crowd and is

running the event. "It's the romance and the legend of it."

Like gunslingers of old they are pitting themselves against each other. Not face to face, as it turns out, but

side by side, facing targets, waiting, not for someone to say "Draw", but to be prompted by a starting

light.

When it comes the guns clear the holster and they fire from the hip, sometimes in a half second or less.

The trick is to be fast, but also be accurate.

I'm sure it was the same at the OK Corral. Beating the other guy to the draw is all well and good, but for

naught if you're don't hit anything.

The winners are determined by the thousandth of a second. But only if you hit the target.

And there's no one left bleeding in the sand. Your victim is likely to shake your hand or in the case of the

ladies, hug.

Yup, that's another difference.

"The guys get into that smack talk. We don't do that.." says Treasea Long, who goes by the moniker

"Fannie Mae" dressed in demure gingham, sporting a Colt .45 and a parasol.

As it turns out this is an activity that also appeals to women.

"it's a family friendly activity," she says.

Long's adopted personna seems unlikely--a preacher's wife, who apparently never goes out without her

trusty 45 or her parasol.

A stretch? Perhaps,

Page 4: 2012 City Of Fallon Media Placements

"It's like you can be whoever you want in the hospital," notes Eilrich.

Well said. Besides no one's going to pull dress code violation on her. She's packing a firearm.

"Exactly," she says.

She can back up that talk. Two years ago she was the fastest woman here. There are cash prizes for a win

like that. We suspect the bragging rights are worth even more.

The guns all have to be some version of an historically accurate firearm, usually a Colt .45, the famous

"Peacemaker." The getup some sort of take on authentic western gear.

"We don't allow baseball caps or any fancy ties like you're wearing today," advises Eilrich.

We get it. The competition is only part of what's going on here.

In our heart of hearts, I suspect, a lot of us would welcome playing cowboy, gunslinger, even don't mess

with me school marm, for a day or two.

The lucky have found a way to do that.

Elimination rounds continue at the Churchill County Fairgrounds Saturday at 9. Finals start at 10 am

Sunday. It's open to the public and admission is free.

For years the Mayor's Youth Fund has benefited children in

Churchill County.

The fund has helped children in need an opportunity to engage

in educational, recreational and cultural activities. On Saturday,

the fund's biggest fundraiser hit the links for the 10th annual

Mayor's Cup Golf Tournament at the Golf Course at Fallon.

The tournament hosted 12 teams by offering numerous raffle

prizes including a two-night golf package in Reno and a 32-inch

flat screen TV.

In addition to the tournament, the fourth annual Governmental Grudge Cup was up for grabs after the

city of Fallon team beat the Churchill County team last year. The county, however, exacted its revenge

and drove past the city to secure its third win in four years.

The county team was comprised of Comptroller Alan Kalt, Justice of the Peace Mike Richards,

Commissioner Pete Olsen and District Attorney Child Support Coordinator Brenda Mahan.

Mayor Ken Tedford Jr. and Fallon Convention and Tourism Authority Executive Director Rick Gray

presented trophies and prizes to the winners. According to Gray, the tournament raised more than

$5,000.

Since the inception of the Mayor's Youth Fund, donations have totaled more than $110,000 and Tedford

said the golf tournament is the primary source of revenue for the fund.

“Mostly, the money for the Mayor's Youth Fund has come from this tournament,” he said. “Everybody

seemed to have a good time.”

Tedford's idea for the youth fund came after a trip to San Francisco and reading an article about former

Mayor Willie Brown's fund. Tedford's staff contacted Brown and the fund was structured in similar ways

to Brown's.

Page 6: 2012 City Of Fallon Media Placements

Tedford had wanted to give money to the underprivileged youth, but could not do so because it was

against the law to use public money to fund such causes. So, Tedford created the Mayor's Youth Fund,

which distributes donated funds to children throughout the community.

He said money donated has sent youths to violin camp, leadership conferences, paid for athletic fees

and equipment and more.

“Mostly we've done things for kids who fall through the cracks,” Tedford said.

For information or make a donation to the Mayor's Youth Fund, contact City Hall at 423-3040.

A visit to Churchill Vineyards

Posted on August 1, 2012 by Bethany

I recently had the opportunity to visit Churchill Vineyards in Fallon, Nev. Nevada only has four wineries, and they’re spread throughout the state. That presents a challenge when you’re in the mood for winery-hopping, and they’re more than hop, skip and jump apart.

However, once I got to Churchill Vineyards, I decided there’s no reason to go anywhere else. I may just pitch a tent there and work for wine. The winery is beautiful, built on an old farmstead with acres and acres of grapevines, corn and other crops. Wine isn’t this farm’s only product, and they have to keep the other fields producing while tending to their grapes.

The vineyard is a family affair, currently owned and operated by Colby and Ashley Frey, who bought it from his parents, who bought it from his grandparents. The operation has grown with each generation, and today Colby Frey makes and bottles both white and red wines, and a selection of spirits, just for the fun of it. The farmhouse was designed by famed Nevada architect Frederick DeLongchamps (1882-1969), adding an expected touch of history and elegance in the rural community. (DeLongchamps designed many courthouses, schools, and other official buildings, but the presence of a DeLongchamps home in the middle of a farm is rare and beautiful!) Between the home and tasting room/winery is a large covered gazebo, built by Colby and his dad for Colby’s sister’s wedding. It’s amazing what a little ingenuity and hard work can accomplish!

Page 30: 2012 City Of Fallon Media Placements

A few things I like about the winery, and then I’ll get to the wine itself: The winery is in a large farming area, created by the historic Newlands Project, one of the first Bureau of Reclamation projects back in 1903. The mass irrigation project created a lush agricultural area in the otherwise arid Nevada desert. Even so, water is a hot commodity, and the Freys have been working on ways to produce more lucrative crops using less water. Their No. 1 goal is to conserve water, and they have found that grapes use only 10 percent of the water it takes to grow alfalfa and other grain crops. (Check out their agricultural goals here.)

They’re doing all sorts of other great environmental things, so please check out the website (and go visit in person!) to learn about ongoing issues with the U.S. Department of Fish and Wildlife Service. The winery is also active in farm-to-table events in the area, most notably the Tractors & Truffles event in September.

Now… the wine!

Churchill Vineyards specializes in white varietals, and is the only Nevada winery producing estate whites (meaning grown, produced and bottled in Nevada). They produce limited quantities (in the 120-250-case range for most of their wines), so you want to act fast. They can be purchased through Southern Wine and Spiritsor in a few dozen Nevada grocery stores and restaurants, including Whole Foods in Las Vegas and Reno.

I especially like the gerwurztraminer, which is floral and not overly sweet and quite unlike the traditional German gert. I’ve also recently become a fan of semillon-chardonnay blends, and Churchill has a fantastic blend that accentuates the butter in the chardonnay and the crisp pear in the semillon.

Churchill’s reds are made with grapes imported from California. The petite syrah is especially delicious.

Tastings at Churchill Vineyards are by appointment only, but don’t be scared off by that. It’s just a courtesy to the Freys, who live there and may be tending to other crops. Give them a call (775-423-4000) to schedule a tasting. The winery is just a few miles outside Fallon, which is itself about an hour from Reno. It’s out Highway 50, aka “The Loneliest Road in America,” and there’s lots of interesting things to do and see to make a full day-trip out of it. I recommend a quick jaunt to Grimes Point, where you can walk along a trail lined with ancient petroglyphs, and maybe even continue on to Sand Mountain and the ruins of a Pony Express Station. Be sure to look skyward once in a while – the Naval Air Station Fallon is nearby and is home to the “Topgun” fighter-jet training program – yes, THAT Topgun! “Tower, this is Ghost Rider requesting a fly-by.”
