Ron Perkins Retired High School Teacher and Entrepreneur

The 2012 Helen M. Free Award for Public Outreach is presented to Ron Perkins, a former high school teacher and retired entrepreneur, known to the public as an inspirational chemistry demonstrator, and credited by his peers in the education community for improving access to safe and scientifically accurate demonstration resources. Described as “a creative genius of presenting science to the public-at-large” and “a teaching giant… [who] inspires greatness,” Ron has presented over 800 chemistry demonstrations for audiences of all kinds over five decades. Ron was an early and significant advocate for safety in chemical demonstrations. Just as important, Ron has encouraged a generation of students, science teachers, and chemistry professionals to be passionate demonstrators and educators.

THE AMERICAN CHEMICAL SOCIETY

Improving people’s lives through the transforming power of chemistry

With more than 164,000 members, the American Chemical Society (ACS) is the world’s largest scientific society and one of the world’s leading sources of authoritative scien-tific information. A nonprofit organization, chartered by Congress, ACS is at the forefront of the evolving worldwide chemical enterprise and is the premier professional home for chemists, chemical engineers and those who study related fields around the globe.

The Society publishes numerous scientific journals and databases, convenes major research conferences and provides educational, science policy and career programs in chemistry. It also plays a leadership role in educating and communicating with public policy makers and the general public about the importance of chemistry in our lives, in such areas as designing new materials, improving public health, protecting the en-vironment and finding new energy sources for the future.
