2 boise rotary century scholars program • TUEsday, aPril 17, 2012
Welcome to the seventh annual Boise Ro-tary Century Scholars Program! This very spe-cial event is being sponsored by three of the Treasure Valley’s Rotary Clubs to recognize the exceptional value our entire community places on high academic achievement. Our celebration has also received strong sponsor-ship support from the community in the form of other grants and in-kind services.
During the evening of Tuesday, April 17th, 2012, our invited audience of hundreds will gather in the Jordan Ballroom at Boise State University to applaud the accomplish-ments of the top 100 graduating seniors, the Century Scholars, from Boise’s public and non-public high schools. “Cream of the crop” student achievers from Bishop Kelly, Boise, Borah, Capital, Frank Church, Riverstone and Timberline high schools will be profiled and honored by family, friends and representatives of our community’s business, government, civic, education and service sectors.
Each student being recognized has substantially exceeded the minimum program grade point average requirement of 3.75 and represents the best in music, the arts, service to community, athletics and academics in
each of our high schools. Our honorees also serve as role models for younger siblings and other students throughout Boise who look to them for leadership and guidance.
In addition to the 100 Boise Rotary Cen-tury Scholars being recognized, every student will be accompanied by an educator they have selected as having significant influence on their academic development during their school career. These influential teachers and counselors represent the many talented and dedicated educators throughout our com-munity who are committed to the ongoing success of all students. Each educator will be honored during the program along with the student who selected them.
For the program’s main speaker, the planning committee has once again identi-fied an individual who graduated from one of the Boise area high schools and went on to achieve success in education, career and life. Our 2012 program will feature Riverstone International School alumni Israel Carr to deliver the Distinguished Alumnus Address. You can read more about his accomplish-ments on page 15.
Some might ask, why would the Rotary
Clubs of Boise want to sponsor such an event as the Century Scholar Program? Our answer is quite simple. Our students are our future!
Encouraging them in their pursuit of excellence brings value and the promise of leadership to our community. This program provides us the opportunity to recognize the attainment of excellence by the top 100 of this class of Boise’s graduating seniors. It also allows us the opportunity to reward and honor representative educators who have played such a major role in the success of each of our students.
Rotary is all about the development of leadership and service above self. Boise’s Ro-tarians believe that the greatest value of the Century Scholars Program is in recognizing students who are striving to be leaders and also applaud the dedication of our educators and the critical role they play in helping stu-dents grow as learners and as people.
The well-being of our city, state, nation and world is dependent upon the minds and hearts of those we honor in this year’s Boise Rotary Century Scholars Program and those who will follow after them. From our vantage point, we are in good hands and our future
looks bright. Thanks for being a part of this memorable event.
Sincerely,
Beatrice BlackChair2012Boise Rotary Century Scholars Program

Rotary is...
In the development of the Boise Rotary Century Scholars Program, committee members and Boise Rotary leaders felt that an essential part of the evening program would be an address to student honorees, significant educators and guests by distinguished alumnus from one of the seven participating high schools. Who better to excite and inspire this prestigious group of students than an individual who also gradu-ated from high school in the City of Boise and went on to interesting and recognized success in life.
In this, the seventh year of the Boise Rotary Century Scholars Pro-gram, we are proud to announce the selection of Riverstone International School graduate Israel Carr (RIS – 2005) to deliver the Distinguished Alumnus Address.
isRAel cARR, 2012 & 2005
Israel Carr, a na-tive of Robie Creek, Idaho, attended Riv-erstone International School and was a member of the
first graduating class. While at Riverstone, he helped form the One Stone Foundation and was elected as the Foundation’s first Chairman and sat on the Board of Directors for his subsequent years of high school. Upon graduating from Riverstone, Israel went on to Middlebury College where he received his Bachelors of Liberal Arts degree. He graduated with honors in his major and played for the two-time national champion rugby team. After college, Israel taught in the U.S. for a year before going to the Republic of Madagas-car through the Peace Corps. There, he served as a teacher in the public school system for two years and led the Volunteer Action Committee for southern Madagascar.
As an advocate for education, he founded the Antanosy Aid Associa-tion, a nonprofit organization, which currently boasts over two hundred members who are working together to combat hunger, illiteracy and social injustice. The Association’s three-part mission statement “teach-ing those who want to learn, feeding those that cannot feed themselves,
and building community through social justice” has become the war cry of community-based aid efforts
in Fort Dauphin, Madagascar. Israel has recently returned to the U.S to continue his work as a teacher.

There are three types of exchanges:
• Long-term: This exchange is open to students ages 15-19 and usually lasts 10-12 months. Most students are 16-18 years old during their exchange year. The student lives with more than one family in the host country and is required to attend school. Long-term exchanges may be ex-tended to include part or all of the holiday/vacation periods immediately before or after the academic year.
• Short-term: This exchange is open to students ages 15-19 and ranges from several days to several weeks. It often takes place when school is not in session, and usually does not include an academic pro-gram. Short-term exchanges typically involve a Rotary district-organized exchange of a son or daughter between two families, but they may also take the form of international youth camps or tours that bring together students from many countries.
• New Generations: This special-ized short-term exchange lasts from three weeks to three months and is open to young people ages 18-25. This program may include a voca-tional element. Each district chooses the types of exchanges it participates in. Because each district administers its own Youth Exchange program, age requirements may differ from one district to another.
Globally minded
Rotary clubs are made up of volunteers who are involved in community service, emphasize high ethical standards, and work toward peace and understanding in the world. Over 1.2 million Rotarians in more than 32,000 clubs create the extensive network that provides support for Youth Exchange.
RYLARotary Youth Leadership Awards
(RYLA) is Rotary’s leadership training program for young people. RYLA par-ticipants in Idaho are students who will be Juniors or Seniors and is held at the College of Southern Idaho in Twin Falls in August of each year.
RYLA emphasizes leadership, citizenship, and personal growth, and aims to: • Demonstrate Rotary’s respect
and concern for youth • Provide an effective training experience for selected youth and potential leaders • Encourage leadership of youth by youth • Recognize publicly young people who are rendering service to their communities
ROTARY YOUTH ExCHANGEAs a Rotary Youth Exchange student, you’ll spend up to a year living
with host families and attending school in a different country. Whether you participate in Rotary’s long-term or short-term Youth
Exchange programs, you’ll learn a new way of living, a great deal
about yourself, and maybe even a new language. You’ll also be
an ambassador, teaching people you meet about your country,
culture, and ideas. You can help bring the world closer – and
make some good friends in the process. For over 75 years, students and host families have broad-
ened their horizons through Rotary Youth Exchange. More than 80 countries and over 8,000 students each year participate in
the program, which is administered at the regional level by Rotary districts and at the local level by Rotary clubs.
Ideal Youth Exchange candidates are young, open-minded individuals who demonstrate leadership qualities that will enable them to become excellent cultural ambassadors for their country and the Rotary club or District that supports them. Applicants are not required to be involved with Rotary in any way before applying. Children of Rotarians are welcome to par-ticipate but are not given any preference. Students with disabilities are encouraged to apply.
Rotary maintains a strong connection to youth and young adults. Besides Youth Exchange, Rotary clubs sponsor youth service clubs such as Interact, Rotaract, and RYLA and offer career development and mentoring programs.
Rotary is committed to creating and maintaining the safest possible environment for all participants in its programs, including Youth Exchange.
Low costs Rotary club volunteers administer the program at the local level, which helps keep costs low for students and their families. These volunteers often offer years of experience with students, host families, and fellow Rotarians who are involved in the program.
“What a wonderful opportunity I was given, from both the Rotary club and my family, to spread my
wings, taste the culture, and live the life.” – U.S. exchange student to Australia
Rotary’s programs for students and youth can change the lives of those who participate. Through these programs, young people can earn scholarships, travel on cultural exchanges, or help a community through a service project.
