2012 Hall of Fame Inductee

mike brown

Mike began his involvement as a donor in 1997. He has been a member of the Board of Trustees or Advisory Board since 2002, and he is a past member of the Operations Committee, which oversees House policies.

He and his wife Karen are major donors, and founding members of the Tanner Society. What began by supporting RMHC financially evolved into deepening levels of involvement. He doesn’t hesitate to “get his hands dirty.” Mike has painted areas in both Houses and helped with countless other volunteer tasks over the years. He exemplifies how donors can become actively engaged through service opportunities.

A successful entrepreneur, Mike asks his connections in the business community to support Ronald McDonald House Charities. He annually solicits peers, and encourages business associates to become involved in events. He has a friendly, long-standing rivalry with a fellow board member to recruit attendees to the RMHC Social every July. Through this effort alone, he has introduced dozens of new individuals to RMHC.

“Mike brings incredible enthusiasm to RMHC,” says Executive Director Tom Soma. “His excitement is infectious. He isn’t afraid to step up to the plate – whether financially, in person, or by encouraging others. He is a huge asset to RMHC, and has truly earned this honor.”

2012 Hall of Fame Inductee

David Stoller

A McDonald’s Owner/Operator from Southwest Washington, David got involved with RMHC in 2000, and joined the Board of Trustees in 2003. He became an officer and Secretary of the Board in 2006, serving through 2011 (when term limits necessitated his move to the Advisory Board). He remains on the Executive Committee and will return to the full board in 2013.

David is the longtime Chair of the Outreach Committee, which awards grants on behalf of RMHC to community health organizations that expand access to pediatric oral health care. The Outreach Program has awarded $1,121,002 over its history, supporting health care services to more than 135,000 children. David is also a member of RMHC’s Speakers Bureau, representing RMHC at community events, where he encourages others to become involved. As a longtime donor, David and his wife Pam are founding members of the Tanner Society.

“David’s leadership is critical to so many activities at RMHC,” says Executive Director Tom Soma. “Whether working with McDonald’s, on the Outreach Committee, or at the Board level, his gentle advocacy commands the respect and support of others. When David talks, people listen! I am grateful for his involvement, and pleased to see his efforts rewarded through induction into the Hall of Fame.”

While the Hall of Fame recognizes the contributions made

by individuals over the years, Partners of Distinction honors

the equally impressive contributions of RMHC’s corporate

partners. The 2012 recipient of this honor has been selected

for its sustained contributions of time, treasure and talent.

Partners of Distinction

The Portland Trail Blazers have been active donors to RMHC since 2001. Since 2003, they have been a consistent, high-level sponsor of RMHC’s signature events, with overall cash support totaling more than $70,000. In 2010, they hosted our Tanner Society event in the Lexus Club.

But the organization’s investment in RMHC goes well beyond event-related participation – their ongoing support directly impacts the families staying at Portland’s two Houses. They were among the first “class” of Room Adopters, and enthusiastically readopted their room at the East House in 2009. The Blazers also regularly make it possible for families to attend NBA games and other events being held in the Rose Garden – often in a luxury suite. And when there are opportunities, they bring current and retired players to the House to interact with families.

“The Trail Blazers have made a tremendous impact at RMHC,” says Executive Director Tom Soma. “The players obviously generate a lot of excitement whenever they visit. But members of the entire organization are engaged and involved in many other ways. They truly are committed to making things better in the community, and you can see the results at the Ronald McDonald House.”

share a night

Portland’s two Ronald McDonald Houses provide temporary lodging and a warm welcome to families who have traveled far from home to get medical attention for their children.

During their visit, guests stay in comfortable and lovingly decorated private rooms where they can get a peaceful night’s rest, knowing their children are near. By providing a setting in which families can connect with other families, and children can meet other children going through a similar ex-perience, our Houses ease the isolation of what can be a stressful and frightening time.

Located by Randall Children’s Hospital at Legacy Emanuel, the East Ronald McDonald House provides families with convenient access to the Children’s Hospital and the Kartini Clinic. The West Ronald McDonald House is located just steps away from OHSU, Doernbecher Children’s Hospital and Shriner’s Hospital for Children.

This evening, you will have a special opportunity to directly support the children and families at our two Houses, by bidding on a “Share a Night” package that everyone can afford. This gift is truly special because it means that families will continue to have a “home away from home” when they need it most.
