AT&T American Cup- USA Gymnastics
March 2012
My colleagues and I at AT&T are honored to be a part of the 2012 AT&T American
Cup and welcome you to what promises to be an exciting day showcasing the
very best of USA Gymnastics.
“Unleash Our Human Capabilities” is one of AT&T’s core values. As the first of four
artistic gymnastics all-around World Cups in 2012, the AT&T American Cup is a
powerful example of what is accomplished when a passion for high performance,
hard work and dedication are unleashed. It is no wonder this event has included
countless past Olympic medalists and doubtless many future ones. AT&T is proud
to be a part of this competition and of each athlete’s quest for the London 2012
Olympic Games. As you enjoy the day, please visit us at att.net/teamusa to get behind-the-scenes
footage of your favorite athletes unleashing their capabilities. I also invite you to
visit the AT&T booth located here in Madison Square Garden where you can
experience the latest from AT&T and enjoy interactive experiences such as:
• Opportunity to receive autographs from Olympians
• Pose for commemorative photos
• Participate in trivia with iconic Olympic and USA Gymnastic symbols
As we begin our sixth year of supporting USA Gymnastics, we join you in
applauding the elite athletes here today and congratulate them on all they have
accomplished. Sincerely,
Mark Wright Vice President, AT&T Media & Sponsorships

Dear Gymnastics Fans:
Welcome to the 2012 AT&T American Cup, a FIG World Cup event. This competition
is one of the most prestigious gymnastics invitationals in the world. The event
began in 1976 right here in Madison Square Garden to celebrate the United States
Bicentennial and has a rich history that includes the sport’s biggest names among its
champions.
The AT&T American Cup has been a springboard to success for many great
gymnasts who went on to win World and Olympic medals. Bart Conner and Nadia
Comaneci were the event’s inaugural champions, followed by the likes of Mary Lou
Retton, Kurt Thomas, Tim Daggett, Kim Zmeskal, Shannon Miller, Dominique Dawes,
Kerri Strug, Paul Hamm, Carly Patterson, Shawn Johnson, Jonathan Horton and
Nastia Liukin - just to name a few.
For the third consecutive year, the Nastia Liukin Cup will take place on Friday,
March 2, the evening prior to the AT&T American Cup and on the same
podium. Teaming up with our 2008 Olympic all-around champion Nastia Liukin
allows us to provide a competition for the country’s top rising athletes.
We are proud to host both of these competitions on back-to-back days at Madison
Square Garden in New York City.
We want to welcome our international guests and thank our corporate partners for
their participation and support of the AT&T American Cup, especially AT&T for being
the title sponsor of this great event. In addition, we want to express our thanks to
Madison Square Garden and the gymnastics clubs and volunteers who donated their
time to make this weekend a success.
Please join us in saluting the athletes as they begin their competition on this great
stage in New York City!

BeginningsThe current Garden – located between 31st and 33rd Streets and
Seventh and Eighth Avenues on Manhattan’s West Side – is the fourth building (third site) to be named Madison Square Garden.
Garden I was located at Madison Square: 26th Street and Madi-son Avenue. It was originally opened in 1874 (at a cost of $35,000) by the legendary P.T. Barnum as “Barnum’s Monster Classical and Geological Hippodrome.” However, it was soon renamed “Gilmore’s Garden” when the lease was auctioned off to bandmaster Patrick S. Gilmore (the term “Garden” was used often during this period to denote a place of public gathering and entertainment).
Garden II was constructed on the site of Garden I, opening on Jun. 16, 1890 at a cost of $1.5 million. It contained an 8,000-seat main arena, 1,500-seat concert hall, 1,200-seat theatre and the world’s largest indoor swimming pool. The Spanish Renaissance-style structure was topped by its most famous feature: a 32-story tower and roof garden atop which stood Augustus Saint-Gauden’s gold statue of Diana, Goddess of the Hunt.
Garden III - the “Old Garden” - was built in just 249 days at 49th Street and Eighth Avenue under the watchful eyes of promoter Tex Rickard and architect Thomas Lamb. The fabled 18,000-seat arena, built at a cost of $5.6 million, opened with a six-day bicycle race on Nov. 24, 1925, and for 43 years was America’s premier sports and entertainment showplace.
Garden IV – on Nov. 3, 1960, Garden president Irving Mitchell Felt announced plans for a new Madison Square Garden to eventu-ally be built at 33rd Street between Seventh and Eighth Avenues, atop Pennsylvania Station.
Garden IV opened as a glittering sports and entertainment showplace, with its distinctive circular, cable-suspended roof above the 19,000-seat arena, its 5,000-seat Felt Forum, 48-lane Bowling Center, 500-seat cinema, Hall of Fame Club, National Art Museum of Sport, 50,000-square foot Exposition Rotunda and 29-story of-
fice building (Two Penn Plaza) attached by a pedestrian mall. The first element of the New Garden complex to open its doors
was the Bowling Center, on Oct. 30, 1967. On Nov. 26, 1967, the Felt Forum opened with a performance of the Welsh and Scots Guards.
The “New Garden” itself officially opened on Feb. 11, 1968, when Bob Hope and Bing Crosby hosted “The Night of the Cen-tury,” a star-studded salute to the USO.
And A New Era Dawns...This year marks another historic event at Madison Square
Garden as work commenced on the Transformation of the Garden. The comprehensive, top-to-bottom Transformation will provide a significantly enhanced experience for cus-tomers, athletes, entertainers, suite holders and marketing partners, from the first row to the last. The project involves over 2.6 million man hours of union labor, the equivalent of at least 1,300 full-time jobs, creating as many as 3,700 union construction jobs. It will also restore The Garden’s world famous ceiling and pay homage to the buildings storied history.

Fund2008 Olympic all-around champion Nastia Liukin, USA Gymnastics and the National Gymnastics Foundation have teamed up to support the achievements of athletes and gymnastics clubs promoting continued athletic success for gymnasts. Goals of the Nastia Liukin Fund include partnerships with fitness-orientated programs for young people and encouraging clubs that aid athletes who need financial assistance to remain or become involved in gymnastics.
“Gymnastics has given me the opportunity to achieve my dreams,” said Liukin. “Now, I want to help others, and contribute back to the gymnastics community. The Nastia Liukin Fund is designed for this purpose.”
Funds are intended to reach as many gymnastics participants as possible and to achieve a great outcome for the surrounding area. A committee of five individuals, including Nastia Liukin, will select recipients annually and allocate funds to organizations or clubs as deemed appropriate.
If you would like to donate to the Nastia Liukin Fund or recieve more information, please visit www.usagym.org/foundation.

The International Gymnastics Federation’s (FIG) scoring system for men’s and women’s gymnastics was instituted in January 2006 and incorporates credit for the routine’s content, difficulty and execu-tion, as well as artistry for the women. In the U.S., this system is used at all elite level events.
The FIG’s scoring system is governed by the Code of Points, which is revised for each quadrennium through re-valuing skills and adjusting individual apparatus requirements. Although the basic process is the same for men and women, some differences exist between the two. The men’s and women’s gymnastics scoring system is similar to those used in rhythmic gymnastics, trampoline and tumbling, and acrobatic gymnastics.
Under the current system, a gymnast’s total score includes values for both the routine’s content and his/her execution. Basically, the scoring procedure adds the Difficulty Score, which includes difficulty value for skills, connection value and element group/compositional requirements, to the Execution Score, which encompasses execu-tion and technique — and for women, artistry on the balance beam and floor exercise — to determine a gymnast’s total score. Scores no longer have a maximum value of 10.
DIFFICULTY SCORE: difficulty and technical content. The Difficulty Score includes credit for the specified number of skills performed in the routine, along with connection value (credit for con-necting high-level skills) and element group/compositional require-ments. The men use the term element group requirements, which are the basic categories of skills/elements that must be included in a routine. The women use composition instead of element group to describe this requirement. The element group/compositional require-ments vary by apparatus. This score is determined by the D (Diffi-culty) Panel, which is a two-person panel.
THE DIFFICULTY VALUE is determined by totaling values for the most difficult skills — eight for women and 10 for men, including the dismount. Each skill has a set difficulty value, as outlined in the Code of Points, and are divided into seven classifications. The difficulty value of a skill or element is not recognized if it fails to meet its tech-nical requirements. Also, credit is only given once for a skill. For the women, they must perform a minimum of three dance elements and
a maximum of five acrobatic elements in their balance beam and floor exercise routines.
CONNECTION VALUE is awarded when specific skills or skill types are executed successfully in succession. The women can earn connection values for beam, uneven bars and floor, while the men can earn it for floor and horizontal bar. For men and women, each connec-tion value is either 0.1 or 0.2 points. No connection value is awarded if the gymnast falls.
ELEMENT GROUP/COMPOSITIONAL REQUIREMENTS are the basic skills or elements that must be included in each routine and vary by apparatus. This area is similar to the special requirements in the past. If all five requirements are included, a maximum of 2.5 points is awarded.
Each judge on the D Panel independently reaches his/her Difficulty Score and then the two compare and reach a consensus.
After the score has been posted, a coach may inquire about the Difficulty Score, first verbally and then in writing. An inquiry may be resolved by using video review. The initial inquiry must be made prior to the completion of the next gymnast’s routine. The written inquiry must be submitted before the end of the rotation, and the Superior Jury reviews the inquiry. At FIG events, a fee is assessed for filing an inquiry; it is returned if the inquiry is upheld.
EXECUTION SCORE: Execution and technique (plus artistry on beam and floor for women). The Execution Score, determined by a six-person E Panel, now begins at 10 and deductions are made for errors and faults in technique, execution and artistry. Each judge independently determines his/her score. The highest and lowest scores are dropped, and the gymnast’s Execution Score is the average of the remaining four judges’ scores. Deductions for neutral errors are subtracted from the sum of the Difficulty and Execution Scores.
THE DEDUCTIONS for various errors range from 0.1 point for a small error to 1 point for a fall. Neutral deductions include those for stepping out of bounds or violating time requirements, as well as attire or podium violations. Inquiries are not allowed on the Execution Score.
TOTAL SCORE. The gymnast’s final score is the total of the Dif-ficulty and Execution Scores less any deductions for neutral errors.
