Sinceitsfoundingin1935-morethan75yearsago-ArmstrongAtlanticStateUniversityhascontinuedtodeveloptomeettheSavannah
community’s educational needs. From its first loca-tioninArmstrongHouseindowntownSavannahtoitscurrenthomeonascenic268-acrelotoffofAbercorn,the university has become one of the finest educational institutionsintheSoutheasternUnitedStates.Lastyear,Armstrongcelebratedits75thanniversaryasapremierinstitutionofhighereducationintheCoastalEmpire. ArmstrongJuniorCollegewasestablishedbytheMayor of Savannah and other public officials in 1935. HousedinthebeautifulandhistoricArmstrongHouse,agifttothecityfromthefamilyofGeorgeF.Arm-strong,ArmstrongJuniorCollegegrewovertheyearstooccupyeightadditionalbuildingsintheForsythParkandMon-tereySquareareas. In1959,asArmstrongCollegeofSavannah,itbecameatwo-yearunitoftheUniversitySystem.TheBoardofRegentsconferredfour-yearstatusonArmstrongin1964andthecollegemovedtoa250-acrelocation,agiftfromDonaldLivingstonandtheMillsB.LaneFoundation,inDecemberof1965.AdditionalbuildingsjoinedtheeightoriginalstructuresasArmstrongaddedprofessionalandgraduateprogramsandtripledinsize. InJulyof1996,theBoardofRegentsvotedtorenamethecol-lege to Armstrong Atlantic State University to reflect its mission and identity.Theuniversity’sreputationofexcellenceisstillevidentinitsdedicationtostudents,withasupportiveenvironment. ArmstrongAtlanticStateUniversitywasfullyaccreditedasaseniorinstitutionbytheSouthernAssociationofCollegesandSchoolsinDecember,1968,withaccreditationretroactivetoJanuary1,1968,andwaslastreaccreditedinDecember,2002. The university offers more than seventy-five academic programs andmajorsintheCollegeofArtsandSciences,CollegeofHealth
Professions,CollegeofEducationandSchoolofComput-ing.Theacademiccommunityincludesapproximately7,650studentsandmorethan400facultymembers.Enrollmenthasmorethandoubledinthelast20years,from3,700studentsin1990toitscurrentnumber. Acrosscampus,evidenceoftheuniversity’sgrowthcanbefoundinitsfacilities.Recentlycompletedprojectsincludethe$31millionWindwardCommons,a567-bed,freshman-dedicatedresidencehallcompletedoverthesummer,whichbringsthenumberofstudentslivingoncampustomorethan1,400,andthenew$16million,60,180square-footArmstrongStudentUnionthatwasbuiltentirelythroughstudentfeesandopenedinfallof2010.ConstructionbeganthissummeronanewLearningCommonsthatisslatedtoopeninFallof2013. TheathleticdepartmentofArmstrongAtlanticStateUni-versityishousedintheArmstrongSportsCenter,completedin 1995. The Sports Center includes offices for the physical educationdepartment,trainingroomandweightroomareas,basketball courts, indoor track and offices for coaches and athleticdepartmentpersonnel.ThebuildingplayedhosttothePeachBeltConference’sbasketballtournamentin1998and1999andhostsseveralin-seasontournamentseachyear.Construction of a women’s fieldhouse for soccer and softball wascompletedinthespringof2007. Armstrongsponsors11intercollegiatesportsandisachartermemberofthePeachBeltConference,formedin1991.Women’ssoccerandwomen’sgolfdebutedin2005andmen’scrosscountrywasreinstatedin2009,joiningmen’sandwomen’sbasketball,volleyball,baseball,men’sandwomen’stennis,men’sgolfandsoftballassportsthatArmstrongspon-sors.In2011-12,Armstrongmen’sandwomen’stennisteamscapturedNCAADivisionIINationalChampionships,givingthe Pirates seven national championships in the last five years. Continuingamissionbegunin1935,ArmstrongAtlanticStateUniversitytodayservesarichgamutoftraditionalandnon-traditionalstudents.Forty-threepercentofArmstrong’sstudentbodyarefromtheSavannah-Chathamarea,whileotherscomefromaroundthestate,nationandworld.AllhavecometoSavannahtoexperienceandthriveonthecampusofoneofthefastestdevelopinghigherlearninginstitutionsinthenation-tobeapartofArmstrongAtlanticStateUniversity.

LisaM.SweanybeginshersecondseasonasDirectorofAthleticsatArmstrongAtlanticStateUniversityforthe2012-13academicyear. During her first year at the helm of the Armstrong athletic department, the Pirates experiencedunprecedentedsuccess,winningaleague-recordsevenPeachBeltConfer-encechampionshipsandcapturingtheCommissioner’sCup,theleague’sall-sportstrophy for the first time in school history. The Pirates also added their ninth and 10th NCAADIINationalChampionshipsinmen’sandwomen’stennis,respectively,attheDIISpringSportsFestivalinLouisville. SweanyjoinedArmstronginJulyof2011,comingfromfellowNCAADivisionIIschoolGrandValleyState,wheresheservedasassistantADandthenseniorassociateADfortenyears.WiththeLakers,Sweanywasresponsibleforbudget,personnelandfacilitiesmanagement.Herotherdutiesincludeddirectsupervisionofsevencoaches,overseeinggameandeventoperations,aswellasmanagementofallathleticspersonnel.Inaddition,Sweanycoordinatedallaspectsofcomplianceandeligibilityformorethan500studentathletes. PriortojoiningGVSU,sheservedatTri-StateUniversityinAngola,Indiana,startingin1995asathleticsfacilitiesdirector.Dur-ing her five-year stint at Tri-State, she served in various capacities of increasing responsibility, including assistant basketball coach, headcoachofsoftballandassociateathleticsdirector,apositionedshewasnamedtoinMarch1995. SweanyisamemberoftheNationalAssociationofCollegiateWomenAthleticsAdministratorsandtheNationalAssociationofCollegiateDirectorsofAthletics,aswellasthepresidentoftheCEFMA(CollegiateEventandFacilityManagementAssociation)for2012-13.From2010,sheservedaschairoftheNCAAMidwestRegionalforSoftball,helpingtooverseerankingsintheregion. Sheholdsamaster’sdegreeinphysicaleducationwithaconcentrationinsportsmanagementfromBallStateUniversityinMun-cie,Indianaandabachelor’sdegreewithhonorsinbusinessadministrationwithaconcentrationinaccountingfromTri-StateUniver-sityinAngola,Indiana.

Dr.LindaM.BleickenjoinedArmstrongin2009afterservingatGeorgiaSouthernfor 19 years. She is the seventh Armstrong president and the first woman to lead the insti-tutionsincetheestablishmentofArmstrongJuniorCollegein1935. AwomanwithdeeprootsinIowafarmcountry,BleickenbeganhercareeratGeor-giaSouthernasanassistantprofessorofmanagementin1990.Overthefollowingyearsshewouldserveasactingchairofthedepartmentofmanagement,associatedeanoftheCollegeofBusinessAdministration,vicepresidentforstudentaffairs,actingprovostandvicepresidentforacademicaffairsandlastlyprovost,apositionsheheldsince2005. AmarketingmajorfromGeorgiaStateUniversitywhograduatedmagnacumlaude,Bleicken’sexperiencesinthebusinessarenaincludeaforayintorealestateinAtlantaasownerandmanagerofresidentialpropertiesandservingasasalesrepresentativeforInnerfaceInternational.ShealsospenttwoyearsinmarketingresearchforBellSouthandBrittainAssociates,bothinAtlanta. Itwasherexperiencesinmarketingresearchthatledherbacktohighereducation.In1987,shechosetocontinuehereducationinauniversitycampus,thistimeasateachinginstructoratheralmamater,GeorgiaStateUniversity.Threeyearslatersheearnedheracademiccredentials,amaster’sandPh.D.inmanagement,onceagainfromGeorgiaState. Along-timeresidentofSavannah—shecommutedtoGeorgiaSouthernallthoseyears—BleickenknowsandcaresdeeplyaboutSavannahandtheCoastalGeorgiaregion.ShehasservedontheOssabawIslandFoundationBoardsince2007andbeeninvolvedwiththeSavannahDowntownNeighborhoodAssociation.

Armstrong’s training room, part of the Armstrong Sports Center, sits adjacent to the fitness center and acrossthehallfromthePiratelockerrooms.Theroomoffersthemostmodernandadvancedequipmenttohelpplayersdealwithinjuriesandrehabilitation.

The2011seasonwasahistoriconeforthePiratesastheybegantheyearwithaschool-andPeachBeltConference-record31matchwinstreak.Armstrongwent36-3overall,tyingaschoolrecordforwinsinaseason,whilecapturingthePeachBeltCon-ferenceregularseasontitleandmakinganappearanceintheNCAASoutheastRegion.PBC Player of the Year Brittany Wolf became Armstrong’s first volleyball player named toanAVCAAll-Americanteamwhilefourotherplayers-BrendyceBudd,JessicaSanta-niello,LeiaPittmanandAshleySeal-earnedAll-PBCandAll-Regionhonors. In2010,thePiratesreeledoff12winsintheirlast14regularseasonmatchestoearnanat-largeberthintotheNCAAChampionships,whilealsoadvancingtothePeachBeltConference tournament title match. The previous year, Armstrong finished second in the PBCandadvancedtotheNCAAChampionshipsagain. InhisdebutseasonwiththePiratesin2008,Armstrongwent28-7,capturingthePeachBeltregularseasonandtournamenttitlesto earn a berth in the NCAA Championships for the first time since 2004. The Pirates defeated Lander, Lincoln Memorial and Catawba tocapturetheSoutheastRegiontitleandadvancetotheNCAADIIEliteEight. CondonjoinedthePiratesfromfellowPeachBeltConferenceschoolUSCAiken,whereheservedasthePacers’headvolleyballcoachforthepasteightseasons,compilinga161-100recordasthewinningestcoachinthatschool’shistory. ThePeachBeltConference’sCoachoftheYearin2006,thePacersunderCondoncollectedback-to-backPeachBeltregularseason and tournament titles in 2006 and 2007. The titles were the first for the Pacer program since 1995. USC Aiken also made its first-ever appearances in the NCAA Championships in both seasons, advancing to the NCAA South Regional. Condon became USC Aiken’s ninth head coach in 2000 and immediately enjoyed success as he took a squad that had finished 11-18 in the previous season and directed them to a 24-10 overall record and a 9-5 conference mark, finishing third in the PBC. WhileatUSCAiken,CondoncoachedoneCapitalOne/CoSIDAAll-AmericanandPBCPlayeroftheYear(MandyGerolstein),onePBCFreshmanoftheYear(AmyLong),13All-PBCperformersand20PBCPlayeroftheWeekhonorees. FourtimesCondondirectedthePacersto20-winseasonswhileatUSCAikenandheleavestheschoolhavingwon40ofhislast50matchesoverthelasttwoseasons. PriortotakingovertheUSCAikenprogram,CondonservedasanassistantcoachatEmporiaState(Kan.)forfourseasons.Whileat Emporia State, his teams finished among the top 12 in the nation in hitting percentage in three of the four years he was there. Condonisa1996graduateofClemson,earninghisbachelor’sofsciencedegreeinmanagement.HealsocompetedontheClem-sonmen’sclubvolleyballsquad.Hereceivedhismaster’sdegreeinbusinessadministrationfromEmporiaStatein1999. ArbogastjoinedthePiratesin2011fromtheUniversityofSouthFlorida,whereshewas a four-year standout for the Bulls from 2006-2009. A first-team All-Big East Con-ferencemiddlehitterandAVCAAll-NortheastRegionperformerasasenior,Arbogastfinished her four-year career at USF as the school’s fourth all-time leading blocker with 430totalblocksandsecondall-timeleaderinblockassistswith380.Shehit.326asaseniorandledtheBigEastinblocking,averaging1.49blockspersetandrankingamongtheTop10nationally. AfterhertimewiththeBulls,ArbogastplayedprofessionallyinItalyforoneseasonbeforereturningtothestates.
