LETTER FROMOUR LEADERSHIP
1
Dear friend,
During the fiscal year of 2012, LSW continued to build on our past success. We increased the number of students in our three core programs by over 370 and the number of tutors by over 180. Our students' progress and outstanding learning achievements reflect another year of unparalleled commitment to adult basic education. This was made possible through the coordination and cooperation of many elements: meeting our financial goals, gaining strong community support and partnerships, and enabling our students and tutors to continue the success of our unique one-on-one all-volunteer tutor model.
We hope you will enjoy our 2012 annual report. Thank you for all of your support and contributions. We hope you will visit us to see how our programs benefit the students, both personally and professionally, and how the reach of their accomplishments will extend well into the community.
Kind regards, Kim Metcalf-Kupres2012 Board President

ONE-ON-ONE TEACHING MODELAll of our students benefit from individualized instruction from a single
volunteer tutor in every study session to ensure the highest success.
ADULT BASIC EDUCATION / READING (ABE)presents research-based multisensory phonics instruction focused on
word structure and analysis to improve reading and spelling skills.
Additionally, a variety of curricula are offered to improve comprehen-
sion and language skills to help ensure student success prior to
transitioning to the GED program.
GENERAL EDUCATIONAL DEVELOPMENT (GED)offers instruction for students seeking a GED credential. GED
students prepare for tests in each of the five subject areas - reading,
writing, math, science and social studies.
ENGLISH AS A SECOND LANGUAGE (ESL)delivers individualized English language instruction for students from
over 80 world language backgrounds with a curriculum that empha-
sizes reading, writing, vocabulary development, and experiential
learning opportunities to strengthen conversational and “survival
English” skills.
WORKFORCE READINESS INITIATIVEEach program incorporates career preparation workshops and
computer training sessions that broaden our students education with
technology and communication based life-skills.
ACADEMICPROGRAMS
3
We served students from 52 countries
around the world.
Our dedicated volunteers granted us
4,816 tutoring sessions.
20% of our GED students
graduated with honors.
We introduced a civics-based Community
Engagement component to our English as a
Second Language program with funding from
the Wisconsin Technical College System .

ADULT BASIC EDUCATION / READING
“I’m amazed at how much my life has changed”
2012 STUDENTOF INSPIRATION
Bennie BurdetteBennie grew up working on a farm to support his family and nine younger siblings. Though he was grateful for the work ethic he learned, he envied their opportunities for schooling. He came to Wisconsin at 15 and his well-meaning aunt enrolled him in school. Bennie was excited to learn, but disheartened to be placed in a grade with much younger kids. Following an unsuccessful attempt to sneak into high school, he found a job in a foundry where he worked for over 16 years. When a promotion revealed his illiteracy, he lost his job and succumbed to alcohol and drug addiction. After getting clean, Bennie knew it was time to pursue his dream. “Deep down in my heart,” says Bennie, “I wanted to learn to read and write. That was my goal.” Bennie began work in LSW’s phonics program in 2008. Since then, Bennie has been one of the most dedicated and diligent students, rarely missing a class despite numerous health complications. After several years of hard work and perseverance, Bennie is nearing completion of the phonics program and will transition to pre-GED studies in early 2013. Now that he can read and write, Bennie’s next goal is attaining a GED. “I’m amazed at how much my life has changed,” says Bennie, noting he has confidence and self-esteem that he never had before. When asked about his determination, he credits his tutors: “They make me want to be here.” The truth is students like Bennie inspire all of us – staff, tutors, and students alike – to keep up our good work.

Shortly after Jessica began working on her GED at LSW, her father was diagnosed with terminal brain cancer. A single mom with three children, Jessica began working additional hours at the family business to cover for her sister who took their dad to chemotherapy treatments. Despite her father’s illness, several “minor” heart attacks suffered by her mother, and a dramatically increased workload, Jessica persevered, finding time when she could to continue her studies.
Despite the very serious and stressful circumstances of her life, she earned the nickname “Sparkles” due to her bright, friendly personality and her quick smile. Jessica’s determination and hard work paid off. Not only did she complete her GED, she was recognized as an honors graduate for her exceptionally high test scores at the city-wide commencement ceremony. Jessica plans to go on to college.
GED PREPARATION
2012 STUDENTOF INSPIRATION
For Moussa Kone, life in the Ivory Coast was marked by the horror of war. Rebels murdered his father and sister when he was just a young man. Separated from his remaining family members and enslaved by militants, Moussa faced certain death. After months in captivity, he fled while gathering firewood at night, trudging 20km through the bush to the Guinea border. Living in a refugee camp, Moussa struggled to cope with the trauma of the war and the loss of his family. While saving every Guinea Franc he earned, he overcame these challenges and devoted his efforts to reuniting with his remaining family.
Even after arriving in the United States, Moussa never gave up his dream of finding his family. Learning English was the first step towards locating them. Moussa enrolled at Literacy Services unable to speak or read any English. Three years later, Moussa speaks English fluently and aspires to complete his GED. He dedicates his time to reading comprehension, essay writing, and computer skills. Eventually, Moussa will locate his family, and he knows education is the road that will lead him back to them.

2012 TUTOROF INSPIRATION
“communication is one of the taprootsof human existence”
An enthusiastic and warm-hearted man, Patrick Crimmings spends his mornings tutoring in the English as a Second Language (ESL) program at Literacy Services. Over the past 4 years, Patrick has proven himself a dependable, supportive, and knowledgeable tutor, dutifully explaining the intricacies of English to his students. Before retirement, Patrick was an entrepreneur and small-business owner where he learned the importance of communication. In retirement, his business experience has motivated him to pass on his talent for clear communication.
“Tutoring the students challenges me regularly to learn new ways of saying things so that they can understand what they need to know.” He believes that “communication is one of the taproots of human existence,” and tutoring ESL students helps them “nurture that root.” Beyond his skillful instruction, Patrick’s cheerful and motivating personality makes him highly sought after by students, other tutors, and program staff. His aptitude for friendly and reflective conversa-tion builds our community and provides an atmosphere for students that is safe and challenging.

COMMUNITY PARTNERS
We are proud to announce that we are now an Agency Partner with United Way of Greater Milwaukee! It is an honor and a privilege to join forces with the great people of United Way, who have proven to be a tremendous asset with volunteer recruitment, supply drives, fund-raising and creating awareness of our mission.
LSW continues to craft lasting partnerships among local organiza-tions to further the potential of our students and programs. Generous funding and volunteer support from companies like JPMorgan Chase, Johnson Controls, ManpowerGroup, Northwestern Mutual, Robert W. Baird, BMO Harris, and We Energies allow us to better prepare our students for success with additional skills training in computer literacy and workforce readiness.
VOLUNTEER TUTORS
Since its inception in 1965, LSW has continued to provide a custom-ized approach to teaching each student with our one-on-one tutoring model. We know the bond created between a tutor and student fosters comfort, confidence, growth and success within all the individuals we serve. About 400 volunteer tutors dedicated their time and patience to teach with us in 2012.
Our tutors are as varied as our students. The community within our walls is a lively, eclectic mix of all ages, races, creeds and personali-ties. It is a melting pot of knowledge where tutors stand to learn as much as our students. The unique learning atmosphere welcomes many of our volunteers back, year after year. We are thankful for every hour that our tutors donate to empower the lives of others. It is a selfless gift that is nothing short of heroic.
