The Jackson Hole Land Trust is a private, non-profit organization that was established in

1980 to preserve open space and the critical wildlife habitat, magnificent scenic vistas,

and historic ranching heritage of Jackson Hole. By working cooperatively with the owners

of the area’s privately owned open lands, the Jackson Hole Land Trust has ensured the permanent protection of over 23,000 acres in and

around Jackson Hole and the Greater Yellowstone Area.

Dear Friends,

Winter in years past has been a quieter time at the Jackson Hole Land Trust, a time for

reflection and preparation for the upcoming year that mirrors the quietness of the natural

world outside. But this winter, reflection has been replaced instead with excitement and

activity, as the projects that we’ve worked on in the 2012 fiscal year continue to have

impact and visibility in our community, and many projects initiated in 2012 have already

come to completion.

Our Annual Report highlights the work of each of our departments in the past fiscal year –

October 1st, 2011 through September 30th, 2012. In our 2012 fiscal year, as we do each year, we

continued to steward our conservation properties through visits with landowners and ranch

managers on all of our protected properties as part of our annual monitoring program. We

placed 4 new properties under permanent protection: River Springs – Rendezvous Park,

River Rock Ranch, Flat Creek Corridor, and Snake River Corridor Ranch – each unique in

their own way, each conserving a valuable piece of remaining open space in the valley

through unique partnerships.

While the end result of our work is land conservation and stewardship in perpetuity, each

step along the way is filled with the incredible people that share our passion for this place –

this valley. The people and partners that we have the privilege of interacting with throughout

the year, through projects, properties, events, and other outreach initiatives, inspire

and sustain our board and staff just as much as the beautiful landscapes around us.

A jovial conversation after a monitoring visit, a forward-thinking new collaboration,

a new connection with a supporter at an event, a letter to the editor on our behalf, a

dependable annual fund donation, a hand-written note or email – we cherish these things

and are incredibly grateful for your thoughtful support in our work. Your enduring

commitment to land conservation enables us to operate successfully, day after day, year

after year, generation after generation – and inspires us to do all we can to find new

opportunities and steward the amazing properties in and around Jackson Hole that we’ve

protected since our first conservation easement over 30 years ago. Thank you for believing in

the work we do to keep this Forever Our Valley.

Sincerely,

Laurie Andrews Pete LawtonExecutive Director Board President

Since our founding in 1980, the Jackson

Hole Land Trust has protected over 23,000

acres of land through over 200 conservation

easements that preserve open space and

the scenic, ranching, and wildlife values

of Jackson Hole and Western Wyoming

landscapes. Each year, we work with private

landowners to protect parcels, large and

small, on the 20,000 acres of character-defining

lands in Teton County still in need of protection,

and in the Wind River Program area.

Our land protection work in the valley

continues to be both dynamic and strategic –

in recognition that each property and

landowner that we work with is unique, and

the terms of the easements that we create

together are unique as well. In fiscal year 2012,

we conserved four new properties totaling 242 acres that are each

different and incredibly valuable in their

own way – one in partnership with a private

foundation, one in partnership with local

government, and two in partnership with

private landowners. Each of these conservation

successes were made possible by our over 30

years of experience working in the valley, the

leadership of our board and staff, and the

guidance of our strategic plan. Together, they

accomplish land protection for our mission-

based conservation values of critical wildlife

habitat, magnificent scenic vistas, and

historic ranching heritage, as well as our

strategic plan directive to protect properties

of high community value that allow the public

to directly connect with our work.

The Path Ahead

Looking ahead to fiscal year 2013, we have

our sights set on 12 active protection projects representing over 10,000 acres in Jackson Hole and the Wind River

Valley. We continue to assess land conservation

priorities and seek to partner with the owners

of remaining important open lands in these

areas. Through these partnerships, we work to

find solutions that meet both parties’ needs -

solutions that often require persistence,

expertise, and financial resources.

The East Gros Ventre Butte project is an

exemplary case in which many pieces are

coming together to secure permanent

protection for a landscape-scale expanse

of open space and sage grouse habitat. The

butte, which rises above the National Museum

of Wildlife Art, across Highway 89 from the

National Elk Refuge, provides important habitat

for sage grouse, a candidate for protection

under the Endangered Species Act, and other

native wildlife that would be threatened

by the extensive network of homesites and

roads proposed for its entire eastern slope.

The relationships that we have cultivated

with private landowners, federal and state

agencies, and private supporters to protect

over 400 acres of the butte have led us to

close in on the completion of the first phase

of this project, totaling 181 acres, in the early

part of FY 2013. With more projects expected

to close this fiscal year and many more in the

works, the success of these protection projects

are made possible by your support.

RIVER ROCK RANCHIn December 2011, we accepted a 19-acre conservation

easement along the Snake River north of Jackson. The

parcel consists of high-quality riparian habitat, shaded

by cottonwood and spruce trees, that is home to a multitude

of wildlife species including Snake River fine-spotted

cutthroat trout, bald eagles, black bear, trumpeter swans,

and boreal toads. A spring creek also flows through the

property, supporting a population of cutthroat trout and

their spawning grounds. The donated easement is the

fourth contiguous parcel to be placed under permanent

protection at the River Rock Ranch.

FLAT CREEK CORRIDOR PHASE IIThe second phase of the Flat Creek Corridor project was

completed in December 2011, conserving an additional 2

acres along Flat Creek important to native cutthroat trout,

mule deer, and moose, and protecting a beloved trail system

on the northwest slope of Snow King Mountain. When

all phases are complete, 40 acres in total will be owned

by the Town of Jackson and protected by a Land Trust

conservation easement. This is the second property

that we have protected in collaboration with the Town,

adjacent to the 41-acre Karns Meadow property protected

in 2003 by this same collaboration. Like Karns Meadow,

it allows for and permanently protects public access to

community trails in the heart of town.

SNAKE RIVER CORRIDOR RANCHIn August, we accepted a donated conservation easement

that permanently protects 181 acres along a free-flowing

stretch of the Snake River. The property, located north

of Jackson, represents a relatively pristine section of the

Snake River riparian corridor important to a host of wildlife

species including migratory birds, mule deer, moose, bears,

mountain lions, Snake River fine-spotted cutthroat trout,

spotted frogs, and boreal toads. It is a key mating, staging,

and migration area for elk, with up to 10% of the elk that

winter on the National Elk Refuge crossing the Snake River

at this location en route to the eastern slopes of the Tetons.

“R” PARK

RIVER SPRINGS – RENDEZVOUS PARK In December 2011, we partnered with The LOR Foundation to

acquire this 40-acre property, centrally located between

Jackson, Wilson, and Teton Village along the Snake River, and

placed it under the ownership of a new, jointly created non-profit,

the Rendezvous Lands Conservancy. The land deal’s success

was made possible by this creative new partnership, including

timely assistance from The Conservation Fund – and the

resounding community support for a new effort following

our previous attempt to purchase the property in 2009, in

which we were outbid by another party. Located across from

the Emily’s Pond recreational area, River Springs contains

the Wilson Boat Launch and a portion of the Snake River

levee trails, as well as natural vegetation, wetlands, ponds,

and infrastructure from the commercial gravel operation

that formerly operated on site. The land deal has marked the

beginning of a journey for the community of Jackson Hole

and the partners and supporters of this project, towards the

ultimate vision of transforming the land into a natural park

for the community.

Since December, we have been involved in the planning and

design for the new park, working with the Rendezvous Lands

Conservancy to ensure that collaboration with community

stakeholders and public input are integral to the process.

The community has responded with incredible interest

and support, with over 500 participating in an online survey

and four open houses this spring, and over 500 attending

our Solstice at the Park celebration in June. The project has

been visible in local and regional media as well as in the Land

Trust Alliance Saving Lands newsletter. We look forward to

the opening of the new park in fall 2013/spring 2014 as this

community legacy takes shape.

STEWARDSHIPThe stewardship of our protected properties

is the backbone and integrity of our work.

When a property is protected by the Land

Trust through a conservation easement, it is

just the beginning of an enduring relationship

between the Land Trust, the landowner, and

the land itself. The active stewardship of our

conserved properties through our stewardship

staff and Committee’s work with landowners

and ranch managers on the ground ensures

that the wide-open spaces, wildlife habitat,

scenic views, and ranching heritage of these

properties endure through time for generations

to come.

The responsibility of stewardship requires

staff and board members to conduct annual

monitoring visits to each protected property

while building long-term relationships with

the landowners of these properties. Each

summer as we travel to each conservation

property for our in-person visits with land-

owners, we renew our mutual commitment

with each landowner partner to safeguard

the conservation values of their land. In 2012,

our stewardship staff and board members

monitored our 210 easement areas over the course of 130 visits from spring through late fall, and

also conducted many baseline inventories

on proposed projects. In nearly every case,

we had the opportunity to connect with

landowners of conservation properties in

person – offering opportunities to observe

what is happening on the ground and engage

in discussions about stewardship matters.

With over 117 landowner relationships to

maintain, we strive to be a resource to owners

of conservation properties by fielding inquiries,

distributing our annual Land Steward

newsletter, responding to requests, and

working to remedy any compliance issues. Our

stewardship staff members and Stewardship

Committee work with landowners to respond to inquiries and

project requests related to land use changes

on protected properties. Our Stewardship

Committee evaluates such project requests

from a legal perspective, as well as how

they align with scenic, wildlife, community

and ranching values. Recognizing that

each conservation easement, landowner,

and property is unique, the thoughtful

interpretation of each easement in response

to these project requests helps clarify a

landowner’s reserved rights to land use

changes from those that were voluntarily

relinquished through the terms of the

conservation easement.

Our stewardship staff also manages the fee

simple lands owned by the Land Trust. Much

of our land is leased to working ranches,

which supports local agriculture and provides

revenue to fund the Land Trust’s work. We

seek to be a model of good stewardship

on these properties, constantly evaluating

our land management practices to ensure

a healthy balance between agricultural

productivity, providing quality habitat for

wildlife, and scenic views.

EASEMENT DONOR DINNEROne of the highlights of our 2012 stewardship program was a special dinner event held

on August 23rd at the Snake River Ranch. This evening brought together generations of

conservation landowners, original easement donors, ranch managers, stewardship staff,

and past and current board members to celebrate and thank all those that have worked

on the ground to make land conservation happen in our valley, year after year. Bill Resor

and Rob Cheek shared heartfelt and entertaining stories of Jackson Hole and their families’

histories in the valley to the over 80 guests gathered for the evening.

HIGH SCHOOL BUTTE VOLUNTEER DAYOur stewardship team worked with community volunteers to revegetate and control erosion

on a section of the High School Butte trail, a favorite and easily accessible recreation option

for locals located at the north end of South Park Loop Road. High School Butte exists on

private land owned by the Poodle Ranch, the top half of which is protected by a

conservation easement donated to the Land Trust by Emily Frew Oliver in 1998. In 2009,

the Land Trust successfully revegetated one of the most heavily affected areas at the

top of the butte, with the help of volunteers and donated materials. In May of 2012, we

worked with three Teton Science Schools groups and community volunteers to break up

compacted soil, scatter native seeds, and lay fabric matting to revegetate a new section of

trail. These trail restoration efforts encourage “social trails” to fill in with native grasses

and forbs and improve drainage of the main trail to control erosion on the butte.

WIND RIVER PROGRAMThe Land Trust initiated the Wind River Program

in 2007 in response to growing interest in the

expansion of our work into the Wyoming

portion of the Greater Yellowstone. Based in

Dubois, WY, Wind River Program Director

Ellen Vanuga’s focuses on protecting the

extraordinary conservation values of the Upper

Wind River Valley, while also responding to

requests from landowners in other parts of

Fremont County. Last year’s success in

securing over $12 million of public funding for conservationeasements in the Wind River drainage advanced the progress of

several landscape-scale protection projects

by encouraging matching funds from public

and private sources.

In the Dunoir, we have been incredibly

fortunate that the timing of interested,

conservation-minded landowners has

coincided with the availability of public

funding and support throughout the state

and region. In 2012, these projects continued

to move forward, and two opportunities

further downstream arose to add depth and

breadth to the Wind River Program portfolio

for 2013. A property adjacent to the Dubois

town limits has been awarded funding from

federal, state, municipal and private sources.

This agricultural property provides a scenic

buffer for a planned town park, and the existing

river walkway with its handicap-accessible

fishing points. Its highly visible location

provides a unique opportunity for increasing

community awareness and understanding of

the public benefits derived from permanent

protection of wildlife habitat, ranchlands,

and scenic open space. Another project a

few miles downstream will enhance a JHLT

easement completed in 2007. Both properties

protect the colorful and unique Dubois

Badlands, a scenic corridor along the Wind

River and Highway 26 that is also important

winter habitat for bighorn sheep.

Along the foothills of the Wind River Range

near Lander, we continue the work of securing

matching funds for a large working cattle

ranch. Meanwhile, the owners of two parcels

further east and adjacent to public land

have expressed interest in working with us,

thereby potentially extending the conservation

of this valuable winter range by close to 500

acres. As our work continues to gain acceptance

and visibility in Wind River country, an area

known to be important wintering grounds for

wildlife from an extensive portion of western

Wyoming, opportunities for protection projects

abound and continue to gain momentum.

We had a wonderful summer season connecting with our supporters and local community members at our community events and booths.

COMMUNITY EVENTS & OUTREACH

Over 500 community members joined us to celebrate and

learn about the River Springs – Rendezvous Park project

at our Solstice at the Park in June, on the future

park land. Many rode bikes down on this beautiful

evening to enjoy nature-inspired art installations,

refreshments, live music, and remarks by Executive

Director Laurie Andrews, the park design team, local

public officials, and community partners.

Our 32nd Annual Picnic, at the Indian Springs

Ranch open space in August, featured music by the

Miller Sisters, booths by community partners, and a

live raptor demonstration by the Teton Raptor Center.

Tables were filled with over 500 people enjoying classic

picnic fare as we presented the Town of Jackson with

a gift in recognition of their work on the Flat Creek

Corridor project.

In August, we launched the pilot phase of a new outreach

initiative in partnership with Story Clark’s Conservation

Consulting and the Grand Teton National Park

Foundation: the TravelStorysGPS smartphone app, a free iPhone and iPad app that features engaging

stories about the landscape, geology, wildlife, and

colorful history along Wyoming Highway 22 - including

stories about the Land Trust’s work along this road.

In July, our second Farm Fresh Dinner, co-hosted

with Slow Food in the Tetons and featuring a menu

entirely made of local ingredients, was held at the

beautiful Bar BC Ranch and sold out once again.

We closed the season at the Center for the Arts with

the Wyoming Filmmakers’ Showcase ,

co-hosted with the Jackson Hole Wildlife Film Festival.

Over 250 people joined us for this special evening

of films celebrating Wyoming filmmakers and wide

open spaces.

Throughout the summer, we connected with hundreds of community members at our

Picnic for the Planet, People’s Market, Snow King Live,

and Old Bill’s Fun Run booths.

In Dubois, the Wind River Program’s fourth season of

the very popular historic ranch tours, held in

cooperation with the Dubois Museum throughout the

summer, and the Dunoir Valley horseback ride at the

Absaroka Ranch in early July, continued to be a fascinating

glimpse into Wind River history and the current value of

ranchland as open space.

The Teton Legacy Society of the Jackson Hole Land Trust was formed in order to celebrate the individuals with the foresight and generosity to make a life income or bequest provision for the Jackson Hole Land Trust. Benefits of this lifetime membership include not only the knowledge that you have helped secure the future of this valley but invitations to exclusive events, special field trips and annual recognition. With a planned charitable gift to the Teton Legacy Society, you can protect the future landscape of this valley while also fulfilling your own financial goals. Speak to your financial advisor or call the Land Trust to discuss the giving strategy that is right for you.

THE SUMMIT CIRCLE Loyalty matters. Nearly 80 remarkable donors have demonstrated their loyalty to the Land Trust by renewing their annual gift for the past 20 or more consecutive fiscal years. Our newly established Summit Circle recognizes these committed donors who have given consistently to the Land Trust. Gifts of any amount count toward participation and are greatly appreciated. Participation in the Summit Circle means being part of a special community of donors dedicated to shaping the future of Jackson Hole’s open spaces.

The Land Trust thanks you, our Summit Circle donors, for your steadfast commitment to our work. Regardless of how much you choose to give, the impact of your continued giving is powerful and does not go unnoticed.

Various allocations of gifts have been recognized for the initial listing in the Summit Circle. In the future, participation will be sustained as long as unrestricted gifts to the annual fund are made to the Land Trust every fiscal year without interruption.
