classroom programs Embark on a learning adventure, right in your classroom! Our dynamic presentations will engage students while supporting your learning objectives.

classroom program topics Winged Wonders – Grades preK-2 Students dress up in colorful costumes to explore the body structures of bats, birds, and butterflies.
Are You a Fan of the Orangutan – Grades preK-KDiscover just how long orangutans’ arms are, and how they help these apes survive in the rain forest.
Classification – Grades 2-4Learn how scientists group animals into “classes” based on their unique characteristics, then meet animals from five classes.

Zoo AdventuresExplore the natural world like never before with in-depth, hands-on programs at the zoo.
JunglE JournEys What makes tropical rain forests so unique and vulnerable? Dig into soil samples, build soil profiles, and explore the zoo’s very own jungle to gather data as you compare tropical and temperate forests. Meet live animals and discuss how rain forests compare to your everyday life.

WingEd WondErs Compare and contrast the body structures of flying creatures like birds, bats, and butterflies by dressing in animal costumes, observing live animals, and becoming immersed in the zoo’s tropical jungle.

Wild NightsExperience the zoo after dark at this popular sleepover program.
Take the ultimate safari with your students on a Wild Nights program. Enjoy after-dark adventures and nature activities, then bed down next to the shark tank. Wake up to an early morning scavenger hunt, then spend the next day exploring the zoo if you wish.
Zoo admission, pizza dinner, late-night snack, and continental breakfast are included. Perfect for schools, scouts, and other groups serving children ages 7–12.

may include a visit from a friendly zoo animal.
Advance registration is required. Available weekdays during the
school season every half-hour from 9:30 a.m.–1:30 p.m. Up to 30

We strive to provide a safe and enjoyable visit for all
guests. Stay safe by remaining on designated zoo
pathways at all times. Nametags or matching t-shirts
help us reunite students who become separated
from their group. Share a list of teacher and
chaperone cell phones with adults in your group.
admission
Please have your payment and head count ready
when you arrive. Discounted rates are available
for school groups with 15 or more children;
you must enter as a group and pay in a single
transaction by school check, personal check, cash,
purchase order, claim form, or credit card. Paid
professional school staff are admitted free with
school ID when accompanying paying students.

Prices are updated in November, so double-
check before you collect student payment.
Outdated prices will not be honored.

Plan to bring one chaperone for every five
to eight students. Chaperones should know
your educational goals for the field trip,
be able to guide the children’s behavior,
and remain with students at all times.

Please park buses at the Foellinger Theater
lot and follow the paved walkway to the zoo.
Allow at least three hours for your zoo visit.

fEEding animals
Feeding zoo animals is not permitted, except
for the giraffes, ducks, and goats, using only
food available for purchase at the zoo.
ridEs
Plan to ride the Sky Safari, Endangered Species
Carousel, River Ride, Train Ride, or Pony Ride.
Tickets may be purchased at the zoo entrance
on arrival. Height or age restrictions may apply.

lunchEs
Bring sack lunches, store them on your bus, and
enjoy a picnic in the park. Simply check in with
the cashier to reenter the zoo after lunch. Order
box lunches at least one week in advance from
the zoo’s concession stand at 260-427-1080.

Order Treasure Bags filled with students’ favorite
souvenirs from the Wild Things Gift Shop two
weeks before your field trip, and we’ll have them

EndangErEd animals thEmE
Collect data from zoo signs to track which animals
are endangered, threatened, or not threatened.
Work as a class to determine what you can do
to help save these endangered creatures.
classification thEmE
As you explore the zoo, group animals based
on what class they belong to. At school, graph
the animals you have seen. What type of animals
did your students see most often – mammals,
reptiles, amphibians, birds, fish or invertebrates?
lifE cyclE thEmE
Examine exhibits throughout the zoo and look
for zoo babies. How are animals reared? How
does an amphibian life cycle differ from that of
a mammal? Are kangaroos joeys cared for the
same as baby birds? Divide your students into
groups to research different animal life cycles.
actiVity thEmE
Closely observe animals to determine when
they would be active. What features would
benefit a nocturnal, diurnal, or crepuscular
lifestyle? Determine which animals nosh at
night and who sleeps under the stars.
diEt thEmE
Closely observe zoo animals to determine
what they eat and how they obtain food.
Peek into diet bowls to determine if they are
a carnivore, omnivore, or herbivore. What
are the advantages of each type of diet?

Discovery Boxes must be picked up and returned to the zoo office, or at libraries in DeKalb, Kosciusko, LaGrange, Noble, Steuben, and Whitley counties. Discovery Boxes are free and available for two-week loans year round. Contact the Education Department to reserve your Discovery Box in advance.

Job shadoWs Spend a day shadowing a zoo keeper to learn more about this rewarding career. Opportunities are limited and available to students in grades 9-12. intErnships & ExtErnships Students can gain meaningful hands-on experience through internships and externships at the zoo. Positions are unpaid and priority is given to those who receive school credit for their experience. Applications are accepted all year, but should be submitted at least three months in advance of your anticipated start date to be competitive.
College students and high school seniors are eligible for internships in education, zoo keeping, recreation, and public relations/marketing. College students may apply for externships in veterinary technology and veterinary medicine.

acKErman scholarship The Fort Wayne Zoological Society awards a one-time $2,000 scholarship to a high school senior pursuing a career in the stewardship of animals. Graduating high school seniors in Adams, Allen, DeKalb, Huntington, Kosciusko, LaGrange, Noble, Steuben, Wabash, Wells, and Whitley counties in Indiana are eligible to apply.
