WOODen tOP-50 WAtCH LIst: University of Colorado junior forward André Rob-erson was named to the John R. Wooden Award Preseason Top 50 watch list by The Los Angeles Athletic Club. Chosen by a preseason poll of national college basketball media members, the list is comprised of 50 student-athletes who, based on last year’s individual performance and team records, are the early front-runners for college basketball’s most prestigious honor. Roberson is one of two CU basketball players in the last three years named to the prestigious Wooden Top-50 watch list. Former Buff standout Alec Burks was named to the Top-50 watch list in 2010-11 and later made the final top-20. Roberson is one of four Pac-12 players named to the watch list join-ing Solomon Hill (Arizona), Allen Crabbe (California), and Brock Motum (Washington State). The 37th annual Wooden Award ceremony will honor the Men’s and Women’s Wooden Award winners, and will include the presentation of the Wooden Award All American Teams. The event will take place the weekend of April 12-13, 2013.

seAsOn tOURnAment In 2012-2013: For the sixth straight year, CU will be play-ing an in-season tournament. The Buffs will be one of eight schools participating at the 2012 DIRECTV Charleston Classic presented by Foster Grant, Nov. 15, 16, 18 at TD Arena in Charleston, S.C. The Buffaloes join Auburn, Baylor, Boston College, Charles-ton, Dayton, Murray State and St. John’s. Last year, the Buffs went to Puerto Rico (1-2 record); in 2010-11 Las Vegas (1-1); in 2009-10 (Maui Invitational) and 2008-09 (Rainbow Classic) travelled to the Hawaiian Islands (each w/ a 1-2 record); and in 2007-08 participated at the America’s Youth Classic in Madison, Wis. (0-1). The last tournament CU won in-season was during the 2002-03 campaign at Charlotte, N.C. (Pepsi Classic) winning all three games in three days.

GORDOn & JenkIns tO ReDsHIRt: Freshmen forward Wesley Gordon (Colorado Springs, Colo.) and Chris Jenkins (Detroit, Mich.) will be redshirted during the 2012-13 season. “In today’s world of college basketball, I think it is pretty admirable that those guys made a decision like that. It looks well for our program down the road I promise you, because they are good players,” said head coach Tad Boyle. “It is something we talked about it, but it was their decision. Wesley Gordon has the chance to be a first team All-Pac-12 player, I really believe that when it is all said and done here at Colorado.”

HOme OPeneR seLLOUt: For the first time at the Coors Events Center (since the 1979-80 season), CU sold out the home/season opener with 10,611 in attendance. It was also the largest non-conference home crowd (essentially in school history) to see a season/home opener. The 10,611 crowd was the third largest at CU of all non-conference home games.

CUHeadCoachTadBoyleonparticipat-ing at the 2012 DIRECTV CharlestonClassic: “The Charleston Classic is a great

field for us to be in, in terms of finding out where our program is on a national level,” said CU men’s basketball head coach Tad Boyle. “There are some nationally ranked caliber teams in this tournament and it’s an opportunity to find out with a young team (six freshmen) like we’re going to have real quick. It will be much like Puerto Rico was for us last year. It’s an opportu-nity to play quality teams on a neutral floor and give us a good base of where we need to go as the season progresses. It’s also a great time of year early in the schedule be-fore Thanksgiving, plus it will give us expo-sure through the ESPN Networks of being on national TV.”

ReCORD bOOk WAtCH: In three seasons as a Buff, Andre Roberson is making his mark on the school record book. WHY CU AnD nOt UC? A question often asked of many former Big Eight schools: Why is it the University of Colorado, but the moniker is CU and not UC? (The same applies at Kansas—KU, Missouri—MU, Ne-braska—NU and Oklahoma—OU). “Mid-western casualness,” said CU historian, the late Fred Casotti. It has always been this way at Colorado, for whatever reason, and at the other four—but seemingly no-where else in the USA (except for Tulsa, but its midwest, too). In the 1950s, there was a concerted effort to eliminate the use of “CU” on the Boulder campus, both as a symbol and in speech, but Casotti said that no one would buy into it. “Nobody would change,” he said. “It’s easier to say than U of C, UC sounds like slang or something (as in ‘you see’), and it was traditional. By trying to eliminate it, they reinforced it.”

nCAA/Pac-12 COnFeRenCe tOURneYs• Earned Colorado’s first NCAA Tourna-ment berth since the 2002-03 season (nine years) and only the third NCAA Tour-nament appearance since 1968-69 (43 years).• Won the Pac-12 Conference Tournament and the automatic berth to the NCAA Tour-nament winning four games in four days at the Staples Center in Los Angeles. The Buf-faloes were the No. 6 seed.

nAtIOnAL nOtes 2011-12• Andre Roberson ranked third nationally in rebounds per game with 11.1. Roberson trailed the national leader (Siena’s O.D. Anosike) by 1.4 rebounds per game. CU/eUROPeAn tRIP: For the second time in its history, the CU men’s basketball team traveled to Europe and played a five-game exhibition tour (August 13-22) going 2-3. The Buffs played twice in Paris; twice in Belgium and once in Holland. The last time CU took an international trip was May 20-30, 1997 when then-CU head coach Ricardo Patton went 2-2 against teams from England and Germany. In September of 2006, Patton took his team to Vancou-ver, British Columbia for three games (3-0 record). Later that season, CU went 20-10 and lost in the first round of the NIT.

The best thing from this trip is every player really improved; every player got a chance to play and get in the flow of real-live game situations against good competition. This trip is invaluable to our program this year.”

reer (72-64, .529, 2008-2012).• Under head coach Tad Boyle, the Buffs are 10-3 in postseason play (6-1 in confer-ence tournaments, 1-1 in the NCAA, 3-1 in the N.I.T.); that’s the most wins by any CU coach in the postseason. • His 6-1 conference tournament record is a percentage of .857, ranking first among CU men’s basketball coaches.• Boyle is 48-26 in two seasons at CU (73-34 the last three years including a 25-8 record at Northern Colorado in 2009-10).• First coach in CU history to win back-to-back 20 games in a season.• 32 home wins, best two-year win total in school history.• CU allowed the opponent 63.0 points per game, lowest since 1963-64 (49 years).• Allowed opponent 40.4 shooting percent-age, third lowest since 1965-66 season (47 years). Since 1965-66, the 40.4 FG% ranks behind 2002-03 (20 wins, .402) and 1996-97 (22 wins, .400).• 2011-12 Totals: 24 wins (ties 1st all-time) • 1,289 rebounds (3rd all-time) • 2,429 points scored (4th all-time) • 560 free throws made (4th all-time) • 572 3-point attempts (5th all-time) • 199 3-pointers made (6th all-time) • 810 free-throw attempts (6th all-time) • 835 field goals made (8th all-time) • 1,874 FG at-tempts (9th all-time).

• CU went 12-4 this season when a player scores 10-or-more points off the bench (14 times by Askia Booker, once by Jeremy Ad-ams, once by Sabatino Chen).

• CU ranked 36th nationally and first among Pac-12 schools in defensive field goal percentage by limiting opponents to 40.4 percent shooting from the field. In CU’s 24 wins, opponents shot 36.7 percent, as opposed to 48.2 percent in the Buffs’ 12 losses.• When posting a better shooting percent-age than their opponent, CU went 23-2 dur-ing the 2011-12 season (losses at Oregon, vs. Baylor). Additionally, the Buffs were 16-2 this season when out-rebounding the opposition. CU ranked 70th nationally with a rebounding margin of +3.0 boards per game.

• Askia Booker led the team in scoring sev-en times this season; Colorado was 11-4 when he scored in double figures.

• Andre Roberson became the 12th player in school history to lead the team in re-bounding in back-to-back seasons, but only the second since 1994 (joining Ste-phane Pelle in (’01-02/’02-03). His 11.1 per game average ranked third in the na-tion was the highest since Shaun Vandiver

hauled in 11.2 per in 1989-90. CU is 16-5 in his career when he has 12 or more re-bounds in a game and 8-0 when Roberson grabbed 15 or more rebounds in a game.

• Roberson had 67 blocked shots, the most in a season since David Harrison had 85 in 2003-04.• Roberson is the first CU player to aver-age a double-double for the entire season (11.6 ppg., 11.1 rpg.) since Stephane Pelle (2001-02; 12.8 ppg., 10.8 rpg.).• Roberson became just the third CU player to lead the team in rebounds, blocks, and steals in the same season, and he duplicat-ed that feat during his freshman season. In addition to his 11.1 boards per game, Rob-erson led the team with 67 blocks and 46 steals. He joins Chauncey Billups and Matt Bullard as the only Buffs to lead the team in three categories (out of points, rebounds, assists, blocks, steals) in both his freshman and sophomore seasons.

• Through the first 74 games of Roberson’s career, he is averaging 9.4 rebounds per game, ranking sixth highest per game in CU history. However, Roberson is averag-ing 14.4 rebounds per 40 minutes played which ranks best among all CU players since minutes began being recorded in 1978-79. The previous high is Stephane Pelle (1999-2003) at over a full rebound less per 40 minutes (13.4).

• Over the past two seasons, CU is 16-4 when Roberson grabs 12+ rebounds in a game.• Roberson finished the season with 20 double-doubles, tied for the third most in a single season in CU history (with Cliff Meely, ’68-69). Roberson was fifth nation-ally with 20 double-doubles (CU went 15-5). Roberson has 25 in his career, tied for ninth most all-time at CU. CU is 15-5 in those contests.

• Roberson averaged more defensive re-bounds per game (8.1) in all games than any other player in the Pac-12 averaged total rebounds per game.

•The Buffs had four players (Carlon Brown, Andre Roberson, Austin Dufault, Spencer Dinwiddie) averaging over 10.0 points per game in 2011-12 with no player averaging more than 13.0 points. CU was the only team in the conference tournament to have such scoring balance to claim this. In addi-tion, Askia Booker averaged 9.1 points per game for the season.

• Roberson led the conference in blocked shots per game with 2.4 per conference game. His seven block performance against Oregon is the second highest for the season in the conference and the most by a CU player since David Harrison had seven on Feb. 18, 2004 vs. Texas Tech. Of his 67 blocks on the season, 37 have resulted in a defensive rebound for CU (55.2 percent).

GEORGE BOEDECKER JR. COURT NAMED The University of Colorado celebrated do-nor George Boedecker, Jr. Friday, November 11, 2011 prior to the Buffs season opener against Fort Lewis at the Coors Events Cen-ter by naming the upper gym in its new practice facility the George Boedecker Jr. Court. Less than an hour later, ironically, Boedecker took his place on the visiting bench, as he is in his third season serving as the assistant coach for the visiting Sky-hawks.

Based on a gift from Boedecker to help fund CU’s new basketball and volleyball practice facil-ity, along with his major gifts that built the football practice bubble and CU’s new golf practice facility, there is also a wall located just outside the now renamed upper court in the practice facility saluting Boedecker.

“Again, 11/11/11 will always go down as a special day and we’re proud to unveil this gym with his name on it,” CU Athletic Direc-tor Mike Bohn said. “George and I grew up in Boulder as kids. He’s a treasure to the com-munity. He built the bubble and now he’s helped build this facility for the Buffs and put his name in this gym.”

Hofman, Fort Lewis’ head coach, is a CU graduate, former player and assistant coach. He played for CU until 1974 and then in the late ‘70s, he coached in Balch Fieldhouse and the Coors Events Center for both CU and Fairview High School. He then became the coach at Fort Lewis and played against the Buffs in 1985. He interviewed for the CU head job in 1990 and this is his first trip back to coach in the Events Center since 1985.

Boedecker played for Hofman at Fairview High School from 1978-80 and is in third year as an assistant coach under Hofman. At that same time Boedecker was at Fair-view, Bohn was enrolled at Boulder High School.

“Mike and I had a friendship and maybe some fisticuffs as young children,” Boede-cker said. “But we all came back and we’re all Buffs. Coach Hofman and I are Buffs first and foremost. I’m wearing a watch he gave me from the last Big Eight Championship. In the Pac-12, we will win a lot of champion-ships.”

WHAt WAs sAID AbOUt CU/COACH bOYLe“I want to say the job that Tad Boyle has done at Colorado, and what Colorado represents to the future of the Pac-12, I can make the argu-ment that there’s been no greater gift to college basketball in the Pac-12 than adding Colorado. They are well-coached, play extremely hard, very good on defense. They have talented players now. I feel like they have some really talented players coming in. I wish them the very best in the NCAA Tournament. Whoever draws them is running into a hun-gry, well-coached, disciplined team.” - Arizona Head Coach Sean Miller after the Pac-12 Championship game (March 10, 2012)

“I’m a believer in Tad Boyle. He is not only a terrific teacher of the game with great basketball knowledge, he keeps it simple and gives his players an understanding of what you need to do to win, but a firm un-derstanding of how teams lose, too. Boyle has tremendous toughness in him. He is demanding without being demeaning, and he puts his players in position to achieve together without fear of failing. That’s what truly outstanding coaches do, and Tad Boyle is a truly outstanding coach.” - Jay Bilas, ESPN (August 8, 2012)

“Colorado had the most boisterous contingent at the Pit during the NCAA tournament. The black and gold fans in Albuquerque were loud, proud and committed to ensuring the Buffaloes were well represent-ed. I was there. I heard it. It was obvious to anyone in the arena. The Buffaloes were rewarded with an NCAA tournament win over UNLV -- their first such victory in 15 years -- before losing to Baylor in the round of 32. This was Colorado, and the sport they were cheering was men’s basketball. Now that’s progress. The CU fan base had rarely been known as well traveled (or loud) during its days in the Big 12. Yet something has changed in Boulder -- for the better -- since Colorado’s move to the Pac-12. Now the fan base has something to cheer about: a team that isn’t going to shy away from its newfound success under Tad Boyle, who is entering this third season with the Buffs.” - Andy Katz / ESPN.com (July 17, 2012)

“Tad Boyle, Colorado. The Buffaloes’ prospects begin with the best-kept secret in college basketball: Andre Roberson, a 6-7 jumping jack who was the nation’s third-leading rebounder last season (11.1 per game) while leading the Pac-12 in blocks (1.9). Roberson’s improvement en-abled the Buffaloes to win the Pac-12 tournament and reach the NCAA tournament for the first time in nine years. While Colorado lost three starters, it is bringing back its three most talented players in Roberson, 6-5 sophomore guard Spencer Dinwiddie and 6-1 sophomore guard Askia Booker. “We’ll be more talented, but not as experienced,” Boyle said. Six freshmen have also entered the program, most notably Josh Scott, a 6-10 forward from Colorado Springs who Boyle said “can really

score it”; and Xavier Johnson, a 6-7 forward who played at Mater Dei High in southern California. Looking ahead, one of the main questions that needs to be answered is whether Roberson can provide leadership that is commensurate with his talent. “You always want your best player to do that,” Boyle said. “In the past he has led by example, but he’s not the most vocal person in the world. We’ve been talking to him this summer about doing that.” If Roberson can find his voice, then the Buffaloes will be ready to make some noise in the much-improved Pac-12. - Seth Davis, SI Inside College Basketball (July 30, 2012)

TEAM OF THE WEEK: Colorado“Head coach Tad Boyle has done a super job as the Buffaloes won at Kansas State and beat Oklahoma State. Colorado is 3-0 in the Big 12 after winning just six games in league play last season (2009-10).” - Dick Vitale’s weekly awards (January 17, 2011)

“This exciting process was all about both the young men we have currently and those in the future who will be joining our program, and is an investment in them and represents the com-petitive spirit, teamwork, passion and dedication they stand for.

Tad Boyle represents everything that is right about college bas-ketball. We look forward to his leadership, poise and competitive drive to unite all our collective Buff interests to support our team and this enterprise that has so much promise for the long term.” - Mike Bohn, University of Colorado Athletics Director on what made Tad Boyle stand out above the other candidates

CU HeAD COACH tAD bOYLe and AnDRÉ RObeRsOn Pac-12MEDIADAYQUOTES(SanFrancisco,Nov.1)

tHe mODeRAtOR: We’ll start with an opening statement from Coach.

COACH bOYLe: It’s good to be here today. It’s a great time in our lives to be Colorado Buffaloes and be part of our basketball pro-gram. There’s a lot of excitement around our program right now, obviously, coming off our finish last year. But as I tell these guys in practice every day, that was last year, and we’re not going to talk about that a lot. But I think, in terms of the media and when you look at our program -- to give you some perspective, it’s our third year here-- it’s appropriate that André is with us today because it’s his third year in our program. Two years ago, new staff, new play-ers getting to know each other, it was a whole new experience. Last year we were preparing a team that had lost 80 percent of its scor-ing from the previous year, so it was basically a brand-new team, brand-new league. Now, here we are again in year three, and we’ve got a brand-new team. We got six freshmen, one senior, and thank-fully we’ve got a guy like this sitting next to me who is going to be very important to us this year in the progress of our team. Our team this year is going to be a work in progress. We’re young. We’ve got a lot of inexperience, but we’re going to be relying on guys like An-dré, guys like Spencer Dinwiddie and Askia Booker as we get going here in about a week. So with that, I’ll open it up for any questions you have.

Q.InyourtwoyearsatColorado,you’re32-4athome,itcan’tjustbethealtitude.WhatcanyousayabouttheCoorsEventsCenterandtheatmosphereupthere?

COACH bOYLe: I wish we were 36-0. I can’t tell you who we beat, but I can tell you who we lost to in those four, and two of them shouldn’t have been losses. Altitude is part of it. I think that outside of that, you look at our fan base. Andrew Green, our sports infor-mation director, told me yesterday we’re 200 seats away from sell-ing out our home opener against Wofford on November 9th. So I think that will get done between now and the 9th. And it will look at Colorado basketball and the history of our sport and our university to be in a position to talk about a sellout against a non-conference opponent from a different part of the country and have the Coors Events Center sold out says a lot about our fans. I think our student section and our community have rallied around this team over the last two years, and you’ve just kind of felt it build and build and build. Now it’s incumbent upon us as coaches and players to make sure that we continue that excitement. But outside of the altitude, I think our home-court advantage with our fans and our student sec-tion has been phenomenal.

Q.TalkabouttheGangnamStylevideoyouguysdidandhowdidthatideacomeabout.

COACH bOYLe: Well, I’m going to refer that to the players. I was not part of that video or the organization of it. So I’ll let André handle that one.

AnDRÉ RObeRsOn: All right. Well, it all started with -- I think it was a student in our athletic building, and just kind of suggested a video for Buff Madness and get everybody excited for the Midnight Madness show. I feel like the guys got a real kick out of it. They real-ly wanted to do it after seeing how much publicity the actual video and how big the song was. So we just kind of felt like we should do that and get the fans pumped up, so it was good.

COACH bOYLe: I loved it because it showed the personality that these guys have away from the court and away from basketball, and I thought they did a great job. Even their dancing.

Q.DespitewinningthePac-12Tournamentlastyear,youwereonlypickedtofinishsixthintheconference.Whydoyouthinkthatis?

AnDRÉ RObeRsOn: I’m not sure why that is. I feel like we haven’t gained enough respect yet. I just feel like we’ve got to go out there and work hard every day in practice, continue to get better and just go out there and continue to prove everybody wrong once again.

Q.Howdidyoufare intheNavySEALsexercisesandwhodoyou think emerged as leaders on your team during that?

AnDRÉ RObeRsOn: The program, it was definitely a great experi-ence for us, not just only on a physical side but also on the mental side. Just going through that, through the snow and the sleet and that, I feel like it was great for our guys. They got tougher, team bonding, and just fighting through adversity.

Q.Whodoyouthinkemergedasaleader?

AnDRÉ RObeRsOn: I feel like myself, Askia Booker, Sabatino Chen, Spencer Dinwiddie as well-- I feel like everybody stepped up and played their part in the whole thing, so it was good.

Q.WithwhatAndréhasdonetheselastcoupleyears,doyoufeellikehe’salittleunderratednationally?

COACH bOYLe: Without a doubt. This guy’s the most underrated player on the national scene. He’s a guy who without question, in terms of the returning players, I think is the best defender in this league. He can guard all five positions on the court. When you think about that, he can guard a point guard to a 5-man and anybody in between. He was third in the country in rebounding last year. I don’t know where he was rebounds per minute, but he was right up there as well. If you think about what he’s done for our team over the last two years, a program that’s won 24 games in back-to-back seasons, gone to the final four of an NIT and then the second round of the NCAA Tournament, and he’s led us in rebounding, blocked shots and steals. I look back to his freshman year, he did that all playing about 20 minutes a game coming off the bench. The progress that he’s made in his first off-season was great, and I think the prog-ress he’s made here in his second off-season as he goes into his ju-nior year has been very good as well, because his game continues to evolve offensively. He’s making 3s now. He’s putting the ball on the floor. He’s becoming a well-rounded basketball player, not just a rebounder and not just a defender. He can do a lot of things to help our team win games. The thing he does probably better than any player I’ve ever coached is he gets your team extra possessions. Whether it’s offensive rebounding or a steal, whatever the case may be, he can affect the game in a lot of different ways without scoring the basketball. And he scored it pretty well for us last year.

Q.Followinguponthepredictions,howdoyouseethetopoftheconferenceshakingoutandyourguys’chancesofgettinginthattopfour?

COACH bOYLe: I’m not very good at questions like that. I know our league recruited very well. I think there’s a lot of good young play-ers coming into our league and a lot of nationally rated recruits. Ari-zona and UCLA obviously come to mind. They did a great job on the recruiting trail. I think we did a great job, too, but it’s so hard with young players to predict how quickly they’re going to acclimate to this league and college basketball. I do think our league is going to be better from top to bottom. I think you can make an argument for every team in our league. Our team, for example, we may not be as good early as we were late last year, because of the leadership we lost and the youth that we have, but you look at our talent level, by the end of the year we can be a better team this year than we were last year. We can be. Now, whether we will be or not, who knows? I think what our league has to do, what our conference has to do, is win games that mean something in November and December to get the mojo back to the Pac-12 Conference and where it belongs and where it should be, because I think there’s a lot of good players, a lot of good coaches in this league, and now we just have to go prove it. Talk is cheap. I don’t get into preseason predictions. They picked us 11th last year, sixth this year. Nothing is more irrelevant in my mind.

Q.CanyoutellusalittlebitwhatyouexpectoutoffreshmanJoshScottthisyearandwhatyou’veseenofhimsofarinpractice?

COACH bOYLe: Yeah, Josh is a special player. He’s a guy who can really score on the low block, which we haven’t had since we have been at Colorado. Sometimes your players tell you more about a player than you even observe as a coach, but he’s a guy when he’s open down there, our guys are looking to get him the ball because they know something good is going to happen. Josh has got a knack for scoring down there, getting fouled. He’s a good foul shooter. On our European trip, he averaged 17 points and seven rebounds. As a true freshman, those are pretty impressive numbers. But, again, he’s going to be a work in progress. He’s going to be going against bigger, stronger guys. He needs to gain weight and gain strength. Josh is going to be a terrific player for us, and we’re going to need him to be a terrific player this year for us to be as good as we need to be, because we have a void at that position, and he fills it pretty well.

Q.Youmentionedlosingsomeleadership.Whosteppedupintothatrole?

COACH bOYLe: Well, I think this guy right here, André, has done a very good job. He mentioned Sabatino Chen. We have one senior on our team. Sabatino is a guy who comes to work every day. He had a great off-season. And then I think our two guards coming back, [Askia] Booker and [Spencer] Dinwiddie. That doesn’t mean oth-er guys can’t emerge. You’ve got to be careful as a coach to, at this point in the season really designate captains right now. I mean, to me, the captains will evolve, and they’ll emerge as the season goes on. A lot of people will designate captains in November and Decem-ber. I don’t like to do that, because I think our team needs to be hit in the mouth a few times before we figure out who is going to step up and lead when adversity hits. But I think André and Sabatino, and then Spencer and Askia come to mind.

ColoradoHeadCoachTadBoyleMen’sBasketballMediaDay(Oct.18)Coors events Center

OPenInG stAtement – “Well here we are, another basketball season in Boulder, Colorado. It’s exciting, and it is going to be a fun year. This will be a team that you will be able to watch grow and develop as the season goes on and continue to get better. Right now we are in the growth stage, we’ve got a lot to work on. Practice has gone well, today we had practice number five and we will have six and seven this weekend, we are off to the races.”

On eXPeCtAtIOns tHIs seAsOn – “Well, let me say this, the ex-pectations of this team are far ahead of where the team is, they are a little out-of-whack right now. I don’t get caught up into the outside expectations, we’ve talked about that the last two years and we will hopefully be talking about that for years to come. What I am con-cerned with, especially this time of year, is that we’re getting better every day. We continue to improve, we continue to work hard, and I’m very encouraged with the early stages of our development, but we have a long ways to go to be at the level of play we were at the end of last year. We’ve lost four really good seniors, and we have six freshmen, so it’s a whole new team. We need to concentrate on get-ting better every day, I’m not going to worry about the end result, that is something that will take care of itself, and that is part of the journey that is fun for coaches and players and hopefully for you as well.”

On WeAknesses OF teAm – “Consistency is number one, we show flashes of offensive brilliance. I think we are a very good tran-sition team, offensively, right now. Transition defense we are not. We are not a great half-court executing team on offense right now, and we are not a great half-court defensive team right now. So, if you look at those four categories we are one-out-of-four where we are pretty good and the other three we have a lot of room for improve-ment on. But again, I think the talent is there and the thing I like about this team is the length and athleticism that we have is better than it was last year. I don’t worry about replacing the production from Carlon (Brown), and Nate (Tomlinson), and Austin (Dufault) that we lost off of last year’s team, but what I’m concerned about is how we are going to replace their leadership and I think that is another question that will be interesting to see how it is answered as the season progresses.”

On eUROPe tRIP ACCeLeRAtInG GROWtH OF teAm – “We are accelerated, make no mistake, the European trip helped us. I have to temper my expectations as a coach because of the European trip I think we should be further along than we are. The reality is we had 10 practices and five games, and we threw a lot of stuff at our guys and they absorbed it pretty well but we weren’t able to really develop habits. And that’s what he have to go back to, and what we are doing now is trying to develop the habits that will help make us successful this year. The European trip helped us get a lot of things in, we have more things in right now than we ever have in the past two years at the same stage. That is the good news, but the bad news is we’re not good at any of them. So now it’s fine tuning and developing the habits and getting better and that’s the execution I’m talking about.”

On CHemIstRY OF tHe teAm – “I think if there is one thing the European trip did for us, more than anything, was give us a sense of togetherness, of bonding, of getting to know each other off the court, of our personalities coming out, and our guys really bonding together. And our freshmen class, any time you have six freshmen together, they are in the dorms together, they’re eating together, they’re going to class together, and going to study hall together, I

mean they have really bonded well. I’m really pleased with our re-turning players and how they have accepted (the freshmen) and dealt with them on the European trip and certainly in the few prac-tices we have had as well.”

On skILL LeVeL OF FResHmen – “The skill level is there, the tal-ent is there, and the competitiveness I really like. The other day we had a scrimmage of the ‘vets’ against the young guys and it was 13-2 out of the gates and the ‘vets’ were putting it on them. Not be-cause they executed well, or because they thought the game better, but (the freshmen) came back and made it a game and a competive scrimmage because of their competitiveness and because of their talent and skill level. When they add that to the thought process and the execution that needs to come with it they won’t be down 13-2. So, the talent is as good as advertised, it will just take a while to develop.”

On sWAGGeR OF FResHmen – “It is a good thing in doses, we talk about staying humble and staying hungry. You have to have some swagger about yourself, it just has to be controlled and the perspec-tive has to be there. I temper that, I think it is a good thing at the end of the day, I would rather have to temper that than have them not have the swagger, because you can’t give a guy swagger. They be-lieve in themselves, but our young guys also have no idea what they are in for in terms of what this season and this conference has in store for them. That’s not to scare them, they are not scared which is a good thing, but they have to stay humble and they have to stay hungry.”

On WHetHeR AnY FResHmen WILL ReDsHIRt – “We’ll see, that’s a good question, and I don’t have an answer to that right now. We will turn our attention to that around November seventh or eighth since we open the ninth. The good thing is we have some time between now and then to figure it out. If everybody stays healthy I would love to be able to start to redshirt one or two play-ers a year depending on the situation. Whether that happens or doesn’t at this stage of the game I can’t say yay or nay.”

On GO-tO-GUYs LAte In GAmes – “Well I think we have multiple guys. You think of Andre Roberson and his development, he can ob-viously finish at the rim better than 99% of the rest of the country can. Spencer Dinwiddie has gained 10 pounds over the course of the off-season, he is attacking the rim. And Askia Booker is a guy who made some big shots for us last year, you look back to the Air Force game early and the three he hit, it was a back breaker. He’s got the gumption and the willingness to take those end of shot clock, end of game type shots. And more guys can emerge, Josh Scott on the block is pretty darn tough to handle. In the European trip he averaged 17-and-7, so he is a guy I think in time we can go to. I think we will have multiple guys, and you want to have the ball in somebody hands that can make a play for not only themselves but for hopefully a teammate, and we have multiple guys this year that can maybe step into that role that Carlon (Brown) gave us last year.”

On F AnDRe RObeRsOn’s ROLe CHAnGInG – “Well I think his role will change not necessarily with Wesley (Gordon) and Josh (Scott), but more with Xavier Johnson. Xavier and Andre are kind of the same type of what I would call a hybrid forward, they are not a true ‘three man’ but they are not a true ‘four man’ either, and I think they will be able to play off of each other a lot. But I think Andre, in the sense of what he brings to our team, I don’t see his role chang-ing a lot. He is going to be one of, if not our best defender, prob-ably the best defender in the league in my opinion. He’s a great shot blocker, he has more steals in the first few practices than anybody by far. He led us in steals, block shots, and rebounds as a freshman and sophomore, so I don’t see that changing. I do see maybe of-

Page 37: 2012-2013 COLORADO MEN’S BASKETBALL · 2016. 5. 18. · F 12 Jalen Robinson 6-9 243 Fr. Columbus, Ohio 7.0 2.0 1.0 C 2 Josh Benson 6-9 228 Sr. Dayton, Ohio 14.0 8.0 0 ... media

fensively his role changing a little bit more in terms of being more involved and maybe a few more shots, so we’ll see how that trans-lates. Hopefully he will become a more efficient free throw shooter which will allow his numbers to go up, but he is an important part of our equation, there is no doubt about that.”

On tRAnsItIOn OFFense – “We are going to try and run, abso-lutely, we are going to try to run on every miss and most makes we are going to try to push the ball in transition that is not going to change. We are going to be able to get out and go, we have some good long athletes that can finish in transition and some guards that can push it. I think we have run a lot if you look at the last two teams that we’ve had here. In that first team with Alec (Burks) and Cory (Higgins) and Levi (Knutson) and that group we were pretty potent offensively. Last year we were not quite as efficient offen-sively as that first team but we were much better defensively so if we can somehow find a combination of that first year’s offense and the second year’s defense we are going to have a special, special program. And that’s the goal to be just as efficient and potent as we can be on offense and as stifling and stingy as we can on defense.”

On G sAbAtInO CHen – “I’m really pleased (with Chen). If you look back at this program over the last few years and the type of off-seasons they have had when you go back to Cory Higgins and Levi Knutson and even Marcus Relphorde and those guys that were seniors, had great off-seasons between their junior and senior seniors. Last year, obviously Carlon Brown, Nate Tomlinson and Austin Dufault had a tremendous off-season which allowed them to have great senior years. Obviously, we only have one senior in Sabatino, he’s had a great off-season in the weight room, he is play-ing aggressively, he’s playing confidently, and he’s shooting the ball. You won’t recognize his jump shot guys, he can stroke it and is will-ing to now and able to now. We are looking for him to have a great year, and he is a great leader because he is our hardest worker on a day-in and day-out basis and he demands the respect of his team-mates because of that.”

On C sHAne HARRIs-tUnks – “He is a big part of it. Shane has had some knee issues and some pain, but the subtleties of his game a lot of people don’t see and it is important. He is going to help, and has already helped, our young big guys understand those subtleties in terms of showing on ball screens, being in help side, and being a great team defender. He is our best screener, and our best passer as a big guy, and if he has a great year our team will really benefit from that. It might allow somebody to be redshirted, if he stays healthy and is productive, but if he’s not healthy it is tough. Hopefully we can keep him healthy and keep that knee strong.”

On DIFFICULtY OF nOn-COnFeRenCe sCHeDULe – “Well, I’m not sure I’m the smartest guy in the world, sometimes these sched-ules are made a few years out. I will say this, the schedule we have this year would really be appropriate for our team next year when we have everybody back and have some experience behind us. But, it will be a great challenge for this year’s team. I think the one thing about our young guys is they are competitive, they do have an edge about them, and a swagger about them so it is not going to scare them but I don’t think they realize how hard it is going to be to go to Wyoming and win or go to Fresno and win, or go to Kansas and win, or how stiff the competition at Charleston is going to be. So we will find out right away what we are made of. And that development, hopefully the European trip gives us a jump start, but we want to be winning games in November and December as well as in January and February. It will be harder to do that with this schedule, but our guys will be up to the challenge. For us to progress as a program and for us to beat Arizona at Arizona or UCLA at UCLA, we better be able to go to places like Wyoming and Fresno and win. It will be

a great test to see where we are. We just need to understand that if we fail some of those tests early, it is a process and I wish maybe in retrospect that maybe it was a softer schedule this year for this young group but we’ll see how it goes.”

On sPenCeR DInWIDDIe AnD AskIA bOOkeR – “We are asking a lot of those two young men, and they are very important to this team. Right now they are our starting backcourt, Askia Booker and Spencer Dinwiddie are our guys that we need to produce and be consistent and show the younger guys what it’s all about. They are much improved. Spencer added about 10 pounds of muscle to his frame and he is a lot stronger and more aggressive attacking the basket. Askia is so hard to guard, he is so fast and quick and shifty with the ball, he has great change of direction, and again, we know how aggressive he is which makes him very hard to guard. Both those guys are going to very important to us, but I think just their confidence level is much higher certainly coming into their sopho-more year where as freshmen they are just kind of looking around hoping they can contribute.”

On ImPORtAnCe OF JeRemY ADAms estAbLIsHInG HIm-seLF – “It’s really important, and right now Jeremy has practiced three practices but has been out of the last couple. His issue is his knee, just like Shane (Harris-Tunks), but Shane has been able to get through it and Jeremy hasn’t, so right now the jury is out. But he would really help us, because he has a physical body and a skill level that can really help this team and add to our depth. If we get into foul trouble, or a guy twists his ankle and is out two or three games, Jeremy is a guy that can step in and is capable, but unless he is healthy there is not much we can do about it.”

On teAm beInG tOP AmbAssADOR tO CU AtHLetICs – “I think there is a sense of responsibility that goes with that, and we stand on the shoulders of the previous two teams that have caused that maybe to happen. I want our young guys to understand that as we went through the Pac-12 Tournament last year one of the things we talked about a lot was how we represent more than just ourselves. I want our young players to understand that it’s not just about them. Sometimes as freshmen, their heads are spinning and they are just thinking about what they are doing to survive that day and get to the next. But having a perspective that we represent this university, we represent this state, and we represent our fan base in every-thing we do is something that we have to take seriously and have to talk about it. It is a responsibility that we have, and that we wel-come, quite frankly.”

On teAm beInG PURsUeD – “I don’t know if we are being pur-sued yet. We had a great four game run at the end of the year, but the reality is we finished fifth in the league last year, and we had a good run at the end, and we won an NCAA tournament game. Some good things happened to our program to kind of jump start us and hopefully ignite us to bigger and better things, but I wouldn’t say I am coaching any differently. With our veterans, you have to keep them a little bit more focused and make them realize that there are still more things that we want to accomplish and there are bigger days ahead for Colorado basketball. We have to stay hungry enough to make those things happen, and humble enough to understand that if we slip up it is all taken away, so we have to come to work every day.”
