• AcceleratingtheNewcomerSettlementProcessWorking Women Community Centre uses a holistic and asset based approach when helping newcomers adjust to their new homeland

• EducationandLearningWorking Women Community Centre believes that everyone has the right to access high quality learning opportunities. We support life long learning initiatives that start from an early age.

• CommunityEngagementandLeadershipDevelopmentWorking Women Community Centre believes that when newcomers are fully engaged, utilizing their assets and sharing their skills, they will have greater access to volunteer opportunities that promote social inclusion, active citizenship, personal development and community engagement

Making a difference in the lives of Toronto’s immigrant women and their families since 1974.

Our Approach• Holistic programming with a focus on families• Community/neighbourhood building that is inclusive and engaged• Asset based• Integrated settlement and community engagement model imbedded in all programs and services

We enhanced our work with the Oriole Community Garden by introducing a vibrant intergenerational summer project, where youth and elders gardened together, shared ideas and even wrote a gardening manual. We partnered with the ‘Connecting Communities’ and the Metro Toronto Tenants Association to provide training for community workers on tenants’ rights. We also expanded our relationship with the North York Harvest Food Bank to provide on-site settlement services.

Next, we embarked on an ambitious fundraising campaign that saw the creation of the Patrons Council. We also established the Working Women’s Young Patrons Council. The primary mandate of these Councils is to actively promote the Centre’s work. I want to thank these wonderful women for their support and efforts on behalf of the organization.

We were also engaged in strategic planning to help guide the Centre’s work over the next three to five years. As part of the process, staff completed a survey and participated in focus groups, in-depth discussions were held with the management team, and input was sought from the Board of Director. The outcome was the resounding reaffirmation of the Centre’s approach to its programs and services, which is to improve the lives of immigrant women and their families through a community engagement model. In this report you will read about our core areas, including examples of the impact the Centre has had on neighbourhoods and community members.

Despite funding challenges, the Centre remains resilient and adaptable. Our ability to deliver our many programs is a result of so many volunteers, many of whom are clients wishing to give back to, and share their skills with the community. It is also do to our dedicated staff. They work tirelessly to provide quality services and coordinated programs. Their commitment to the Centre’s mission is truly admirable.

Building Strong Neighbourhoods Together (United Way)Accessible and engaging of diversityHubs integrate the diversity of people who live in the local area. Hub programs and activities are designed to be accessible for people who face barriers to other services and to address the interests and needs of marginalized and racialized people living in the neighbourhood. Hubs provide a space for local residents to contribute their skills, abilities and passions to make their community a better place to live. Working Women is the lead agency of the Victoria Park Hub located at 1527 Victoria Park Avenue which intersects with Eglinton Avenue East. We are in the centre of three former municipalities: East York, North York and Scarborough. Victoria Park Hub is on the path of the planned Eglinton Crosstown transit project.Anchor Partners at Victoria Park Hub• Better Living Health and Community Services• Canadian Centre for Victims of Torture • Community Living Toronto
