OUR MISSIONThe Community Foundation of Greater Jackson is a nonprofit, community corporation created by and for the people of Hinds, Madison and Rankin counties. We help charitable donors establish permanent giving funds that reflect individual philanthropic interests while also making a long-term, positive impact on our community. And we serve our nonprofit partners by managing and growing their endowment.

COMMUNITY FOUNDATION OF GREATER JACKSON, INC.

REVENUE, GAINS AND OTHER SUPPORTContributions: includes all gifts made to CFGJ during the year including gifts to Donor Advised Funds, Designated Funds, and other Funds, as well as gifts made to the Community Foundation’s operating fund. The change in net assets from 2012 to 2013 is largely due to one gift to a Donor Advised Fund when the donor closed a family foundation and transferred the assets to CFGJ.

EXPENSESProgram Services: describes grants made by the Foundation on behalf of all its funds, including the Community Trust Fund. The Community Trust Fund, which is an endowed fund, is CFGJ’s only unrestricted fund. Grants from the CTF are made through a competitive process, and are limited to 5% of CTF’s balance each year. CTF grants comprise only $110,000 of the more than $2.4 million granted this year by the Community Foundation.

Supporting Services: includes salaries and other operating expenses indirectly related to the Foundation’s granting tasks.

CFGJ’s operating expenses for the year were just under $475,000, less than 14% of total expenses and less than 2% of total assets.

ASSETSWhile many of the Community Foundation’s assets are invested in pooled funds at Medley and Brown, CFGJ does have accounts with 13 other investment advisors who manage the investments of specific Funds. The threshold for suggesting an outside investment advisor for your fund is $250,000.

Fine Mississippi craftwork that once graced the Governor’s Mansion is being lovingly

restored and repurposed through a multi-year partnership between the Community Foundation, the Mississippi Arts Commission, and artist Fletcher Cox.

Commissioned during the administration of Governor Ray Mabus to showcase the quality of the state’s craftwork, these pieces are now being brought back to the public eye, thanks to the initiative of former Arts Commission director Malcolm White and artisan Fletcher Cox.

White had heard a rumor that there was artwork from the Mansion being stored at the Department of Archives and History. A chance meeting with Mississippi Archives and History Director Hank Holmes confirmed this as more than an urban myth. Custody

of the craft pieces was transferred from MDAH to MAC, and White decided to see if the pieces could be returned to public view.

White spoke to Fletcher Cox, a wood craftsman, and the original coordinator for the Mansion project. Cox was excited to take part in the restoration, but money was an issue. Mississippi Arts Commission rules prohibit an organization receiving an operating grant from MAC from applying for project grants. And few people would donate money directly to the State of Mississippi for such an endeavor – a nonprofit partner needed to be found. Enter the Community Foundation of Greater Jackson. State monies could be parked in a designated fund at CFGJ, and charitable contributions could be added to performing the inventory of the pieces, determining what could be salvaged, devising a work plan and,

11

ultimately, restoring the works themselves. Under Cox’s direction, several of these pieces have already found new life after spending years virtually forgotten in storage. To date, architectural elements by Pearl River Glass have been reworked and are on display at both the Mississippi Craft Center and the Mississippi Museum of Art. Carved wooden columns by Cox and a woven metal piece by Diane Dixon have also found new public homes.

Cox is happy to be a part of the restoration of some of the best of Mississippi craftsmanship, a project which he was involved in from the beginning.

“It was so stressful getting everything

into the mansion on time, that it’s the only time I’ve ever had a penalty clause in a contract, which means I had to give up some of my fee for every day it was late.

I lost sleep over that,” he remembers. “I was not able fully to appreciate what our achievement was.” Near the end of the Mabus administration, though, Cox attended a party at the Governor’s Mansion and was struck. He marvels, “I was able to look at it all again with fresh eyes and think, ‘whoa, we did pretty damn good here.’

“And it’s been wonderful to be able to resurrect it. It’s such a hopeful feeling to have something that I thought was dead and in the ground come back to life.”

FUNDS

WINTER LECTURE FUNDTwo anonymous donors opened the Elise and William Winter Lecture Series Fund at Millsaps College in honor of the former governor and his wife. Established with an initial $100,000 gift, the fund will provide annual support for the lecture programs at the college.

“Millsaps College is deeply grateful to the donors,” said President Rob

Pearigen. “We at Millsaps believe that our location in the heart of the capital city of Mississippi provides us with the opportunity and responsibility to bring important topics and speakers to the public attention. We’re especially pleased and honored to have our name linked with that of Elise and William Winter through this major gift to the Community Foundation.”

MAGNOLIA BAR FUNDThe Magnolia Bar Foundation established the Magnolia Bar Foundation Scholarship Fund to provide scholarships to deserving students interested in a law career. Established in December 2012, the fund will support three separate scholarship programs.

LIFE of MS FUNDThe board and staff of LIFE of Mississippi established the Living Independence for Everyone (LIFE) Endowment Fund to provide long-range support for the nonprofit’s ongoing programs and services for individuals with disabilities.

Founded in 1983, LIFE of Mississippi is headquartered in Jackson with offices in Tupelo, Greenwood, McComb, Hattiesburg and Biloxi. All LIFE offices are directed by boards and staff whose members live with disabilities.

“The purpose of LIFE is to empower people with significant disabilities to be as independent as they want to be,” said Christy Dunaway, LIFE Executive Director. LIFE offers information and referral services, peer support, advocacy and skills training.

NURSES FOUNDATION FUNDThe Mississippi Nurses Foundation (MNF) established the Mississippi Nurses Foundation Endowment Fund in late 2012. The board and staff of MNF will use this fund to provide long-range support for this nonprofit foundation’s ongoing funds and services.

The Mississippi Nurses Foundation’s mission is to raise, accept and disperse charitable donations to promote professional nursing and better health in Mississippi.
