Rauser received a tough draw and will open his first na-tional tournament against the two-seed and former All-American from Illinois Jesse Delgado (21-3), while Wilson will take on the one-time All-American from Oklahoma Nick Lester (16-1) in his opener and Fager will begin in the pigtail round against Iowa State’s Matt Gibson (17-9).

Thursday’s opening session will get underway at 10 a.m. MT and can be seen on ESPN3.com. The second session will then begin that night 5:30 p.m. MT. Live results can also be followed throughout the tournament by visiting Track-Wrestling.com.

The three Wolverine wrestlers headed to this year’s NCAA Championships will now give Utah Valley 10 all-time NCAA qualifiers after UVU had three qualify for it in its inaugural year of being eligible for postseason competi-tion at the Division I level (2009-10), three more the fol-lowing year (2010-11) and one last season (2011-12).

UVU has previously produced one All-American wrestler in the past as former 125-pounder Benjamin Kjar placed fourth at Nationals in 2011.

Jade, Josh & Adam Ranked in Coaches PollJade Rauser (125), Josh Wilson (149) and Adam Fag-er (285) were all ranked in the final NCAA Coaches’ Panel that came out on Feb. 28. Jade came in at 20th, while Wilson was 21st and Fager was 33rd. The trio were also all ranked on the NCAA’s final RPI as well as Abner Cook (165) and David Prieto (197). Jade came in at 13th in the final RPI, while Wilson was 23rd, Fager was 25th and Cook and Prieto were both 32nd. The final rankings will be one of the tools used as part of the selection process to determine the qualifiers for the 2013 NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships.

Rauser and Wilson Ranked on InterMat PollJade Rauser is currently rakned 16th at 125 pounds by InterMat while Josh Wilson is 20th at 149. Rauser jumped into the rankings after upsetting Air Force’s Josh Martinez -- who was ranked eighth at the time -- on Feb. 16 while Wilson came in after defeating No. 3 Cole VonOhlen by medical forfeit in the title bout of the NCAA West Regional.

Wilson’s Second Straight Trip to NCAAs Senior 149-pounder will make his second straight trip to the NCAA Championships this weekend after he went 2-2 at same tournament a year ago. Fellow UVU wres-tlers Jade Rauser (125) and Adam Fager (HWT) will be making their first appearances.

UVU Places 3rd at NCAA West RegionalUVU had its highest finish in program history at the NCAA West Regional/WWC Championships in Laramie, Wyo., on March 9 by placing third (its previous high was fourth). The Wolverines got all 10 of their wrestlers into the medal rounds (5 in the finals & 5 in the 3rd-place bouts) to help them place third. UVU finished with 70 points, just nine back of the winner Wyoming (79). North Dakota State placed second with 76 points.

Wolverines Finish 3rd in WWC Utah Valley finished third in the WWC dual standings this season with a 3-2 record. UVU defeated No. 22 Air Force 23-9, Northern Colorado 39-0 and South Dakota State 22-18 and fell to then No. 16 Wyoming 20-12 and then No. 25 North Dakota State 18-15.

UVU Records First-Ever Shut Out Utah Valley recorded its first-ever shut out on Jan. 26 as it won all 10 matches in its 39-0 rout over Western Wres-tling Conference rival Northern Colorado. Four of UVU’s 10 wins were via bonus points.

UVU to Host 2014 WWC Championships The University of Wyoming will host this year’s WWC Championships/NCAA West Regional in Laramie, Wyo., on March 9 but next year it will be UVU’s turn to host the conference championships for the first time. The event will

be held in the UCCU Center on the campus of Utah Valley University and will be sometime in early to mid March of 2014. There, berths to the 2014 NCAA Wrestling Cham-pionships will be on the line.

Williams Picks Up Win Number 50 Coach Greg Williams, who is in his seventh season at the head of the Utah Valley University wrestling program, recorded his 50th career victory on Jan. 26 over WWC foe Northern Colorado. Williams currently holds a career record of 53-47 in seven season at UVU and he is also 15-20 all-time in Western Wrestling Conference action.

Wilson Places 8th at Midlands Senior 149-pounder Josh Wilson led UVU at the presti-gious Midlands Championship hosted by Northwestern University on Dec. 29-30 by placing eighth. The placement for Wilson at the top-notch tournament was his second in as many years after he finished sixth at the same tournament a year ago. After going 4-1 on day one of the tourney, Wilson finished with a 5-3 record at Midlands that includ-ed a win over 16th-ranked David Habat of Edinboro.

Jade Rauser Places at CKLV Invite Redshirt freshman Jade Rauser (125 pounds) led UVU at the 31st annual Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational by placing eighth at the stacked tournament. Rauser prob-ably would have finished higher but became very ill and after securing a placement finish was pulled from competition and suffered a forfeit in his last two match-es, which resulted in the eighth-place finish. During his tournament run, he defeated the three-seed and 13th-ranked Sean Boyle from Michigan to advance to the quarterfinals.

Two Sets of Twins It’s rare enough to have one set of twins on a collegiate ros-ter but the UVU wrestling team has two. Both Jade and Val Rauser and Chase and Kyle Cuthbertson are twin brothers. All four the of UVU grapplers are redshirt freshmen as well after they all redshirted last season. Jade and Val are from Townsend, Mont. (Broadwater HS) while Chase and Kyle are from Scottsboro, Ala. (Scottsboro HS).

Wolverines Excel in the Classroom For four consecutive years the UVU wrestling team has been recognized by the NWCA (National Wrestling Coaches Association) for finishing in the Top 10 on the Divi-sion I All-Academic Top 30 Team.

Last season UVU placed fourth with a 3.27 team GPA. The fourth-place team finish is the highest that UVU has ever had after it finished sixth in 2008-09 with a 3.16, ninth in 2010-11 with a 3.13, and ninth again in 2009-10 with a 3.18 GPA.

UVU senior 149-pounder Josh Wilson was also recognized to the NWCA Individual All-Academic team as he held a 3.62 GPA in accounting. Wilson was also the Wolverines’ lone NCAA Qualifier this past season and went 2-2 at the 2012 NCAA Championships.

Quick Facts

Entering his seventh year at the helm of Utah Valley University, head wrestling coach Greg Williams has taken Wolverine wrestlers to the NCAA Champion-ships in each of the past three seasons. In 2011 he also coached UVU’s first-ever wrestling All-Amer-ican in 125-pounder Ben

Kjar, as Kjar placed fourth at the 2011 NCAA Wres-tling Championships.

In 2009-10, Williams had his most successful overall year when he led his team to a 10-3 overall record and a second place conference finish at 4-1. That year Williams also coached UVU’s first-ever NCAA Division I qualifiers as three Wolverine wrestlers punched their tickets to the NCAA Championships.

Williams also coached his first conference champion that season as Flint Ray (133 lbs.) became the first Wolverine to win his weight bracket at the WWC Championships. In 09-10, Williams picked up UVU’s inaugural victory over a nationally-ranked program as his Wolverines upset the #8 Boise State Broncos at home by a score of 22-20.

In 2008-09, Williams coached his Wolverines to a school-record in victories with an 11-3 clip. Williams’ Utah Valley grapplers also posted a 4-1 record in the Western Wrestling Conference that season as well.

In Williams’ six seasons of coaching at UVU he has a tallied an overall record of 47-43. In his first season (2006-07) he posted a 6-12 record and in 2007-08 his squad finished at 9-11 and also picked up the Wolverines first dual victory in Western Wrestling Conference action with a 39-4 win over South Da-kota State. In 2010-11 Williams led his team to a 5-4 record and this last year he led his young squad to a 6-10 clip.

Willliams is the second coach in Utah Valley’s short history as the school will begin its 10th season of NCAA competition this fall.

Williams brings to UVU over 20 years of coaching experience, including 13 years as the owner and coach of the Elite Wrestling Club prior coming to Utah Valley.

He is a 14-time coach of the Utah National Wres-tling Team and during his coaching career has tu-tored over 70 high school All-Americans.

Williams’ pupils include current UVU assistant coach, Justin Ruiz, who was previously the #1 ranked Greco wrestler at 211 lbs. Ruiz is a two-time All-Ameri-can at Nebraska and bronze medalist at the World Championships in 2005.

He began his coaching career at Sky View High School in Smithfield, Utah, where he led the school to an 87-8 record.Williams, a native of San Diego, California, gradu-ated from University High School in 1979 where he was a California State Champion.

From there, he moved on to Utah State University in Logan, Utah and was an All-American and a three-time NCAA qualifier for the Aggies.

2012-13 UVU Season Preview

The 2012-13 Utah Valley University wrestling team will begin its sea-son Thursday at 7 p.m. in the PE Building with the annual UVU Intra-squad Dual. The contest will be free of charge and will be a good opportunity for fans to get an early look at the young and talented Wolverine squad.

“This season will be kind of an unknown for us as we are very young,” said seventh year head coach Greg Williams. “Most of our freshmen are redshirt freshmen however and have a year of experience under their belt but they haven’t really faced tough competition yet. The question is: how well will the first year starters do in Las Vegas (Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational) or at Midlands (Championships).”

Besides having 11 freshmen on the roster this season, UVU also mixes in 10 sophomores, four juniors and two seniors. One of the two seniors is returning NCAA Qualifier Josh Wilson (149 pounds). Wilson, who is ranked 18th in the preseason InterMat poll, wrestled at his first NCAA Championships last season in St. Louis, Mo., and will look to help lead his young teammates this year.

Other upper class-men are senior Glenn Terrano (141) and juniors Abner Cook (165), Avery Garner (141), Zac Jensen (HWT) and Monte Schmalhaus (174). The 10 sophomores on the Wolverine roster this year are Napoleon Aniciete (157), Colby Chris-tensen (125), Adam Fager (HWT), Clay Frost (149/157), Derek Malan (133), Blake Mangum (125/133), Sam Mecham (141/149), David Prieto (197), Ethan Smith (165) and transfer Chasen Tolbert (125) from Colorado Mesa. Out of the 11 freshmen, nine of them are redshirt freshmen and they are Logan Addis (149), Chase Cuthbertson (157), Kyle Cuthbertson (165/174), Chris Mayolo (133/141), Andrew Orr (157), Jade Rauser (125), Val Rauser (133), Tucker Ray (149) and Derek Thomas (184). The two incoming true freshmen this season are Josh Metivier (133) from Hudson, N.H./Alvirne High School and Bracken Nipko (125) from Pleasant View, Utah/Weber HS.

“We know that it is a special group and these guys are going to accom-plish some really great things during their time here at UVU,” added Williams. “We also have a number of sophomores, juniors and seniors that should do quite well too. We have almost all of our starters return-ing from last year and I’m excited for the season to begin.”

In all UVU has 27 grapplers on its roster, which includes 12 returning letterwinners and eight returning starters from last years team that went 6-10 overall and 1-5 in Western Wrestling Conference duals.

“We’ve never had this much talent in the room before,” Williams said. “The program is progressing and we’re very pleased with the direction that it is going.”

After the intrasquad scrimmage on Thursday, the Wolverines will hit the road and travel to Laramie, Wyo., to take part in the Cowboy Open at the University of Wyoming on Saturday. ¬The Wolverines will then travel to North Carolina the following week, Nov. 10-11, to take on Campbell and Bloomsburg and participate at NC State’s Wolfpack Open. From there UVU will round out the calendar year with two major tournaments, the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational (Nov. 30-Dec. 1) and the Midlands Championships (Dec. 29-30).

The Wolverines will then begin their home season against the reigning WWC Champion Wyoming Cowboys on Jan. 4 and will host the annual UVU Open the following day (Jan. 5). Utah Valley will continue its home slate by welcoming Pac-12 foe Arizona State on Jan. 18, WWC rival Northern Colo-rado Jan. 26 and another Pac-12 op-ponent Stanford on Feb. 1, who the Wolverines defeat-ed last year in Palo Alto 25-10.

UVU will then hit the road to take on con-ference foes North Dakota State and

South Dakota State on Feb. 6 and Feb. 8 respectively and Boise State on Feb. 13. The Wolverines will close their regular season by hosting Air Force on Feb. 16. UVU will then head back to Laramie, Wyo., for the WWC Championships/NCAA West Regional on March 9. The NCAA Championships will then take place in Des Moines, Iowa March 21-23.

“All of our conference matches are important and we’re also hosting three really good duals this year. We’ve got Wyoming, Arizona State and Stanford all coming in. They are all good quality programs and have been ranked in the past. We’re really excited about our home schedule this year,” concluded Williams.
