MY MajorThe easiest explanation is I work on them and pilots fly them. I plan on being an airplane mechanic; I keep them running. They work you up the chain from your first year to getting an Airframe and Powerplant certification.

a ha!I was in 4-H for eight years working with electric and small engines. I’ve known since then that I want to do something with my hands. When my brother went on his first college visit to Purdue, I went with him. We took a tour of the hangars and saw giant turbo engines. I knew I had to get in here.

MaKing a differenCeAirplanes are complex pieces of machinery. very few people know what goes on behind the scenes. The maintenance required is astounding. you have to know how to tear

it down and repair everything. Anything from specific tires that are matched with rims to the many miles of wire inside the plane. People don’t realize what’s actually sitting beneath them.

favorite Classes I loved my Aircraft materials class. We started the first week getting to know the tools. We moved on to basic safety wiring and sheet metal riveting and then built up to manufacturing parts. We designed a wingspan; we had to cut the holes to size, bend it, heat treat it and rivet other parts. our last project was to manufacture a small wing assembly. It’s about three feet long, two feet wide, and made up of at least a dozen parts. Then, in Aircraft materials 2, we caused damage to the wing so that we could fix it.

the PUrdUe advantageI’m looking into internships for rolls-royce and AAr. They are more interested in hearing from me because I’m a student at Purdue. Purdue is a great name; people see the name and they want the people from here.

MY Major:At Purdue, aviation management is split into three main disciplines: air traffic control, airport management,

and airline management. my main reason for selecting airline management

was because I love to travel and learn about different cultures. I have a plethora of future career opportunities in areas such as fleet management, finance, customer service, global operations, fleet scheduling and more. Just last semester I took a course called global Aviation Systems that intro- duced me to aviation on a global scale. In a nutshell, we learned how aviation is regulated in other countries but more importantly how that affects domestic operations here in the U.S. A country’s culture, political views and relations all tie into its aviation industry.

a ha!I first got interested in aviation in the seventh grade. We had just moved into a new house, and we happened to be right under a flight route. I was so fascinated with the jets flying over that I decided then and there I wanted to be a pilot. Later, when I was working at a recreational facility, I told my boss about my dream to fly and she set me up a discovery flight. From there, the rest is history.

MaKing a differenCeI want to be a global aviation operations manager. I really love traveling and meeting different people. I would love to serve as an ambassador for an international airline by establishing and sustaining business relationships around the world.

indUstrY researChmy favorite experience has been my under- graduate research work with one of my aviation professors because I get direct industry experience. We’re working on improving Delta Airline’s turnaround procedure, which consists of servicing the aircraft between or before flights. one of the perks is that we get the chance to travel to Atlanta and work with company representatives. The entire project is a collaboration between undergraduate and graduate students along with the help of Delta’s team.

ChinaI did a maymester study abroad in China with my aviation Professor Chien-tsung Lu. We had a great time and learned a lot about Chinese culture and business. I even made a video about my experiences (watch it at: http://bit.ly/KTmPvb )

MY MajorIt is learning the ability to be a professional in the construction industry through book

work and hands-on experience. you gain not only an education but also a learning experience, an edge. managers oversee the projects as far as budget, schedule, materials and more.

a ha!In bCm, we are required to have 800

internship hours to graduate. Some people think that’s a lot, but I think it’s awesome. one summer I worked as an inspection intern for American Structurepoint. It wasn’t a job, and it wasn’t work. I was there putting my time toward something I was passionate about, learning and just gaining that experience. I saw it as an opportunity, not a work requirement. I enjoyed every minute of it. That’s when I knew I must be in the right place.

MaKing a differenCeThe construction industry is shifting. We have new technologies, building green, lean construction. These changes call for new types of professionals. Women have often been excluded, and that’s where I want to make a difference. There’s an opportunity

for women to excel in the construction industry, more so now than ever. you have to be mentally strong and believe in what you can do, do it right and to the best of your ability. That fact isn’t determined by gender.

ClassrooM ProjeCtsIn bCm 21600 (electrical Construction) we were assigned to groups. We had to write a proposal to a company. We presented the layout of the room, showed how everything was going to be wired, where the switches were going to be and what materials we were going to use. each week in lab, we used an application to make sure we were on schedule and on budget. It was a lot of fun, and it allowed us to learn and retain the knowledge. That’s my favorite thing about any class really, using computer programs to help out.

netWorKingbCm students all have working relationships with each other, so it’s nice to have that experience as well. When you get into the industry, the relationships and networking are huge. Construction is a people industry.

MY Majorour major is different and so diverse; we can do security, management or we can do network-heavy jobs. We take the best of both worlds — database and networking — and let students dabble in both to see which track they want to go to. That flexibility is so nice, because information technology is a broad topic. To me, CIT is the technology part that no one ever sees; it’s the hidden part that helps the company operate. And we get to play with the cool toys.

a ha!When I was little, my brother took me to a LAn party. I got to see how that was set up and how people with similar interests can bond. I knew right away that this was for me.

In every CIT class, there has been a team project. It’s fascinating how we get along naturally. We can get to know each other

and get to work in an hour because of our shared interest.

MaKing a differenCeI really want to learn the technical side of

IT and then work 4-5 years as a technical engineer to get to know all of IT. Then, I want to go into management where I can make decisions that I would accept if I were a technician. I like understanding how it

works, and it’s important to understand the technical side to advise others later in your career. I am interested in working for the government or in national security.

PraCtiCal lessons I haven’t taken a bad class yet, but I really like the wireless and network design part of our major. you learn something that you can use every day. I’ve modified my own router to get larger signals and stronger signal strength in my apartment. I can deploy virtual machines, basically a private network in my computer, on my own laptop. now, I can test projects on my laptop on one of the virtual machines before I test it on a lab computer.

jobs, jobs, jobsonce I took a Web design class, I got a $15/hour job. I still get about five emails a week about computer jobs or part-time IT jobs. Those are beneficial while we are here and after we graduate. There are great opportunities for summer internships. This year I had 15 offers, and last year I had eight.

MY MajorIn CgT, we are translating ideas into

something that is understandable and reasonable. For example, in my area of construction graphics, I will start with someone’s idea for a house. It’s my job to draw it so that it can actually be built.

I turn it into a 3D model so you can see what’s going on throughout. For our intro course, we use Adobe Suite – InDesign, Photoshop, Dreamweaver, Aftereffects, and Illustrator. If you get the basics of those, it’s a good start.

a ha!As an engineering student, I took CgT 16300 (graphical Communication and Spatial Analysis) one year as an elective. I thought, “This is the most fun I’ve ever had in class. I wouldn’t mind doing this all year long.” I grew up with a game controller and keyboard in hand. I’ve always been on the computer. In CgT, our projects are the bulk of our grades. I do it and I see it, and it helps me when it comes time to take exams.

MaKing a differenCeI added a building construction management minor. If I’m going to draw these houses, I need to know how they are being built and understand the materials. If I really want to be successful, I need to have my own business, which is why I’m doing the entrepreneurship certificate. I have my eye on an mbA as well.

sPring breaK ChallengeI’ve been a team leader for the Ultimate Spring break Challenge through the residential Life office. each spring break, we go somewhere to do volunteer work. Last year, we went to Kissimmee and orlando, Florida. We helped at the ronald mcDonald House, give Kids the World, Hubbard House, Habitat for Humanity and the orlando Community Food & outreach Center. The center is part thrift store, grocery store, and outreach center.

MY Majorelectrical engineering technology is for people who like hands-on stuff and who like to build projects. I also like to figure out things for myself outside of class. I dealt with LeD cubes, which I built as part of the Association of electrical Technologists (AeT) club. If you are interested in something, you have to do it out of class and try to build it yourself.

a ha!my father is an engineer in China. He works with power supply. When I went to his factory, I saw from the beginning to the end of the power supply. It’s magic! resistors and capacitors can be put together and power a computer; that’s really cool. In eCeT 20900 (Introduction to microcontrollers), we had to use a programmable board to control a motor and a light at the same time. For our final lab, we had to control a fan, motor and a light at the same time. When it worked, I felt like “wow, I can do this. you

are a maker right now!” I like to program to control something. I want to do a program to control my garage door.

MaKing a differenCeI will try to have a company and design some very cool stuff just to make life better. I’ll use my products to help other people.

stUdent organizationsI had the chance to be a member of AeT club. We have tutoring, we have a small group and we build stuff. We have a go-kart, and we built it together. This semester we had more members coming in. We had professionals coming in to talk about careers and jobs. We’re a social group that provides the opportunity to have leadership experience and to build projects.

MY Majorengineering technology is a pretty broad look at technical fields. It brings together leadership ability with hands-on experience, and it’s backed up by theoretical studies and statistics. you learn so much through it, really. The degree was designed for graduates to make an impact in local businesses. I’ve taken a computer programming class and learned about welding and metal casting. There’s even a class about how different cultures around the world affect the manu- facturing process. It’s not an easy major, but it is very interesting and thought provoking. It makes me glad to work hard in it.

a ha!As a kid, I was always getting yelled at by my mom because I was taking stuff apart to

find out how it worked. I loved being hands-on with mechanical projects. I liked messing with gadgets, so I knew I wanted to work in more of a hands-on field. I knew I chose the right major

because I didn’t mind coming to school.

MaKing thingsone of my favorite lab experiences was for meT 14300 (materials and Processes). We were studying the different types of casting

and processes, and we were able to go in the lab and produce a sand cast of a Purdue medallion. Then we used melted aluminum to make our own medallions.

MaKing a differenCe I’m still discovering everything I can do with my degree. I know I’d like to improve manu-facturing processes. I might be a technical designer and design a new widget or product, something that helps improve already-made objects. I’m attracted to the automotive industry, so I could work on designing a more efficient set of wheel bearings or a more efficient engine. I also love the tooling industries.

the inside sCooPThrough Purdue, I’ve had opportunities to meet a lot of awesome people. Without that connection, I’d never be able to take the in-depth tours of manufacturing plants. We were allowed to go further into the factories than public tours, and we got to meet with leaders of the companies. We’ve toured Indiana companies like Ahaus Tools in richmond and red gold in orestes.

MY MajorWe are providing students with the foot-holds of engineering and technology before entering college. We use the engineering design process, which helps students invent their own ideas and express them. We’re addressing technology and engineering and discovering the application and evaluation process of them.

a ha!I took IT 27800 (Teaching Construction Technology) during my first semester in my major. I liked how the professor, nathan mentzer, challenged us. It was an entirely new experience for me. He wanted us to help teach the class to everyone. We designed an amphitheater for a local montessori school. We did everything from the design process to the prototype and the building materials. We presented our ideas to the montessori school, and then we went out and built it. It was such a cool experience. I learned way more about the design build process, and we built this

lasting amphitheater where students will be able to express their ideas.

MaKing a differenCeI’ve been the only female in a class twice. I want to let other young women

know that they can succeed, and not

to be afraid of the challenges. I want to give them the confidence that they can do it. I like showing people how to do something, and it’s a great feeling to see the light bulb go off in their heads. Helping someone has always been a main priority in my life.

starting PointAs I look back, my father has always been involved in technology. I didn’t realize the impact my dad was having on me at the time. We had one of those really old computers that I played games like oregon Trail on. I took an interest in technology not knowing that I had. I used to build bridges with my brother across a ditch; that was technology. my Purdue classes have taught me that I’ve been using technology my entire life; I’ve just been doing it in a silent way.

researCh ProjeCtWe are looking into what students are learning in engineering and technology in high school, how they are interpreting it and how they are applying it to a problem. We need to make sure students are learning and grasping the concepts.

MY MajorWe study concepts that are useful in the shipping and receiving business, but it’s more than that. We cover warehousing and inventory, anything to do with products and the supply chain. Industrial distribution is more than just Fedex. Any company that has a product needs someone to ship, order and get the product in. The job can’t be outsourced, and it’s not a job that’s going to go away. According to the job outlook, this is a growing field. A lot of us get a dual major with industrial technology. you become more familiar with quality and processes and lean manufacturing, which can all relate to distribution. It’s good to know those to be more marketable.

a ha!When I first came to Purdue, I wasn’t sure what I wanted. I started in accounting, and then I started looking at other majors I wasn’t familiar with. With industrial distribution, I liked the potential jobs, the class loads and the possibilities. I liked that most of the classes had lab components and that we could apply what we learned to real-world scenarios. The material really appealed to me. It has been fun, and I love being in warehouses. every industry has them.

siMUlation Provides exPerienCeIn IT 33200 (Purchasing, Inventory and Warehouse management) we had a lab to learn software programs. We worked in the simulation in teams. The teams each had a customer base and also had to focus on inventory, pricing and replenishing stock. We had to be competitive with prices and marketing. At the end of the 20-minute period, the group with the best strategy won.

internshiPI was a supply-chain field engineering intern for office Depot, based in the company's distribution center in Atlanta, ga. I created a spare-parts database for the conveyor systems in all of the distribution centers. I also applied inventory and replenishment processes that I learned about in class. It was a great experience to see concepts I've studied be put to use in a fast-paced distribution environment.

MY MajorWe’re the people who go into a corporation and improve it. We use tools like lean manufacturing and Six Sigma to make sure they are running smoothly and eliminating waste. We make sure things are efficient and effective. my major deals with making sure the product is likeable and up to customer standards. I know that my major is definitely affecting people, and they are getting the best quality with the tools that we learn. Technical electives can help you specialize, and that’s pretty cool. We actually get to see what everyone else in Technology is doing. We take classes in aviation, electrical engineer- ing technology, and information technology. We get a grasp of what’s going on.

a ha!my older sister took me to a national Society for black engineers (nSbe) conference when I was in eighth grade. Then I came to Purdue for TeAm camp, early in high school. I got to explore a lot of technology majors and

programmed a machine to be able to speak. I started in a different major, but I couldn’t

see myself there forever. I’m more of a customer-type person; I like to make sure people are happy.

MaKing a differenCe I hope I’m in a position to improve the company I work for and be the best, make sure everything is up to par and take the customer into consideration.

CUstoMer foCUsI’m a customer who pays attention to the quality. you don’t want to have to deal with creating products that wind up being defective; it’s a waste of money. It is better to eliminate that in the front end rather than work backwards from a complaint.

KnoWledge to WorKLast year, I interned with J.P. morgan Chase in Columbus, ohio, as a business analyst. This summer, I worked in supplier quality for ge in Appliance Park in Louisville, Ky. I did research with the Louis Stokes Alliance for minority Participation (LSAmP) and pre-sented at the national Defense University virtual Worlds Conference. I’m a competitive person, too. Some friends and I got third place in a Student Soybean Innovation Contest; we developed a surface protectant made from soy. I also won second place in a case competition that was designed to help ge bring jobs back to America and first place in an nSbe elevator pitch competition.

MY MajorIn the shortest description, my major is about making things. It focuses you on the manufacturing industry. It exposes you to a lot of new technologies and processes. It’s

not just black-and-white standards and guidelines and procedures; it’s putting a level of creativity into it.

a ha!I knew I was in the right major when I

realized I could watch “How It’s made” for three hours straight. The crazy amount

of technology used to make a stapler, for example, going from that raw steel and plastic beads to a finished stapler, requires so much of the newest technology.

MaKing a differenCeI played in a steel drum band in the Philadelphia area. They are so expensive because they are handmade. I really want to get into making instruments that are available to everyone. I want to find a way to make the manufacturing easier and less expensive. It is an underrated instrument.

PrograMMing ChallengesIn meT 28400 (Introduction to Industrial Controls), I worked on a small-scale assembly line with photo-eyes, product-stops and product-rams. To get a pallet around a U-shape should be easy, right? but it takes about 30 lines of code depending on what you want it to do at each stop. If you incorporate a small robot or grab a part, that’s another whole subroutine on a different controller. you have to know different coding languages, and you have to know what is safe to do. one of our classes put an emphasis on the safety. When you are programming robots, they don’t know what is safe. you have to be their moral guide. And you can’t always see a hazard. A small loophole in programming can make a big difference.

being a PeoPle Personmost people on this campus are very easy to get along with. There are interesting people from different walks of life; people with different interests than you have, but you get along with them seamlessly. There’s just something about this campus. In addition, at career fairs, you get experience talking to people in a professional setting. Purdue helps you learn how to communicate with people.

MY MajormeT is a major that deals with the mechani-cal aspect of engineering. It involves using known principles and technology to incor-porate into the design and production of a process. meT is less theoretical, so whatever might work on paper or CAD software is actually put into practical use and made as efficient as possible. We take into consid- eration things like turbulence, friction and other real-life factors that may be neglected in the design process. I’ve been able to experience a broad spectrum in meT, from electrical to fluids to thermodynamics.

a ha!I grew up on a farm, so I knew what hands-on was. I wanted a major with a hands-on component, and I wanted to learn stuff I didn’t know anything about. In every class, we have a lab where you can be hands-on and learn by seeing the system instead of just drawing on the board or in a CAD software program. my favorite lab was a fluid power lab using hydraulic components. We got to see what goes into components that enable hydraulics to retract and extend cylinders, which is important in construction equip-ment, among other machines.

MaKing a differenCeI want to be in a career that I enjoy and use my major to benefit the company that I work for. I want to come back to Purdue to tell the students to work hard because it pays off in the end. every ounce of effort counts, especially in college.

PUtting KnoWledge to WorKone summer, I had an internship with ryan Fire Protection. I was in charge of retrofitting and creating fire protection systems in building and factories. Last summer, I had an internship with Donaldson Company Inc. in my hometown. I was in charge of the air filters they make for machinery equipment. I worked to get their machines and lines to be more efficient and figured out ways to increase the productivity of air filters.

MY MajorI call this the business wisdom major. oLS is a major that is shaping tomorrow’s leaders. That’s what we do; that’s our main focus. It’s not about simply getting a job; it’s being prepared to lead, to be Ceos and to be at the top of the business world. It offers a lot of versatility. oLS teaches creative and different ways to lead, motivate and guide people. We take our fair share of Technology courses, too.

a ha!I’ve been in sports my whole life, and I was a football captain in high school. Leadership was ingrained in me before I got here, and my high school sports experience gave me that. Coming from an inner city, I knew I had to do something different. I didn’t want to be a follower. I know that as a college student we change a lot, and because we change a lot, I needed something that would allow me the freedom to change career paths. I can leave with an oLS degree, and I can go into grad school in almost anything.

MaKing a differenCeyou have to want to be a difference maker. In oLS, you have to have a creative mind. I’ll have my impact on society by corralling people who want to make a difference, influencing people to work hard and moti- vating people. you also have the opportunity to focus on global business. In today’s world, you have to know how to interact with people in the international arena. you can be influential on an international level and be involved in global business.

it’s aboUt the PeoPleIf I wasn’t at Purdue, I don’t think I would have the mindset I have. oLS gets to the root of people. In today’s world, you have a lot people who consider themselves the boss and those who consider themselves decision makers. you’ve got to know how to work with everyone, how to deal with change and conflict management. We put the people first, and then get the business in order.

MY MajorI fly planes. What coincides with flying is a ground class. For each rating, you have a class on the ground you have to take: private pilot, instrument and commercial pilot ground courses. They teach you the rules, regulations and weather minimums that you need to know. When you are flying, you put the knowledge to use. you have to take some crew resource management classes, because you need to keep an organized cockpit. you need to know how to be a leader as a captain. There are also systems classes, because you need to know how the electrical and fuel systems work. If something goes wrong in the air, there is not an engineer on the flight. you need to recognize the problem, know what’s causing it and how to fix it.

a ha!The mother of the kids I babysat for was a pilot for United. She would call me to see if I could babysit, and then say “I’m off to London” or “I’m off to brazil.” I thought it was the coolest thing that she could travel all over and balance that with a family. I’m really family oriented. I thought, if she can do it, I can do it, too.

MaKing a differenCebasically, I want to reach out to the girls who are thinking about being pilots. Women are clearly a minority. out of 45 part-time flight instructors this year, I am the only female. I am also mexican, so I can reach out to other minorities, too. I want to tell them, “If this is what you want to do, you can do it.” you can find time to balance work and your family life. That message is good for everyone who wants to be a pilot.

the best hoMeWorK on my absolute favorite flight, we had lots of clouds. We took off and found a gap in between the clouds. once we got above them, for miles around, all you could see was the top of the clouds. The sun was rising over the cloud layer, and it was absolutely beautiful. It’s the coolest lab experience that you can have. It’s so relaxing up there. I’d rather have that than a science lab.

PUtting in hoUrsyou need a certain number of hours for certain pilot ratings. We do cross-country flights for the purpose of getting hours for ratings and to graduate. We stay within Indiana, and the neighboring states. It’s good practice and you become familiar with the airplane.
