in the Twin Cities!North St. Paul is not your typical

"small town." The rich history oNorth St. Paul dates back to 1887,when the visionary Captain HenryCastle embarked on an extraordi-nary endeavor and envisioned athriving and prosperous commu-nity outside o the inner cities.

Castle settled in St. Paul in 1868and began purchasing land nearSilver Lake to be platted or theuture community o North St.Paul. The city was designed to be amanuacturing town. Many o thefrst actories used wood productsrom supplies readily availablerom the booming timber indus-tries located in Stillwater. Thetown provided many good jobs orEuropean immigrants settling inour nation. Quality schools, nu-merous churches and a vital butquaint community developed and

prospered as the city grew. From apopulation o 621 in 1888, North

St. Paul has grown to 11,460 today.

North St. Paul blends its historiccharms and traditions with easyaccess to amenities associated with

larger communities. Residents andvisitors alike enjoy a vibrant mix ounique shops and restaurants, anabundance o recreational activitiesincluding the Regional GatewayTrail and the newly-built trail-

head - Rotary Park. Rotary Park isadjacent to the trail between First

and Second Streets near the windturbine. It oers natural amenitiesincluding open green space, a pondand mature oak trees. Recent im-provements include the construc-tion o 31 parking spaces, park

Facts on NSP Wind Turbine:

North St. Paul ormed the Min-nesota Municipal Power Agencywith seven other cities in 1992.Today, MMPA is made up o 11member cities.

Minnesota requires most utili-ties to provide at least 25% otheir electricity sales romrenewable sources by 2025.

The turbine stands 115 eet talland generates 160 kilowatts opower at ull orce about 1%o what an average city needs tooperate.

Because it was built in Calior-nia, the turbine originally hadsome trouble dealing with Min-nesota winters it shut downor a brie period early in 2010.

Maplewood may be bestknown as the birthplaceo the Post-It Note, butits also where more than 38,000

people reside.Long beore it was incorporatedin the 1950s as the Village o Maple-wood, the area was known as NewCanada Township. Its recordedhistory dates back about 150 years.Originally, the Dakota Indiansinhabited the lands that would laterbecome Maplewood. Around 1850,European settlers the Bells, Caseys,Conlins and Vincents venturedrom St. Paul and traveled along what

is now Hazelwood Street. Thoughtheir early homesteading eorts wereunsuccessul due to conicts withthe American Indians, the amilieseventually received news that theDakota had let the area, which al-lowed them to stay permanently onthe land.

While those pioneers were setting

down roots in northern Maplewood,Thomas Carver began arming nearwhat would soon become McLeanTownship, in what is now called theCarver Lake neighborhood in south-ern Maplewood. Both o these areaslater became part o New CanadaTownship.

The railroad industry is whatspurred the townships growth. TheLake Superior and Mississippi Rail-road became the St. Paul and Duluth

Railroad, which intersected with theWisconsin Central Railroad. At thejunction o these railroad lines wasa town site, Gladstone, which waspredicted to rival St. Paul.

Through the years, the little vil-lages o Gladstone, McLean Town-ship and New Canada Townshipthrived. In the early 1950s, Min-nesota Mining and Manuacturing now known as 3M was lookingto expand and bought a large tract o

land in McLean Township outsidethe city limits. To attract the compa-

ny, the New Canada Township Boarddecided the best course o action wasto incorporate and become a city.

On Feb. 26, 1957, New Canada

Township ofcially became a vil-lage. Now all it needed was a name.

Village board members suggestedMaplewood, and when one mem-ber traced a maple lea rom his backyard, the city logo was born. Maple-

woods dog leg shape gives the citya very distinct look when one views

it on a map. What was a populationo 14,200 when the village was frstincorporated has grown to more thantwice that size today.

History

The city o Maplewood's desire to preserve a 70-acre parcelo land south o Carver Road is taking shape. The Conserva-tion Fund, a national nonproft organization dedicated to

preserving outdoor heritage, has purchased land in the FishCreek Area Greenway, which was long slated or residentialdevelopment.

Maplewood and Ramsey County must raise $2,160,000 byall 2013 to purchase the land rom the Conservation Fund.

Fund-raising eorts have already come close as o August2012 only $435,000 remained to be raised beore the FishCreek land could be held as open space with no plans ordevelopment.

The Maplewood Nature Center has been holding seasonalwalks o the Fish Creek land to better educate residents onthe beauty and value o preserving the ora and auna insouthernmost Maplewood. The 70-acre Fish Creek parcelis located on top o the Mississippi blus and oers a pic-turesque view o the horizon. The site is home to raptors,songbirds, oxes and deer, and is dotted with mature woods,pastures and wildowers.

Other community events are planned or the next year,including barbecues, undraising dinners and archeologypresentations. For more inormation on these events, or to

Acity known or "The

World's Largest Snow-man" once had aspira-tions to rival Chicago. In 1887,Capt. Henry Anson Castle oundedNorth St. Paul along the shores oSilver Lake. The city has been wel-coming new residents and visitorsever since.

What began as a rolling prairieand oak savanna boomed into aprosperous city almost overnight.Six churches, 15 actories, 100 cot-

tages and 1,500 people soon lour-ished in the early days o North St.Paul, which was developed in hopeso overtaking Chicago as the mostillustrious manuacturing giant inthe Midwest.

Castle sold 40 lots or residentialdevelopment on his 1,200 acres eastand south o Silver Lake. The NorthSt. Paul Land Company ormed andpurchased the land rom Castle.

The United States experienced

a major depression in the 1890s,however, and North St. Paul did notescape the inancial crisis that ol-lowed. The suburb's residents andmerchants got through it by pullingtogether and remaining positive.Neighbors held "Hard Times Par-ties" and "Poverty Socials" to uplitthe community. In 1893, a mag-niicent ice palace made o 12,000tons o ice rose 25 eet into the airat Silver Lake and helped shit the

thoughts o North St. Paulites awayrom their inancial woes.

Vestiges of the pastDowntown North St. Paul pro-

vides a look back at the past. Neu-mann's Bar, the longest continuous-ly operating bar in the state, irstopened its doors the year North St.Paul was incorporated in 1887 andremains a staple o the downtownarea today.

At the corner o Highway 36

and Margaret Street sits one o thecity's most prominent landmarksand symbols. "The World's LargestStucco Snowman" is a reminder othe city's ormer annual celebrationo "Snow Frolics," when a giantsnowman was made o real snow.

The late Lloyd Koesling, a townbarber, designed the 44-oot-tallstucco structure, which was built bythe North St. Paul Jaycees between1972 and 1974. The snowman's

16-oot smile greets residents andpassersby traveling on busy High-way 36.

A family-friendly cityDriving through North St. Paul

today, one can sti ll see reminderso the city as it was when originallyounded 125 years ago. AlthoughCaptain Castle's dream o NorthSt. Paul mirroring the accomplish-ments o Chicago didn't come to

ruition, his other wish or the citywill continue to ring true. NorthSt. Paul is a warm, riendly suburbthat welcomes residents new andold. As the song, "A Hundred Yearsin North St. Paul" says:

"Yes, times were a little slower

then, the trains were sometimes late,

"A quarter took you 14 miles in

1888.

"Though through the years a lot

has changed, and everything has

grown"To me it's still the place to be - the

place that I call home!"

Veterans ' Memor ia l

A Veterans' Memorial Park has

been planned or North St. Paul orover 10 years, but was interrupteddue to the Highway 36 renovations.With the construction projectinished, the city has green-lighteda committee to begin planning thememorial.

North St. Paul American Le-gion Post 39, VFW Post 1350, andNorth High Air Force Junior ROTCare partnering with the city to helpdesign and raise unds or the me-

morial, which would be located inthe ormer Cannon Park northeasto 36 and Margaret St.

The memorial is estimated tocost roughly $95,000 and take ivemonths to construct. The commit-tee in charge o the project is in theearly stages o developing a mar-keting and undraising campaign,and no concrete timeline has beenestablished.
