DEAR FANS,Everything you need to know about Northeast Conference basketball is at your fingertips with the inaugural NEC Tipoff magazine. We hope you enjoy the publication!

We are passionate about basketball in the NEC and anticipate the 2012-13 men’s and women’s basketball season will be an exciting one, culminating with the NEC Tournament and March Madness. The Conference remains committed to raising the profile of the sport and enhancing the NEC brand, most notably with the debut of NEC Front Row, the league’s new state-of-the-art digital network, which offers free live and on-demand ac-cess to conference events. I encourage everyone to check out hoops action all season long on your computer or mobile device.

Thank you, the fans, for your #NECPride, support and tremendous enthusiasm for college basketball. Enjoy the action!

Sincerely,

Noreen MorrisCommissioner Northeast Conference

SPORTSMANSHIP AND RESPECTNortheast Conference member institutions value the principles of sportsmanship and the ideal of pursuing victory with honor. As such, the NEC Team Sportsmanship Award program recognizes those teams and student-athletes who best exemplify these traits in the spirit of competition. For the first time every NEC institution had at least one team honored for its commitment to sportsmanship during the 2011-12 academic year. Saint Francis (PA) finished the year with a league-high five NEC Team Sportsmanship awards.

The NEC continues to participate in the NCAA’s Respect Campaign to address sportsmanship and fan behavior issues through education, communication and enforcement when problems arise.

2012-13 NEC BASKETBALL PRESEASON INFORMATIONTHIRD TIME’S A CHARM?Could a “three-peat” be in the air? In the 32-year history of the Northeast Conference, no team has won three consecutive men’s basketball titles, but if the league’s coaches are to be believed, LIU Brooklyn is on the cusp of making history. The two-time defending champion Blackbirds were picked first in the annual preseason poll. LIU, which claimed nine of the possible 12 first place votes, has defeated Robert Morris in each of the past two NEC championship games.

NUTMEG STATE FOES PLACE 1-2 IN WOMEN’S POLLThe Northeast Conference women’s basketball coaches expect a Nutmeg State rivalry to take center stage this season. In their annual preseason poll, the league’s 12 head coaches selected Quinnipiac as the favorite to capture the 2013 NEC title and pegged rival Sacred Heart, the defending league champion, to finish second behind the Bobcats.

The inaugural Northeast Conference (NEC) Basketball “Social” Media Day took place at the brand-new, state-of-the-art Barclays Center in Brooklyn on October 23. A blend of traditional media opportunities and social media interaction made for a unique afternoon for those in atten-dance and fans watching live on NEC Front Row. The webcast of the event was offered free of charge and featured interviews with all 24 of the conference’s men’s and women’s head hoops coaches. Complying with the “social media” theme, the live webcast featured a Bloggers’ Round-table discussion, and fans interacted with the Conference by tweeting questions and comments using the hashtag #NECinNYC. The broadcast of NEC “Social” Media Day subsequently aired on Fox College Sports (FCS) in early November.
