THE BASIC FACTS n UTEP (3-4) hosts a top-25 team for the first time in nearly three years on Monday when UNLV (8-1) comes to the Haskins Center. n The Rebels are missing their no. 2 scorer and rebounder, junior forward Mike Moser (10.9 ppg/8.3 rpg), who is out with a dislocated elbow. But they are close to gaining the services of sophomore forward Khem Birch, who sat out the firstsemesterafter transferring fromPittsburgh.Birch averaged 4.4 ppg, 5.0 rpg, 1.9 bpg and 15.0 mpg in 10 games for the Panthers last sea-son.

THE SERIESn UNLV leads the series 9-3 and is 3-2 versus the Miners in El Paso.n The Rebels have won the last four meetings between the schools. UTEP’s last victory over UNLV came on Jan. 17, 1998 in El Paso, 68-50.n Tim Floyd was an assistant coach at UTEP forthefirstsevenmeetingsbetweentheschoolsfrom 1979-84. David Rice was an assistant at UNLV for two meetings during the 1997-98 sea-son.n UTEP and UNLV met in the second round of the West Regional at the 1984 NCAA Tourna-ment. It marked the only meeting between the schools where both teams were ranked. UTEP entered the game rated no. 9 by the Associated Press and UNLV was no. 13. The Rebels won 73-60.n Ten players who appeared in last year’s UTEP-UNLV game are on 2012-13 rosters for the re-spective schools. They are Carlos Lopez-Sosa, Justin Hawkins, Anthony Marshall, Mike Moser and Quintrell Thomas for the Rebels and John Bohannon, Cedrick Lang, Malcolm Moore, Jacques Streeter and Julian Washburn for the Miners.n UTEP’s Tim Floyd is 0-1 in his head coaching career against UNLV. The Rebels beat the Min-ers at the Thomas & Mack Center, 65-54, a year ago.

RENEWING ACQUAINTANCESn UTEP and UNLV were both members of the Western Athletic Conference from 1996-99. The teams split two meetings during the 1997-98 sea-son during that time frame.n In 1999, UNLV joined Air Force, BYU, Colo-rado State, New Mexico, San Diego State, Utah and Wyoming as charter members of the Moun-tain West Conference.n UTEP is 7-12 versus the aforementioned Mountain West charter schools since the forma-

THE LAST MEETINGn Anthony Marshall scored 20 points and hit a series of big shots down the stretch as UNLV slipped past UTEP, 65-54, on Dec. 14, 2011 in Las Vegas.nUTEPtrailed49-48withalittleoverfivemin-utes to play before Marshall scored 10 points in a game-ending 16-6 run. He hit two three pointers duringthespurt.Thefirst,atthe5:05mark,liftedthe Rebels into a 52-48 lead. The second, with 3:53togo,extendedthecushionto57-49.n Marshall was the only Rebel starter in double figurescoring,butUNLVreceived25pointsfromits bench led by Justin Hawkins (12 points) and Carlos Lopez (11).n Michael Perez led UTEP with 17 points, but was also responsible for eight of the team’s 20 turnovers. Gabriel McCulley and Julian Wash-burn chipped in with 15 and 12 points respec-tively.n The Miners shot 41.2 percent and made just 1-of-10 three point tries.

MINER LEGENDSn UTEP continues to honor past greats at its home games, a policy instituted upon coach Tim Floyd’s arrival for the 2010-11 season.n On Monday, the Miners will retire the #14 worn by Bobby Joe Hill, the hero of the 1966 national championship team.n Hill averaged 15.0 points, leading Texas West-ern to a 28-1 mark during the 1965-66 season. He scored a game-high 20 points in the ‘66 na-tional championship win over Kentucky.n Hill’s two steals and corresponding layups in a one-minutespanofthefirsthalfturnedthetideinthe Miners’ 72-65 upset of the Wildcats.n A Detroit native, Hill remained in El Paso after graduating from TWC and retired as an executive with El Paso Natural Gas. He passed away in 2002.n His widow, Tina Hill, will be on hand for Mon-day’s halftime ceremony.n In addition, the Miners will be wearing retro Texas Western uniforms on “Throwback Night” Monday.

75 YEARS OF MARCH MADNESSn UTEP is also participating in the “75 Years of March Madness” program in conjunction with the NCAA and the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC). A painting of legendary UTEP coach Don Haskins by world-renowned art-ist Opie Otterstad will be unveiled at halftime of Monday’s game.n The original art piece is part of a collection of 75 individual paintings, one for each of the 75 na-tional championships from 1939 through 2013. n The original piece of art will be auctioned off online starting Tuesday at www.NCAA.com/ART. COACH TIM FLOYDn Tim Floyd is in his second season at the helm of the UTEP program, and his 19th year as a col-legiate head coach. His previous college head coaching stops include Idaho (1986-88), New Orleans (1988-94), Iowa State (1994-98) and USC (2005-09). He was also head coach of the Chicago Bulls (1998-2002) and the New Orleans Hornets (2003-04) in the NBA.n Floyd’s career coaching record is 371-211, and his mark at UTEP is 43-31.n Floyd enjoyed 16 winning seasons in his previ-ous 18 years as a collegiate head coach.n His teams have made eight NCAA Tournament appearances and four trips to the NIT.

ONE OF THE NATION’S BESTn UTEP was recently recognized as having one of the nation’s top-50 college basketball pro-grams over the last 50 years. The Miners were no. 46 in the analysis conducted by ESPN’s Stats and Information Group.n UTEP tallied a total of 187 points in a scor-ing system that takes into account conference regular season and tournament titles, winning percentage, NCAA Tournament bids and seed-ing, NCAA Tournament advancement, NCAA and NIT titles, first and second teamAll-Americansand players taken in the top 10 of the NBA Draft. Programs also lose points for NCAA sanctions and vacated seasons.n According to the scoring system, UTEP had the ninth-best program in the country during the 1960’s and the 25th-best during the 1980’s.n UTEP has made 29 postseason tournament appearances over the last 50 years, winning a combined 14 conference regular season and tournament titles.n UTEP remains the only Division I school in the state of Texas to win a men’s basketball national championship.
