Oneoftheuniquenicknamesinallofintercollegiate athletics belongs to TheUniversityofAkron. Originally Zippers, athletic directorKenneth“Red”Cochraneofficiallyshort-ened thenickname to theZips in1950.Twenty-five years earlier a campus-widecontest had been conducted to chooseanickname forTheUniversity’sathleticsteams. Suggestions submitted by students,faculty, and alumni included GoldenBlue Devils, Tip Toppers, Rubbernecks,Hillbillies,KangaroosandCheveliers. Thewinner,freshmanMargaretHamlin,receivedaprizeof$10forZippers,a$6pair of rubber overshoes and a brandnameoftheBFGoodrichCompany. The evolution of Zippy, UA’s mascot,began 40 years ago when the studentcouncildecidedtheUniversityneededamascot. “Zippy” the kangaroo was officiallydeclared theschool’smascotonMay1,1953. In2007,ZippywasnamedtheCapitalOneNationalMascotoftheYear.

KlimhasbuiltacompetitiveprogramwithapairofUAre-cordsfallingin2011-12atthe2012Mid-AmericanConfer-enceChampionshipsatOcasekNatatorium,withCatherineCarr resetting her own record in the 400-yard individualmedleyandRachelSzymkowiakbreakingtheAkronrecordinthe200-yardbreaststroke.

For the second year in a row, Akron placed four student-athletesontheAcademicAll-MACteam.Klim’steamshaveplaced a total of 18 athletes on the Academic All-MACsquadduringhertenure.

In2010-11,Carrsmashedthe400IMschoolmarkbymorethan six seconds at the 2011 Mid-American ConferenceChampionships.UAalsoplacedfourstudent-athletesontheAcademicAll-MACteamin2011.

Inthe2009-10season,KlimmentoredKendallKarchnertoaMAC200-yardbackstroketitle,andplacedthreeswimmerson All-MAC teams. Karchner received first team honors,whileseniorStephZielinskiandfreshmanKatieMileswerenamedtothesecondteam.

Additionally, the2009-10seasonsawsix individualUAre-cordsfall,whilethreerelayrecordswerebroken.Klimalsocontinuedtopushexcellenceintheclassroom,asKarchner,Zielinski,Hoover,andMadelynRobinsonwereallnamedtotheAcademicAll-MACsquad.The2009-10squadwonfivedualmeetsaswellastakingthirdplaceattheZippyInvita-tionalandfifthattheMACChampionships.

In 2008-09, the Zips’ program posted a 6-6 mark in dualmatches,andplacedthirdintheannualZippyInvitational.AkrononceagainplacedfifthintheMACChampionships,shattering 13 school records in the process. Overall, the2008-09UA swimminganddiving squadbroke14 schoolrecordsandKatieCarterandZielinskiwerenamedfirstteamandsecondteamAll-MAC,respectively.CarterandZielinskialsoearnedAcademicAll-MAChonorsfortheirworkintheclassroom.

The2007-08campaignwashighlightedbyZielinski’sfirstofthreeall-conferenceseasons,asthestandoutwasnamedtotheAll-MACsecondteam.

Inherfirstseasonincharge,KlimguidedAkrontoa5-7dualmeetrecordandmatcheditshighesteverMACChampion-shipfinish,takingfifth.

Klim-whoisjustthesecondheadcoachintheprogram’shistory-cametoAkronafterspendingfouryearsasanas-sistantcoachwiththePennStatemen’sandwomen’sswim-minganddivingteams.SheaidedaNittanyLionwomen’steamthatwonback-to-backBigTentitlesin2005and2006.Shealsohelped10student-athletesearnAll-Americansta-tus.

DuringhertimeinStateCollege,Klimservedastherecruit-ingcoordinatorunderheadcoachBillDorenkott,wasanin-structoratPennState’sSummerSwimCampandtheUSASwimmingSelectDistanceCampDirector.Klimwasinstru-mentalinbringingmanyofPSU’s37NCAAqualifiers,10All-Americans,25honorablementionAll-Americans,nineindi-vidualBigTenChampionsandeightOlympicTrialsqualifierstoHappyValley.

PriortohertimeatPennState,shespenttwoseasonsonthestaffat theUniversityofPennsylvania,whereshecoachedoneindividualIvyLeaguechampionin2002.

Before coaching at Penn, Klim spent three seasons as anassistantcoachatVillanova,helpingtheWildcatstoback-to-backBigEastConferenceChampionshipsandanNCAAindividualchampion.

Klimwasadecoratedswimmer,earningAll-AmericanhonorsatEmoryUniversityinAtlanta,Ga.SheearnedAll-Americanhonorsthreetimesduringhercollegiatecareerandgradu-atedin1992withabachelorofartsinEnglish.

Head diving coach Chris Medvedeff is in his 15th seasonguiding The University of Akron divers. The only divingcoachinschoolhistory,Medvedeffhasbuiltoneofthemostcompetitivedivingprograms in theMid-AmericanConfer-ence.

In2011-12,LeeannaHoovercappedoffhercareerwithasixthplacefinish in the3-meterspringboardat theNCAAZone Meet, matching the highest finish in UA by MACChampionsKathleenChristianandKatieCarter.HooverandCarlaMcNamaraeachposted top-10finishesat theMACChampionshipsinthe1-meterand3-meterevents.

Medvedeff’schargescontinuedtomaketheirmarkontheMAClandscapein2010-11,withAkrondiverstakingthreeofthetopfivespotsinthe3-meterspringboardandthreeofthetopsevenspotsinthe1-meterattheMACChampi-onships.LeeannaHoover lead thewaywitha third-placeshowinginthe3-meter.CarlaMcNamaraandAmandaAn-geloffalsotookapairoftop-tensattheMACmeet.McNa-marahadastandoutrookieseason,culminatinginapairoftop-20showingsattheNCAAZoneDivingChampionships.

The2009-10seasonsawtwoAkrondiversplaceinthetopten in both the one-meter and three-meter events at theMACChampionships.Hoovertookfourthinthethree-meterandninth in theone-meter, andAmandaAngeloffplacedninthinthethree-meterandtenthintheone-meter.

Theseasonprior,MedvedeffwasnamedMACDivingCoachoftheYearforthethirdtimeduringhistenureatAkron,aftermentoringKatieCarter toasweepof thedivingcompeti-tionsatthe2009MACChampionships.Carter’spairofwinswerethesecondandthirdconferencechampionshipsofhercareer,makingherthemostdecorateddiverinUAhistory.

The2008-09seasonsawCartersetschoolrecordsinbothdivingevents,scoring311.65intheone-meterspringboardattheMACChampionshipsand339.68onthethree-meterboardagainstMarshall.Additionally,Medvedeffmentoredfivediversintothetop-15attheMACChampionships.

UnderMedvedeff’stutelage,Carterbecameoneofthemostgifteddivers in theMid-AmericanConference.Asa fresh-manCartersmashedtheschoolandMACChampionshipre-cordinthethree-meterspringboardtoupsetaverytalentedfield.Carter’swinwasthefourthconferencechampionshipbyaMACdiverintheprogram’sshorthistory.

During the 2004-05 season, Medvedeff was once againnamedMACDivingCoachoftheYearafterleadingtheZips’divers to one of the best showings in program history attheconferencechampionship.LindseyPowersearnedMACCo-DiveroftheYearhonorsandwonthethree-metertitle

andMelissaHolbachfinishedinthetop-eight.UAdiversto-taled15eventwinsduring2004-05,setfiveindividualcareerbests,twoschoolrecords,twopoolrecords,andonemeetrecord.

MedvedeffwasalsonamedMACDivingCoachoftheYearin2001afterKathleenChristianandSusanOverhadexcellentshowingsattheMACChampionships.Overwonthethree-meterspringboardattheMACMeetandwasthefirstMACChampion inprogramhistory.Overalsowonthe10-meterplatformexhibition,whileChristianplacedthirdinboththeone-meterandthree-metercompetitions.

MedvedeffcametoAkronafterspendingthepreviouseightyearsastheheadcoachoftheAkronRippersswimclub-ateamhealsofounded.Stillveryinvolvedonthejuniorandseniornationalscene,Chrisremainsactiveastheheadcoachof the Rippers. The Rippers are a consistent player at thejuniornational levelandhavefeatureda juniorworldteammember,twonationalchampionsandnumerousnationalfi-nalists.

MedvedeffwasthedivingcoachatCopleyHighSchoolfrom1989-94, where he mentored six state finalists and sevenstatequlifiers.While incollege,heheadedthedivingpro-gramatAkronFirestoneHighSchool.

MedvedeffhasalsoworkedwithU.S.diversthroughoutEu-rope and has extensive OHSAA experience in NortheastOhio.

MedvedeffgraduatedfromtheUniversityofAkronin1989withadegreeinpsychologyandaminorinbusinessadmin-istration.
