The renovationsare part of a plan toupdate the dealer-ship to fit a newGeneral Motors im-age and to ensure abetter facility forcustomers.

Rainbow will beadjusting to thedemolition and con-struction by operat-ing out of otherbuildings and trail-ers until work isfinished.

Vicknair said de-spite all the workbeing done, thedealership will re-main in full serviceduring the remodel.

“We ask the pub-lic to be patientwith us during thistime,” said Vick-nair.

He said once theshowroom and lotsare complete, every-one will benefit.

Rainbow will alsobe getting its firstelectric car, theChevrolet Volt, in

about the same timerenovations arecomplete so thedealership will beable to showcase anew building andnew hybrid car tothe public simulta-neously.

“We’re really ex-cited,” said Vick-nair.

Jacob’s World Fa-mous Andouille isworking its way back tonormal after a fire lastyear virtually de-stroyed the smokehouseand processing area.

“We are still in theprocess of rebuilding,”said owner Aaron Li-ons.

The family businessspecializes in “worldfamous” andouille, astaple in the River Par-ishes, and other localfoods such as sausage,boudin, tasso, hogheadcheese and smokedchicken.

Jacob’s Andouille hasbeen in business since

1928, and Lions hasbeen making thesmoked meats since hewas 10-years-old.

“We have been a partof the community formany years, and we areproud to serve them,”said Lions.

Jacob’s also offersvacuum-pack for easyfreezing and for travel-ing.

“People from all overthe world have sampledJacob’s world famousandouille,” he said.

Phillips continues to leadin world of dental health

Dr. Greg Phillips, den-tist, author and dentaloffice design expert,has joined with a selectgroup of leading dentalprofessionals fromacross the nation to co-write the forthcomingbook titled, “More ThanA Mouthful.” NickNanton and businesspartner JW Dicks re-cently signed a publish-ing deal with Phillipsand the other dentalprofessionals to con-tribute their expertiseto the book, which willbe released under theirCelebrityPress imprint.

Port continues to expand operationsThe Port of South

Louisiana recently cele-brated its 50th anniver-sary and still remainsthe largest tonnage portin the Western Hemi-sphere.

The port providesaccess to a transporta-tion network of deep-draft vessels, barges,highways, rail, pipe-lines and air routes.

It spans 54 milesalong the MississippiRiver through St.James, St. John theBaptist and St. Charlesparishes.

Executive DirectorJoel Chaisson said theport has been busy inthe last year andexports have increasedconsiderably.

The port exportsmore than 60 percent ofgrain shipped out ofAmerica across theworld from grain eleva-tors located in the portdistrict.

Likewise, the petro-chemical facilities inthe port’s jurisdictionprocess a great portionof the fuel utilized inthe United States.

“Our area in Louis-iana is responsible forover 20 percent of fuel

produced to power au-tomobiles,” said Chais-

son.The approval of

House Bill 2 in the re-cent legislative sessionheld in Baton Rougeappropriated millionsof dollars in additionalfunding to the port fornumerous upcomingprojects.

The funding will beused toward the St.John Parish airportrunaway extension pro-ject, development of theindustrial park on thewest bank of St.Charles Parish, a dockin St. John Parish andfor a project at theGlobalplex Facility inReserve, according toChaisson.

The port will also beenhancing security onthe river and lakes inthe area to begin rescuework.

Chaisson anticipatesgetting a new fire andrescue vessel.

He said some resi-dents tend to overlookthe greatest attribute ofthe port, the mightyMississippi River.

“The Mississippi Riv-er is an amazing assetnot only to Louisianabut America,” saidChaisson. “What ajewel we have here inSouth Louisiana. Some-times the levees hideit.”

The Port of SouthLouisiana, along withthe deepwater portsthat run from BatonRouge to the Gulf ofMexico, constitute thelargest contiguous portsystem in the entireworld.
