Scout the view fromevery seat in the house

Panko, checking out the view from a seat at Citizens Bank Park yesterday, says he wants to give fans an advance view.

Thanks to a South Philadel-phia man, there’s no needto worry about purchasinga pricey stadium ticket andgetting stuck behind a foulpole or glass partition.

At least that’s the visionbehind A View From MySeat, a website and An-droid app that encouragesusers to upload cell phoneshots of, well, the viewfrom their seats in thou-sands of venues around theworld.

“The idea came out ofme and my wife wanting

to find a better place to sitbefore we bought Philliesseason tickets,” said cre-ator Frank Panko, 36. “Welooked around at a gameand everyone had a smart-phone, iPhone or Androidand they were all takingphotos.”

The app, which was re-leased in beta mode last Ju-ly, currently shows viewsfrom over 7,000 seatsacross the country andabout 600 in Philadelphia, where its following is thestrongest.

Baseball is the most pop-ular sport, but people cansend pictures from anyevent. “Some of the stuffwe get surprises us: golf, some Nascar and monstertruck rallies,” said Panko, who quit his job two weeksago to focus on developingthe program full-time.“Outside of the U.S., we dowell with soccer, especiallythe Premier League in theU.K. Whatever people send,as long as it’s venue-related,we just try to adapt to it.”

Though a View From My

Seat currently has photosfrom 1,200 venues, Pankoestimates that it covers lessthan 1 percent of availableseats in the country, a fig-ure he hopes to change.“I’d like to see if I can part-ner with a bigger companylike StubHub or Ticketmas-ter to have photos show upwhen you’re actually buy-ing tickets or to get peoplediscounts for every photothey share,” Panko said.

A 498-count indictment wasunsealed yesterday charg-ing 53 people in a drug con-spiracy that allegedly gar-nered more than $5 millionin less than three years anddefrauded the federal gov-ernment of an untoldamount of money in health

insurance payments.William Stukes allegedly

recruited patients for Dr.Norman Werther, whowrote fraudulent prescrip-tions for oxycodone-baseddrugs. The “pseudo-pa-tients” took the prescrip-tions to Northeast Pharma-

cy on Bustleton Avenue, where pharmacist Ihsanul-lah “Sean” Maaf allegedlyfilled them.

The patients paid for thedrugs using cash, private in-surance or Medicaid, thenallegedly turned the drugsover to Stukes for resale on

the street. His organizationallegedly distributed over200,000 pills in Philadel-phia and MontgomeryCounty.

Forty-four of the 53 de-fendants were arrested yes-terday. The other nine arefugitives. METRO/AW

Infostraightfrom fans’mouthsThough sites like SeatData already offer asimilar service, Pankosees them as likeminds rather thancompetition.

“I could actually seeworking with Seat Data at some point —they’re really just sup-plying seating chartsand one photo fromeach section of an emp-ty venue, but we’resupplying actual gamephotos with commentsfrom the fans,” he said.“I’d like to think we’regetting better contentby going straight to thefans themselves.”

Toomey will havea big say on debt

Pennsylvania senator to serve on supercommittee totackle country’s debt He’s ‘deeply honored to serve’Republican U.S. Sen. PatToomey made waves theselast few months by takingthe hard stance against rais-ing the debt ceiling withoutsubstantial cuts to the fed-eral government’s growingdeficit, going so far as tosay: “I’m not going to goalong with some deal thatraises the debt limit with-out making the real cuts inspending we need and thereal process reform.”

He then didn’t vote forthe debt ceiling increaselast Tuesday, which wasapproved.

Now, he’ll have the ulti-mate chance to weigh inon cutting $1 trillion or soin the next year after Sen-ate Minority Leader Mitch

McConnell, R-Ky., appoint-ed him to represent SenateRepublicans on the super-committee that will adoptwhat the whole Congress— presumably — will thenpass to lower short-term

deficit problems for thecountry.

“I am deeply honoredfor the opportunity toserve on this bipartisancommittee and to be partof the important work wewill be doing,” Toomeysaid yesterday after the ap-pointment. “In light of lastweek’s events, with the na-tion’s credit downgradeand the deep drop in themarkets, it is all the moreimperative that this com-mittee do its job effectivelyand come up with a prod-uct that both tackles ourdebt crisis and can help re-vive our failing economy.”

While the Chester City wa-terfront has seen significantdevelopment in recentyears, including PPL Parkand a converted officebuilding, one thing hasbeen missing: viable publictransit options. That couldsoon change.

A new study from theDelaware Valley RegionalPlanning Commission looksat the feasibility of buildinga SEPTA Regional Rail sta-tion on the Wilming ton-Newark line that would linkpedestrians to the stadiumand other planned develop-ment. Highland Avenue, currently the closest sta-tion, is only expected to lastanother three to five years

and would cost about $26million to rebuild. It is alsoamong the least-used sta-tions on SEPTA with an av-erage of 84 daily boards.

“I think that’s an awe-some idea,” said Mike Nai-oti, of the Sons of Ben, theenthusiastic fan organiza-tion for the Union. “Rightnow, the best option is not

really a good option.”SEPTA is still studying

the proposals.“The concern that we

have right now is funding isalways an issue,” said ByronComati, SEPTA’s director ofStrategic Planning.

No economic impactstudies have been done onthe proposals, said ThomasMoore, Mayor Wendell But-ler’s chief of staff.

“Having an enhancedpublic transit system toserve the waterfront core ...is obviously somethingwe’re very interested in,”Moore said.

Economic fears are weigh-ing heavily on Americans, with a large majority say-ing the United States is onthe wrong track and nearlyhalf believing the worst isyet to come, a Reuters/Ip-sos poll said yesterday.

The poll reflected grow-ing anxiety about the econ-omy and frustration withWashington after a narrow-ly averted government de-fault last week, a credit rat-ing downgrade by Standard& Poor’s, a stock marketdive and a stubbornly high9.1 percent jobless rate.

President Barack Obamacame out bruised but rela-tively intact from the bru-tal, weeks-long debt de-bate. His approval rating

But now she’s going af-ter “Bachelorette” rejectson Twitter? She broughtthis one on herself.

Four days after so elo-quently tweeting “Omg!Ben f except my finalrose!!! Gotta book a flightto Sonoma !!!:):)”, the 32-year-old actress did, in-deed, show up in contest-ant Ben Flajnik’s home-town. "It seemed like afirst date, but he wasn'toverly affectionate to-

We can’t even handle

In 2007, Swarthmore nativeKuf Knotz toured the coun-try with the BurnDown All-Stars, playing packed ven-ues and converting thou-sands of fans along the way.It was all due to being fea-tured on the Fuse TV realityseries, “Bodog Music Battleof the Bands.”

But the bright lights ofHollywood didn’t do muchto cultivate the band. Infact, it broke them up.

“We were eight MCs andfive band members, so theirbig thing was, ‘You guys willnever make it, becauseyou’re too big of a band,’”explains Knotz. “Then they

started telling us certainmembers needed to go inorder to get a record deal. When we got back, we hada lot interest from labels, but it was the same thing:We’re too big.”

Apparently, the powersthat be never heard of theRoots.

These days, Knotz is pro-moting his first solo album,“BoomBox Logic,” in asmany local venues as he canfind, from coffee shops tooutdoor festivals. On Satur-day, he’s scheduled for dou-ble duty: By day he’s playingthe Jam at the Grove Festi-val in Ottsville Pa., and by

night he headlines an enor-mous bill of hip-hop acts atthe Fire.

He’s even made inroadsat WXPN — a station that’snot exactly a hip-hop desti-nation.

“I don’t intentionally tryto crossover, but I’m justopen. I listen to every-thing,” says Knotz. “When Iplay XPN events, a lot oftimes their core fan basewill approach me and saysomething like, ‘I’m not re-ally into that hip-hop, rapstuff, but I enjoy your mu-sic,’ so I guess there’s some-thing about it that’s easierfor them to swallow.”

Things you didn’tknow about Soave5Say what? Say Soave! Here’s the history behindthis Italian white wine, which is quickly making acomeback. Was it Romeo’s favorite?

America’s favoritewhite wine fromItaly in the ’70s and’80s, Soave decreased

in popularity in the ’90s aspinot grigio ascended. Thanks to the higher-quali-ty wines and targeted com-munication campaigns,

Soave is now regaining pop-ularity with America’s winedrinkers. Here, Soave wine-makers share what youneed to know.

In Italian, Soave means‘smooth’ or ‘appealing’The origin of the namecomes from the Suevians, apeople of German descentwho moved to Italy with Al-boin, the Longobard King,in the sixth century.

Soave’s lively aciditymakes it a perfect comple-ment for Japanese cuisine

Sushi, sashimi and tempuradishes have a complemen-tary delicacy and lightness. Also, Soave should bechilled — but not ice-cold.

Soave is for loversThe vineyards of Soave arescattered across thehillsides of the Veneto east

of Verona, the home ofRomeo and Juliet. Just 50miles from Soave is thatother romantic Italiancity, Venice.

The main varietal in Soave is Garganega Garganega is an indigenousgrape that found an idealhabitat in the volcanic soilof Soave. With a longviticultural history datingback to the Roman era, Gar-ganega is referred tofrequently in Italian litera-ture. Eons ago, the Soavearea was covered by a tropi-

cal sea as evidenced bysaline sediments in the soilthat are expressed in thewine.

The Soave Wine Road isan excellent way for trav-elers to experience Soave. Roughly 30 miles long andpassing through 13 winer-ies, this road showcaseshistoric landmarks and ar-chitectural attractions, museums, fine restaurantsand the landscapes of theVerona hills with theirabundant olive and cherrytrees. 3 2Young and the restless.

Vince Young has struggledpicking up the offense intraining camp, but coachAndy Reid confirmed yes-terday that he will get thesecond-team snaps in thesecond quarter.

While much has beenmade of Young’s off-the-field baggage and unusualthrowing motion, the 28-year-old has had successin this league — he’s 30-17 as a starter in the NFL(30-2 in college) and haswon 13 of his last 19 prostarts. Offensive coordina-tor Marty Mornhinwegused the words “bright”and “sharp” when dis-cussing the former Titan.Time to show it.

3In the line of fire.

Another unknown cominginto this “dream” season isthe offensive line, a unitthat struggled mightily attimes last season. Whilethe left side seems prettysecure with Jason Petersand Todd Herremans, keepan eye on the rest.

Jamaal Jackson (center)will see his first actionsince reinjuring himself inlast year’s opener. DannyWatkins (right guard) ismaking his NFL debutafter missing the firstweek of camp. And new-comer Ryan Harris will becounted on to protect Michael Vick’sblind side, with WinstonJustice still ailing. METRO

Eagles nab Pro Bowler SmithThe Eagles agreed to termson a one-year contract yes-terday with former Giantswide receiver Steve Smith. The deal is reportedlyworth $4 million, with $2million guaranteed.

“It seemed like a greatfit and that’s how it playedout,” Smith said.

Smith is coming off mi-crofracture surgery on hisknee and was limited tojust nine games last sea-son. The 26-year-old is stillrehabbing, but said he is“ahead of the curve.”

“If it were up to me, I’dwant to practice tomor-row,” Smith said. “I’m pret-

ty close. It could be Week 1... you never know.”

According to leaguesources, the Smith signinghas nothing to do with themysterious illness that iskeeping Jeremy Maclin offthe practice field. Theteam still expects himback for Week 1.

“We feel very goodabout our current group ofreceivers and Steve addsanother dimension to thatposition,” coach Andy Reidsaid. “He’s played very wellagainst us in the past fewyears and we’re happy tohave him on board.”

Bringingsexy

backSimon Kneen and Janie Bryant collaborated on the line,

which ranges from $40 for a scarf to $450 for men’s suiting.

What were some of your inspirations for the collection? Janie Bryant: I drew inspira-tion from my favorite MadMen pieces. I also have afew nostalgic pieces frommy mother that my grand-mother made in the ’60s. Afavorite is my mother’s en-gagement dress that is aroyal blue A-line party dresswith embroidered lavenderand navy roses. Why do you think there’s thisfascination with ’60s fashion? Simon Kneen: What’s not tolove about beautiful,dressed-up tailoring? It’sfascinating to see all thefaults of the characters, yetthey put on this facade ofchic polish and panache. Who do you think has the best

style on the show? SK: I love that Joan worksher incredible silhouette sofashionably. Fit is every-thing, and I always encour-age people to find the mostflattering fit to complementtheir assets. Joan’s a rolemodel for that! Did you guys have a whiskey orthree to get into the vibe?SK: Wouldn’t that have beenfun? It was actually over astrong cup of coffee at 6a.m. that Janie and I firstmet. We had such a genuineconnection and shared pas-sion for tailoring and whiteshirts — we could talk forhours about white shirts!

Facebook to be ‘destroyed’Nov. 5Hackivist groupAnonymous vows to “killFacebook” on Nov. 5, citingusers’ lack of choice in pri-vacy as its reason forattack.

Anonymous confirmedvia a tweet that while someof its members are organiz-ing the upcoming attackagainst Facebook, thehacker organization as awhole does not necessarilyagree with the attack.

The group of hackershas claimed participationin just about every recentnotable hacking attack ofthis year, and successfullybroke into 70 law enforce-ment websites and tookdown the Syrian Ministry

of Defense website thisweek alone.

This recent interest inFacebook, despite a slew ofprivacy concerns raisedagainst the social networksince its founding, may bea result of Anonymous’s re-

cent announcement that itplans to create its own so-cial network, called Anon-Plus. After the group’sGoogle+ account, called“Your Anon News,” wasbanned, it began fleshingout AnonPlus.com, “a newsocial network wherethere is no fear … ofcensorship.”
