I could have saved a life that day,

EHS TOOL BOX SERIES: Awareness is the key for better implementation of EHS. In this section from now onwards we will

bring some informations which will help you understand the EHS in a better way. First of this includes terms and definitions

commonly used during EHS. To make you understand further in a better way.

TERMS & DEFINITIONS ON EHS

SAFETY : The elimination of hazards or their control to levels of acceptable tolerance as determined by law, institutional regulations, ethics, personal requirements, scientific and technological capability, knowledge and popular practice is termed as 'Safety' or Freedom from unacceptable risk of harm.

SAFETY MANAGEMENT : Safety management is concerned with accomplishment of safety through proper planning, organizing, staffing, directing,

controlling and coordinating. ACCIDENT: An unintended occurrence arising out of and in the course of employment of a person resulting in injury. HAZARD : Danger or potential danger. (Potential condition ready to be converted into accident) ERGONOMICS: It deals with the physiological and anatomical aspects of man and his interaction with the environment in which he works. FATALITY: Death resulting from an accident. LOST TIME INJURY(Disabling injury): An injury causing disablement extending beyond the day of shift on which the accident occurred. MINOR INJURY(Non-disabling injury): An injury which requires medical treatment only without causing any disablement whether of temporary or

permanent nature. REPORTABLE DISABLING INJURY(REPORTABLE LOST TIME INJURY): An injury causing death or disablement of an injured person for more

than 48 hours. MAN-HOURS WORKED : It is the total number of employee hours worked by all employees (staff + worker) working in the industrial premises. It

includes managerial, supervisory, technical, clerical and other workers including contractors labour. MANDAY LOST: It is the total disability/ forced absence period in days of all the injured persons arising out of the reportable injury, serious injury and

minor injury. NEAR MISS CASES: These are incidents/ occurrences wherein a serious accident has not happened but could have happened i.e. normally missed. OCCUPATIONAL DISEASE: Disease caused by environmental factors to a person arising out of or in the course of employment. OCCUPATIONAL HAZARD: Hazards arising in course and out of employment. They include physical, chemical, bacterial, electrical, biological and

psychological hazard and also occupational disease and poisoning.

NOISE & VIBRATION : Maximum permissible exposure limit for employees to work in different sound level.
