For the proud Graduates- Diplomates (75), Baccalaureates (49), Post Basic Baccalaureates (28), Post Basic Diplomates (11), Fellows (2), Masters (28) and Doctorate (1) – it was a day to look back with gratitude and look forward with courage. The Chief Guest for the occasion was Ms. K. Sujatha Rao, IAS, Former Secretary, Health and Family Welfare, Government of India, whom the Director, Dr Suranjan Bhattacharji, introduced as an out- standing civil servant, with impeccable credentials, whose work in the health sector has promoted a vision of better health for all in India. In her inspiring address, Ms. K Sujatha Rao commended CMC for imparting ‘value based education’: knowledge and skills along with compassion and a sense of service. The health system in India required such dedicated individuals – she put the shortage of nurses at 5 lakhs, along with an equally important shortage of 10,000 faculty required to bridge the gap. The onus, she said, was on CMC, a ‘Centre of Excellence’, to increase the number of nurses being trained, to design appropriate faculty development courses, and to motivate nurses to stay and work in India. Ms. Rao congratulated the graduates on their achievements, and said they were blessed to

The Principal, Dr. George Mathew, distributed the certificates of merit, and Ms. Sujatha Rao presentedthe special awards. Ida Caroline N. was the Best Outgoing student in the Diploma course, Anjana Mary Jacob in theB.Sc. programme and Victor Immanuel A. in the Post Basic B.Sc. course. The Dr.M. Sulakshini Immanuel PhDAward was given to Dr. Vathsala Sadan and Dr. Leah Macaden. Mrs. Grace Divakar Pardhe, B.Sc. Batch of 1957, waspresented the Alumni Award 2010 for a lifetime of service to mission hospitals. Ms. Onyx Paul and Ms. Annie Emerentiaresponded on behalf of the undergraduates and postgraduates respectively.

The Baccalaureate Service was held on February 6, 2011 in the Hospital Chapel, and Mr. Durai Jasper, Public RelationsOfficer, was the speaker at this service.

The Fifth Dr. Benjamin M Pulimood Oration on Our Venomous and PoisonousEnvironment was held on February 5, 2011. Professor David Warrell, EmeritusProfessor, University of Oxford, a greatly admired and respected teacher, and apioneer of Tropical Medicine, delivered the Oration. He has over 360 publications tohis credit, and has been on the expert panel of WHO Guidelines for Rabies andSnake Bites, and the Oration strikingly brought out the passion of a person who hasspent a lifetime working on the latter. Dr. Kurien Thomas, Professor and Head ofMedicine, welcomed the gathering, while Dr. Ravi Korula, Associate Director, andDr. George Mathew, Principal, fondly remembered Dr. Benjamin M Pulimood.Professor Warrell also presented the Department of Medicine with a copy of therecently edited Oxford Textbook of Medicine 5th Edition, the series of which he hasbeen the Chief Editor for many years. The Oration was made all the more poignant,as it was in honour of an inspiring teacher and a compassionate physician, withlegendary clinical skills, who passed away on the same day.

Dr. Sukesh Chandran, Professor and Head, Department of Transfusion Medicine and Immunohaematology, has beennominated member of two Technical Committees of the National Accreditation Board for Laboratories (NABL), DST,New Delhi, for establishing specific criteria for Medical Laboratories for India and to write standards for EQAS(Proficiency testing).Dr. P.R.J.V.C. Boopalan, Assistant Professor, Orthopaedics Unit-III, and presently Trauma Fellow, Royal AdelaideHospital, Adelaide, received the Professor Derek Frewin AO Citation for Clinical Teaching in the School of Medicine,University of Adelaide for 2010.Dr. Hema Paul, HICC Officer, won the HISI Best Paper Award at the 11th National Conference of the HospitalInfection Society-India (HISICON 2011) held at New Delhi.Dr. Rohit Bhide, PG Registrar, Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, was awarded the Dr. P. HanumanthaRao Memorial Gold Medal for best PG paper at the 39th Annual National PMR Conference held at New Delhi.Dr. Surabhi Choudhary, Department of Child Health, was awarded the ST Achar Award for her paper at the 48thNational Conference of the Indian Academy of Pediatrics (PEDICON 2011) held at Jaipur.Dr. Rani Diana Sahni, Assistant Professor, Department of Microbiology, won the Dr. Ajita Mehta Award for the bestoral presentation at the 11th National Conference of the Hospital Infection Society of - India. Fire safety training was imparted to the staff of A Block onJanuary 31, 2011, by the Safety Cell headed by theAssociate Director, Dr. John C. Muthusami. The programmewas chaired by Mr. Josam Titus, Deputy GeneralSuperintendent, Mr. T.S. The Department of Pharmacy organized a Workshopon Pharmacy Management in MissionHospitals 11th February 2011 at the Grace KoshiHall, ASHA Building. Delegates from missionhospitals in Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Andhra Pradeshand Kerala attended the Workshop. The topicscovered included Management of Formulary,Choice of Brands and Price Issues, InventoryManagement, Dispensing Issues, StoresManagement and Legal Requirements. A special talk

on the Ecumenical Pharmaceutical Network (EPN) and its role in supporting Drugs Supply and Pharmacies in MissionHospitals was also given. It is envisaged that this Workshop would be useful to initiate networking of pharmaciesthroughout mission hospitals in order to share experiences and strengthen management systems.

The Department of Dietetics organized aWorkshop on Nutrition in Critical Carefor ICU nurses and doctors onFebruary 5, 2011. The Associate DirectorDr. John C.
