Academic members of TEU met across the university last week. We discussed the present state of bargaining, why the vice-chancellor does not seem to be listening to our fears and concerns, and what his proposals could mean for education at the university.

Members agreed we do not want to accept the employer’s offer, and are prepared to campaign to retain terms and conditions in our collective employment agreement that we know are important to doing our job well.

Summary of the employer’s offer:You will receive:

4% salary increase •Increase of annual leave to 5 weeks for those who have a •lesser entitlement

BUT you have to agree to removing the following from our collective agreement:

Research and study leave•Academic Grades Standards and Criteria – these are the •criteria for promotion, appointment, continuation and APR.Outside Activities – this condition enables academics to •spend up to 20% of their time working in their field of professional practiceDisciplinary guidelines•Eye tests•

Moving these terms and conditions from the academic collective agreement into policy means that these terms and conditions of employment can be changed by the employer without your agreement.

The ballot on industrial action will begin at a paid stopwork meeting on Friday 25 February from 11am to 12.30pm at the Recreation Centre City Campus of the UoA.

The action that you will be voting on will be limited to non-teaching activities at this stage.

This can be resolved easily, and we want it resolved quickly - we are not asking for anything new or

unreasonable.

“I’m turning down the money. I want the conditions,

because education is

more important.”
