The YMCAs and YMCA-YWCAs in Canada have been on a three-year journey to reposition our collective work to optimize the quality of life for all Canadians. This has included a rebranding process, a governance review, and an assessment of how we work together, balancing our local autonomy with the need for more transparent collaboration in serving more communities.

Canadians have told us that they see the YMCA as having an integral role in strengthening the foundations of community. Hence, our new tag line is “building healthy communities” and the theme for our 2011 annual report.

Community is a word that is omnipresent throughout our daily living. Community generally denotes groups of people who define themselves by common factors such as geography or interest. In central and northern Alberta, we have towns and cities of all sizes through which we govern ourselves; we have other communities such as the Aboriginal community and the Francophone community. Most of us are members of many communities.

We have an innate need to belong. Positive connections with others play a key role in our personal health. Conversely, the overall health of any community is contingent on the health of community members.

In 2011, we touched the lives of nearly 88,000 in the Capital Region and Grande Prairie. Our focus continued to be the spiritual, mental and physical growth and development all who came into our programs and services. As they realized more of their unique talents, they were more able to effectively participate and contribute to our respective communities. Their active engagement resulted in healthier communities.

Through our strategic priorities of health and prevention, healthy children and families and youth development, we strive to reach out and engage as many as people as possible. We are thankful to our 2,000 dynamic volunteer and staff team, our many donors, community partners and suppliers who helped to create positive growth and development experiences for so many families and children in the Capital Region and Grande Prairie.

In 2011, we continued the construction of the YMCA Welcome Village. After nearly a decade of work – and with the dynamic and financial support of the Government of Alberta, the City of Edmonton, Capital Region Housing Corporation and of our capital campaign donors – the vision will be realized when the Village opens in 2012. The notion of a village helps to reinforce positive connections leading to a healthier community.

As we celebrate our 104th year of service, we remain ever committed to enhancing the health of Albertans and helping to build healthier communities in northern Alberta.

Making a differenceIn 2011, our YMCA impacted 87,800 people in a variety of roles, programs and activities, an increase of 2,300 people from the previous year.

Andrew’s StoryBuilding healthy communities, one person at a time.

When Andrew (name changed for confidentiality) first came in for his intake interview with the YMCA Homeward Bound program, he was addicted to cocaine; he had minimal relationship with his family; he was depressed; and he was chronically homeless. After several months in the program, Andrew was able to see tremendous successes. His housing support worker gave referral information and advocated for support services; liaised with landlords; and provided coaching on how to deal with personal issues.

To Whom This May Concern.

My name is Andrew, and I am a 26 yr old Male with lots to lose now. When I started with the program through the YMCA, I had or at least felt anyways like I had nothing to lose. I was in a position where it felt like it would take a miracle to get out. After lots of determination and prayer, my miracle came to be from the hard-working staff at the YMCA. As I have been with the program, I have been able to acquire and maintain a fundamentally safe-living environment. I have been able to go back to school and do something with my life. I owe my sobriety mostly to the YMCA and to Jesus. I am at the point where I don’t count the days of my sobriety cause I am moving too fast forward to have time to look behind me. I have been supported by many people over the last year, and I am grateful for each and every one of them. Like anybody, I still have problems and that will always continue, but now I have a clean head to control and handle it differently in a more realistic, mature way. I am like I always say: “a work in progress.” I will be for a long time, but now I have what it takes to get where I deserve to be. I am willing and able to do the right things now, and I’m in no position to go back to where I was over a year ago. I am a hidden success story that is working now to prove it to himself.

Without this opportunity, I don’t know where I would be. I say this for sure though and that is I know for a fact it would be somewhere that I wouldn’t want to be.

Thank you so very much for your time.

Andrew

CoMMunitY pRogRAMsHousing ServicesFor over 100 years, the YMCA of Edmonton has provided 24/7 staffed transitional housing services to individuals and families in the Edmonton community. Today, the YMCA of Edmonton plays a dynamic and expanding role in our community’s fight to eliminate chronic homelessness and to ensure other vulnerable populations are housed in safe, secure and affordable environments.

We contribute through a variety of programs:• YMCADowntownHousingCentre–

the four-floor Housing facility is located at 10030 - 102 A Avenue.

• YMCAWelcomeVillageHousing Centre – opening in fall 2012.

• YMCAHomewardBoundProgramandInterim Housing – funded through Homeward Trust’s Housing First initiatives.

• TheHousingWorksPilotwithCapitalRegion Housing Corporation and Alberta Employment and Industry.

Our YMCA Downtown Housing has 24/7 staff who actively work with residents to support and stabilize them, identify individual or family needs and link residents to a wide range of appropriate resources including placement in permanent housing. This staffing structure greatly enhances our capacity to assist our residents in finding and maintaining permanent appropriate and affordable housing.

In 2011, YMCA Downtown Housing averaged 98 per cent occupancy; served 1,116 different women, men and children; provided Housing Support Services to 148 different individuals; and helped 28 different individuals, families and couples find permanent housing.

YMCA WElCoME VillAgEThe YMCA Welcome Village is part of the first phase of the Boyle Renaissance Project, a multi-phase, far-reaching community redevelopment situated in the area between 95 and 96 Streets and extending north from 103A Avenue to the LRT tracks. This made-in-community solution will provide 150 self-contained apartments for families, couples and individuals in the community, helping to address our city’s need for affordable, quality rental units.

Building a communityThis project is more than just building housing though. It’s about building a community – a healthy community. Staff will be on site 24/7 to ensure a secure and welcoming environment and will support tenants to set goals related to their quality of life and personal development.

The YMCA Welcome Village will feature a brand new community centre that will house the YMCA Welcome Village’s Child Care Centre, a YMCA Family Resource Centre, and the offices and multi-purpose programming and physical activity space for the Boyle Street

Community League. There will also be ample outdoor park space and a community garden space.

Construction updateIn co-operation with the City of Edmonton, Capital Region Housing, and the Boyle Street Community League, the YMCA of Edmonton and its partners are overseeing the first stage of the development.

As of December 2011, the West Building (community centre) has been hoarded in and roofing installation continues on all components of the building. The exterior wall framing is nearly complete and the installation of electrical and mechanical has progressed to the second floor of the structure.

On the East Building (housing), the sixth floor and the seventh floor’s maintenance penthouse and the roof slab have been poured. Exterior wall framing is continuing on the upper floors and some window installation has begun on the lower floors. Interior framing continues with mechanical and electrical rough-ins following the framing.

We are anticipating the opening of the community centre in August 2012 and the housing units in the fall.

hoMEWARd bound pRogRAMThe Homeward Bound program works with chronically homeless individuals, couples and families to find permanent housing and provide intensive support for at least one year to address barriers, establish relationships and improve skills to maintain their housing.

The program serves approximately 80 adults, couples or families each year.

David’s StoryBuilding healthy communities, one person at a time.

David first became involved with the YMCA in 2006 through the Housing program at the downtown facility. He was a single father of a four year-old son and going to school with the help of Alberta Works schooling funds.

After complaining to the management of his apartment complex about leaking windows, and excessive drug use and partying by neighbours, David and his son found themselves evicted.

David ended up speaking with the staff at the Downtown YMCA Housing, and he and his son were given a room on the fourth floor. David was referred to the Bill Rees

Family Ties program and soon changes for the better began taking place. They found a new home and David returned to school. He was also able to work part-time, something which had always been hard to do as his son was born with congenital health issues.

In 2010, they rejoined the Family Ties program. David has remarked that the relationship between their Family Support worker, himself and his son is so progressive that he doesn’t really know what he would have done without this support.

“I have been very empowered by the assistance and knowledge gained from utilizing these services and would refer any person if they are ready to take the steps to improve their lives.”

David and his son continue to access many of the services available through the YMCA, including the gym at the Don Wheaton Family YMCA, events in the community, and referrals.

Making a differenceWorking with our other six partners, development of the YMCA Welcome Village continued throughout 2011, with construction to be completed in 2012.

Making a differenceIn 2011, 1,116 individuals, couples and families were housed in the Downtown YMCA and received support services. Some moved to permanent housing in the community.

A WoRld of goodHealthy communities are made up of healthy individuals. Here at home, and around the world, the YMCA of Edmonton strives every day to make a real difference in all the communities we serve.

Strengthening our international partnership with YMCA Ukraine Over the course of the year, we continued our support of YMCAs in Ukraine to build healthy communities through values-based youth programs. In 21 cities across Ukraine, dedicated YMCA volunteers run programs focused on sports, camping, leadership, dance and theatre. Despite limited resources, these programs are addressing major social issues such as unemployment, drug and alcohol abuse, and HIV/AIDS awareness.

In 2011, finances from the YMCA of Edmonton supported youth programs and camps at the YMCA of Verkhovyna in western Ukraine, as well as staff and volunteer training costs through the YMCA Ukraine National Office in Kyiv.

In September, staff and volunteers from the YMCA of Edmonton hosted Luliia Pustovoit, a young volunteer leader from YMCA Ukraine. The following month, they met with Viktor Serbulov, the General Secretary of YMCA Ukraine, at the YMCA International Conference in San Francisco.

The Casa Canada ProjectConstruction continued throughout 2011 on a special YMCA facility in Ciudad Juarez, Mexico. Wracked by ongoing repercussions of the drug war between cartels and the Mexican government, this city on the Mexican-American border is one of the most violent places in the world. With financial support from the Canadian Prairie YMCAs, including the YMCA of Edmonton, the YMCA of Mexico is building a new Casa home, a refuge for youth who are repatriated back to Mexico after being caught attempting to enter the U.S.

In normal circumstances, repatriated youth are often abandoned by authorities in cities along the Mexican side of the border without any access to shelter, services or any means

to return home to their families. The Casa program, first introduced in 1990, provides safe homes with access to food, shelter, counselling and reunification services. Since its inception, the Casa program has helped over 50,000 young people.

This new model of the Casa home will be outfitted to not only assist repatriated youth but the community at large by helping youths and families at risk.

“During my stay here at the Casa YMCA, I have been trying to help Mari (YMCA staff in charge of the Casa) in whatever she needs... I know that my home is the Casa YMCA and even if Mari is not my family, she takes care of me and other guys that come in the same situation as me.” - Casa youth

Helping at-risk youth in Bogota40 years of internal armed conflicts in Colombia have created a situation in which approximately 60 per cent of the population (23 million people) are living well below the poverty line. In the last 15 years, more than one million children and their families have been displaced and are living in poverty in the cities. The violence in the country is not only from war itself, but also from the conditions that poverty creates – violence in the streets and abuse in the home.

For over 30 years, the ACJ-YMCA Bogota has directed many of its activities towards preventing home abandonment and all issues associated with this problem. Hogar Encuentro is one such program offered by the ACJ-YMCA of Bogota. It seeks to promote comprehensive development for boys, girls and youth who are at high risk of abandoning their home, dropping out of school, or getting involved in life threatening situations. This program is so successful that the YMCA of Edmonton has adopted the model to work with local youth at risk and their families. Our program is called Family Ties and operates from the Bill Rees YMCA.

Making a differenceEvery 30 cents donated to the YMCA of Edmonton Welcome Village Campaign will leverage an additional 70 cents from the Province of Alberta.

Youth pRogRAMsBy investing in the youth of today, we are building tomorrow’s healthier communities.

YMCA Youth Advisory CouncilThe YMCA of Edmonton’s Youth Advisory Council (YAC) advises the organization on a wide range of topics that require a youth perspective. Our Council is made up of youth from the four Health and Wellness centres and Bill Rees YMCA Community Programs. They are from different demographics, representing different communities and with different perspectives with the common goal of advocating a youth voice in the YMCA.

During 2011, the Youth Advisory Council learned about the YMCA of Edmonton and all its components – Health and Wellness, Child Care, Community Programs and Housing Services, International, and Philanthropy.

The YAC completed a needs assessment targeted at youth 12-18 to see how the YMCA is perceived by youth. Findings included a need for more youth programming; that fees are out of reach for youth; and that the majority of youth did not realize the scope of YMCA programming available for youth to access other that just fitness.

The Council consulted with IT and Communications regarding the YMCA’s presence on social media and how we can utilize social media more to attract the youth demographic. The YAC also consulted with YMCA of Quebec on how they can start up their own Youth Council and completed a Youth Advisory Council recruitment video aimed at attracting more youth to the Council.

The aims of the YAC are to connect youth programs across the city; advise the YMCA on the design of new youth programming; have youth involved in YMCA governance; and have a YMCA that is more youth-friendly.

hEAlth And WEllnEss CEntREsNo matter your age, chances are we have a program for you at the YMCA. The four YMCA Family Community Centres in Edmonton offer an ever-growing list of programs for adults, children and youth of all fitness levels. Whether it’s recreational sports, preschool activities, specialty aquatics, or any other of our many programs, the YMCA is the place to get fit, have fun and make new friends.

Edmontonians rise to the challengeGerry Haracsi, Juli Isaac and Sue Salsbury were typical Canadians – overweight or obese and unfit. That was, until they decided to do something about it. The three were selected to compete in the Edmonton Journal & YMCA Health Club Challenge.

Up for grabs was a year’s membership to the YMCA and a trip for two to Arizona, but most importantly, a chance to become fitter and healthier for life. For 12 weeks, from January to April, 2011, Edmonton Journal readers were able to follow the trio’s progress as they, with the help of their trainers, dietitian and massage therapist, literally worked their butts off.

And they weren’t alone. Over 600 people, young, old, whole families, registered for the home version of the challenge through the Edmonton Journal.

So, how did they do? Who won? You can read their stories here.

Making a differenceIn 2011, 2,600 children were cared for in our 35 licensed child care and out-of-school care centres in the Capital Region and in Grande Prairie.

Making a differenceIn 2011, 14,500 individuals enjoyed the same benefits as members as they accessed YMCA programs on an a la carte basis, such as learn to swim, recreation swims, pilates, yoga and martial arts.

Jim’s StoryBuilding healthy communities, one person at a time.

Jim recently started to bring his family to the YMCA on a financially-assisted membership. For two years, the family of five had walked past the Jamie Platz Family YMCA but were afraid to come in as they are low income and living on AISH.

When they finally did come in, they were overwhelmed by the friendliness of the staff who took them on a tour. The staff spoke with them about how they could help the family.

By the time he left, Jim felt respected and like he had found his home. After their opportunity fund appointment, the family was signed up. Mom and the youngest son use the pool regularly, and Jim along with 15 year-old Jimmy and 13 year-old Gabriel play floor hockey together.

Jim and the boys wanted to do something to give back to the YMCA. So they decided to purchase two new hockey nets and donate them to the YMCA.

As money is extremely tight, Jimmy and Gabe shovelled over 20 walks to raise the $180 to purchase the nets. Jim and the boys took the bus to Sport Chek and brought the nets home on the bus. After building them at home, they carried the nets to the YMCA to donate them.

“By taking part in YMCA membership, I have been able to teach my kids how to make the right decisions and give back by volunteering. I am grateful for the Y for giving me a chance to become a better dad and part of my community.”

gERAld’s stoRYBuilding healthy communities, one person at a time.

From one extreme to the otherFor a decade now, YMCA member Gerald Grant has been on a journey of self-transformation. He has overcome such daunting obstacles as obesity and cancer to become the healthier and happier person that he is today, and an inspiration to all.

In late 2001, Gerald was what you would describe as morbidly obese. Weighing 600 pounds, he required truck scales to be weighed properly. One

day, Gerald finally had enough, and made the conscious decision to change his life for the better.

Part of his fight was coming to terms with his obesity and taking responsibility for his current health. “You need to get to a point mentally where you accept who you are,” said Gerald. “You did this to yourself. We like to blame other things and not take the responsibility ourselves, but we put ourselves into these situations.”

Gerald began by controlling his diet, watching his calorie intake and eating healthier. Within four years, he lost over 300 pounds. He bought a stationary bike and started a cardio routine at home. Gerald remained determined, often waking up in the middle of the night half-asleep to peddle yet another half hour on his bike.

Gerald started going to the gym. It was an intimidating transition, but he set aside his fears to become a regular face at the Don Wheaton Family YMCA. He chose the Y partly because of its close proximity to work, but also because he appreciated its philanthropic spirit, recognizing that his membership helped to support programs and services that benefitted the community. The more Gerald went to the gym, the more interested he became in weight training. He started researching nutrition and supplement regimens, fitness programs and other health topics. It was at this point that disaster struck.

One morning, Gerald noticed a lump on his shoulder and later another. A check-up confirmed it: stage three lymphoma. He was immediately put on a round of chemotherapy, an ordeal he found both painful and exhausting. Despite something as terrifying as cancer, Gerald never lost faith in his progress and continued to go to the gym when he could.

“Whenever you’re in a position like that, you can take it multiple ways, he says. “;Cancer; can make you bitter and resentful. Or, you can look at it as an opportunity to do something positive.”

Cancer-free for three years now, Gerald’s focus is on becoming a motivational speaker and using his experiences to help others who were like him. “I want to focus on people who are in real need, who are in a bad situation.

Building Healthy Communities

About the YMCA in CanadaThe YMCA is a charity dedicated to building healthy communities. We are committed to nurturing the potential of children, youth and families, promoting healthy living and fostering social responsibility within the community. There are 44 YMCA Associations and eight YMCA-YWCA Associations across Canada. Together, we serve more than two million people, in 1,000 Canadian communities. Our focus on inclusiveness and accessibility means we serve people of all ages, backgrounds and abilities through all stages of life. Through the YMCA Strong Kids campaign, the YMCA is accessible to all.
