2011 VINTAGEDOURO REDS
Redondo Real Lavrador, Alentejano
2013Simple, light and fruity blend of local grapes
based on the widely planted castelão variety
which delivers nicely rounded red-berry fruit
and soft palate. 12.5%
ref JL-PW4351
£5.25 bottle £63 dozen
NEW Almeida Garrett Entre Serras,
Beira Interior 2012From the granitic slopes of the Serra da Estrela
mountain range in the heart of Portugal, this is a
fresh and youthful blend of local grape varieties,
trincadeira, tinta roriz and tinta barroca, with
black-fruit flavour and supple tannins. From the
Almeida Garrett family estate. 13%
ref JL-PW4691
£5.95 bottle £71 dozen
Old Vines in Young Hands Tinto 2013This sweetly perfumed red with a lovely silky
palate is one of a pair of new wines from old
mixed vineyards high in the Douro Valley where
a younger generation is making its mark at the
local co-operative. All Douro fruit (an obligation
for them, given their location and co-operative
status) but labelled ‘table wine’, as DO Douro
would make the wine more expensive. 13.5%
ref JL-PW4451
£5.95 bottle £71 dozen
Aliança Reserva, Bairrada 2011Modern-style Bairrada, where the local baga
grape is complemented by charm-infused tinta
roriz (Spain’s tempranillo), fragrant touriga
nacional and plump merlot, all rounded off by a
little oak maturation. 14% The £9 dozen saving
comes thanks to supplier support.

NEW Loios, Alentejano 2012A fruit-driven easy-drinking red from traditional
local grape varieties. It is named after the
Alentejo’s Loios monks, and has attractive red-
berry flavour, with a full, fruity palate. 14%
ref JL-PW4331
£6.95 bottle £83 dozen
Quinta da Lagoalva, Tejo 2012Satisfying and spicy oaked blend of two of
Portugal’s most important red grapes: castelão,
for roundness on the palate, and touriga
nacional for its fragrance and colour, from a
large estate north-east of Lisbon. 13%
ref JL-PW4311
£6.95 bottle £83 dozen
Blessed with plentiful sunshine, a long
coastline which brings cooling sea breezes,
and a treasure trove of old and indigenous
grape varieties, Portugal is a wine lover’s
paradise. The Douro leads, both in
confidence and class, and here we feature
the excellent 2011 harvest, which as well
as being a declared vintage port year has
also proved equally successful for fine red
wines. Portugal also boasts numerous less
familiar regions populated by myriad grape
varieties, all with individual flavour and
character, and there is great value to be
had throughout.
There is so much to discover and enjoy,
and our four mixed cases all have
savings (of up to £11.95) to encourage
you to do just that.

Anselmo Mendes Pardusco, Vinho
Verde 2012A new style of red vinho verde using the name
given to the first red wines exported from
the region to England in the 14th century.
Indigenous grapes were vinified as of old (short
maceration and fermentation of just one day on
the skins) to produce a wine light in colour and
low in extract. In body and weight, the closest
comparison we can think of is Beaujolais. 12.5%

Richard Mayson (right) and Rui Reguinga, makers of Duas Pedras.
NEW Duas Pedras, Alentejano 2012English wine writer Richard Mayson teamed up
with well-known winemaker Rui Reguinga to
realise his dream of making wine in Portugal,
his second home. In the hills of north-eastern
Alentejo, close to the Spanish border, they use
syrah and a dash of viognier with local touriga
nacional to make this spicy, velvety red. 14%
ref JL-PW4831
£9.50 bottle £114 dozen
NEW Rui Madeira Beyra Mencia,
Beira Interior 2012More often known as jaen in Portugal, the
mencia grape is undergoing something of a
revival in north-eastern Spain as well as here,
on the cooler mountain slopes of eastern
Portugal. Grown in granite and flint soils,
organically and without the use of oak, this
wine shows a real sense of place, as well as
appetising balance between fresh wild-berry
fruit and mineral tang. 13%
ref JL-PW4911
£9.95 bottle £119 dozen
NEW Quinta dos Roques, Dão 2011From the delightful Luis Lourenço and an IWC
(International Wine Challenge) gold-medal and
trophy winner, this wine is the essence of the
new Dão: fresh and sappy but whistle clean with
refined tannins. Typically of the region, a blend of
touriga nacional and jaen, with a little alfrocheiro
and tinta roriz. Now to 2018. 14%
ref JL-PW4671
£10.95 bottle £131 dozen
£5.50 DOURO REDS

verdelho from the producer of the popular
Espiga branco. 13%
ref JL-PW4921
£6.95 bottle £83 dozen
Quinta de Azevedo, Vinho Verde 2013Benchmark vinho verde – and one of the
first to move to a screwcap closure – this is a
delicately aromatic white with typical light spritz
on the palate. 11%
ref JL-PW4471
£7.25 bottle £87 dozen
Quinta das Maias, Dão 2013Produced using local grapes by Luis Lourenço
of the Quinta dos Roques, Quinta das Maias is a
separate family-owned property on the slopes
of the Serra de Estrela and farmed organically.
Shows real freshness and minerality. 12.5%
ref JL-PW4621
£8.50 bottle £102 dozen
Adega de Pegões Moscatel de SetúbalWe’ve been enjoying the Pegões co-op’s dry
whites for a few years now but the region
is perhaps best known for its sweet fortified
muscats. With complex rich, raisin and
marmalade flavour, this one is a snip at the price.
Bottled mature and ready to drink. 17.5%

£8.50 bottle £102 dozen
Morgado de Bucelas Arinto, Bucelas
2013Bucelas was the first wine offered to Society
members back in 1874. This modern expression
of the arinto grape is light and fresh, and its
relative neutrality makes it a great seafood wine
in particular. 13%
ref JL-PW4601

2011 DOURO REDS: A NOT-TO-BE-MISSED VINTAGEThe spectacular Douro Valley makes delicious red wines year on year, but great vintages
only come along every so often. 2011 was only the second universally declared port vintage
since 2003, and, just as it was a great year for fortified wines, so it was for Douro reds. Now
in bottle and released onto an eager market, the very finest wines will benefit from a little
more time. Some are available only in very limited quantities and our pick of these wines is
available online concurrently with this offer (visit thewinesociety.com/portugal).
Many others are just starting to hit their stride and we have made a selection of our
current favourites overleaf including a limited-edition mixed case. The result of a fine late
harvest, the wines show purity, density and freshness, with wonderful generosity of fruit
and the hallmark perfume that so typify this great region’s wines.
DOURO WINES AND FOODSmoked or spicy ingredients
were traditional food matches
for Portuguese reds because they
were a good foil for an often wild
and woolly element in the wines.
This is ancient history. Growers
in the Douro have pioneered a
new wave of supple, concentrated
reds that shine with simple ingredients – baked cod with tomatoes, lamb chops with
peppers or cauliflower cheese, Cheddar and Stilton for preference – this is port
country, after all.

NEW Quinta Nova 250th Anniversary
Douro 2011A distinctive bottle with which to celebrate the
2011 vintage in the Douro, the Quinta’s 250th,
and, last but not least, 140 years of The Society’s
close links with Portugal. This is Quinta Nova de
Nossa Senhora do Carmo’s unoaked red, but
nevertheless a structured wine, concentrated
but with mineral freshness. Decant to allow its
complex flavours to blossom. Now to 2017. 14%
ref JL-PW4871
£10.50 bottle £126 dozen
NEW Passadouro Tinto, Douro 2011 Jorge Serôdio Borges’ wine positively sang at
a tasting to launch the vintage earlier this year
(the Reserva is available online). Always refined,
the oak is a little less in evidence this year and
the wine all the more expressive and delightful
as a result. Now to 2020. 14.5%
ref JL-PW4731
£14.95 bottle £179 dozen
NEW Niepoort Vertente, Douro 2011 First produced in 2000, Vertente has a high
proportion of Niepoort estate grapes, part
from 20-year-old vines at the breathtaking
Quinta de Nápoles in the Tedo valley and the
balance from old vineyards in the Pinhão valley.
A typical hint of wildness here, with rich, spicy,
creamy, oaky palate that finishes smooth and
long. Now to 2021. 14%
ref JL-PW4781
£17 bottle £204 dozen
NEW Prats & Symington Post
Scriptum de Chryseia, Douro 2011The result of a successful partnership which
uses Bruno Prats’ (ex Château Cos d’Estournel)
Bordeaux experience to express the uniqueness
of grape varieties indigenous to the Douro
valley. The grapes come largely from the
Symington family’s Quinta de Roriz and Quinta
da Perdiz and the wine is aged in 400-litre
French oak barrels. Refined and fresh but with
plenty of muscle. Now to 2019. 14%
ref JL-PW4761
£18 bottle £216 dozen
NEW Quinta do Crasto Vinhas Velhas
Reserva, Douro 2011 One of the great wines of the Douro from one

silky texture that comes from the venerable old
vines here. Rich, muscular and concentrated but
delectably smooth. Now to 2024. 14.5%
ref JL-PW4821
£19 bottle £228 dozen
NEW Quinta Nova Reserva, Douro
2011An impressive wine, shipped in three-bottle
cases, from this up-and-coming estate owned
by the Amorim family since 2005. Unusually for
the region this is mostly tinta amarela, raised
in 300-litre oak barrels. Sweet and fleshy, this
shows the freshness typical of the grape. Now
to 2018. 14.5%
ref JL-PW4891
£23 bottle £276 dozen
NEW Lavradores de Feitoria Meruge,
Douro 2011As ever, a most distinctive red that is quite
different from the other wines in this offer.
A homage to Burgundy, its colour and silky
texture are reminiscent of ripe pinot noir and
it successfully delivers its aim for elegance over
power. Now to 2021. 14%

NEW Poeira, Douro 2011Owner winemaker Jorge Moreira invested in
