Welcome to Simpson College. We’re glad you’ve joined us to cheer on the Storm volleyball team at Cowles Fieldhouse.

This is an exciting time to be a part of the Simpson community. The campus landscape is changing, paving the way for the next chapter in the college’s storied history. The Blank Performing Arts Center renovation is complete, giving a shiny new home to the Simpson theater program and the nationally-

recognized Des Moines Metro Opera. On the North end of campus, construction is underway for the new 55,000 square foot and nearly $14 million Kent Campus Center, which is scheduled to be completed next fall. On the athletic front, the track and turf at Buxton Stadium was replaced in the summer, giving our student-athletes the benefi t of competing on two of the fi nest surfaces in the Midwest. Inside Cowles Fieldhouse, our competition gymnasium received a facelift with the addition of a panel of photos recognizing the teams which compete in the venue and celebrating some of the fi nest student-athletes to step foot on our campus. Those individuals truly represent the championship tradition we have developed here at Simpson.

While we seek to provide the best venues and facilities for our student-athletes, the Simpson Experience is about more than that. As a member of NCAA Division III and the Iowa Conference, we take great pride in developing student-athlete potential through a holistic educational approach that includes rigorous academics, competitive athletics and opportunity to pursue other interests and passions. Students are encouraged to take advantage of the many academic and professional resources available to them right here on campus, as well as utilize our proximity to Des Moines to pursue jobs and internships.

Thank you for joining us today. We hope you enjoy your piece of the Simpson Experience and visit us again soon. Go Storm!

Lana Smith took over Simpson’s volleyball program in 1999, leading the Storm to a record of 238-178 during her 11 seasons at the helm. Under Smith, the Storm have risen to

the top of the Iowa Conference and developed a reputation as one of the top teams in the region.

With Smith at the helm, Simpson has made a splash on the national scene, earning bids to the NCAA Championship in three of the last fi ve seasons. In that time, the Storm brought home Iowa Conference crowns in 2006 and 2009 and strung together fi ve consecutive 20-win seasons from 2005-09. Since 2006, Simpson is 29-11 against Iowa Conference competition, tied for the conference’s best record during that stretch.

She won her 200th match against Central College Nov. 7, 2008 in the semifi nals of the Iowa Conference Tournament. In 2006, Smith led the Storm to the program’s fi rst Iowa Conference Championship since 1994 and the team’s fi rst ever Iowa Conference Tournament title. In 2001, she earned Iowa Conference Coach of the Year honors as the Storm ended Central’s 56-match Iowa Conference winning streak. Smith served as an assistant at Simpson in 1998.

Prior to joining the Storm staff, Smith compiled a 243-89 record in nine years as head coach at Indianola (Iowa) High School, winning fi ve conference titles and making four state tournament appearances. Smith also founded the Power Force Volleyball club in 1990 and coached the program from 1990-1997.

Smith competed collegiately at the University of Iowa (1983-86) and remains among the top 15 in Hawkeye history in blocks (271), kills (918), and service aces (87). Smith served as team captain as a senior. In addition to her duties as head coach, Smith serves as assistant athletic director and Simpson’s senior women’s administrator. Lana and husband Paul, along with their two children, Jay and Kaylee, reside in Indianola, Iowa.

He has also coached the IPVA, Iowa Rockets and is the former director and coach at Sports University of USA Volleyball.

Mendoza’s high school experience includes stints with Dowling Catholic, Waukee and Indianola, where he worked primarily with the freshman and junior varsity teams. Collegiately, he spent time as an assistant at Grand View (2007-08) and Central (2006-07). He spent fi ve years as an NCAA Referee and started the Iowa Region High Performance program in 2001.

Lea HartiganAssistant Coach

Former all-conference performer at Wayne State College and Iowa High School player of the year, Lea Hartigan joins

the Simpson coaching staff for her fi rst season in 2011.

A three-year starter for NCAA Division II Wayne State in Wayne, Neb., Hartigan earned All-Northern Sun Conference honors as a junior and helped the Wildcats to the NCAA Tournament in each of her four seasons. As a senior, Hartigan and her teammates vaulted the program to a No. 1 national ranking. She was a two-year captain and took home academic all-conference honors following her junior and senior campaigns.

Hartigan came from Treynor High School, where she was stand-out, four-sport athlete. The Class 2A State Player of the Year as a senior, she led the Treynor volleyball team to four state tournaments and earned all-tournament honors twice. She also competed at the state track

Hartigan graduated from Wayne State with a bachelor’s degree in sport management, a minor in business administration and a coaching endorsement. After graduating from Wayne State, Hartigan served as the head coach for the Wayne Volleyball Club.

Playing at Simpson gives you access to some of the best athletic facilities in the Iowa Conference and the Midwest.

New in 2011, Simpson replaced the track and turf inside Bill Buxton Stadium to provide student-athletes the opportunity to compete on the nation’s fi nest playing surfaces. Installed on the fi eld was a FieldTurf Revolution playing surface, the fi rst of its kind to appear in the Midwest. Th e track is a full-pour, 10-millimeter track from Beynon, the same surface found at the University of Iowa.

Simpson’s main indoor facilities, the Carse Fitness Center and the Cowles Center, house a variety of diff erent amenities for training, strength and conditioning and recreation. Simpson’s indoor facilities include a 5,000 square-foot weight room, a competition fi eldhouse for basketball and volleyball, racquetball courts, a wrestling room, a 25-meter swimming pool, locker rooms and indoor batting cages.

Other outdoor venues include Dick and Nancy Buxton Memorial Tennis Courts, McBride Baseball Field and the Simpson Softball Complex. Simpson’s golf teams practice and compete at the Indianola Country Club.
